The legal services industry in the United States is a $300 billion business—bigger than any in the world. In recent weeks, U.S. President Donald Trump has targeted parts of the industry to further his own narrow agenda. Adam and Cameron discuss the possible impact. Also on the show: For the first time, Ones and Tooze is asking for listener support. Adam and Cameron describe the reasons—and the challenging economics of podcasts—in the episode. It seemed that after the re-occupation of the Rhineland that Hitler had gotten the measure of the UK and France, and that what had seemed impossible previously was now quite the opposite. To that end, he was finally able to achieve one of the biggest goals of both the Nazis and German nationalists in general: the unification of Austria to Germany. Best Of: How the Fed Is ‘Shaking the Entire System'

The Ezra Klein Show

Play Episode Listen Later May 5, 2023 85:56

On Monday, First Republic Bank folded before being sold by regulators to JPMorgan Chase. At the time, it was the 14th largest bank in the U.S. and it is the second-largest American bank by assets to ever collapse. The story of First Republic's fall is similar to that of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature before it – the value of the bank's assets began to plummet as the Fed raised interest rates to fight inflation, causing a crisis of confidence among investors and depositors. This is exactly the kind of situation that the economic historian Adam Tooze warned of when he came on the show in October of 2022. In that conversation, Tooze argued that the Fed's interest rate hikes were “shaking the entire system” – putting pressure on every level of the global financial system, from regional banks to countries that borrow on the U.S. dollar. It would only be a matter of time, he predicted, before things started breaking. Well, things are certainly breaking now, and it's very possible there's more to come. The Fed decided to raise interest rates once again on Wednesday, bringing them above 5 percent for the first time in more than 15 years. So it felt like the right time to revisit our conversation about the fragile, uncertain future of the global economy at this history-making moment and the Fed's role in it. We also discuss what the British financial market meltdown means for the rest of the world, how the interest rate hikes in rich countries export inflation to other countries, the looming possibility of a global recession, why Tooze believes the confluence of high inflation, rising interest rates and high levels of debt points to an economic “polycrisis” unlike any the world has seen, why countries in South Asia are experiencing a particularly severe form of polycrisis, how the Fed should weigh its mandate to bring down inflation against the global consequences of its actions, why he believes analogies to the American inflationary period of the 1970s are misguided and more.Editor's note: Due to a technical error, a previous version of this episode featured the wrong audio file. ‘Polycrisis', a relatively new term, was in the air at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting in January, where people were discussing the intertwined global issues of war, economic uncertainty, inflation, recession and the climate crisis, among others. But does that word really tell us anything new about the world we live in and the challenges we face? Historian Adam Tooze tells us about the origins of the term and of the polycrisis itself.   Adam Tooze is Professor of History at the University of Columbia in New York. “There are moments when history making creeps up on you,” writes the economic historian Adam Tooze. “This is one of those moments.”Countries across the world are raising interest rates at unprecedented speeds. That global monetary tightening is colliding with spiking food and energy prices, financial market instability, high levels of emerging market debt and economies still struggling to recover from the Covid pandemic. Alone, each of these factors would warrant concern; combined, they could be catastrophic. We're already beginning to see what happens as these dynamics intersect: Britain just experienced a bond market meltdown that threatened one of the most advanced financial systems in the world. Developing countries like Sri Lanka, Argentina and Pakistan are experiencing political and economic crises. The World Bank believes we could be headed for a severe global recession.Tooze is the director of the European Institute at Columbia University and the author of multiple histories of financial crises and near crises and of the excellent Chartbook newsletter. He believes this particular confluence of high inflation, rising interest rates and high levels of debt points to an economic “polycrisis” unlike any the world has seen. And he and others have argued that the U.S. Fed's decision to raise interest rates is a core driver of that crisis. So this is a conversation about the fragile, uncertain future of the global economy at this history-making moment and the Fed's role in it. We discuss what the British financial market meltdown means for the rest of the world, how the interest rate hikes in rich countries export inflation to other countries, the looming possibility of a global recession, why Tooze believes something could break in the global financial system, why countries in South Asia are experiencing a particularly severe form of “polycrisis,” how the Fed should weigh its