This episode is brought to you from sunny San Diego, where the 2024 annual IBR/SBL/AAR conference was hosted. Matt offers thoughts on the value of academic conferences, not least with respect to the Bible. In short, deep reflection happens best in community, where the back-and-forthness of dialogue can take place and where encouragement and critique can blossom. Biblical hermeneutics, after all, is a dialogical endeavor, one that simply cannot happen in the silo of individualism. In this vein, Matt also discusses anti-intellectualism in the church and why the academic study of Scripture is a gift to the kingdom. + + + Support the podcast via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheBibleUnmuted Read Matt's blog: matthewhalsted.substack.com Matt's newest book: The End of the World As You Know It Don't forget to subscribe to The Bible (Unmuted)!

Mark 12:28-31 For many people the idea of accepting Christianity means you must reject rational thought and turn off your brain. Unfortunately, some in the church have perpetuated this idea by leaning on emotionalism. Yet the Bible calls us to think carefully, to understand God’s world around us, and to love the Lord our God with all our minds.
Mark 12:28-31 One of the reasons people deconstruct their faith is because they have been given the impression that to follow Jesus and be a Christian you need to turn off your brain, ignore “the science,” and follow blindly with an unquestioning, emotional acceptance. But God, who created mankind with a body, soul, and spirit, calls Christians to love and follow Him with their whole being. Intellectual rigor and robust theological training with discernment are a necessary part of what it means to follow Christ.

Intellectual rigor and robust theological training with discernment are a necessary part of what it means to follow Christ.
Mark 12:30-31 Christianity is not an abstract faith but belief in objective truth claims about God, the world, and humanity. To neglect engaging our minds is to propagate the lie that Christianity is anti-intellectual, fail at disciple-making by making shallow disciples, fail at evangelism by not thoughtfully engaging competing truth claims, and sin against the God who commands us to love Him with all of our minds.
A (surprisingly coherent) dialogue on arguments of anti-intellectualism in popular reading - or alternatively, why people gotta hate on fairy smut? Stay bothered, readers!
In this episode of the New Evangelicals Podcast, Tim and April discuss various topics including Donald Trump's conversation with Elon Musk, the leaked Project 2025 training videos, and the conservative Christian view on climate change. They also touch on the anti-science sentiment within conservative Christianity and the impact it has on shaping policies and beliefs. The hosts provide commentary and humor throughout the episode. In this part of the conversation, Tim and April discuss the weirdness and oddity of certain aspects of right-wing politics, particularly within the evangelical community. They highlight the contradiction between the claim of being pro-family and pro-American while engaging in bizarre and extreme behavior. They mention the Christians for Harris and Evangelicals for Harris groups as examples of this mobilization. They emphasize the importance of thinking about political engagement in a wise and Jesus-centered way, rather than blindly aligning with a particular party. In this final part of the conversation, Tim and April discuss the intolerance and narrow-mindedness often found within evangelical circles. Takeaways Donald Trump's conversation with Elon Musk highlights the disconnect between the billionaire class and the average person, despite attempts to portray themselves as 'men of the people'. The leaked Project 2025 training videos reveal the anti-science and conspiracy-driven mindset within conservative circles, particularly regarding climate change and population control. The anti-intellectualism and dogmatic beliefs within conservative Christianity contribute to the rejection of scientific evidence and hinder progress in addressing climate change. It is important to differentiate between conservative evangelical Christians who hold a literal interpretation of the Bible and those who accept scientific evidence and advocate for responsible environmental stewardship. There is a growing mobilization of Christians who are rejecting the Trump-MAGA movement and advocating for a different approach to political discourse. It is important to think about political engagement in a wise and Jesus-centered way, rather than blindly aligning with a particular party. In this episode of the CEU Press Podcast, host Andrea Talabér (CEU Press/CEU Review of Books) sat down with Éric Fassin (Université Paris 8) to discuss his new book with CEU Press entitled, State Anti-Intellectualism and the Politics of Gender and Race: Illiberal France and Beyond (2024). Éric Fassin examines the trend of state anti-intellectualism in France using the nation as a case study to demonstrate that this tendency is not limited to ostensibly illiberal regimes. He argues that today's world requires an examination of this phenomenon beyond Cold War geopolitical divisions and highlights a global shift towards authoritarian neoliberalism. His book is a plea for the political urgency of intellectual work in a global moment of