In this episode, we've got a legendary figure in the BJJ world, none other than 4th degree black belt Karel "The Silver Fox" Pravec! In addition to my home instructors, Karel "The Silver Fox" Pravec has been one of the most important figures in my personal development of my Jiu-Jitsu game. He's not just a coach; he's a mentor and friend who's helped guide me and a global tribe of others through the lockdowns with his wisdom and strategies that make up this amazing art. But that's not all. Karel played a pivotal role in getting this very podcast off the ground. He took a chance on an unknown host, agreeing to be my first guest in 2020 Karel's journey through martial arts is nothing short of awe-inspiring. In 1993 when BJJ finally made its way to the NJ/NY area, Karel Pravec embraced it with open arms. He became one of Renzo Gracie's first American students and dedicated his spare moments to mastering the gentle art. In 2006, after years of relentless practice, he proudly received his Black Belt from Renzo Gracie. In addition to his academies, Karel's expertise extends far beyond his own mats. He's become a sought-after instructor worldwide, constantly refining his skills and knowledge to benefit his students. He's shared his wisdom through his "Fluid BJJ" book and Digitsu video series, he has been featured on the Tristar Gym YouTube channel alongside the esteemed MMA coach, Firas Zahabi, and has several amazing offerings on BJJ Fanatics. Now, you might be wondering, how did Karel earn the nickname 'Silver Fox'? One of his training partners at the Renzo Gracie Academy couldn't help but notice Karel's remarkable ability to outfox him on the mat, despite being more athletic, bigger, and younger. With his distinguished gray hair and his cunning prowess, his partner began to affectionately call him the 'Silver Fox,' and the name simply stuck. In the episode we delve into leadership development in BJJ, explore Karel's upcoming JJ app, uncover the secrets of using the pool for BJJ training, and discover how to be the ultimate training partner. Originally from a small rural town in Georgia, Phaidra Knight, for nearly 18 years, traveled the globe as a professional rugby player, establishing herself as one of the premier players in the sport. In this episode, she shared the many unique experiences she had both on and off the field. And she explained how each athletic opportunity offered a new perspective and made her a better athlete. She also shared her passion for youth leadership and reminded us that even if we can impact one child out, that's one person who we have helped shape the trajectory of their life. Every single person deserves equality and the opportunity to feel limitless, especially children. Phaidra has made three appearances in the Rugby World Cup and was selected as the top player in the world for her position in 2002 and 2006. In 2010, she was named the US Rugby Player of the Decade. Also, in 2010, she became an avid CrossFit competitor and, in 2013, a member of the United States Developmental Bobsled Team. And in November 2017, she was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame. Phaidra is currently embarking on a new athletic endeavor, perhaps the most ambitious one in her life. She has set out to become a World Champion Mixed Martial Artist by the time she becomes a half centurion. She is also a keynote and motivational speaker, and TV/Media sports broadcaster. She serves on the USA Rugby Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees for the Women's Sports Foundation. With a passion for fashion and a powerful voice in equality for girls and women in sports, Phaidra will launch the PSK Collective an inclusive apparel line in the fall of 2020. What's more, Phaidra will be making her big-screen debut later this year in the movie “Bruised,” starring and directed by Halle Berry. And later this spring, the Global Sports Institute of Arizona State University will film a documentary featuring Phaidra's life journey. (7:56) Phaidra answers the question, “Do the reasons to get into sports differ for girls (intrinsic) and boys (extrinsic)?” (9:47) Her journey as a power athlete who got into basketball earned a Hall of Fame title in Rugby, and explored bobsledding. (28:19) Training never stops even during a pandemic: Phaidra continues her MMA training and chooses to focus on the things she can control; she points to the folks in the Olympics and how she feels for them, given that in one year some of them won't be competing and fulfilling their dreams. (29:47) Youth leadership and the mission and purpose of PeaK Unleashed. (31:06) Phaidra talks of the influence and push by her family: I know their drive is the reason why I am a Rugby Hall of Famer….I was pushed as a kid...and that's why I am who I am!!! (36:19) Learn how your cooperation can support Phaidra's non-profit, PeaK Unleashed; there are many creative ways to pitch in. Find out how. (45:28) I ask Phaidra: What's your take on the low standards we place on inner-city or small-town kids with few resources? BJJ head coach from Choketopus Gym Prague, Richard Andrs, interviews an active BJJ competitor Pierre Olivier. Pierre is a student of Firas Zahabi and trains at his Tristar Gym in Montreal. He also trains with legendary John Danaher in New York. In this interview, Richard and Pierre discus early days of No Gi at Tristar, structure of John Danaher's training, teaching group and private classes while still being an active competitor, injuries and how to prevent them. . . Aby trénoval s těmi nejlepšími, rozhodl se pravidelně jezdit cvičit do Renzo Gracie Academy v New Yorku, kde pod vedením Johna Danahera trénuje s naprostou světovou špičkou. V Choketopus Gymu nám Pierre připravil skvělý seminář na téma „rolling back attacks“. Protože mě více zajímal jeho způsob trénování, rozhodl jsem se s ním udělat delší rozhovor. V podcastu si můžete poslechnout něco o historii No-Gi Grapplingu v Tristar Gymu, trénování v Gi vs No-Gi, o tréninku s Johnem Danaherem, učení ostatních, něco málo ohledně zranění a jak to všechno ve zdraví odtrénovat. Celý rozhovor je v anglickém jazyce. . . Více informací o mně najdete na webu https://richardandrs.com. Můžete také sledovat můj YouTube kanál s názvem Raw Jiu Jitsu www.youtube.com/c/RawJiuJitsu, kde publikuji každý týden jedno instruktážní BJJ video přímo z výuky v našem gymu. Listening to American Olympic judo silver medalist and BJJ black belt Travis Stevens will make you want to get up at 5 a.m. and train five times a day. He talks to us about goal-setting, work ethic, and determination -- and recounts matches that are years in the past with an emotional resonance that suggests they happened yesterday. Listeners submitted dozens of questions for Travis, and he answered them all in the way you’d expect him to -- directly, thoughtfully, thoroughly. We go over his thoughts on how you should approach learning and practicing takedowns; what it takes to keep up his famous training volume, and his approach to avoiding injuries while clocking so many hours on the mat; what he really thinks about self defense; advice for judo teachers with jiujitsu students; and how the training at the Renzo Gracie Academy in New York compares to international judo training. Be sure to stay tuned for the brutal story of his 2012 Olympic semifinal, where the judges went against him in a controversial decision against Germany’s Ole Bischof.
