In this week's episode of The Korea Pro Podcast, Jeongmin is on vacation, so John is joined by news trainees Joon Ha Park and Lina Park. The trio discusses the aftermath of President Yoon Suk-yeol's senior staff resignations following the ruling People Power Party's defeat in the previous week's general elections. The team examines potential candidates for the prime minister and chief of staff positions. They also delve into Yoon's meeting with Daegu City Mayor Hong Joon-pyo and the president's remark about being open to meeting with Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, a significant development given Yoon's lack of engagement with Lee since his inauguration. The episode also covers the controversy surrounding the Sewol documentary, which was originally planned to air on KBS on April 18 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the ferry sinking. The team discusses KBS' decision to postpone the documentary's air date to June, citing concerns about influencing the general elections and their desire to reframe the documentary to focus on PTSD in general rather than solely on the Sewol tragedy. About the podcast: The Korea Pro Podcast is a weekly 15-minute conversation hosted by Editorial Director Jeongmin Kim (@jeongminnkim) and Editor John Lee (@koreanforeigner), diving deep into the most pressing stories shaping South Korea — and dissecting the most complicated ones for professionals monitoring ROK politics, diplomacy, culture, society and technology. Uploaded every Friday. This episode was recorded on April 18, 2024. Audio edited by Joe Smith

In episode 44, which was recorded a few days ago and just before leaving for South Korea, Jay not only elaborates on his 'sudden Spring' over to South Korea and it being the 10th visit to Korea in 12 years, but also speaks about why he chose to do this. You'll hear how Jay, having only left Korea in Winter [2023] & now revisiting less than 4 months later in Spring [2024, intends to spend his next few weeks - or maybe a couple of months - in Korea. Not only are there details of various places on Jay's list, like Cheongju, Seoul, Busan, Jeongju and Jeju Island but also reasons for choosing those places and how some of these opportunites arose. On top of that, you'll also find out about film festivals, Korean film as well as regarding Korean culture in other countries - these include Korean-related events & topics from the nearby countries of Thailand and Vietnam!Lastly, but something which plays a large part in this 10th trip of Jay's to Korea, is the subject of the 10th anniversary of the Sewol ferry tragedy.[NOTE: As always, a version of this episode will also be available over on our fairly recently created @notsokoreanpodcast YouTube channel - please feel free to subscribe to that!]FURTHER INFODetails about subjects covered or touched on in this episode and recent ones can be found below.Sewol:https://rememberingsewoluk.wordpress.comhttps://www.facebook.com/RememberingSewolUKhttps://www.instagram.com/sewol_uk/Ana Bondarenko:https://naughtymusestudios.com/https://www.facebook.com/NMuseStudioshttp://instagram.com/naughty.muse.studiosJason Verney's "Reparation":http://www.Instagram.com/Reparation_Film (@Reparation_Film)https://www.imdb.com/name/nm6732314/https://youtu.be/UHr9fpvr7M4 (TRAILER)https://youtu.be/QOEy-VMs7nsMBF Podcast:https://linktr.ee/microbudgetfilmmakersAnnie Ko Interview (Dog-meat & Music):https://youtu.be/8ZITk2GEEFk?feature=shared (Video version)Related:https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2021/06/18/south-korea-annie-and-deejay-a-great-dog-meat-farm-rescue-story-also-support-hsi-to-stop-yulin/Love X Stereo:https://linktr.ee/lovexstereo[JASON and TIMOTHY's podcast episodes can ALSO be found in this PLAYLIST: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLi-ZZE-1zF1M50lsEie0d_oqMm2Tq3i-J] #SEWOLt #Busan #JeonjuThe bulk of this episode was recorded by Jason Verney on April 2nd 2024 and whilst in Bangkok. Introducing Kim Tong-in's short story [Boat Song], we talk about the 10th anniversary of the Sewol ferry sinking. Translated by Grace Jung
In this half-festive and Easter episode (and our 43rd one!), Jay announces an almost spontaneous trip to South Korea, which will be his 10th visit to Korea in 12 years!Yes... In this shorter episode, you'll hear from Jay about this upcoming journey - even though it was only in December when he last left Korea - and it touches on the kindness of others, the 10 year Sewol ferry anniversary, an forthcoming interview and more. In episode 39 of the 'NoSoKoPo', Jay speaks from Jeju Island in South Korea about various topics and these include the 'cheating the start of Winter' (by heading further South!), a week-long temple stay, 'Korean snow', an almost all-encompassing Jeju Rainbow, plus a first time crossing to Jeju by ferry... and Jay touches on those inevitable thoughts of the Sewol ferry (세월호) incident evoked by that trip.
