London's Basic Chanel conjures a liquid mist for the latest entry in our series. Chanel's work documenting the scene through Untitled 909 and her numerous other endeavors - including the Draaimolen podcast and a residency on Refuge Worldwide - will surely be known to many, yet discovering her distinct voice as a DJ and the warm personality behind it all was a revelation even still. Chanel distills her boundless passion for full-spectrum psychedelia into this enchanting mix, which paints verdant and hypnotic hues while maintaining an effortless sense of buoyancy throughout. "I was surrounded by all walks of life." Live from Dekmantel, the New York native talks about how the Bronx shaped her taste in music, her long-time love of radio and blowing up on the international DJ circuit. Gabrielle Kwarteng is a rising talent that you may have seen on stages at major festivals and clubs around the world. Her unique sound is dynamic and house-heavy, incorporating elements of acid, techno and everything in between. In this interview recorded live at Dekmantel, she discussed her upbringing in a Ghanaian household in the Bronx, and how that environment (and the neighborhood itself) moulded her taste in music. The community she grew up in was culturally diverse, filled with the sounds of reggaeton, bachata, merengue and freestyle from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and beyond. As both of her parents moved from West Africa, she was introduced to a diet of highlife music and jazz from a young age. Kwarteng's taste began to expand when she began exploring New York's record stores. Fast forward to university, and the aspiring DJ became deeply involved in her school radio station, which she describes as a turning point and a revelation. She speaks movingly about the abiding power that radio has had in her life—she continues to be involved with stations like Refuge Worldwide and The Lot, and soon NTS Radio, where she'll hold a residency beginning in 2025. She also talks about what it's like to be a female minority in the music industry, the experience of having her career take off at such rapid speed upon relocating to Europe and the importance of summoning optimism no matter the circumstances. Listen to the episode in full.

Stella Zekri (@stella-zekri-ouiddir) is based in Berlin but her sound defies the usual expectations of those who dance in the city best known for house and techno. Her sets instead are instead led by soul and emotion and reach far and wide into the worlds of hip hop, house, new beat, trance, jazz, disco and bring rich colours and exultant vibes to the scene. She often likes to play long sets and isn't afraid of twisting and turning through diverse tempos and rhythms along the way, which is something she also does at the Body Language events she founded with Camilla Rae and Caitlin Russell in 2021. They have brought something all new to the queer scene in Berlin, while her monthly Breakfast Show on Refuge Worldwide and her studio work with 80s zouk and boogie band Stella and the Longos are further creative outlets that make Stella a new school star. All of this is reflected in the sixty-minute selection Stella has put together for us this week: it's a celebration of her eclectic collection that is powered by outgoing pianos, emotive vocals and gleeful grooves. There are old school house jams and silky soul-laced depths, happy 90s tracks and plenty of sensuous voices that all prove Stella Zekri's ability to keep the good times flowing is second to none.
British-Nigerian-born, Berlin-based Richard Akingbehin (@richard-akingbehin) is behind many crucial projects in electronic music, and most of them revolve around his exploration of deep and dubby sounds. Not only is he a co-founder of the excellent Refuge Worldwide radio station, but he also runs the experimental label Kynant Record and has some key residencies when not headlining other cult clubs around the world. His label recently released the first new album from dub techno don Tikiman in almost 20 years and this summer the pair will be playing together again as part of a mini tour. Ahead of joining us at Dekmantel Selectors later this year, Richard recorded this week's mix for us in the Refuge Worldwide studio with the aim of showcasing what he is playing in the clubs at the moment. It takes in his signature blend of dub techno styles with music from the likes of Parallel 9, Tikiman, Dialog and Delano Smith. It's spacious and unhurried but slowly ramps up the pressure to get you on your toes and vibing to his ever-warm, supple and minimal rhythms.

Naomi is a Berlin-based DJ who has a perfectly calibrated passion for House music and an ability to create unpredictable atmospheres and energy in the club. Growing up and competing as a House dancer has helped shape and hone Naomi's appreciation for the smoothest of house grooves as a DJ. In the past 6 years, she's been making a name for herself by playing in the city's most renowned clubs like Tresor, Watergate, Golden Gate and Heideglühen and can be spotted regularly on HÖR, the notorious bathroom streaming service. Last year she kicked off a new residency at the not-for-profit radio station, Refuge Worldwide, where she holds down a monthly show specialising on all grooves and moods of house music. Changing tempos from soulful and deep house to driving and powerful is what she has become known for, and she continues to bring the love of Chicago and Detroit house music to the Berlin dancefloors. "I am currently gathering my music and energy for the upcoming summer gigs and have recorded it directly into a mix. Enjoy one hour of power and groove." Artist: @naominice
For the next ep of Spectral Voices I invited @ohm-599575574, a mainstay of the Icelandic techno scene with over 20 releases on labels such as Thule records, Rawax, Kontakt, Solid Groove, Taped Artifact, Ranges, Vade mecum, Vuo records and AE Recordings which he co-ran with Octal Industries and Thor from Thule Records. Now, Ohm runs his own imprint called 'Ohm Series', where he shines a light on a mixture of well-beloved veterans and some vibrant new names pushing techno's sonic boundaries. His integrity to the dub techno sound is the cornerstone of its operation. I play for most of the first hour, then Ohm's mix starts from 53mins. thanks to @refugeworldwide https://www.discogs.com/label/2338207-OHM-Series https://ohmseries.bandcamp.com/