political anti-intellectualism. Éric's book is part of our new series, CEU Press Perspectives. The series offers the latest viewpoints on both new and perennial issues, these books address a wide range of topics of critical importance today. The new series, originating from an international collection of leading authors, encourages us to look at issues from a different viewpoint, to think outside the box, and to stimulate debate. You can learn more about the series here. The CEU Press Podcast delves into various aspects of the publishing process: from crafting a book proposal, finding a publisher, responding to peer review feedback on the manuscript, to the subsequent distribution, promotion and marketing of academic books. Joining us today is law professor and author John Inazu. We will unpack the deeper reasons why people don't trust mainstream media, government, and sadly, even many pastors. We're also going to discuss a common cultural lean toward anti-intellectualism, and the influence of AI and deep fakes upon our psyches which directly affect our mental and emotional health. And in an election year, we're going to take time to learn communication strategies to disagree with others more effectively...and respectively. All of these topics have an influence on our mental and emotional health, and that's why I brought John to the show. Episode Links: Show Notes Buy my NEW BOOK "Healing What You Can't Erase" here! We are tempted as Christians to at times believe that deeper study will lead to a heady and withered faith. I am convinced that the exact opposite is true. That in fact deeper study, when it is saturated with Christ, will lead us into the most thrilling faith we have ever known.
In this week's episode, I explore the rise and (inevitable) fall of the commentary genre. I cover the origins of this content, the rise of this genre on YouTube, and why I believe we're about to see its downfall. I look at how the rise of anti-intellectualism, a decline in media literacy, and the death of the monoculture— all amplified by the introduction of TikTok— will likely be the main reasons for the downfall of commentary content. Systematic Theology and the Life of the Mind Few mistakes are more crippling to Christian witness within the Christian community than anti-intellectualism. Few theological errors violate more theological doctrines more radically. In his Pulitzer-Prize-winning work, Anti-Intellectualism and in American Life, historian Richard Hofstadter defined anti-intellectualism as a “resentment of the life of the mind, and those who are considered to represent it; and a disposition to constantly minimize the value of that life.” I agree, but will add a few nuances to this: An anti-intellectual demeans or even rejects the worth of reasons, arguments, and evidence in the shaping of individual beliefs and overall worldviews and holds in contempt or derision those who insist that the intellectual should be fed not starved. Few who read this message are in danger of anti-intellectualism, but many outside the Christian academy are in cognitive jeopardy. But this argument will further the defense of the sanctified intellect so that the mission of God will go forth in even greater power. On January 28th, Bjørn Andreas Bull-Hansen published the video "Stop Celebrating Stupidity | The Rise of Anti-Intellectualism," which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmFn619GnrI. Are we celebrating stupidity? Have we descended into anti-intellectual madness these days? Key topics:✔️ At 7:28, I believe he hits the nail on the head when he talks about the attitude of curiosity. ✔️If we are celebrating stupidity, who benefits from that? Because you can rest assured: someone does. ✔️It seems like the media plays fast and loose with the term "expert." IMO, the notion of an expert or even an economist has become: this person is willing to say what we want them to say and nothing more.
There was international outcry in 2011 when the celebrated Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was arrested at Beijing airport and imprisoned. The charges against him were vague. So what was Ai Weiwei really in prison for?To begin to answer this, we need to understand the historical background: the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Claiming to purge the country of 'impure' elements, students were encouraged to attack their teachers. Intellectuals were exiled. Books were burned. And the purge didn't stop there. On this episode of Bad People, Dr Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen explore anti-intellectualism, and how politicians have exploited its appeal. What is the difference between intelligence and intellectualism? What can the anti-intellectualism scale teach us about the psychological origins of a lack of trust in experts? And, what does all of this have to do with art?CREDITS Presenters: Dr Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen Producer: Laura Northedge Assistant Producer: Hannah Ward Editor: Anna Lacey Music: Matt Chandler Commissioning Executive: Dylan Haskins Commissioning Assistant Producer: Adam Eland#BadPeople_BBC

We discuss (and Anderson Cooper needs to go F@ck Himself). We trace the money funding the 118 traitors in Congress. Fascists…this Bud's for you. Randy talks turkey about the Cult of Anti Intellectualism sweeping the globe. We also have a puppet show.

