Prophecy Radio episode #95 asks which Rick Riordan Presents characters would make for the best team-ups before catching you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, like who Chalice of the Gods is dedicated to and what a few of our favorite campers are up to this summer. This week, we also tackle The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid chapter 18 and get a firsthand look at how formidable fruit bats can truly be. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:01:49) Did you see who Rick dedicated Chalice of the Gods to? If you're in a book burnout, short stories and novellas are a good place to get you back into the swing of it! We read through a couple of the blurbs from Read Riordan's Camp Half-Blood middle of summer check-in article. Will Solace has a special set of skills… The world is so weird, the existence of Camp Half-Blood is the least of our worries these days. What is Bob the Titan up to now? Can you willfully ignore Rachel's prophecies?? Best Rick Riordan Presents team-ups (00:13:45) We were inspired to do this episode based on Kristen's idea to pair Annabeth, Chela, and Belet together for an adventure. And let's not forget the chaos that would ensue between the Arrow of Dodona, Jack/the Sword of Summer, and Kasusu. There are plenty of characters who are into science and must face a mythological monster. Dead Brothers Club unite! There are two stories that deal in Korean mythology, and so we can't pass up that opportunity. Karen mentioned this before, but Sik and Samirah could end up being such a great duo. Would Samirah and Belet become best friends? Probably. We start thinking of monsters who would make great team-ups. Let's not forget about the parents!! Some of our listeners write in with their own pairings. The Red Pyramid discussion (00:49:18) This week, we're discussing The Red Pyramid chapter 18. It's a rainy day in Paris, but you know, it's still Paris. Being in Paris is actually the best place they ever could've ended up. We learn more about godlings and what happened in the museum and how the amulets work. Who is hosting Set!? This is the chapter with all the answers, finally, because we learn what happened to their mom. Time to break into Desjardins' house! Why couldn't Sadie turn back into a human? We learn a little bit more about Desjardins and how young he is…for a magician. It's time to go, but the fruit bats don't want them to leave. Where can they go to escape a second time? We can't wait for a Sadie chapter to learn more about her relationship with Isis. Feedback (01:18:17) Dr. Gina writes in to say how much she loved our interview with Sarwat Chadda! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 96, where we'll celebrate Percy Jackson's birthday before jumping into The Red Pyramid chapter 19! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Good morning, RVA! It’s 56 °F, and there’s a pretty good chance of rain throughout the entire day. Temperatures will stay right around 60 °F, though! You take the good, you take the bad…Water coolerLast night, five members of City Council voted against the Mayor’s downtown redevelopment plan aka NoBro aka Navy Hill—NO: Gray, Hilbert, Larson, Lynch, and Trammell; YES: Addison, Robertson, Newbille, and Jones. Technically, the Council voted against unstriking the handful of necessary ordinances that they struck at last week’s Organizational Development committee meeting, but, you get the gist. It was a long Council meeting, a historic night (I think), and I have a lot of thoughts. But, before diving in, Roberto Roldan at VPM has a recap that includes a nice timeline of the last couple dozen months. OK!First, whoa! I don’t think I ever, not even a single time, really expected this project to fail. It just seemed too big, have too much power and money behind it, and address too many of the City’s actual needs. I figured it’d tumble forward, like a big katamari clumping up supporters and amendments, until it ultimately splattered across the finish line. In Richmond, “I guess it’s either this or do nothing, and we already have nothing” has typically been a powerful argument. Turns out, not so anymore!Second, while the folks in charge made a bunch of missteps along the way that didn’t do themselves any favors, I don’t think we’d be where we are without the work of Richmond For All. It’s a very impressive thing to run a successful grassroots organizing campaign against a project supported by the City, developers, and one of the state’s most powerful people. I’m excited to see where next they decide to deploy their new-found power!Third, think what you want about this particular downtown project, the community benefits NoBro attempted to address are real issues facing, and still facing, the City—affordable housing, public transit, safe pedestrian and bike infrastructure, jobs, disinvestment in Black communities, school funding, environmental sustainability—not to mention a concrete wasteland north of Broad Street. None of those priorities need be tied to a downtown arena, and Council (plus the Mayor) can start to address those priorities this very budget cycle with progressive legislation and a thoughtful budget. As citizens, we can’t let Council kill this particular project and not also hold our elected legislators accountable for making real changes in the lives of Richmonders—it’s their job, they have