This is for entertainment/informational purposes only! Breathe in. Breathe out. Have you ever paid attention to what really happens as your body gathers oxygen? Does your chest puff out? With a little training and discipline, you can integrate this into your own life and see the results so many others have! Some Topics We Discussed: What is Buteyko breathing? (2:43) What makes this technique different from other breathing techniques? (6:52) Why does Ed tape his mouth shut when he sleeps? I have thought for many years that deep breathing through the belly was THE way to breathe. The science doesn't support this advice. Now, granted, breathing into your lower belly is much better than in your chest, Dr. Buteyko discovered that people breathe too often, taking in a larger volume of air than they actually need. What happens when we do that? When we breathe frequently and take in a large volume of air repetitively as most people do, whether they breathe into their chest (not so good) or their bellies (good), our carbon dioxide levels drop too low. When that happens, the oxygen we carry around in our hemoglobin doesn't detach from the molecule to feed our cells. Since reading Patrick McKeown's book The Breathing Cure, I've told several athletes to try closing their mouths as they exercise. Miraculously, they all said it made a big difference!  In fact, one gal I was practicing martial arts with was huffing and puffing while we were playing, and I noticed her mouth open the whole time. I, on the other hand, was breathing calmly through my nose. I suggested that she try closing her mouth the next round, and she did. She said it made a huge difference!  Tune in as we discuss: Why it is harmful to breathe through your mouthOne thing you can do at night to stop the cycle of over-breathingHow you can "test" yourself to see if you are over breathingAnd so much more!  Visit https://buteykoclinic.com/  to learn more!

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Patrick McKeown. World-renowned author and breathing practitioner Patrick McKeown was educated at Trinity College in Dublin, before completing his clinical training in the Buteyko Breathing Method at the Buteyko Clinic, Moscow, Russia. This training was accredited by Professor Konstantin Buteyko. From a young age, Patrick suffered from asthma and relied on an array of medicines and inhalers until he discovered the Buteyko Method at the age of 26, experiencing immediate relief from his symptoms. By applying the principals of the Buteyko Method, Patrick remains asthma-free since then, a feat that over 20 years of medication had failed to accomplish. In a career spanning 15 years, Patrick has since also become a bestselling author and expert on the topic of optimal breathing for improved health, wellbeing, and fitness. In this episode, Patrick talks about how crowded teeth can be a problem for breathing. Then, we discuss the main issues that can develop with chronic mouth breathers. Patrick dives into exactly how we should be breathing through our noses and the relaxation effect that will take place with proper inhales and exhales. Tune in as Patrick reveals why he highly recommends taping your mouth before bed. Plus, Patrick recommends the best resources to learn more about breathing exercises and guidelines. He started to practice slow breathing and light breathing. Through breathing, he was able to influence the temperature of his fingers. Learn more about Patrick by reading his book Atomic Focus: https://www.amazon.com/Atomic-Focus-Resilience-Breathing-Exercises-ebook/dp/B09D9ZL9HL/benazadi-20 [07:15] The Problem With Crowded Teeth and Breathing If the teeth are crowded, your jaw is too small. If your jaw is too small, there's not enough room for the tongue. So, the tongue is more likely to encroach the airway. When your airway is compromised, you may get disordered breathing during sleep. A palate expander is something that can be useful to improve breathing. [16:40] The Problems That Can Develop With Chronic Mouth Breathing Yawning excessively can be a clue to mouth breathing. Whenever Patrick works with a student, he tries to switch them from mouth breathing to nose breathing as much as possible. He also works on functional breathing patterns. Light breathing helps ensure the blood chemistry is normal. You're more likely to breathe light through your nose. By changing our breathing patterns, we can stimulate the vagus nerve. [21:55] Patrick Explains How You Should Breathe Through Your Nose Bring your attention to your breathing. Slow down your inhale, and have a slow, gentle exhalation. When you need to breathe in, take in a gentle inhalation. At the end of the inhalation, bring a feeling of relaxation to the body. When you do this correctly, you will feel air hunger. As you do this for two to three minutes, check the saliva in your mouth. Normally, it increases. When the human body undergoes stress, the mouth goes dry. While on the other hand, when we slow down our breathing, we should have more saliva in the mouth. [38:40] Why Patrick Recommends Mouth Tape Before Sleep Mouth tape can bring you so many benefits. 