Anti intellectualism is having a moment. Express an opinion online and they'll be at least five people in your mentions telling you that you're wrong. Maybe you spend your morning drinking coffee with your partner, causing uproar from those who have to be at work in the early hours. Perhaps you hate Marvel films, or dare to prefer one type of bread over another. But is our inability to contextualise the posts we see a form of anti-intellectualism? Are the binaries of 'high' and 'low' culture changing? And should we just let people enjoy things? This week Ione and Eden are discussing whether this constant dumbing down of discourse, art, and everything in between is more insidious than it may seem.Order Ione's book, Poor Little Sick Girls, here!Want to support the podcast? This week, in honor of July 4th and the US Government seemingly falling apart around us, we're settling into a topic we've touched on briefly in the past: Anti-Intellectualism. Join us as we learn what it is, where it started, how it's impacted the LDS faith, and how we can combat it going forward. Warning: This episode may make you enraged when you realize there are finally coherent words to describe what's been happening to the people around you over the last few years.
P&C drink and review a strong ale from Lagunitas, then do five topics in five minutes each. 1. Do you like cringe comedy? Do you feel embarrassed when someone else is doing something embarrassing? Do you like that sort of comedy? Does that say anything about you? 2. Earring boy. Are we allowed to think less of someone if they dress like an idiot? At some point, "being me" is no excuse -- unless you can work in some gender fluidity thing. Then all bets are off. 3. Anti-intellectualism. The boys discuss three possible definitions. (1) You never study anything in any depth. (2) You're not interested in so-called intellectual things. (3) You're skeptical of elite intellectuals. 4. Lee Greenwood and his patriotic song. What's with the "at least" part? It seems to take away from the positive tone of the song. 5. Snuck into the "infrastructure" bill is a proposal to make breathalyzers required on all new cars. Isn't this assuming guilt? And what does it have to do with infrastructure?
In this episode, Anne Marie talks to Yeshiva University professor emerita Ellen Schrecker about the history leading up to today's anti-intellectualism.Ellen has been involved with the politics of higher education and academic freedom for decades. According to Ellen, the current right-wing campaign against teaching critical race theory and other so-called “divisive concepts” is by far the most serious threat to academic freedom (as well as K-12 education) the United States has ever experienced. Schrecker's research and experience enable her to speak about the impact of these issues, as well as explain why today's anti-intellectualism is more dangerous than that of the McCarthy era. She believes that if the repressive measures now coursing through state legislatures and other political bodies are to be repulsed, the academic community and engaged citizens must offer a stronger response than they have until now. France's biggest-ever court case continues with dramatic interventions from witnesses and defendents. A bill to criminalise bullying at school and university raises questions. The 19th century roots of growing anti-intellectualism in France. The trial of 14 men accused of taking part and planning the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks is now at the halfway point. RFI journalist Michael Fitzpatrick has been covering the trial from the outset, and has written about it as a “ritual” of justice. He talks about the drama inherent in such a ritual, and the impact the trial has had on survivors of the attacks and families of victims – many of whom are participating as 'partie civil' (civil party). Their desire to put their suffering and grief into public record may well extend the trial beyond May, when it was scheduled to end. (Listen @0'00) Around one out of 10 children in France have experienced some form of harassment at school and a draft bill going through parliament would make bullying in schools and universities a criminal offence. But is this an adapted response? At a centre outside of Paris to help bullied kids, parents and children talk about feeling helpless faced with harassment which has pushed some children to take their own lives. (Listen @16'50'') Intellectuals play an important role in public life in France, but a certain anti-intellectualism is growing, with critiques of race and gender studies in universities, and nationalists positioning themselves against leftist universalism. The negative connotation is not new however and can be traced back to the 19th century, in an article published on 1 February 1898 in the midst of the Dreyfus Affair. “In this episode Brian Brodersen and Kellen Criswell discuss the past and present of Calvary Chapel on formal ministry training and education. Important questions tackled in their conversation include: - Why has Calvary Chapel often been labeled ‘Anti-intellectual'? - Why are many Calvary Chapel leaders today experiencing new openness to using theological seminaries for part of their ministry preparation? - Why are the flagship Calvary Chapel Bible Colleges in Europe and North America pursuing formal accreditation? - What do these changes mean (and not mean) regarding Calvary Chapel's historic commitment to the idea that formal education is not a necessary prerequisite for serving in ministry leadership?”
