Kyle Starks has become a standout voice in independent comics, known for his distinctive comedic storytelling and energetic art style that blends humor with action-packed narratives. His breakthrough came with the critically acclaimed Sexcastle, a graphic novel that reimagined 1980s action movie tropes with a hilarious and subversive twist. Starks has since become a prolific creator, working on titles like Rock Candy Mountain, The Six Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton, and I Hate This Place, each showcasing his unique ability to blend comedy, action, and emotion. He may be best known for his 48-issue run on Rick and Morty for Oni Press, but new projects are rolling out all the time, including a spin-off of Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum's comic Minor Threats called From the World of Minor Threats: Barfly with artist Ryan Browne. You can follow Kyle on Instagram @thekylestarks, check out his website kylestarks.com, or connect with him on Bluesky @thekylestarks.bsky.social for updates on his latest projects and artistic adventures.____________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Another great interview lined up for you folks today, because Greg got the opportunity to sit down with the 6 Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton team of writer Kyle Starks and artist Chris Schweizer. They are both Eisner-nominated cartoonists in their own right, and have individually brought you such works as Sexcastle and Old Head in Kyle's case, and The Crogan Adventures and The Roanoke Colony: America's First Mystery in Chris's. But these virtual studiomates have also started combining their talents on books like Rock Candy Mountain and Mars Attacks, and Trigger Keaton, now out in trade paperback from Image Comics, continues that trend. Greg talks to them about their particular working dynamic over several projects, how COVID has changed the importance and avenues of social media and creator outreach, selling motion in a static medium, balancing comedy and drama without shortchanging either, which Keaton TV show would make the jump to the real world if they had their way, Kyle's upcoming Fuck This Place ongoing series (starting May 18), just what the hell a ‘tiger truck' is, and much more! ECCC 2019: In Conversation with Erica Henderson and Kyle Starks (Emerald City Comic Con, March 2019) ReedPOP's Emerald City Comic Con once again takes over the immense WA State Convention Center in Seattle, attracting tens of thousands of comic book and pop culture fans from across the globe, by showcasing some of the best creative talents there is to offer - our man on the ground, Dan Berry, has been very lucky to be invited along as Press, meaning hes got the chance to speak one-on-one with members of this outstanding creative melting pot. Erica Henderson and Kyle Starks are two of the most critically acclaimed and popular creatives in comics today, with massive hits like THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL, JUGHEAD and SEXCASTLE garnering them awards and fans across the board. And more recently, the pair have been knocking it out of the park with two excellent - and wildly tonally differing - books, ROCK CANDY MOUNTAIN and ASSASSIN NATION (Image Comics/Skybound). ASSASSIN NATION has been a massive success from its very first issue and Henderson and Starks talk to Dan about the evolution of the book, as well as the working relationship and friendship which fed into the issues. Thanks to Erica and Kyle for taking time out of their busy con, and to Dan for bringing the interview to us...

This week’s guest is Kyle Starks, the writer of Dead of Winter from Oni Press. This is a zombie comic based on the popular table-top games of the same name and it is loads of fun. Issue #3 is set for release on October 18th. In addition to Dead of Winter, Kyle has some other non-horror books that he writes and illustrates including Sexcastle, Rock Candy Mountain, and Kill Them All, which was just released by Oni Press this week. In the second of two on-location interview episodes recorded at last weekend's HeroesCon -- the first episode went up yesterday -- Derek talks with a variety of artists tabling in Artists Alley. He begins with a conversation with Nate Simpson, discussing the recent release of Nonplayer #2, the long gap between the first and second issues, and Nate's plans for carrying the title forward. Next, Derek talks with Ed Piskor about the upcoming release of Hip Hop Family Tree, Book 3, Fantagraphics' landmark decision to release his title as a monthly series, and Ed's gold watch. After that, he discusses the webcomic Vattu with Evan Dahm, along with the artist's plans for eventually releasing the entire saga in hardcopy. Then Derek heads to the shared table of Gabriel Dunston and Aaron Walther -- which is almost next to The Comics Alternative's table! He talks with Gabe about Kickstarter and his work on the second Purgatory Pub book, and then he learns about Aaron's series, Zero's Heroes and Science Hero. Then, in one of the highlights of the con, Derek makes Ryan Browne laugh before learning the sad news that God Hates Astronauts will soon be going on hiatus. Following Ryan's talk, Jamal Igle discusses the new Molly Danger series as well as his work at Action Lab Studios, and then Frank Barbiere shares some word about the secrets to his prolific output...Five Ghosts, White Suits, Black Market, and Solar: Man of Action, anyone? Then, in the last hours of this year's HeroesCon, Derek is able to talk with Kyle Starks about his experiences after Sexcastle, with Jeremy Whitley about Princeless and ethnoracial issues in comics, and with Matthew Roberts about art and the success of Manifest Destiny.

On this interview show, Andy and Derek are happy to talk with Kyle Starks, the man behind the new book from Image, Sexcastle. The guys speak with Kyle about the book's origins as a successful Kickstarter campaign last year, how it captured the attention of the folks at Image Comics -- thanks to Matt Fraction -- and the vast support the book has been receiving from the creative community. Sexcastle is an homage to 1980s action movies complete with no-holds-barred fighting, monster trucks, egomaniacal villains, explosions, assassins, nunchucks, as well as a fair share of animals thrown in for good measure (such as a polar bear, a pooping peacock, and an evil cat). It is also the story of redemption, as the narrative's protagonist, Shane Sexcastle, attempts to leave behind his past life as a master assassin and find peace as humble florist. The Two Guys also talk with Kyle about his previous Kickstarter campaign, Legend of Ricky Thunder, as well as some of other earlier projects, including Punch Captain, Adventure Wizard, and Butts (all of which you can find through his website, KyleStarks.com). Along the way Kyle also shares his love of HeroesCon, the joys of Mert's soul food, and his distaste for commentary tracks on DVDs and Blu-ray. It's a fun interview, filled with thrilling talk that rivals the action found in Sexcastle.