50% of people wake up with a dry mouth in the morning. Breathing through your mouth at night can wreak havoc on your dental health. Mouth breathing will cause more sleep disruptions. Breathing through the nose will make it so you don't have to wake up as much in the middle of the night. Welcome to Season 5 of Living Well with MS, the Overcoming MS podcast where we explore all topics relating to living well with multiple sclerosis (MS). And if you're new to Overcoming MS, visit our introductory page to find out more about how we support people with MS. Bio: Graham and Annette Henry are the founders of Henry and Henry, Plant-Based Nutrition Educators and Breathing Re-education Instructors. Their health challenges that led them to become experts Both British, they relocated to Germany in October 2020 and now live in Berlin. They have each resolved their own particular health challenges via a dietary approach. For Annette, this was initially endometriosis, and later on chronic fatigue. For Graham, it was obesity, high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol. Their training as whole food plant-based educators Becoming increasingly aware of the impact of diet on our health, Annette and Graham were motivated to learn more about a nutritional approach to managing and resolving chronic conditions, realizing that this would also have knock-on benefits for planetary health. As a result, they both trained as whole food plant-based educators and now apply their knowledge and passion to not only help others transition successfully to a more plant-based diet as a route to improved health but also as a means of contributing to a more conscious and compassionate world. Becoming certified breathing instructors Annette and Graham recognise that the journey of self-realisation and the key to resolving health issues doesn't always follow an obvious and linear route and that it requires continual revaluation and adaptation. Thus, when one of them self-diagnosed a breathing issue, realising that diet is only one piece of the puzzle, it prompted them to investigate the science of breathing and how the way we breathe can affect our physical and cognitive health. As a result of their findings, they have now become certified breathing instructors, helping clients to resolve and better manage a range of health conditions and to improve performance. Henry and Henry Annette and Graham run regular events, classes and workshops on whole food, plant-based nutrition and breathing. Further details can be found on their website at https://www.henryandhenryeu.com Key Takeaways: Prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics “Prebiotics are the fibres that we eat, that we can't actually do anything with, but our gut bacteria can. That's their food and that's what they thrive on. Probiotics are the healthy gut bugs that we have. So, the prebiotics are for the probiotics (our gut bugs). Then the postbiotics are the byproducts of that nutrition, that the bugs eat, [and] that release all sorts of wonderful chemicals in our body - short-chain fatty acids – which we now know, have so many health benefits. How to transition to a plant-based diet “I would say that taking smallest steps is better for most people, because they can handle that better. It may be a case of changing one meal, making sure your breakfast is plant-based every day or a different meal or whatever [meal you choose], and increasing it [and] looking at swaps.” Breathing for health “The Buteyko Breathing Method is really for dealing with health conditions. If you're breathing incorrectly, then somewhere in your health, things will not work quite as well as they could. It could be more obvious things such as asthma and anxiety. Sleep can be extremely impacted by [breathing incorrectly], as I'm finding out and it's just starting to get exciting because I am actually finally sleeping a little bit better. [There] are all sorts of other areas too, that you might not imagine, [for example] your posture is impacted by your breathing.” Related links:  Henry and Henry is an Affiliate Organization of Plant Based Health Professionals UK Salus Fatigue Foundation is a non-profit organization which inspires people affected by fatigue to live happy and healthy lives. Co-authors Lydia Hart and Stephen King are back on the podcast to talk about their recently published book, ‘Help! I've Got a Voice Problem'. A book which should belong on every singer and voice user's bookshelf as well as on display in the voice teacher's studio; so that everyone has the opportunity to understand how voice problems can occur.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Lydia and Stephen wrote this book for the reader, that's what's different about this book. They didn't want to write another book about voice, they wanted to write all the things that had never been written for all the people out there who are experiencing a voice problem, where those people will have lots of questions. From their work with the NHS and the Voice Care Centre Lydia and Stephen discovered that people with voice issues felt a real lack of empathy right from seeing their GP to diagnosis and if they're lucky a referral to a speech therapist. They're not seeing a doctor that has an understanding or sympathy for somebody that's a professional voice user. There's not just the issue with the voice itself that the book addresses, but also the emotions people may be feeling and the fears they have. In the medical or diagnostic world people have started to refer to the body as a machine and not as a living thing. We are not machines and when being treated should be thought of as what we are, people with emotions.   