the authority, they just need to write the legislation and approve the budget. On the Administration side of things, here’s the Mayor’s immediate response: “It saddens me that Richmonders won’t benefit from the housing, jobs and economic empowerment this project would bring — and I’m disappointed that council did not follow through on the process they laid out to review and evaluate this transformative project for our city — but I’m resolved to wake up tomorrow and keep working to move our city forward." More interesting, I think, is how he will respond in this year’s budget and how this process impacts his ability/motivation to get bold, progressive things done.Dang, y’all! What a night, and I am thankful that we can finally move on and start talking about literally anything else!Sarah Vogelsong at the Virginia Mercury continues to keep me up to date on the Virginia Clean Economy Act as it works its way through the General Assembly. Although, according to Vogelsong, a schism among Democrats may prevent the bill from passing. I’m dumb about state-level stuff, but good on the holdouts who recognize the impending climate emergency and want more out of the New Democratic Majority. Del. Samirah, who championed the middle density bills, puts it this way, “We’ve already missed our window for half-measures and small ideas.” Agreed.I’m kind of into this Virginia Local Government Exchange Program, modeled on the Sister Cities program, which the Governor announced last week. However, instead of focusing on “tourism, natural and cultural assets, and economic development strategies,” what if the program focused on housing, transportation, health, and sustainability? If we nail the latter set of things, the former should come a bit easier, right?Via /r/rva, check out this rad video of VCU, Monroe Park, and surrounding areas from 1977! Did they even have video back then?? I guess so!Reminder! Tonight, New Hampshire will hold their 2020 presidential primary. Next up: Nevada cacusues on the 22nd followed by the South Carolina primary on the 29th.This morning’s longreadSpreading Slow IdeasHere’s a great story about unlocking healthier outcomes for pregnant women and infants. But! It’s also a story, I think, about how to go about doing community engagement. Which, dang, is the perfect thing to read after last night’s City Council meeting. So what were the key differences? First, one combatted a visible and immediate problem (pain); the other combatted an invisible problem (germs) whose effects wouldn’t be manifest until well after the operation. Second, although both made life better for patients, only one made life better for doctors. Anesthesia changed surgery from a brutal, time-pressured assault on a shrieking patient to a quiet, considered procedure. Listerism, by contrast, required the operator to work in a shower of carbolic acid. Even low dilutions burned the surgeons’ hands. You can imagine why Lister’s crusade might have been a tough sell. This has been the pattern of many important but stalled ideas. They attack problems that are big but, to most people, invisible; and making them work can be tedious, if not outright painful. The global destruction wrought by a warming climate, the health damage from our over-sugared modern diet, the economic and social disaster of our trillion dollars in unpaid student debt—these things worsen imperceptibly every day. Meanwhile, the carbolic-acid remedies to them, all requiring individual sacrifice of one kind or another, struggle to get anywhere. If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.
Good morning, RVA! It’s 35 °F, and temperatures should make their way up into the mid 50s today. Late this evening you can expect rain which should continue into tomorrow morning. The rest of the weekend looks pretty great, through!Water coolerWell, it’s not entirely unexpected, but Del. Samirah’s middle housing bill died in subcommittee yesterday. Here’s a bit more from Ned Oliver at the Virginia Mercury. This doesn’t mean that we’re stuck with all the single-family zoning we’ve got in Virginia forever and ever amen. But it does mean that a lot of work needs to be done across the state to start building support for a bill like this. It is, of course, the right thing to do, but it’s a ton of work. Meanwhile, localities, like Richmond, can and should still peruse similar zoning changes locally. The Richmond 300process is wrapping up, and, if you look at the Future Land Use Map (PDF), you’ll see it recommends allowing duplexes and triplexes in a ton of neighborhoods—mostly the entire city before the final annexation of Chesterfield. It’ll be our job—folks who believe in and advocate for affordable housing, public transportation, and reaching our climate goals—to do the work locally to pass the actual zoning changes that will allow for middle housing. It’s going to be a whole thing, but I’m excited to get started.A while back I talked about housing choice vouchers and HB 6 which would prevent landlords from denying an applicant because they’ll pay their rent with a voucher. If that’s something you’d like to support, the Virginia Housing Alliance has put together an easy way for you to let your elected representatives down at the General Assembly know. I know Good Morning, RVA is typically very Richmond City focused, but affordable housing is definitely an issue the entire region needs to