Welcome to Eurotales, where we offer a refreshing change from the same old stories about European football's top clubs. This week, we're heading to France to catch up with our friend, respected journalist Roy Calley, now based in the beautiful French Riviera. After years with the BBC, Roy was drawn to OGC Nice, where he's now a season ticket holder and deeply involved in the vibrant French football scene. OGC Nice is a club often affected by changes in the wind, and its landscape has shifted significantly since Franck Haise took over as manager last summer. Haise's appointment is a major coup for the club, owned by Manchester United's Jim Ratcliffe. As the former Lens manager, Haise masterminded the RC Lens fairy tale, using his shrewd management skills to help the team achieve more than expected. With Haise at the helm, OGC Nice is set to adopt a new philosophy, revamping tactics and team dynamics. The club's ability to adapt to high-profile player departures will test its resilience and ambition. As OGC Nice navigates this period of change, questions arise about its future direction, identity, and competitive edge in Ligue 1, especially with Monaco, Marseille, and Lille reemerging as strong contenders. Roy Calley's insight sheds light on this transformative time, combining local expertise with journalistic acumen. Lyon's Transfer Frenzy: Are They Building a Winning Team? With John Porter

Eurotales Football Podcast

Today, we talk to French Football Expert John Porter Editor of the renowned French Football publication The Crazy Dribbler about one of the most talked-about teams in Ligue 1, Lyon. After ending last season with a bang, many believed that they would be a top contender this season. The summer transfer window was chaotic with comings and goings more frequent than spring showers with John Textor at the wheel there is never a quiet moment (Everton beware). Cherki & Caqueret were pushed towards the door kicking and screaming while superstars like Zaha & Mikautadze were procured. Last Season's Performance But, as we all know, things don't always go as planned. Let's take a look at their last season's performance: From mid-December onwards, Lyon played 20 Ligue 1 games. They won an impressive 15 of them. They drew 1 and lost 4. It was a remarkable surge up the table, with an average of 1.9 goals per game. However, their start to the season was so rough that their run to the top wasted a lot of energy just to get out of relegation trouble. It wasn't until their 11th Ligue 1 match in mid-November that they registered their first league win. Fast forward to this season, and it seems like history is repeating itself. Slow Start This Season Lyon started slow, with a 3-0 defeat against Rennes in the opening match and a 2-0 loss against Monaco. Before the international break under severe pressure, Lyon reminded everyone of their potential in 11 minutes of chaos football losing 3-1 to Chelsea owned Strasbourg Lyon inspired by two unlikely heroes Gift Orban and Malick Fofana fought back to win 4-3 in a thrilling encounter. We John just how far can they go this season? Follow us on Twitter - @Eurotalespod Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Maisie Adam tells the shocking story of jealousy, deceit and a brutal attack on a Paris Saint-Germain player that turned team-mates into the bitterest enemies. Its a story that has gripped the French public since the arrest of PSG star Aminata Diallo in November 2021, suspected of ordering an attack on her team-mate and previously good friend, Kheira Hamraoui. The accusation was Diallo wanted Hamraoui's place in the PSG starting line-up and so instructed a group of masked men to intercept the two players on a car journey home together and then assault Hamraoui, targetting her legs. And this is exactly how events played out. Police investigations following the attack initially led them to Diallo's door although with too little evidence to charge her Diallo was released, presumed innocent. Instead the spotlight turned on the victim Hamraoui. Intimate details of her private life became public knowledge, including an affair with a married man who just happened to be a French football superstar. Diallo returned to play alongside Hamraoui back at PSG – and at this point life became hell for Hamraoui. Team-mates, opponents and even her own fans, acting in sympathy with Diallo, targeted her with vicious verbal abuse. It seemed everyone was against Hamraoui, including a controversial football agent, who would be accused of putting pressure on PSG to sell Hamraoui, and whose presence at training the player found intimidating. The PSG coach found himself caught up in the fall-out too, taking phone calls urging him to drop Hamraoui, and also receiving thinly-veiled threats if he didn't. He would end up in a fight to clear his name from terrible accusations. Then in September 2022, almost out of the blue, Daillo was re-arrested and this time the public prosecutor charged her. Statements from the men who carried out the attack identifying her as the mastermind along with months of secret phone surveillance convinced the police she was guilty. But is she? With the case still to come to trial this podcast presents the evidence and hears the opinions from those closest to the case, and those who think she's innocent, and those who think she's guilty. One question we've been asked a lot recently is whether or not we're planning to attend and cover any Olympic soccer matches this summer in Paris. We will be in Europe for EURO 2024 in Germany after all. Sadly though, we can't do it all. So, we figured we'd deliver the next best thing.  In today's episode we're bringing you a recent conversation with French Football Superfans Pascal, Joris, & Lennie - a father, son and daughter trio we met in Qatar during World Cup 2022. And if you're a fan who pays attention to all the micro-events happening around international soccer - for example, things like the World Cup draw - chances are you've seen at least one of them yourselves. That's because Joris (15) and Lennie (11), under the guidance of Pascal of course, have been footy travelers since at least the age of 2, and they have had some incredibly unique and high profile experiences you're going to love hearing about! They also share some local insights for the upcoming Olympics being hosted in Paris. Foot(y)notes: Watch Joris walk out on stage at the Qatar 2022 World Cup Draw with Didier Deschamps. Follow Pascal, Joris, Lennie, and their continual footy travel adventures on their Instagram account (@FootSouvenir). Here's more info on tickets to Olympic footy this summer in Paris. How to get New Caledonians talking to each other; the incompatibility of being gay and a football player in France, and the naval officer who turned his world travels into fiction. In the face of political deadlock over the status of the French overseas territory of New Caledonia, pro-independence and loyalist parties are struggling to even talk to one another. Caledonian journalist and writer Jenny Briffa has spent a good part of her life trying to get conversations going between the archipelago's different ethnic communities, and recently wrote a triptych of plays around the three independence referendums held in 2018, 2020 and 2021. She talks about the territory's colonial legacy, its shared cultures, and how she sees herself as a white Caledonian, born of French parents. (Listen @0')Football remains a very macho sport in France, and failure to fit the straight, virile mould can lead to harassment, insults or worse. Ouissem Belgacem quit his career as a rising football star aged 20 when he realised he could never be an openly gay player. He finally came out publicly in his book Adieu ma honte (Farewell to my shame) in 2021, which inspired a recently released documentary series. While he's no longer in the football world, he hopes to become a role model – something he never had – for today's players. He talks about needing to wear a 'heterosexual mask' as a player, and how little that has changed since he left the sport 15 years ago. (Listen @19'38'')Acclaimed writer Pierre Loti, who died on 10 June 1923, had a long career as a naval officer. He's in a long line of French public figures to have tried their hand at writing fiction, though with far less success.