BEST MOMENTS ‘The book is dedicated to everyone without a voice' ‘When framing the journey of voice through a biopsychosocial perspective, all of those questions become clearer' ‘I'm fairly confident that the stuff that we have committed to paper has an almost universal truth about it'   EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: voicecarecentre.co.uk Social Media: @lydiahartvoice Relevant Links & Mentions: Stewart Harris: https://stewartharrisdesigns.myportfolio.com/ Sing Like Never Before by Justin Stoney with illustrations by Mark Pate: https://singlikeneverbefore.com/ VoiceWork: Art and Science in Changing Voices by Christina Shewell Lydia Flock: https://www.flockstars.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 32 The Bio-Psycho-Social Model with Stephen King: https://open.spotify.com/episode/4R13bvilWjwQnd9WOfTiVc?si=f2b9489b9e914317 Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 58 Understanding the Speaking Voice with Lydia Hart: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5q4JLR8tByssABbUeVNk7F?si=cc1553bd79f54f8c Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 88 What can be Learned from Teaching 100,000 lessons with Bob Marks: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5Nc7qa6VxhYALuamxwgKZB?si=a37c1d39d8a64a24 Help! 90 Day Detox Program: http://www.ketokampdetox.com Order Keto Flex: http://www.ketoflexbook.com -------------------------------------------------------- / / E P I S O D E   S P ON S O R S  PureForm Omega Plant Based Oils (Best Alternative to Fish Oil): http://www.purelifescience.com Use ben4 for $4.00 off. MYOTAPE will gently restore functional breathing for better sleep, better health, and better quality of life. You can learn more about MYOTAPE here: https://myotape.com/   [49:00] Resources To Check Out That Patrick Recommends   Patrick highly recommends reading his book, THE BREATHING CURE: Develop New Habits for a Healthier, Happier, and Longer Life. Patrick McKeown from the Buteyko Method to talk about all the benefits of deep breathing for anxiety and why breathing through your nose using the Buteyko Method is so important for your health. Breathing through your nose actually helps to produce nitric oxide in the body and it's amazing because when you breathe through your nose like we're anatomically designed, it increases oxygenation inside our blood and increases circulation. Nose breathing is also great for the teeth. When we mouth breathe all night in bed for example, we dry out our mouth by drooling. When your teeth do not have adequete saliva, there's no ability for the body to fight against bacteria growing on your teeth, hence cavities. If you let those cavities grow you might be influenced to get a root canal further damaging your health in the process. As we know from all the guests in our dental section, each tooth (accordin to Traditional Chinese Medicine aka TCM) reflexes through a complex set of meridian system to specific organs. Those organs also reflex back to that tooth. The dangers of mouth breathing are endless but also the benefits of nose breathing using the Buteyko Method are equally as beneftial for your health and well being. In this show with Patrick McKeown we get into the details and nuances of how breathing (taking in oxygen) impacts our cells, DNA, mitochondria and more. Who knew respiration would be so impactful to our longevity and health? Don't you think we should be taught how to breathe in school? It's so simple but yet so important and yet so overlooked even in the natural health community. I hope you enjoy this show with Patrick McKeown about the Buteyko Method and how breathing properly will help improve your health! Thanks for listening! Patrick originally gained his education at the trinity college in Dublin, before completing his clinical training in the Buteyko Breathing Method in Moscow. Patrick has written several best-sellers including The oxygen advantage, close your mouth, asthma free naturally - a book which he discusses how he cured his own asthma by following some of the breathing principles we discuss. I have to say, this episode absolutely blew my mind. I had never considered that we could have evolved to breather incorrectly until I came into contact with Patrick. In this episode, we discuss why breathing your nose is pivotal to great health. We discuss the damaging effects of mouth breathing, how do women and women’s breathing differ, how is breathing affecting anxiety and back pain, should we tape our mouths shut when we sleep, what causes fatigue, how to correctly breathe and so much more. I really can’t emphasise this enough - if you are knew to this subject, then prepare to have your mind blown. On today's episode, we discuss the Buteyko Method and how to optimize your sleep, overcome asthma, and support healthy breathing through nasal breathing and other breathwork techniques. Steven Todd, D.M.D. is one of the foremost authorities on treating snoring and sleep apnea. Upon retiring from oral