Dr. Kate Pate: Respiratory Neurophysiology, Stress & TBI, Science-Backed Benefits of Breathwork and The Intersection Between Faith & Science

Yoga With Jake Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 12, 2024 86:23

Dr. Kate Pate is a PhD neurophysiologist, coach, entrepreneur, and researcher. Her doctoral research focused on respiratory neurophysiology and understanding the brain-breath-body connection. She explored her fascination around this subject further and through a different lens by later becoming a yoga, meditation, and breathwork instructor. This included obtaining her RYT200, somatic meditation training, and trauma-informed yoga training for the military community. During her postdoctoral fellowship and early faculty days, Kate's research focused on redox biology as it relates to inflammatory disease processes and injuries, including traumatic brain injury (TBI) and spinal cord injury. TBI has always been a primary area of interest for her - from a scientific perspective as much as a personal one, having sustained multiple head injuries herself. Kate later became a medical school professor and research director before being pulled into industry where she became a program director for a new combat casualty care military research program. Because she had a brother who was a medic in the Special Operations community at the time, this seemed like a perfect way to apply her research skills in a more meaningful way. Eventually, Kate decided to start her own organization with a close friend and business partner, and she founded Coruna Medical, a military-specific medical company that creates innovative solutions to address the medical problems facing military service members and veterans. By spending so much time working with active duty service members, veterans, and first responders in the medical space, Kate made lots of friends among these communities and soon realized that many within her network were struggling with complex health issues. What began as her best attempt to explain physiology, TBI, stress, toxic exposures, trauma, and mental health soon turned into her passion and then her purpose.  When Kate decided to make helping her friends an official career path, she pursued formal coaching training rooted in a transformational recovery perspective, which included specific training around psychedelic integration and addiction recovery. This was followed by training in functional medicine through The Institute for Functional Medicine, and then further training in psychedelic medicine as a facilitator. She cares deeply about her faith and the spiritual health of others, and to that end she is currently pursuing a graduate degree in theology.  Kate has served on multiple boards, worked with numerous organizations – including the NFL – and has made many podcast appearances over the years. In her spare time, you can find her breathing in the fresh mountain air. Kate's instagram: @doc.pate

Yoga is challenging, but it forces you to be in the moment. The more times we put ourselves in the moment we push ourselves.  The postures provide you a physical map to lead you into the moment. This week we are talking yoga and rebuilding the mountain that is self. Through the trauma fires, fisticuffs and rage, Marc Salvi rebuilt his mountain and its construction of yoga, metal and connection.    Welcome to episode two hundred fourteen of Above Ground Podcast. Another week, another real conversation about mental health and wellness from the peer-spective. Summer is dashing like a thoroughbred and before we know it the race will be run. Prioritizing self care and exercise is important. Yoga may be the perfect addition to your physical, mental and spiritual health.    Our guest this week is Marc Salvi. Marc is a Nippertown based yoga teacher. Marc's classes are designed to bring non yoga people to the practice. Marc came to yoga for help recovering from his aches and pains of the gym rat life. In 2021 Marc completed his RYT200 with Michelle Pollard, owner of Studio 4 Hot Yoga and Pilates of Schenectady, NY. Marc aims to help students cultivate greater body awareness by becoming mindful of every part of the body. With breath work, building strength, gaining mobility, and stability, you will move through your life smoother and more confident.    Marc can be found on the schedules of Studio 4 Hot Yoga & Pilates, 151 Lafayette Street, Schenectady, NY. Marc also teaches in Slingerlands at JAI Yoga School, 5 Vista Blvd, Slingerlands, NY.    When Marc is not teaching yoga, he takes part in his other passions. He is a dad of twins(boy/girl). Marc trains Tae Kwon Do with them and is a huge fan of the martial arts. His day job is a  construction project manager with more than twenty years and counting in the industry.  Not to mention he loves metal and hardcore music.    Thanks for listening to this week's Above Ground Podcast. Please stop by our table at NipperFest this Saturday and say hey!!! NipperFest will be rocking from 11a-10pm, Saturday at Central Park Music Haven, Schenectady, NY.  Get there and support local music. Until we meet again next week, get well, be safe, stay ABOVE.

No matter how proficient you are at teaching yoga, the reality is that reaching an audience for your wisdom does requires having students show up to classes. This means a basic understanding of digital marketing is important for anyone hoping to get the word out about their classes, workshops or teaching avenues.  Resistant as many yogis are, being flexible and adapting to the changing world is vital to expand your reach and continue to share the teachings of yoga today. Digital marketing expert and RYT -200, Emily Dailey, shares her advice about how yoga teachers can  embrace Digital marketing in support of their careers to keep current with shifting means of communication today.  Learn more about Heartwood Yoga Institute and our yoga programs at www.rytcertification and join our blog at Heartwoodwisdom.com.
