Episode 240 of the Sports Media Podcast with Richard Deitsch features two guests. First up is a conversation with Boston Globe sports media writer Chad Finn and Deitsch on the first week of NFL broadcasting. In this podcast, we offer our thoughts on Joe Buck and Troy Aikman's ESPN regular-season debut; Kevin Burkhardt and Greg Olsen's first game as Fox's top NFL team; Ian Eagle and Charles Davis; Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth, Greg Gumbel and Adam Archuleta and what we anticipate from Amazon's first game. We also discuss Amazon viewership potential. That conversation is followed by Alex Flanagan, who is the senior vice president, partner, and agent for The Familie Sports Marketing and Talent Agency. Flanagan discusses her fascinating transition from working as a broadcaster for NBC, the NFL Network and ESPN to becoming a talent agent; how and why the transition happened; how she ended up joining The Familie agency; what her current job is; the challenge of building a talent base; representing Kimberley A. Martin, Britt Ghiroli and Sloane Martin among other clients; her personal experience with agents; what she hopes to do heading forward and more.  You can subscribe to this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, and more. Kathleen opens the show drinking a Black Cherry White Claw and providing listeners with an update on the success of her March Madness bracket in the Madigan Family pool. UPDATE ON KATHLEEN’S QUEEN’S COURT: In an update on her Queens, Kathleen tells the Termites that Dolly Parton has her own ice cream flavor called Strawberry Pretzel Pie, which will be available from Jeni’s Ice Cream. Tanya Tucker has released a duet of “You Ain’t Woman Enough” on Loretta Lynn’s 2021 release of “Still Woman Enough,” and Kathleen wishes Queen Chaka a very happy belated birthday which was March 23rd. “BAD GOOD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Hidden Valley Ranch Garlic Parmesan Cheese Dip with a Ritz cracker, which she loves, as she does her next snack: Cheez-It Loaded White Cheddar Popcorn. Then in the spirit of March Madness, as she has watched (and bet on) every game, Kathleen picks up the new Wendy’s Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit as Charles Barkley and Greg Gumbel mention on CBS broadcasts that it is the official breakfast of the tournament. Kathleen had such strong feelings regarding the sandwich that she posted a separate commentary video on YouTube. CHINA + NEPAL AGREE TO HEIGHT OF EVEREST: As a follow up to Episode 33’s Everest story, Kathleen reads an article announcing that after years of dispute, China and Nepal have agreed that Everest’s official height is 29,032 feet. NEW MH370 DETAILS CLAIM A COVER-UP: As her Termites know, Kathleen has a long-going commitment to finding out what happened to the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 as detailed in her bit “Malaysian Flt 370.” When the plane crossed over into Vietnamese airspace, the co-pilot didn’t engage their air traffic control and an assumption lingers that all tracking devices had been disabled so that it could vanish. Kathleen is thrilled to read the news that Florence de Changy is a Far-Eastern correspondent who covered the case in detail, is releasing a new book alluding to a cover-up by the authorities. PRINCE HARRY’S NEW JOBS: Kathleen follows up on her Episode 31 update on the ongoings of Harry & Meghan in their new life in the US. Kathleen has never been a fan of the British Royal Family and is amused at the drama surrounding the couple’s departure from royal life. She reads the latest press advising that Harry has joined Silicon Valley startup BetterUp as their chief impact officer (which Kathleen calls a made-up title,) and he has also joined Aspen Institute’s new Commission on Information Disorder (which Kathleen feels as though he is COMPLETELY unqualified to formally manage.)THE QUEEN OF SOUL: Kathleen LOVES soul music, and she’s a massive fan of Aretha Franklin’s recordings. She’s read 3 biographies discussing Aretha’s life, and after watching Nat Geo’s “Genius: Aretha” series Kathleen has headed to Muscle Shoals, AL to play golf and tour FAME Recording Studios and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. She intends to enjoy some sunshine, a few beers, and gather as much information as she can about some of her favorite iconic singers immersing themselves in the Muscle Shoals Sound. POOP IN A BOX: Kathleen tells listeners about another Theranos-like startup company that has been charged in a $60M fraud scheme. Jessica Richman, who founded uBiome was indicted on multiple federal conspiracy charges last week. uBiome’s direct-to-consumer service called “Gut Explorer” required customers to submit fecal samples to be analyzed in a lab to detect diseases such as colon cancer. As the daughter of a lawyer, Kathleen laughs out loud at ANY thoughts of requesting that she “mail her shit in a box.”USVI BOAT MURDER: Kathleen reviews an investigation in the US Virgin Islands involving the disappearance of British woman Sarm Heslop from her American boyfriend's boat. Heslop vanished without a trace on March 7 after she and Ryan Bane had drinks in Frank's Bay, St. John. Bane told investigators they had returned