rehabilitation and dental anesthesiology, Dr. Todd turned his focus to Dental Sleep Medicine (DSM) treating both adult and pediatric patients.. He realized CPAP therapy and Oral Appliance Therapy just treated the SYMPTOMS of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) – they did not treat the CAUSE of OSA. Then he discovered the Buteyko Breathing Method and knew this was the missing piece of the puzzle to treat patients with Sleep Apnea and Sleep Disordered Breathing. Dr. Todd, with the Buteyko Breathing Method, could now treat the CAUSE of OSA not just the SYMPTOMS. The results his patients have experienced with Buteyko Breathing have changed their lives! He is the only Certified Buteyko Breathing Method instructor in the Gulf Coast of Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi. Listen to learn: 1. Why it is harmful to breathe through your mouth 2. One thing you can do at night to stop the cycle of over-breathing 3. How you can "test" yourself to see if you are over breathing I have thought for many years that deep breathing through the belly was THE way to breathe. The science doesn't support this advice. Now, granted, breathing into your lower belly is much better than in your chest, Dr. Buteyko discovered that people breathe too often, taking in a larger volume of air than they actually need. What happens when we do that? Glad you asked :). When we breathe frequently and take in a large volume of air repetitively as most people do, whether they breathe into their chest (not so good) or their bellies (good), our carbon dioxide levels drop too low. When that happens, the oxygen we carry around in our hemoglobin doesn't detach from the molecule to feed our cells! Since reading Patrick's book, Close Your Mouth, I've told several huffing and puffing athletes to try closing their mouths as they exercise. Miraculously, they all said it made a big difference! In fact, one gal I was playing martial arts with (who was half my age) was huffing and puffing while we were playing and I noticed her mouth open the whole time.  I, on the other hand, was breathing calmly through my nose. I suggested to her that she should try closing her mouth the next round and she did. She said it made a huge difference! Lately I have been fascinated by the breath and various breathing techniques while running and sleeping. I have been experimenting a lot, inspired by Patrick McKeown, a breathing expert from Ireland. Having suffered with chronic asthma and nasal breathing difficulties for over 20 years, Patrick McKeown studied the Buteyko Breathing Method at the Buteyko Clinic, Moscow, Russia. As a breathing expert, Patrick has helped many people overcome similar issues to his own and has worked extensively with athletes. His latest book, The Oxygen Advantage, aims to improve sports performance by addressing dysfunctional breathing patterns and simulating high-altitude training. In today's conversation we take a deep dive into the effects of mouth and upper-chest breathing on the body and the benefits of nose-breathing in running and daily life. DISCLAIMER: Never do breath-holding if you are pregnant, if you have any serious medical conditions such as high blood-pressure, cardiovascular issues, kidney disease, cancer, etc. This episode is brought to you by PATH projects, my favorite running gear. These are the only running shorts, liners, shirts and hats that I wear. The gear ships worldwide and is only available at PATHprojects.com.

In this show you'll learn: 1. Why it is harmful to breathe through your mouth 2. One thing you can do at night to stop the cycle of overbreathing (it's cheap and easy) 3. How you can "test" yourself to see if you are overbreathing I have thought for many years that deep breathing through the belly was THE way to breathe.  Come to find out, the science doesn't support this advice. It's called the Bohr effect in science (yup, only vaguely remember that from high school chemistry, do you?). Since reading Patrick's book, Close Your Mouth https://amzn.to/2HZZRbO, I've told several huffing and puffing athletes to try closing their mouth as they exercise.

In almost every yoga class, the teacher will emphasize the importance of breath—but what does that really mean and why does it matter? If you ask, you'll likely hear that you're adding oxygen to your blood or improving your circulation. But is that true? It turns out that most yoga breathing actually reduces oxygen in the blood and increases CO2. To add to this paradox, more CO2 is actually a good thing and results in more oxygen to the cells. On this week's Yoga Talk Show, you'll learn how and why.  ------------ Listen & Learn: Why C02 is actually your friend How C02 relaxes muscle tissue (great for stretching) Why nose breathing encourages diaphragmatic breathing, increases NO2, and arterial oxygen uptake How reduced breathing increased saliva in the mouth, a sign of parasympathetic nervous system dominance and higher CO2 Why 30% of population has Rhinitis and how reduced breathing can help How reduced breathing impacts your spleen (yes, your spleen!)  ABOUT OUR GUEST Patrick completed his clinical training in the Buteyko Breathing Method at the Buteyko Clinic, Moscow, Russia, a training accredited by Professor Konstantin Buteyko himself.