The April 2014 Sewol ferry disaster is an all too familiar South Korean tragedy. Corruption, deceit, greed, and failed regulations and oversight cost nearly three hundred lives—most of whom were high school students on a trip to Jeju Island, a popular resort destination. Seoul National University Professor HaeRan Shin explains how the Sewol ferry disaster has become a site of remembering and forgetting. She reveals how economic interests worked against efforts to memorialize the tragedy. Lastly, she notes how opponents tried to discredit the memorialization project by associating it with memory activists from Gwangju and the May 18th Gwangju massacre.
November 8, 2023 - At the height of the military dictatorship in South Korea, Insuk and Sungho are arranged to be married. The couple soon moves to San Jose, California, with an infant and Sungho's overbearing mother-in-law. Adrift in a new country, Insuk grieves the loss of her past and her divided homeland, finding herself drawn into an illicit relationship that sets into motion a dramatic saga and echoes for generations to come. Extraordinarily beautiful and deeply moving, The Liberators by E. J. Koh is an elegantly wrought family saga of memory, trauma, and empathy, and a stunning testament to the consequences and fortunes of inheritance. From the Gwangju Massacre to the 1988 Olympics, flashbacks to Korean repatriation after Japanese surrender, and the Sewol ferry accident, Koh's exquisitely drawn portraits and symphonic testimony from guards, prisoners, perpetrators, and liberators spans continents and four generations of two Korean families forever changed by fateful past decisions made in love and war. In this conversation with Anton Hur, E. J. Koh discusses her debut novel. In episode 36 of the 'NoSoKoPo', Jay introduces details of the shows's upcoming special guest, James Turnbull, author/founder of The Grand Narrative (https://thegrandnarrative.com) and does so by recording a 'live in Saigon' segment, just before his flight to South Korea, where he intends to spend a few months. You'll not only hear a tiny piece of this interview with James Turnbull at the start but even a little more at the end of the epsiode.Once again, Jay touches on the Korean influence in Vietnam, speaks a little about Chuseok (and the Asian mid Autumn festival in general), the Busan International Film Festival 2023 (BIFF) and the upcoming and 18th London Korean Film Festival (LKFF - more details over at MiniMiniMovie.com) and the soon-to-be-10th anniversary of the tragic Sewol ferry (세월호) incident.A moment is also taken to explain the direction Jay - and hopefully Tim too - will take this Not So Korean Podcast in the future. Yes... A lot is covered in this special episode but perhaps the big question is... Will Jay, on this 9th time in South Korea stay to experience his first cold December there? Welcome to the 3rd episode [no. 28] of Series 2 of the 'NoSoKoPo' and in this show we hear from Jay when he was in South Korea & in particular about his slightly restricted arrival in Incheon International Airport to his then arriving, a few hours later at his 'close to Ikseon-dong*' accomodation and therefore in the Jongno area of Seoul.Jay's somewhat "long, winding" journey - and 'long-winded' story to match - touches on everything from getting hold of a sim-card, transportation options, passing through immigration, luggage issues, money, masks and a whole lot more. It's worth pointing out that certain requirements or restrictions relating to travelling to South Korea will have changed since this was recorded (which was in the latter part of 2022) but much of what Jay has to say can still be applicable.*This was almost unbeknown to Jay [his precise proximity to the that hanok-ridden area (aka Ikseondong Hanok Village / 익선동 한옥거리)] and this was perhaps Jason's first experience of such Ikseon-dong streets. You may hear more about this in a future Not So Korean Podcast show -and perhaps as a kind of 'Part 2' of to this episode - if only to hear Jay's realisation of his very close proximity to Changdeokgung Palace (창덕궁) and Changgyeonggung Palace (창경궁)!FURTHER INFO:Details about subjects covered or touched on in this episode and recent ones can be found below.Sewol:https://rememberingsewoluk.wordpress.comhttps://www.facebook.com/RememberingSewolUKhttps://www.instagram.com/sewol_uk/Jason Verney's "Reparation:http://www.Instagram.com/Reparation_Film (@Reparation_Film)https://www.imdb.com/name/nm6732314/https://youtu.be/UHr9fpvr7M4 (TRAILER)https://youtu.be/QOEy-VMs7ns"Retired, Working For You"https://www.youtube.com/@RetiredWorkingForYouhttps://retiredworkingforyou.com[JASON and TIMOTHY's podcast episodes can ALSO be found in this PLAYLIST: https://youtube.com/playlist?l...]#NewMalden#KoreaTownThe main 'on location' segment/s of this episode were recording on 19th August 2022 in Seoul, South Korea. The music featured in this show is by the wonderful Kaya:http://www.kaya-music.co.ukSHOW INFO:The Not So Korean Podcast with Jay & Tim is recorded live from New Malden, the UK and Europe's largest Koreatown. Welcome to the second episode [no. 27] of Series 2 of the 'NoSoKoPo' and in this show, we let you hear Jay and Tim's 'farewell chat', recorded just before Jason/Jay left for his few months in South Korea. The chat consisted of discussion about what or where the previous 12 months (& more than 25 epsiodes) had taken Jay and Tim and their lives in New Malden (aka KoreaTown UK), as well as vague plans whilst being apart and also what you lovely "Not So Korean Podcast" listeners may have to look forward to in future episodes.Tim & Jay also hint at future plans regarding a standalone YouTube channel and website [if you've heard epsiode 26 you'll know about these now - full details below too!] and Jason presented Timothy with a very apt gift, one which consisted of elements relating to 3 countries Tim has an interest in: Primarily though, South Korea and his native Canada, but also Thailand.[A huge thank you must go out to the collective behind - & friends of - the YouTubechannel, “Retired Working For You”, especially Allan and Khun It…] It was a poignant and rather touching time, and just after Tim & Jay had set-off on their last [2022] bicyle ride together.

