Brooklyn New York's Barclays Center is set to host a landmark moment in dancehall history as Vybz Kartel headlines Reggae Fest on April 11 and 12, marking his first return concert in the United States in 20 years. The event, led by prominent promoter CJ Milan, has already generated significant momentum, with tickets selling out rapidly upon release.Milan, who secured Kartel as the first solo headliner for Reggaefest, a party event that started in Manhattan and now travels across the U.S., opens up about the significance of the booking. “Usually, I like to put something for everybody, but Kartel is a generational (artist). You can rock out with him.”The journey to finalizing the show started with Milan's ambition and he record of staging successful reggae events in New York City. “First of all, nobody could get in contact with Kartel,” Milan revealed in an exclusive interview with World Music Views. “I called every manager, and then I got frustrated. When I get frustrated, I do it myself.”Taking matters into her own hands, Milan connected with veteran dancehall producer Skatta Burrell, who is also Kartel's road manager, a move that expedited the process. “It went really fast,” she said. “Then a couple of people (from Kartel's team) came down for Massive.”She recalled a pivotal moment in negotiations when producer TJ Records sought clarity on logistics. “TJ was asking me questions about certain things and said, ‘How soon can you get to Jamaica?' I said I need three days.”Determined to present a compelling case, Milan went to the studio, curated a Kartel mix, and synchronized it with footage from her last Barclays Center show, crafting a persuasive presentation.

The History Of Reggaetón, Reggae and Dancehall as told by Maxine Isis Stowe, the former Columbia Records executive, sits at the intersection of Reggaetón, Reggae and Dancehall. She played a pivotal role in signing acts like Shy Guy singer Diana King, who she had a similar vision for her as Rihanna achieved, if only Diana could have let go off the small island influences and assimilate her sound more into American pop and sing more like fellow Sony artist Mariah Carey. “When I saw Rihanna break through, I thought that was what I had in mind for Diana. I would say that Diana's reluctance to be fully Americanized was her limitation because her voice was big enough, but culturally she couldn't let go,” Stowe said. She is also known for her significant contributions to the development of dancehall in the 90s and early 2000s in the US, serving as A&R and executive producer for several chart-topping hits and albums, resulting in over 5 million in album and single sales. This includes Ini Kamoze's “Here Comes The Hotstepper,” Mad Cobra's “Flex,” “Bad Boys Soundtrack,” “Cool Runnings Soundtrack,” "Chant Down Babylon" album by Bob Marley, Half Way Tree by Damian Marley and more projects that have achieved Platinum and Gold status in the US. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/worldmusicviews/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/worldmusicviews/support

In 1982, Grammy nominated reggae band Musical Youth achieved global success with their hit “Pass The Dutchie,” a song based on The Mighty Diamonds' “Pass The Kouchie.” Three decades later, members Dennis Seaton, Michael Grant, Kelvin Grant, Frederick Waite Junior (Junior Waite), and a representative of Patrick Waite's estate initiated legal proceedings in 2004 against their lawyers according to court documents obtained by WMV. Forensic Musicologist Brian McBrearty says he believes the copyright lawsuit filed by Steely and Clevie against the reggaeton community is silly and has no basis. The riddim making duo submitted a copyright documents for the 1990s dancehall hit song “Dem Bow” by Shabba Ranks in a Los Angeles Court, but Brian, speaking exclusively with WMV says that will not be enough to stake claim over and entire genre even if the riddim is similar to "Dem Bow" genre songs. A California judges set to decide if the case will go to jury on Thursday September 22 based on evidence presented by the plaintiffs and the dismissal request by lawyers the defendants which include Pitbull, Drake, Justin Timberlake, Karol G, Bad Bunny, Daddy Yankee and more. If the case goes to trial, a forensic musicologist like Brian will be called in to determine whether or not there is a common thread between 1800 reggaeton songs and Steely and Clevie's 1989 riddim 'Fish Market'. The San Fransisco native admits he is not acquainted with reggae and dancehall culture and only became interested upon hearing about the Steely and Clevie Case. He also says he has been hired by record labels and advertising companies to ensure there is not infringement in songs they may use. JoAnn Squillace and Stephen Drummond join WMV to talk about a list of reggaeton songs that have been brought into evidence to support the ongoing copyright infringement case against several latin artists, producers, publishing companies and record labels filed by Dancehall producer pioneers Steely and Clevie. Since this conversation over 1000 new songs were added to the lawsuit. The tracks which are alleged to have infringed upon the 80s dancehall riddim “Fish Market” produced by the duo are presented into evidence on the basis that they sample copies of the composition or simply copied the composition without permission. Reggaeton King Daddy Yankee alone is accused of copying the Fish Market composition on over 43 songs including his 41x Latin Platinum hit Con Calma with Snow which interpolates Snow's dancehall hit Informa. Brazilian singer Annita, who was just released from Warner Music after she ranted on social media about wanting to leave the label has 14 songs on the evidence list named Exhibit A. So far 107 summonses have been served to defendants this year alone as the trial is set to get under way but in a motion filed on Friday attorneys Jean G. Vidal-Font and Bradley J. Mullins who are reprenting latin superstar Juan Luis Morera Luna p/k/a Wisin and Drake real name Aubrey Graham, applied to dismiss requests for the artists to come to court to answer to the infringements on the grounds that they were not served at their right addresses. Bad Bunny and Drake‘s MÍA which has 1.4 billion YouTube views has been named as one of the songs that copied the Fish Market riddim. Harvey Mason Jr. CEO Of The Recoding Academy says there was never a threat to discontinue the Best Reggae Album Category at the Grammys and there has been over 700 submissions over the last 5 years. Over the years there has been reports from Grammy voting members that the reggae category has been under threat of being removed from the awards and that it makes no sense to even consider a dancehall category. I asked him about the truth of those assertions and Harvey says that is far from the truth and indeed reggae has had many good submission over the years.
Sshh shares her journey from Punk to reggae music and being the principal of Trojan Jamaica, a mother and band leader. “SSHH's music … doesn't sacrifice the knack for melody Zak picked up playing with groups like The Who and Oasis, or by being the son of one of the most melodious groups in rock history.” – Entertainment Weekly “The duo deliver a faithful, but blistering cover of “Problems” alongside Matlock and Cook, with Liguz injecting her melodic vocal turn with plenty of Johnny Rotten-esque snottiness.” – Rolling Stone Magazine “Sshh Liguz and Zak Starkey (son of Ringo) are the brains behind SSHH, the electro-punk duo. This cut of ‘Get Up Stand Up' takes a more maximalist approach than the original Wailers tune and translates as stadium-ready upon the first listen.” – Stereogum “Liguz's singing voice is flawlessly punk—ice queen Siouxsie Sioux, with the spunk of Johnny Rotten and the balls to take on any genre of music.” – RIFF Magazine “A pelvis swinging slice of gnarly power-pop rock with vocals so saucy they make ketchup seem like mere water” – NME Magazine SSHH is a rare breed of band. With comparisons ranging from Aphex Twin to The Sex Pistols, these guys are extreme. Fronted by the force of nature that is the singer Sshh Liguz, whose vocals have been described as a mixture of "Bowie, Siouxie Soux, Iggy Pop, Karen O & Robert Plant" she's a pint sized pocket rocket to be reckoned with. By her side is the man of the hour- Zak Starkey, wielding his weapon of choice--a guitar--that takes your breath away and makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up on end in excitement. With awesome intent he moves around creating sounds to make you move! Lyrical and dynamic- the duo make, break, and make music again, drawing on inspiration from personal experience as well as the wonders of the world and the seedy underbelly that seethes just beneath the surface, no stone is left unturned. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/worldmusicviews/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/worldmusicviews/support

