This time last year, the 1993 disappearance of Annie McCarrick, a young American woman living in Dublin, was upgraded to a murder inquiry.For three decades, it was believed the last definitive image captured of the American student came from the CCTV footage of her local AIB bank in Sandymount, Dublin on the day of her disappearance.However, the new Garda investigation has now determined that the CCTV image of McCarrick was, in fact, captured 11 days earlier.It's not the only aspect of the narrative about McCarrick's disappearance that has now been thrown into doubt. Journalist Áine Ryan, who has a personal connection to McCarrick, discusses the latest revelations surrounding the young American's disappearance and her family and friends' ongoing quest to find out what really happened in March 1993. Between 1993 and 1998 six Irish women, aged from 18 to 28 disappeared without a trace from the area which became known as 'The Vanishing Triangle.' These unsolved cases resulted in the creation in 1998 of the specialist Garda task force, Operation T.R.A.C.E. One of the women, 26-year-old Annie McCarrick from Long Island, New York had been living in the Sandymount area of Dublin but she vanished in March 1993. The last positive sighting of Annie was in the AIB Sandymount D4 on the morning of March 26th that year. Earlier this year, 30 years on, Annie's case was upgraded to a murder inquiry. Alan Bailey, a retired detective sergeant from Wexford, served as the National Coordinator for the taskforce for thirteen years. He speaks with Trina and Sarah about his involvement in the taskforce, developments in the case of Annie McCarrick and he talks about the valuable work he's doing now . Hosted on Acast. Ivan thought he knew everything there was to know about the iconic former RTE reporter Charlie Bird; but then the veteran broadcaster joined him this week's Thursday Interview. After living in Sandymount and Goatstown in his early life, he worked in some form of job from the age of 8 years old, ultimately making it to RTE where he was, among other things, a good between for the station and the IRA. Charlie Bird couldn't walk down a street in Ireland without being recognised for a time, such was his role in Irish public life. Listen to his own story in his own words as he sits down with Ivan.

This week on With Relish, we are focusing on the Irish Abroad who are doing some quality stuff with food overseas. We are delighted to be joined by two great guests who are working with food in very different ways, and get an insight into their story so far. First off, we are joined by the owner of South America’s first Irish Chipper. Susan Kennedy who originally hails from Sandymount in Dublin, spoke to Harry and Aoife about the struggles of setting up a business in Argentina, as well as the area's growing seafood appetite. Finally the guys welcomed a very special guest to the studio. Cuan Greene has established himself as one of Ireland’s leading young chefs in recent years. He and Harry studied together in DIT before starting up their successful Dublin Pop Up venture. Now still extremely close pals, this interview looks at their culinary experience together, Cuan's experience working as Chef De Partie for Noma as well as what it’s really like to holiday with Harry Colley in Mexico.

This episode discusses the controversial Poolbeg Incinerator, a massive municipal waste incinerator being built next to Dublin port. Residents of the nearby suburbs of Ringsend, Sandymount and Irishtown have been campaigning for 18 years against the construction on the basis of potential health and ecological effects, coming up against the undemocratic arrangement of Dublin City Council in regards to waste management. We talk to local activist John Whipple, Green Party councilor Claire Byrne and Mindy O'Brien, coordinator of environmental charity Voice Ireland. This aired on the 10th July 2015.

Clare Balding continues her series of wildlife walks with a visit to the Irish Coast. Today it's "Ramblings reunited", as she is joined again by Irish naturalist and broadcaster Eanna Ni Lamhna and her husband John Harding. Clare Balding last walked with her on a 'holiday hike' in the Wicklow mountains in September 2002. Today expert naturalist and broadcaster Eanna, takes her on a beautiful tour of the diverse wildlife havens of her home city, Dublin. They dig for lugworms and talk Ulysses in Sandymount strand. They discover the unlikely winter stopover of flocks of thousands of Brent geese - Fontenoy Football Club (the geese have a taste for the well mown turf!) On they walk to Ringsend Nature Reserve. In this a wonderful elevated wooded area, built on reclaimed builders rubble, they find a haven for linnets, goldfinches, blackbirds, wrens, curlews and egrets in the surrounded by wonderful views of the Dublin mountains and city spires. As they walk, they revisit their walk, conversations and friendship built in the rainy Wicklow Mountains ten years ago, and explore how much their lives, and their walks, have changed since Clare's last visit.
