The 1961 Ashes had it all, especially at Old Trafford. The ground where Jim Laker ran amok the previous time the Australians visited would be the scene of a staggering come-from-behind triumph under the bold leadership of Richie Benaud, spinning to win from out of the rough. Adam has Steve Cannane with him to interview Harry Ricketts, the co-author of a terrific new book focused on a match that helped earn the Australian captain the reputation as the best leader in the game. But it's a portrait just as much about the England skipper, Peter May, and how a champion player would become a symptom of an antiquated class system by the end of his time in charge. A book that's going to win a stack of awards, it's out this week. Enjoy! The 1960/61 West Indies tour of Australia was one of the greatest test series ever played. On the eve of the first Test in Brisbane, Don Bradman, the chairman of the Australian board but really everything cricket in Australia, asked Richie Benaud, the home skipper, if he could have a few words with his side. Benaud was not one to disagree with a presence as sharp and ubiquitous as “Braddles”, and stood back to watch. Bradman said that he saw the series against Worrell's men as an opportunity for the home side – and cricket generally – to distance itself from some of the stodgy stuff played in previous series. He hoped Benaud and his men, with the coming young stroke-maker, Norm O'Neill in their midst, would lead the way. This is the story of the first ever tied test in the history of the game, at the Gabba, 1960.Donate to The Luke Alfred Show on Patreon.Get full written episodes of the show a day early on Substack.Check out The Luke Alfred Show on YouTube and Facebook.

Tune in to see if you can pronounce Afrikaan's names better than Riders Lounge Podcast and King of the Whip host, Steve Sommerfeld. To be honest, I was tongue-tied. Trying to get a name like Dirco van der Westerhuizen out in one go was impossible. I was struggling hard with the South African names and Jacques decided to help out with the pronounciation! If you have ever listened to the 12th Man series which is an absolute piss-take of the Australian Channel 9 commentary team across Cricket mainly and other sports, the long running gag was trying to say Pakistani, New Zealander names for example. And I had the same feeling like I was Bill Lawry trying to talk to Tony Greig with the doyen of cricket commenatry, Richie Benaud blasting me. Anyway, after all of that, I caught up with one of South Africa's FMX young guns, Jacques Human to see how he felt bringing new tricks to Montecasino in Johannesburg and if the wind was going to be a factor in throwing down for King of the Whip.

Maybe getting ahead of ourselves is too much, but how about Hawkish on our prospects. Time to Restump Podcast review the hard-fought win over the Hawks.Hawthorn is a pretty decent 13th placed team! They brought their best and ran us to the wire but 3rd quarters are our specialty, we stuck the fork in the hawk and it was done. Did we overuse the handball? We only had 88 more than Hawthorn so…. yeah just a bit! But everyone got amongst the disposals as we ended up with a record equalling 13 players on 20 or more possessions. But make no mistake we won the game largely because we somehow managed to consistently generate scores from minimal forward 50 entries. We set our season record of scoring 53% of the time, meaning we went at a rate of hitting the scoreboard every 1.9 forward entries. Not bad considering our season average 43%.Andy Brownlowshaw was at his Brayshaw best but he probably got trumped for best on ground honours by secret celebratory handshake mate, Caleb Serong. Caleb's hands are so quick they're blurry. He'd be one hell of a pickpocket if this footy thing ever goes wrong.Sonny Walters went up another level, back to his brilliant best. He's turned in a Richie Benaud on Saturday, 2 goals from 22 possessions. A match high 11 score involvements tells you how team oriented the great man is.And down back Brennan Cox was controlled the defence marking everything. He could have plucked a low flying seagull out of the air had he tried! And whatever Coxy didn't mark, Hayden Young did, as the pair took 20% of the teams grabs on the day. Young's signature was a handy one the other week. The negative to come out of the game was obviously Blake Acres' hamstring. We got a glimpse of how much this caper means to these guys as Blake was left distraught on the side-lines. The bye has come at the right time for him.So, we put the plucky Hawks to bed and we enter the bye in ripping shape both on the ladder and, bigger picture wise, in terms of healthy personnel. We dissect Fyfe's return, his forward craft and look at how his reintegration into the midfield went. Bloody decent performance in isolation at least! We secured a non-binding agreement from Ryan “Clamp” Crowley to come on the pod and it was the persuasion of everyone who helped us get him. So, thanks to all. He is in Europe so he can't do the bye pod but he will come on when he returns. Jojo, believe it or not, decided to extend his holiday so we're still recording across oceans but he assures me this will be the last one. Inflation? Water off a duck's back to him!You would think the West Coast Eagles would be able to stay out of the headlines during a bye, but no, Tricky Trevor Nisbett has presented us with a podcast closing Neighbourhood Watch. So, while we're off looking to secure a bye round podcast guest, feel free to give this hour of purple poxless monkey business a whirl.

Guest: Michael Atherton Jon talks to Michael Atherton, a man who has held two of the great offices of the game, that of England men's captain and cricket correspondent of the Times, a unique double, and one that he rounds off as one of Sky's commentators. Plenty of former players jump across into media, but it's hard to think of any since perhaps Richie Benaud that have embraced their second life in the way that Mike has. If he mentions his playing days its with a kind of wry smile, and perhaps that has something to do with the age in which he played? In this episode, Mike talks candidly to Jon about life on both sides of the boundary rope. The Nightwatchman Podcast Written and hosted by Jon Hotten Produced and edited by James Wallace

Its not easy being proclaimed as the next Don Bradman, Ian Craig was hailed as such when he became Australia's youngest baggy green cap, aged 17, he was then made its youngest ever Captain aged 22 in 1957, illness would lead to an equally early retirement. =He may not have been Bradman mk2 but he did have a big influence on Australia's 1957-58 team and on the Man of the Series, future captain Richie Benaud.
Richie Benaud had established himself in the Australian team without making match winning contributions, his series winning bowling performances against India hinted at greater things to come.

