Are health coaches the future of healthcare?

We all recognize that American healthcare is a badly broken system. Wildly overpriced, exploitative, with a focus on pharmaceuticals and medical procedures to the exclusion of basic issues such as nutrition, the role of nutrients, and the microbiome. Can we expect doctors, healthcare executives, pharma or medical device executives to find better solutions? I highly doubt it. One of the problems plaguing conventional delivery of healthcare is that doctors lack the time, knowledge, and frankly the interest in spending more time with their patients, hearing about their issues, then creating solutions that address their unique concerns. Enter the age of health coaches. A number of years ago, when I first heard about this phenomenon, of heath coaches playing a role in the delivery of health, I was skeptical. But over the past decade, as I've worked with health coaches, witnessed what they could accomplish, and heard plenty of positive feedback from the public engaging their services, my opinions about health coaching has completely changed. I now see them as part of the engine that will drive improvements in healthcare. I therefore tracked down Sandra Scheinbaum, a Phd clinical psychologist who counseled patients for many years but then diverted her career into functional medicine and health coaching, bringing the unique insights into human behavior and emotions that came from decades of practicing clinical psychology, now applied to health coaching. Dr. Scheinbaum founded the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy that educates and trains people in acquiring the skills and knowledge to practice as a health coach. She is also author of several books including Functional Medicine Coaching: Stories from the Movement That's Transforming Healthcare, and her newest book, Your Health Coach Will See You Now available in April 2025 on Amazon and selected bookstores. In this episode of Defiant Health, Dr. Scheinbaum recounts how she made this change in direction and what she foresees for the future of this important phenomenon of health coaching. For more information:FunctionalMedicineCoaching.org___________________________________________________________________For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go Support the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

Health coaches provide invaluable support to midlife women navigating various physical and emotional challenges during menopause. Health coaches help manage the symptoms associated with this transitional phase, from hot flashes and sleep disturbances to weight gain and mood swings. The 5 pillars of health that health coaches focus on are nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep, and community. Many health coaches, like myself, educate women on all stages of menopause and help them understand what's going on in their bodies. We share current science-backed resources to learn from and help them feel empowered to talk to their providers about possible treatment options. We are pivotal in teaching effective stress management techniques, which can alleviate anxiety and mood fluctuations. We provide strategies to improve sleep hygiene, helping women combat insomnia and night sweats that often worsen with hormonal changes. We educate women about nutrition during midlife, navigating a new healthy way of eating to support body composition changes and goals. We help women find their motivation to move daily. Health coaches also fulfill an essential role in emotional support, helping women to articulate their feelings and navigate the psychological aspects of menopause. This support system is crucial for maintaining mental health and fostering a positive self-image during a period that many find challenging. Additionally, health coaches encourage goal setting and provide motivation, making them key partners in maintaining long-term health and preparing for a vibrant, healthy post-menopausal life. Through comprehensive and compassionate care, health coaches empower women to manage menopause confidently and easily, significantly enhancing their quality of life during this significant life stage. My very first episode, 3 years ago, began with someone I very much admire. She is an educator and clinical psychologist with a career spanning over 40 years, lecturing prolifically on the psychology of wellbeing, mind-body medicine, and the psychology of eating, and writing several books on health coaching, panic attacks, and anxiety. In our conversation today, we dive into nutrition confusion, scientific evolution, biased myths and beliefs, contradictory messages, and how cognitive dissonance affects people's eating patterns and attitudes toward food. Dr. Scheinbaum shares how she transitioned from being a vegan to becoming an omnivore, and we explore the role of Erikson's stages of development and family dynamics in shaping theories and behaviors around food. We look into the psychology of eating, social messaging, and the consequences of appetite judgments, food shame, and orthorexia. Dr. Scheinbaum also explains how to find local practitioners who can assist you in navigating your relationship with food, mind-body medicine, and cognitive-behavioral therapies. Stay tuned for today's insightful discussion, where Dr. Sandi Scheinbaum unravels the psychology that shapes our eating patterns, attitudes, and approaches to food.  IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Why is there so much confusion around nutrition? The psychology of food labeling How eating habits get shaped by childhood experiences and cultural influences How we need self-compassion without judgment to develop a healthier relationship with food The potentially negative impact strict food rules can have on the mental and physical health of children How social influences and the desire to fit in affect people's eating habits Dr. Scheinbaum tells her story of shifting from veganism to becoming a meat eater How gender differences impact eating habits The benefit of having a health coach to support lifestyle changes How thoughts and physical sensations are interconnected  Bio: Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum trains people to become Functional Medicine health coaches and helps practitioners and businesses hire them because she believes that health coaches are the key to combating chronic disease and reducing healthcare costs. In this episode, I chat with a new friend Elyse Wagner on functional medicine coaching and mindset!   What is her story and why? "I've been shaped by both the Standard American Diet and the Functional Medicine Lifestyle. When I was a kid, I endured taunts like "Obese Elyse" due to my weight. It was clear to me that I needed to begin with my diet. After consulting with a nutritionist, I made a complete 180 in my eating habits. In just two months, I shed 50 pounds, my skin cleared up, my hair started to flourish, and I had an epiphany: Food Is Medicine! This epiphany set me on my life's path and purpose. Armed with an undergraduate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, I came to realize that what I was learning in school didn't quite align with my values or personal journey. It always baffled me why, in this age of readily available information, we struggle to make necessary changes. As it turns out, food, nutrition, and eating are only a part of the puzzle when it comes to overall well-being. My journey continued as I pursued dual master's degrees in nutrition and clinical health psychology. Along the way, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, and it became apparent how challenging it can be to make meaningful health changes. However, I firmly believed that it shouldn't be this hard. I made a commitment to heal myself through nourishing whole foods and a positive mindset, with the intention of then helping others do the same. Fast forward 15 years, and I've played a pivotal role in creating the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy. Our one-year, online program equips health coaches to bridge the gap between healthcare providers and patients, empowering people to improve their health and well-being. My passion lies in empowering individuals to take charge of their health, nurturing a world where everyone becomes the CEO of their own well-being."   Instagram:  @functionalmedcoach and @elyse_wagner Linkedin:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/elyse-wagner-ms-cn-lmhca-80370419/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/functional-medicine-coaching-academy-inc-/ YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/c/FunctionalMedicineCoachingAcademy