tackle. Take a look at this (depressing) map of affordable housing vs. life expectancy in the Regional Housing Framework. While the city proper hosts the majority of housing choice vouchers, there are still tons of folks using vouchers in Chesterfield and Henrico. We need more of that across the entire region! So, please, if you’re a county resident and in support of HB 6, let your electeds know!Gregory J. Gilligan at the Richmond Times-Dispatch says construction on a new 6-story, 53-unit apartment at 6th and E. Main Streets will start in a couple of months. This project is a perfect example of why NoBro’s 80-block BigTIF stresses me out. Development is happening downtown right now, and I’d love to see the City’s General Fund, not the proposed arena, suck up all of those sweet, sweet tax revenues. Not only that, but private developers like this one are building housing that’s price-competitive with the North of Broad project’s housing stock. Gilligan says rents in the new Main Street apartments will start at $1,146, while @_SmithNicholas_ reminds us that, for folks making 80% AMI, rents north of Broad will start at $1,180. I’m not out here arguing against building more (basically) market-rate housing downtown, but I do think it’s important to remember that the private sector is out here doing this thing right now, regardless of arena status.Huge congratulations to Nathan Burrell for getting an “unsolicited offer from Gov. Ralph Northam” to leave the City’s Parks & Rec department and serve as a deputy director with the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Colleen Curran at the RTD has the details. It’s certainly a loss locally, but he’s still a public servant and now he serves even more of the public. I think that’s great. It’s an exciting time for Parks, what with their recent master plan and hiring a new director, so whoever takes over for Burrell has a lot of momentum to work with.Neither here nor there, the sky during this morning’s sunrise looked amazing! I hope you were up to enjoy it.This morning’s patron longreadA Homeric Life: Neil Peart (1952–2020)Submitted by Patron Kevin. Neil Peart from Rush died! I had no idea, and I also have no idea what it is about Rush that makes people write like this. But I’m into it, and definitely into Moving Pictures. On September 12, 1952, Neil Ellwood Peart entered the world, appearing first in southeastern Canada, near the coast of Lake Ontario. If, on that day, the earth shuddered, or lightning struck, or a comet flared in the skies, or if some itinerant wisemen showed up at his birth, we no longer possess a record to support such a fact or facts. Yet, it might very well have happened. And, regardless, whatever is lacking in fact is fully alive in faith. On Tuesday, January 7, 2020, Neil Elwood Peart valiantly lost his three and half-year battle against brain cancer. On that same day, he entered Valhalla, escorted by at least one Valkyrie, but quite possibly by two or three. If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.
Good morning, RVA! It’s 22 °F, and today you can expect highs in the mid 40s and clouds in the sky. Temperatures could hit 50 °F tomorrow.Water coolerDown at the General Assembly, the Land Use Subcommittee of the Counties, Cities, and Towns Committee (which meets at 8:00 AM in “300-A Subcommittee Room” should anyone find themselves in a testifying mood) will hear Del. Samirah’s middle housing bill, HB 152. This bill would require localities to allow duplexes anywhere currently zoned for single family homes. If we’re serious about affordable housing, if we’re serious about public transportation, if we’re serious about combating climate change, we have got to come up with ways for more people to live closer together. Del. Samirah’s bill does exactly this, and it lines up nicely with Richmond 300’s vision for our neighborhoods. I’m very supportive!Locally, but still housing-related, Richmond Magazine’s Rodrigo Arriaza has an interview with Housing Opportunities Made Equal’s Heather Mullins Crislip. HOME and Crislip have been deeply involved in fair housing work in our region for a while now, and that includes our ongoing eviction crisis and the recently released regional affordable housing framework. The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Mark Robinson has a good recap and the tiniest bit of new news on the future of the Intermediate Terminal Building. The old’ ITB—which, I’m sure, is what people call it—was once the planned site for a Stone Bistro, then was slated for demolition, then Council got involved and, of course, everything ground to a halt. Robinson says that Richmond’s Economic Development Authority has hired an engineering firm to study the structural integrity of the building as a first step to figuring out what’s nexts with this City-owned property.Micheal Martz, also at the RTD, checks in on the State’s ongoing and admittedly boring budget process

Samirah Steinmeyer began her small batch pottery business, Seedling Clayworks, in 2012. She has a bachelors degree in fine arts and a masters degree in landscape architecture. Her mother, a ceramics teacher, taught Samirah the basics of wheel throwing and hand building. She has been learning new techniques, improving her skills through practice and developing designs ever since. Landscapes, especially public lands, are her primary source of inspiration.
