The state of childbirth under a pandemic and uncertainty over reproductive health care

The pandemic posed new challenges for patients and providers during pregnancy and childbirth.  Pregnant people are at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19, especially if they are unvaccinated. More than two years after the start of the pandemic, health care professionals have protocols in place to address COVID transmission risks and to treat parents and newborns who have COVID. In Minnesota and across the U.S., though, there are historic health problems that have yet to be solved. Over the past couple of years, the pandemic has highlighted racial health disparities and large gaps in access to care. And there are new questions about legal rights to reproductive health care, which could complicate and worsen those gaps. Data from the Minnesota Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control, and the National Institutes of Health indicates that Black women are more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women, and to experience medical conditions like preeclampsia. Black women are more likely to experience preterm labor and birth, which can lead to medical complications for newborns. On Wednesday, MPR News host Angela Davis spoke with health care experts about how the pandemic has shaped pregnancy and childbirth. They also discussed new research in racial health disparities, how racism contributes to poorer health, and how anticipated restrictions in abortion care could affect reproductive health outcomes. Guests:  Rachel Hardeman, PhD, MPH is a tenured Associate Professor in the Division of Health Policy & Management at the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health, the Blue Cross Endowed Professor in Health and Racial Equity, and the Founding Director of the Center for Antiracism Research for Health Equity. Dr. Sarah Cross is an OBGYN and assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health at the University of Minnesota. She directs the Birthplace, Pregnancy Special Care Unit and the Newborn Family Care Center at M Health Fairview.

On this week's episode of The Rural Woman Podcast, you'll meet Sarah Cross. Sarah was born and raised in sunny SoCal and never imagined she would be living on a 36 acre, semi-off grid homestead in rural Indiana.  Sarah, along with her husband, have made a conscientious shift from a consumer-driven city to an intentional life in the country with a focus on homesteading and self-sufficiency.  Canning, gardening, raising chickens, sewing, cooking, training a livestock guardian pup, and beginning her own body care business are just some of Sarah's intentional-living pursuits. She manages all this while working full time.  Next steps include selling eggs, produce, and handcrafted soap at a local farmers' market and teaching others how to take first steps into homesteading through classes on her property.  While she holds a master's degree in Archaeology, it is her thirst for knowledge and tenacious spirit that make Sarah's story unique.   For full show notes including links in today's show, head on over to WildRoseFarmer.comhttps://wildrosefarmer.com/113 Get Patron-Only Extended Content & Bonus Episodes | Listen Here Support my work on Patreon | Learn More Patreon Executive Producer | Sarah R. | Happiness by The Acre Editing | Max Hofer | https://www.instagram.com/mixbaer_studio/ (MixBär Studio) Shop our Show Sponsors | Here Before You Buy The Mic | Podcast Coaching | Learn More Positively Farming Media | a hub for creators in the food & agriculture space | Learn More

Sarah Cross is an accomplished young woman. Not only does she run Code Beautiful, a beauty company that specialises in creating hero products, but she also runs another business at the same time as well as bringing up a young family. Accomplished. However, Code Beautiful is one of the most unusual brands I've encountered. Currently, it has three products in its portfolio and that's it. A mascara, lash treatment and a lip liner/colour/plumper in ONE colour. It's unheard of, but the way Sarah describes it makes perfect sense. In this podcast we explore how the brand was created, Sarah's values, who the brand works best for and what the future holds for Code Beautiful, so if you want a beauty exclusive listen up right here.