to his catamaran that night and he awoke in the early hours to find his girlfriend gone. Being an avid fan of the ID Channel, Kathleen goes into her own thoughts on what happened that night ☺VAN GOUGH PAINTING EMERGES FROM HIDING: Kathleen can’t believe an article that she shares announcing that the Vincent Van Gogh painting “A Street Scene In Montmartre,” which has been owned by a French family since it was created in 1887, has been released for auction. SAN DIEGO MYSTERY BOOMS: Kathleen discusses the “skyquakes” that have been heard in the San Diego area over the past few months. The sound lights up social media and resembles the explosion of a heavy piece of artillery that can be accounted for by none of the known laws of nature. Many locals mistake the noise for an earthquake, but the US Geological Survey said seismic-activity sensors recorded nothing. Kathleen asks Termites based in that area to share their thoughts on what they feel is causing the noise. TOXIC POSITIVITY: Kathleen is amused by but also has a lack of trust in people who are always hyper-positive. She’s THRILLED to read an article from a leading psychologist taking the opinion that while over-indulgent positivity it is well-intentioned, toxic positivity suppresses emotions which can then lead to stronger negative emotions such as anxiety and depression. The doc defines Toxic positivity as the belief that no matter how dire or difficult a situation is, people should maintain a positive mindset which makes Kathleen’s head explode as she pours another beer and calls her sister to catch up on family gossip. LONG-LOST 1634 SETTLEMENT FOUND: Kathleen is excited to share with Termites that St. Mary’s City has been discovered in Maryland after 90 years of research. The colony was settled in 1634 by Catholics fleeing England after being. Accused of starting the Great London Fire of 1666. Kathleen applauds the endeavors of the archaeologists, and she’s amused at how jealous her mom and Jeff Foxworthy will be to hear that ancient arrowheads were found (as both are adamant arrowhead collectors.) WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen recommends watching the new HBO documentary “Tina” about Tina Turner, and also “Genius: Aretha” which is a Discovery Channel original available on DiscoveryGO and Hulu.

On today’s podcast I want to shed a little light on the way Superbowls have been covered by the broadcast teams in the booth with a little opinion sprinkled in for good measure. Wow, there have been some great talents in the broadcast booth over the years. You’ll be surprised who the play-by-play teams have been and who some of the best are, in my opinion. Names like Curt Gowdy, Pat Summerall, Merlin Olsen, Dick Enberg, John Madden, Greg Gumbel, Joe Buck, Troy Aikman… and others. Amazing. It’s all about chemistry and communication. Can’t wait to see what we’re going to get this Sunday. Oh, and I’ll have my picks for the game. Maybe it’s the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes, or it could be Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Or should I say the Tamp Bay Brady’s? You want to know who I think is going to win? Listen up. Let’s get ready for Sunday together! Valentine's Day is just around the corner and the means your personal grooming better be where it needs to you. Kathleen opens the show with a freshly poured spicy bloody Mary, mixed with Sausage Tree Irish vodka in her favorite Imo’s Pizza pint glass. DOLLY PARTON QUOTE: Kathleen reads a Dolly Parton quote involving men’s intentions and her own female intuition. “BAD GOOD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food, Kathleen describes to listeners the taste of Hershey’s Kisses new limited edition Sugar Cookie candy, which she samples for the first time while recording the Pubcast and immediately realizes that the candy doesn’t pair well with a bloody Mary. Kathleen recovers and tells listeners that the newly released Gingerbread Oreo cookies will get anyone in the holiday spirit even during a pandemic, and if those don’t make you break out your reindeer bells she recommends Cheetos White Cheddar Snowflakes (which actually pair well with everything that Kathleen drinks ☺)KATHLEEN’S QUEENS GET BUSY: Kathleen follows up on her story from EP 17 regarding Cher traveling to Pakistan over Thanksgiving to meet an elephant named Kaavan. Cher has been lobbying to relocate the pachyderm from its most recent home at the Islamabad Zoo to a sanctuary in Cambodia, and she flew to meet and serenade Kaavan before his departure for his new home. Stevie Nicks announced this week that she has sold a majority of her publishing catalog to publisher Primary Wave for a reported $100 million. Kathleen goes off on Stevie for selling her precious hits that Kathleen loves so dearly, and is upset to advise listeners that along with the catalog purchase, Primary Wave also has access to Nicks’s name and likeness, and has established a partnership with the singer to allow her to sign new songwriters in a joint venture. Kathleen finishes her rant telling listeners that she’s considering starting a Go-Fund-Me for Stevie to prevent further insane decisions in the future on behalf of her most devoted fans. HOLIDAY CHRISMAS MOVIE TIME: Kathleen has