Hello from Jay's trick-or-treating route! This week, Jay listened to hours of affirmative-action arguments from the Supreme Court so that you (and we) didn't have to. He recounts Ketanji Brown Jackson's sharp line of questioning and lays out the progressives' Catch-22. Does a third path reveal itself if we deny Harvard and its peers their institutional, “meritocratic” power? Is it true that Asian Americans are actually given a leg up in some academic environments? Next, we hear from Tammy, in Korea, following the horrific crowd crush that killed more than 150 people in Seoul's Itaewon neighborhood over Halloween weekend. We discuss the role of government negligence and the rage and grief reminiscent of the Sewol ferry disaster. Tammy explains what makes Itaewon such a special neighborhood, especially for young people and minorities in Seoul. What will it represent going forward? Finally, we honor the great people's historian Mike Davis, who died on October 25. We revisit his classic, “Fortress L.A.,” which appears as Chapter 4 in City of Quartz (currently available as a free Ebook from Verso or, if you prefer to listen, as an audiobook through your local library on Libby.) We also discuss his more recent pieces on foreign policy and organizing, and the huge gap that he and the late Barbara Ehrenreich leave behind. We'll continue to learn from Mike and follow his advice to take to the streets. Korea24 – 2022.11.01 (Tuesday) News Briefing: The head of South Korea's National Police Agency acknowledged insufficiencies in the police response to emergency calls received prior to the deadly Itaewon crowd crush. The interior and Safety Minister Lee Sang-min also apologized to the public for failing to prevent the tragedy. (Kim In-kyung) In-Depth News Analysis 1: The nation is still reeling from the tragedy that struck Halloween festivities in the Itaewon district of Seoul on Saturday night. Concerns are growing over the impact it is having not only the victim’s families, survivors and witnesses, but also the general public. Of particular concern are those in their 20’s, who also lived through another incident of collective trauma, the 2014 Sewol ferry accident. To discuss the impact this could be having Professor Gilad Hirschberger, from the Baruch Ivcher School of Psychology at Reichman University in Israel joining us on the line. In-Depth News Analysis 2: A liquidity crunch has rattled the South Korean bond market after the governor of Gangwon Province declared last month not to renew its credit guarantee for Legoland Korea. Although the province has backtracked on the decision, and has promised to pay the overdue debt a month earlier than initially planned, investors in the corporate bond and commercial paper markets remain rattled. To discuss the situation and assess the government’s measures, Daniel Yoo, Head of Global Asset Allocation at Yuanta Securities, and Professor Park Sang-in from Seoul National University’s Graduate School of Public Administration join us on the line. Korea Trending with Walter Lee: 1. Police have set up a lost-and-found center after 1.5 tons of items, such as bags, clothes, and shoes, were recovered from the crowd crush incident in Itaewon. A story has emerged of a couple spending four hours to help transport a complete stranger injured in the Itaewon crowd crush to hospital. It's the history part of our Train to Busan episode with Nicole Adsit and Christina Song. We follow the clues all the way to the political climate in Korea when Train to Busan was coming out. President Park Guen-hye's administration from 2013-2017 was riddled with scandals, corruption and incompetence, which helped inspired a whole wave of political thrillers in Korea and at least one zombie movie.Just as a heads up, we do talk about the Sewol ferry disaster, which is a genuinely heartbreaking tragedy, but we bounce back by covering how Park's closest advisor was the daughter of a cult leader who used her connections to Park to force companies to donate to her charities, which she was embezzling from. Man, there was a lot happening during Park's presidency. At least we know she'll be in jail for a long, long time- wait, what? She was pardoned "in the interest of national harmony" in December 2021 after we recorded the episode?? And I just learned this now when I googled what her release date was to make a joke about it??? It doesn't seem like her advisor Choi Soon-sil was pardoned- will someone please think of her equestrian daughter! You can follow us:On Instagram (@nofuturenyc)On Twitter (@nofuturenyc)On Letterboxd (@nofuturenyc)Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com
