Imagine building a brand from scratch, and running your business for fifteen years - only to be told by a global corporation that your name isn't yours to keep.  That's what happened to Rebecca Dowdeswell, founder of waxing business NKD, when she received a legal letter from cosmetics giant L'Oréal, opposing her application to renew her trademark. In this compelling conversation with Olly, Rebecca takes us inside her David vs. Goliath battle against one of the world's biggest corporations; a tale of perseverance, justice, and the high price of standing your ground. Support Rebecca's small business, and find out more about her story, here: https://nkdproducts.shop/pages/because-were-worth-it-too-loreal-vs-nkd Thanks to Private Eye for their help sourcing this story. _______ Meanwhile, in The Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart dives deep into his DNA, to discover whether companies like Color can detect predispositions to serious diseases.  After talking to journalist Molly Guinness, who was diagnosed with colon cancer at 38, Ollie investigates the growing trend for people proactively checking their health beyond the tests offered by the NHS, and - thanks to UK-based company Selph - discovers he has a hitherto undetected genetic condition, Lp(a). _______ Elsewhere, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox uncovers the truth about a kinky MRI incident that's taken the internet by storm, and advises a listener whose partner is not in-sync with his peccadillos. How can he balance a fulfilling monogamous relationship, while staying true to his most extreme desires? Might understanding the emotions behind his kinks lead to creative compromises? Or could attending a workshop, or even opening up his relationship, provide the right solution? With the help of Psychosexual and Relationship therapist Shae Harmon and Lola Phoenix's new book The Non-Monogamy Journal, Alix reveals all…  _______ Down in music corner, our record of the month is the brilliantly arresting ‘Angie's Wedding' from Manchester-based poet, writer and producer Antony Szmierek. His album, ‘Service Station At The End Of The Universe', comes out February 28th. _______ SUPPORT US: THANK YOU SO MUCH for your generous donations - independent shows like ours only exist with your support:

It's never too late to get in shape and reap the health benefits of physical fitness. In fact, increasing physical activity later in life results in the same risk reduction of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality as being active from adolescence through adulthood, the study's researchers said. So, while getting fit after 40 is about easing into specific exercises tailored for success, it's also about understanding your underlying motivation for doing so. The success factor is an ability to connect the dots between one's diet and exercise routines and their ambitions in life. At 40, Matt Selph decided to embark on a journey of weight loss, muscle gain, and beating back the chronic back pain that had plagued him since childhood. When he was a teenager, he was diagnosed with a lower spine deformity, which caused him to stop being active and playing football. He managed his pain with painkillers, but by the time he was in his 30s, he realized that it wasn't a long-term solution for him. By the time he married, he had put on a lot of weight. He has a sedentary job, which means he spends the majority of his time in the office sitting at his desk for around 9 hours a day. His weight went up to 217 pounds, and his back pain returned intensely. He realized that this wasn't helping. Matt's life was turned upside down when he witnessed his mother suffer from osteoporosis as a result of her advanced age. He was well aware that he needed to take charge of his life and his health in order to avoid ending up in the same situation. He then began working with me and received one-on-one instruction from me for the next several months. Assuming he would be hindered by his back condition, he was cautious. Resistance training, on the other hand, miraculously eliminated the long-term backache he had been experiencing in just 2 weeks! By concentrating on his correct food and nutrition, as well as his regular fitness routine, Matt shed an astonishing 50 pounds in just 72 weeks of program participation. At 194 pounds and with more muscles than ever, Matt looks and feels great while still being able to think clearly because he spends time outside and hiking with his family, among other things. Check out this episode with Matt Selph as he shares his incredible journey of how losing weight and getting fit can help you overcome chronic back pain even if you're already in your 40s, allowing you to be free of all anxiety about getting old age-related diseases. ---------------- Follow me on Instagram and feel free to DM about 1-1 online training @krisgethin Do you need elite sports supplements you can trust to help you achieve your goals in the gym and in life?  Click here https://bit.ly/kgkaged Use the code Healthkik for 15% off all supplements For my preferred Biohacking and anti-aging supplements, go to https://bit.ly/kgbiostacklabs For a range of organic CBD tinctures, bath bombs and muscle recovery creams that I use for sleep, anxiety, joint/muscle pain and relaxation, go to https://bit.ly/kgeliteprocbd You heard me talking about it throughout this episode, MASSZYMES: A safe and natural digestive enzyme supplement for men and women which contains essential enzymes for better digestion, less bloating and relief from constipation and gas. There are many things we have learned in the past couple of months. So the shared experience of COVID 19 has demanded that we all make some changes. We have adapted our businesses to do more curbside pick-ups and to-go sales than normal. We have set up kits for our guests to enjoy our cocktails at home. Some business owners have had to make difficult sacrifices. Chris Williams of Lucille’s has taken profitability out of the equation just so he can keep his doors open, but also keep his employees fed and paid. Michael Neff of Cottonmouth Club has explicitly gone on record with the national media by saying that if saving lives means him losing his business, then so be it. He has also pointed out that losing a quarter or more of the bars in any city will have long-lasting consequences on the culture and vibrancy of the city.In Houston in particular, the former mayor invested millions of dollars in revitalizing downtown by focusing in the historic area around Market Square and Main St. It just so happens to be around the time when the craft cocktail revival was at its peak.I can tell you, as someone who participated in the education and promotion of a unified industry working to raise the level of craftsmanship in bartending, there was a lot of learning and collaborating. There was some travel to conventions and educational opportunities, and of course, there was a bit of drinking involved… just for the sake of learning…That said… when you have bars today that ignore the city’s, county’s or state’s requirements to social distance tables or customers, to have staff wear N95 masks for their safety and the guests… when bars close voluntarily, but then the state mandate is that ALL bars must close…. Having a NIGHTCLUB turned lounge/event venue pack their space a day after the state order comes in, is at the very least a big middle finger to anyone who has given a shit about getting out of this situation sooner rather than later. For that club to then post a picture of the BLM protest and claim that the club’s actions are not as bad as the protest, is an insult to the all of those people at the protest that also patronized and spent money at Cle or Spire and contributed to their success, but were also part of a protest for SOCIAL JUSTICE.