become somewhat addicted to the cheesy nature of Hallmark Christmas movies, disclosing to listeners that she watches at least one movie every night during the holiday season. She has branched out from the original Hallmark Channel to also watch holiday movies on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel, Lifetime, and Netflix. Kathleen has created her “Good” and “Bad” list of common themes in the majority of these movie plots, DEATH OF A SLIM JIM: In keeping with her gas station food palette, Kathleen tells listeners that she LOVES Slim Jim jerky snacks, and is extremely sad to hear that the inventor of the Slim Jim recently passed away from complications of COVID-19. Alonzo “Lon” T. Adams II died at the age of 95 in North Carolina, and spent the better part of his 25+ year career at GoodMark Foods perfecting the current recipe for the classic Slim Jim. ANIMALS MOST LIKELY TO KILL YOU BY STATE: Kathleen continues with the new segment of the Pubcast: Animals Most Likely to Kill You (By State), as reported by the Center for Disease Control. If you live in Arkansas or Idaho and die by animal encounter, you’ve most likely run into a bear. FEMALE FANS AND THE NFL: Kathleen is alarmed when she reads to listeners the recent comments from NBC NFL sportscaster Cris Collinsworth regarding women’s knowledge of football. While broadcasting a recent Pittsburgh Steelers game, Collinsworth stated that he was “blown away” by the questions from female fans of the team, which came across as extremely sexist when he insinuated that female fans don’t have a lot of general knowledge about how football is played. Kathleen tells listeners that the irony of those comments is that Collinsworth has worked with veteran sideline reporter Michele Tafoya for years now, and he has also worked on segments involving female NFL coaches. Kathleen boasts that her favorite sportscasters include Greg Gumbel, Bob Ley, and Mike Tirico, and that she and her mom beat her dad every week in the family NFL pool proving that women actually DO use their football knowledge in the Madigan family tree. TIGER BITE AT BIG CAT RESCUE: Like many listeners, Kathleen was obsessed with the Netflix documentary “Tiger King” about private zoo owner Joe Exotic and his feud with Carole Baskin from Tampa-based Big Cat Rescue. Baskin’s big cat sanctuary has come back into the national news last week when a volunteer nearly had her arm torn off by a tiger. Kathleen reviews the circumstances surrounding the incident, and also Baskin’s two dismal performances on Season 29 of ABC’s reality show “Dancing With the Stars.” AIRLINES VS EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMALS: As a frequent flier, Kathleen has strong feelings regarding Emotional Support Animals flying on commercial planes. Until November 2020, the federal government had no law regarding emotional support animals, which effectively required airlines to accommodate any animal that was presented with appropriate documentation from a doctor as a service animal. Airlines maintain that the old policy under the Air Carrier Access Act had been abused and was dangerous to flight crews and passengers, and as a result US Department of Transportation has ruled that only dogs qualify as service animals. Kathleen secretly loved seeing strange Support Animals in the airport every week, including kangaroos, monkeys, and the infamous peacock that made national news when its owner said she couldn’t fly without it. ZOMBIE MINK: Kathleen reads an article from Denmark where several thousand mink carcasses rose from the ground weeks after being buried. Denmark is one of the mink capitals of the world supplying pelts for the global fur industry, and these particular group of weasels were believed to be carriers of the COVID-19 virus. Kathleen evaluates the horror experienced by locals at the sight of the dead animals. 2020 CHRISTMAS STAR: Kathleen tells listeners of a rare occurrence set to take place December 21st, 2020 when Jupiter and Saturn will cross paths and appear to be a mega-star, or “Christmas Star.” Historians believe that the Three Wise Men tracking the birth of Jesus could have been following a similar celestial event, rather than the recorded “Star of Nazareth.”JESUS’ CHILDHOOD HOME DISCOVERED: Kathleen shares breaking news from Jerusalem with listeners, where archaeologists believe to have discovered the childhood home of Jesus. MYSTERY OF THE WEEK: Kathleen discusses the mystery behind the buried treasure of New York City gangster Dutch Schultz. Three groups of treasure hunters are looking for the missing loot, and PBS has released the documentary “Secrets Of The Dead: Gangster’s Gold” detailing the history of Schultz, and the hunt for his missing fortune.

The last thing you can say about Greg Gumbel is he's a wallflower. One of the elder statesmen of sports broadcasting isn't shy when comes to offering an opinion whether it's on his industry or The Rolling Stones. Yes, the Stones whom Gumbel argues is the best band ever, even better than the Beatles. I beg to differ. But Gumbel is best known for his versatility. He's been a play by play voice for many sports like the NFL, the NCAA tournament and the Olympics, plus one of the top studio hosts of this generation.