mandate to bring down inflation against the global consequences of its actions, why he believes analogies to the American inflationary period of the 1970s are misguided and more.Mentioned:“Slouching Towards Utopia by J Bradford DeLong — fuelling America's global dream” by Adam ToozeBook recommendations:The Neapolitan Novels by Elena FerranteYouthquake by Edward PaiceSlouching Towards Utopia by J. Proptech startup Pacaso is taking its public relations strategy to the next level. The San Francisco-based company helps people buy the second home of their dreams with a co-ownership model that has sparked a lot of controversy in some places. While the general perception of Pacaso is a belief that it contributes to the housing crisis, Pacaso is showcasing its model as part of the “solution.”Hi, I'm Kathy Fettke and this is Real Estate News for Investors. If you like our podcast, please subscribe and leave us a review. Pacaso has caused a dust-up in several places as full-time residents fight back against short-term rentals. Many critics see Pacaso through this lens, but it's not a short-term rental operation.Instead of renting the home out to a stream of different occupants over the days, weeks, months, and years, Pacaso homes are purchased by up to eight buyers and each buyer gets to use the home for a percentage of the year that corresponds to the buyer's percentage of the purchase price. Pacaso manages and maintains the home, but the people who use it are co-owners, who use it on a continual basis. (1)Pacaso as Part of the SolutionThe message that Pacaso is currently trying to convey is that many people own second homes that sit empty and unused for 90% of the year. With the current shortage of available homes, Pacaso points out that the typical second-home approach is wasteful. It says that co-ownership can help reduce that waste by combining the use of up to eight second homes into one home that has as many as eight owners. As Pacaso's vice president of public affairs, Colin Tooze (tooz), said in a press release: "One significant, but less-discussed, contributor to the housing crisis is a wasteful legacy model of second-home ownership. While no company can solve this complex set of problems on its own, Pacaso offers a sustainable alternative that combines multiple families into one luxury home." (2)Pacaso also claims that the co-ownership model provides significant benefits to the community in the form of economic activity that is ten times what you'd get with the typical second home. But Pacaso says it is still working on ways to publicize its value, which is why the company recently announced the formation of a bipartisan government advisory board. Formation of Government Advisory BoardPacaso says it's a priority to work collaboratively with elected officials, and the board will help the company do that more effectively. Among the inaugural members of the board are current and former elected officials from major metros around the country, including:1 - Steve Benjamin (Chair), Former Mayor of Columbia, South Carolina, and past President of the US Conference of Mayors2 - Steve Adler, Mayor of Austin, Texas3 - Michael Hancock, Mayor of Denver, Colorado4 - Danny Perez, Member, Florida House of Representatives5 - Alexis Podesta, Former California Secretary of Business, Consumer Services, and HousingIn a statement issued by the board chairman, Steve Benjamin, says: “Pacaso's innovative second home co-ownership model is a value-add to communities across the United States,” said Steve Benjamin, former Mayor of Columbia, SC and past President of the US Conference of Mayors. “Pacaso consolidates second home demand into fewer homes, taking pressure off of housing inventory for first-time home buyers and middle class families. This is the thoughtful and sustainable approach to housing we need right now, and I'm proud to help advise the company as it works to bring this model to more communities.” (3)Pacaso Reached Unicorn Status in Six MonthsPacaso launched in October of 2020 as demand for second homes skyrocketed during the pandemic. As reported by Fortune, it reached unicorn status just six months later. That means it was worth more than $1 billion in just six months! Tooze told Fortune that he wants Pacaso homes to be good neighbors, and the board will help solve any challenges. He says: “If that helps us be more thoughtful in how we approach solutions that address the needs of the company and communities where we operate, everyone wins.” (4)You'll find a link to the Pacaso articles in the show notes at newsforinvestors.com. On the climate emergency. We are specially unlocking this episode of our monthly Reading Club – the concluding episode of the first half of the 2022 syllabus (download it here). If you'd like full access to all of the Reading Club, go to patreon.com/bungacast We discuss Andreas Malm's Climate, Corona, Chronic Emergency and Adam Tooze's review essay, "Ecological Leninism". How convincing is Malm's call for Soviet war communism as a model for responding to climate change?  We also approach these readings in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the knock-on consequences for energy politics. And what should we make of Tooze's  contrast of social democratic time-frames with the eco-Leninist one?

The investigation eventually focuses on Jonathan Jones, the boyfriend of the Toozes' daughter, and after his thumbprint is found on a saucer inside the farmhouse, he is charged with the murders.