Damian is in full character as he laments ‘That one here named “you” I know you think that I'm a hunting boy And I don't really wanna waste my time' as he goes back and forth with Yendry. In the music video the two can be seen taunting each other and playing into the camera their frustrations with each other. The Dominican and Italian singer whose musical style is a mix between Bachata, Merengue, salsa, R&B and electro flows comfortably with the Gong's reggae flow as she sings the hook “I'm not staying over tonight but if you had to choose, would you see me twice We keep on playing with fire, Someone's gonna loose burning in desire”. After entering X factor Italy in 2012 Yendry earned her a record deal with Sony Music Italy. In 2020 after the release of the singles Barrio and Nena she achieved international popularity and she signed a double record deal contract with RCA Records and Sony Music Latin. She was nominated Best New artist at the 2021 MTV Millennium Awards. In this interview we talk about her Jamaican roots, her Buju Banton connection and how she uses being a woman to her advantage. She also answers whether or not she is the Beyonce of her family. Hi Stefflon, Wassup, how are you doing? I am very good thank you. I remember seeing you for the first time when Ebro posted you, so beautiful, aggressive and potent. Where are you from? I was born in England but my parents were born and raised in Jamaica and I still have sisters and brothers living in Jamaica. What's your Buju Banton connection, I noticed you were one of the few foreign artists on his show. I actually knew someone that knew him. When he was incarcerated I used to send my love and I feel like because he knew I used to do that, he just felt like a certain respect level was there and he said he really liked my stuff and wanted me on his album so he reached out. And you did a good song on his album and I loved your performance, but I also love your freestyle performances with a bunch of people behind you. It seems like you will rock any house, why is that your signature style? I feel like as a creative when I am creating it is more effective when more people are involved. I bring people together with my creation. If you are listening to my music in a car or at home I want you to get the same vibe when you hear the song. What's ‘Daily Duppy'? It's a show called Grime Daily on YouTube. They get artists to come on the channel. They stand up by a mic and a lot of UK artists get on that platform to display their skills and show people what they do. Dutchavelli is your brother. I discovered him on Daily Duppy? Yes He is. Have you done a collaboration with him? We got a couple hits coming. I notice you are the Beyoncé of your family, are you from a musical family? (Laughs) I wouldn't say I am the Beyoncé of my family but I do come from a musical family. All my brothers and sisters all have some involvement in music. Do you find it harder as a woman in the industry? Not at all. I always used being a woman at my advantage. It's the people's choice and most people that turn up to shows are women so being a woman I stand out. So I do use being a woman to my advantage. Thank you so much Stefflon Don. Thank You!