To most English cricket-lovers Scotland is an exotic foreign country, but it has a rich, independent cricket history, as Peter Oborne and Richard Heller discover from an expert guide in their latest cricket-themed podcast. Fraser Simm is an author, historian, analyst and collector who has been chairman of the Cricket Society of Scotland for over 25 years. Fraser speaks of his first introduction to cricket – from Richie Benaud's Australians visiting Edinburgh at the end of their long 1961 Ashes-retaining tour. They became lifelong heroes to him for playing on through constant drizzle which (said Benaud) turned his normal legbreaks into off-cutters (he still took seven wickets with them, and scored over 70). Fraser picks out some eminent names in the Scottish team including Ronnie Chisholm, Jimmy Allan, Rudy Webster, later a sports psychologist and ambassador, and a young future England captain, Mike Denness. He also recalls Bradman's last two playing matches in the British Isles, in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, where he scored a century, after which King George VI invited him and both teams to Balmoral. A surviving member of the Scottish team later told Fraser that Balmoral was very untidy, that Keith Miller was seen walking with his arm around Princess Margaret and that there was a phoney press row about Bradman with his hands in his pockets talking to the King. Fraser says that the King gave permission for this but cannot answer whether Bradman gave the King permission to put his hands in his pockets. All of these scenes were mysteriously omitted from The Crown. Fraser delves into the early history of Scottish cricket. He cites the earliest known recorded match near Alloa in 1783, but also mentions evidence that cricket was played by Scots at home and as emigrants to Georgia fifty years earlier. He traces the influence of the English soldiers in the Hanoverian army in Scotland after the suppression of the 45, and that of English workers in Scotland's textile, paper and iron works during the Industrial Revolution. Cricket became popular all over Scotland in the nineteenth century, and had a major stimulus in 1849 when many of England's best players in the All-England XI came to play 22 of Scotland: they won easily although Scotland's Charles Lawrence took all ten English wickets in an innings. Fraser sets out his interesting afterlife: he became a major cricket “missionary” to Australia and managed the first Australian tour of England, by Aborigines, in 1866. As in Italy many famous Scottish football clubs began life as cricket clubs, but cricket in Scotland was held back by lack of a central organization. Although Scotland received many visiting teams from England, including several led by W G Grace, and provided a vital two-year apprenticeship to Wilfred Rhodes, English cricket gave little support to its development. Although largely denied first-class or professional cricket opportunities in their own country, many important Scottish personalities played cricket enthusiastically and in some cases with real ability. Fraser sets out the astonishing multi-sporting achievements of Scotland's cricket champion, Leslie Balfour-Melville (a cousin of Robert Louis Stevenson). J M Barrie loved cricket and formed his own literary team to play it. It included Conan Doyle, who once had to leave the field on discovering his flannels were ablaze after the ball ignited a box of matches in his pocket. Hesketh Pritchard, educated at Fettes, refused a cap for Scotland in order to play for his house at school. Later as a literary explorer his search for the giant sloth inspired Conan Doyle to write The Lost World. And more...

#TheHowieGames | Michael Holding was a mainstay of one of the most feared, loved and dominant teams world cricket has ever seen, the mighty West Indians of the 1970s and 80s. This episode meanders through Michael's early years growing up in Jamaica, reaching a point where Mikey was the most graceful, beautiful, captivating quick-man the game had seen. Michael also talks extensively about his fearless approach to cricket broadcasting, where he learnt the ropes with the likes of Richie Benaud and Ian Chappell. But above all that, it's the last part of the podcast that will stay with me. Michael's words and thoughts on the scourge that is racism, left me questioning a lot of things about the world in which we live, and frankly, how I, as a white male, view it. Since I spoke to Michael his explanations and hopes have been a topic around the dinner table with my wife and kids and I really hope it becomes a talking point with your family. ❤️ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The late Richie Benaud, who was considered the doyen of cricket commentary, once called cricket the most controversial game of all. Over the years, cricket has been involved in a lot of controversies like gambling, match-fixing, spot-fixing, sledging, disrespect towards umpires, dalliances of a non-platonic nature, verbal tirades and even the odd physical skirmish. Ball-tampering can also be added to this list but for some reason over the years it failed to be considered a serious offence. There have been a lot of players caught red-handed, tampering with the ball over the years but for some reason the offence does not seem to warrant the seriousness that it deserves. Here is a list of players caught tampering with the ball over the years. Listen on...

Now, I have gone into every Big Interview knowing that football was going to be the main topic of conversation. But there have been times when I've spoken to a guest who talked just as passionately about cricket - so much so, that we have dedicated a special clip show to the sport. We begin with perhaps the most talented cricketer to have featured among our guests: Mr Phillip Neville. Phil was facing fast balls and yorkers, delivered by some recognised international players, when he was just eight years old. He lived to tell the tale on The Big Interview. A young Matt Le Tissier was also considered to be a skilled wicketkeeper and a prodigious batsman. He might have made it in the sport had he not happened to be a pretty capable footballer too. Phil also describes the mental toughness he saw in the Australian cricketers he played with and explains how that helped him in his football career, while Chris Sutton argues that batsman is the most psychologically demanding role in all sport. And we give the last word to Gary Neville as he pays tribute to the late, great cricket commentator Richie Benaud. Enjoy! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
