While most of his career has been devoted to reggae and its luminaries, his love of rock ‘n' roll started back in 1953 as a devoted fan of Alan Freed. Part One of our discussion starts with Roger remembering one particular concert in 1967 in San Francisco - it was an unforgettable night of rock ‘n' roll, as Bill Graham introduced 2 then unknown acts to an anticipant audience. The concert was a poignant way to say goodbye to the U.S. as the next day he was sent off to Vietnam. We'll discuss the 2 years he spent there working in Psyops while protest rock erupted across the nation. We'll hear Steffens' incredible story about meeting the Countess De Breteuil in Marrakesh in 1971 and how that connected him to the passing of Jim Morrison. Amid all the Twitter hubbub, the lesser known social site Mastodon has seen a surge of new users. Mastodon is a loosely connected network of individually run servers, which all play by their own rules and answer to their own moderators. It's a very different environment than Twitter. But even though Mastodon aims to be a new form of social media, it could still be prone to the same kinds of troubles that have plagued the platforms that existed before it. This week on Gadget Lab, WIRED senior editor of security Andrew Couts joins us to talk about the ins and outs of Mastodon, and whether something like the decentralized network can ever truly replace Twitter. As a 1960s Goldwater conservative, Roger was drafted into the military, shipped to Vietnam to work in psyops, dropped acid and talked his way into a free pass to travel anywhere in-country to help shaken residents and refugees. He was ordered to dump propaganda leaflets from low flying planes on panicked and illiterate villagers, while he distributed Firesign Theatre recordings to U.S. troops from the DMZ to the Mekong Delta, who were tuning in and turning on in the battlefield. Roger returned stateside a different man and spoke out about the war, while sharing his love for poetry and reggae music, eventually writing seven books on the subject. Roger became friends with reggae great Bob Marley and went on to create the world's largest collection of Marley material. Roger takes us down a wild and trippy path through war-torn Vietnam and into the violent streets of 1970s Jamaica for an insider's look at how Reggae music was born in 1968 and quickly overtook the world.

In this episode of the Rock n Roll Librarian Shelley and Christian discuss the book So Much Things to Say: The Oral History of Bob Marley (2017).Roger Steffens, a respected historian and a leading Marley expert, has woven interviews of more than 75 friends, relatives, and lovers, music associates (including original Wailers Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer), into a rich testimony of the life of the reggae king―the full, inside account of how a boy from the slums of Kingston, Jamaica, became a cultural icon and inspiration to millions around the world. Over four decades of interviews tell dramatic, little-known stories about the writing of his beloved songs, his musical development and early sessions with the Wailers, and relationships with Rita Marley and Cindy Breakspeare. It also delves into controversies and mysteries, including the harrowing assassination attempt at 56 Hope Road in Kingston, his defiant performance two nights later with a bullet lodged in his arm, and the discovery and (mis)treatment of his cancer and ultimate tragic death. The intimate voices and frankness of their revelations offer multiple perspectives on key events in the reggae icon's life. This week Cali High has a very special interview with Tom Schnabel: the man that brought Southern California world music on his show 'Morning Becomes Eclectic' at KCRW for decades since 1978. Cali High talks with Tom about the time Peter Tosh was interviewed at KCRW smoking a spliff, and other stories about Roger Steffens and The Reggae Beat, the beginning of Reggae Night at the Hollywood Bowl, and some of his other favorite reggae artists. Among the many hats Schnabel has worn: Author, Journalist, DJ, Educator, LA Lifeguard, host of 'Morning Becomes Eclectic', and former KCRW music supervisor. In 1998 he was awarded the French Medal of Arts and given the title; 'Le Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres', for his work in bringing World Music to America.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/calihighla?fan_landing=true)

It was Steffens who first alerted Paul Simon about African music, leading to the recording of the album Graceland and he has worked with Keith Richards to compile an album of Nyabinghi music recorded in the living room of Richards's Jamaican home. Prior to this, Steffens worked in an army psychological operations unit in Vietnam, after being drafted during the war. He was told to photograph his assignments, a request that began a 50-year relationship with the camera that resulted in an extraordinary archive of images that trace his life and times during a pivotal period in American history. Steffens returned from Vietnam to northern California in the early 70s and began to compulsively photograph his daily life and that of his friends: John Steinbeck IV (son of the Grapes of Wrath writer) and Sean Flynn (son of Errol) – both of whom had reported from Vietnam; war reporter Richard Boyle (the co-writer and subject of Oliver Stone's 1986 film, Salvador), British war photographer Tim Page and Ron Kovic, the paraplegic anti-war activist, whose memoir, Born on the Fourth of July, was adapted into an award winning Oliver Stone film. Photographer Page, who roomed with Steffens in Berkeley, schooled him in photography and his images are an evocation of a freewheeling hippie lifestyle: camping in Marrakech, trekking in the forests of northern California, visiting Stonehenge, and music festivals where the North Vietnamese flag was proudly flown. Now in his late 70s, Steffens finds himself enjoying a second life as an acclaimed photographer thanks partly to his children, Devon and Kate, setting up an Instagram account for their father and posting two pictures a day from his archive, a process that lead to the book The Family Acid in 2015. www.thefamilyacid.com Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, a working photographer, and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Focal Press 2014) and The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Focal Press 2015). His next book New Ways of Seeing: The Democratic Language of Photography will be published by Bloomsbury Academic in 2019. Welcome to the second episode of a 2-part “Best of BUCKiT® with Phil Keoghan” podcast. Over the last year, “BUCKiT®” has been a place for mavericks, innovators, and disrupters. Those who have swerved off the predictable road and epitomize what it means to “tick it before you kick it®.” In this episode, we will take a look back at those who have turned obstacles into opportunities, defied insurmountable odds, broken stereotypes, achieved seemingly impossible physical feats, and even cheated death. My guests also share some words of wisdom, in addition to giving tips for taking life by the horns and applying the “BUCKiT®” mentality to any situation. In this episode, we revisit some of the most memorable moments with guests like Susan Zirinsky, a world class story teller who prefers to be at the frontlines. Mariana van Zeller, another journalist who is not afraid of putting her life on the line for a story. David Downs, after defeating cancer not once, but twice, was then given news that turned his life upside down again. Ethan Zohn, “Survivor-Africa” winner and non-profit CEO, who also experienced the harsh reality of cancer. Phil McCarthy, an elite Ultramarathon runner who has raced in dozens of marathons and ultras, including running in the Badwater Ultramarathon in California’s Death Valley three times. Matt Iseman, TV host, cancer survivor, health advocate, and winner of “The Celebrity Apprentice”, graduated Princeton with honors and completed medical school only to walk away from it all to become a comedian. J.J. Kelly, award winning documentary filmmaker, wildlife conservationist, and explorer, ventures way off the beaten pass, putting his life at risk to cover stories focusing on wildlife crime and conservation. And, hear from Noel Blanc, son of legendary American voice actor, the late Mel Blanc, “the man of a thousand voices in over 5000 cartoons.” Zane Lowe, radio personality, who had a moment in his career where the feeling of rejection and failure almost knocked the confidence right out of him. Roger Steffens, who has the world’s most extensive collection of Marley/ Reggae memorabilia as well as an incredible knowledge of the history of reggae. Kit Karzen, former pro cyclist and proud member of the LGBTQ community, who understands what it feels like to be different, discriminated against, and to have others try to decide your rights for you.
In 1979, just 5 weeks after launching Reggae Beat on the radio in Los Angeles, the host of the show gets a phone call from Island Records. Roger Steffens is about to be asked the question of a lifetime – “Would you like to go on tour with Bob Marley and the Wailers?” Roger Steffens is regarded as one of the Top Ten Most Influential People in Reggae Music. His Reggae Archives, the largest outside of Jamaica, includes over 300,000 titles on tape, CD and vinyl and the world’s most extensive collection of Marley/Reggae memorabilia -- plus hundreds of thousands of other Reggae and Rasta related items, fill over seven rooms in his Los Angeles home. For the past 45 years, this highly respected aficionado has been spreading the sounds and the history of reggae through his radio shows, lecture series, and displays at hundreds of venues. Ras Rojah, a nickname given to Roger by Marley himself, called the collection the most complete in the world. Rolling Stone Magazine said Steffens’ recently published book “So Much Things to Say” is the best Marley book ever! In this interview, Roger shares a wealth of stories and shares some of the secrets behind the legendary Bob Marley.

Roger Steffens is a reggae expert and collector extraordinaire. Also a poet, photographer, raconteur, and personal friend of Bob Marley. Which means… Roger's been to Jamaica many times, mon. If you know anything about reggae, you probably know that Roger co-hosted “The Reggae Beat” on KCRW radio beginning in 1979, the first and only reggae show in Los Angeles at the time. And I consider myself extremely fortunate to be presenting some previously-unreleased Bob Marley music from the singer's personal “Bedroom Tapes” that Roger has graciously allowed me to mix into our interview, “on loan” from “The Archives”….along with several original “dub tracks by The Wailers themselves. THIS IS NOT A TEST - books, music, movies, art, culture and truth
Amble down the path with me, if you will, toward finishing the writing of books, promoting and getting reviewers to read said books, plastic and metal, pushing birds out of nests, motors with moxie, selling window fans, oral histories, Roger Steffens and Bob Marley, faulty and fragile memories, tipping over a street vendor's cart because you're an asshole, Slash, doxing, lynching and the Sony HAP S1/B as lord and savior.
How Roger went from growing up in Brooklyn to witnessing Bob Marley firsthand. The evolution in music represented by reggae. Bob Marley’s broader cultural caricature as opposed to the real Marley. The significance of Rastafari to Bob Marley.

Bob Marley and the Golden Age of Reggae (Titan Books) A launch party for the new photo book by Kim Gottlieb-Walker! The photographer will discuss and sign her book of rare and never-before-seen photos of Bob Marley and other reggae musicians and producers. Kim Gottlieb-Walker's incredibly varied career has covered everything from classic rock and roll, reggae and politics in the 60's and 70's to working on major motion pictures and television shows. While still at UCLA (where she received a BA in Motion Picture production) and shortly thereafter, she shot for underground LA newspapers and magazines like Crawdaddy and Music World. Her classic portrait of Jimi Hendrix was shot when she was only 20 and her High Times cover of Bob Marley remains their most popular cover ever. She also shot the stills for John Carpenter's Halloween, The Fog, Christine and Escape from New York and worked at Paramount for nine years as the production photographer for Cheers and five years for Family Ties. In 1975 and 1976 she covered Bob Marley both in California (behind the scenes, in interviews and performances) and at his home in Jamaica as well as traveling all over Jamaica to document reggae musicians and producers. Those rarely and never-before-seen photos appear in her new book Bob Marley and the Golden Age of Reggae which includes commentary by writer/director Cameron Crowe, her husband Jeff Walker (who was the national director of publicity for Island Records in the USA in the '70s) and reggae historian Roger Steffens. She has served as one of the elected representatives for still photographers on the National Executive Board of IATSE Local 600, the International Cinematographers Guild for over two decades.
