James Martin developed his skills in illustration, became a self-described “bad” teacher, and then a less-than-dedicated tattoo apprentice. Eventually, he worked in design agencies where he honed his craft and gained experience to build his own brand and business. Shout-out to my former podcast guest and good friend Michael Janda who introduced James and I over Instagram! We talk about: Our common beginnings as educators and how he quickly figured out that it wasn't the right time to put his passion for teaching into practice Learning by doing and failing and then being able to apply that as you move forward Why he's not afraid to fail and instead has always been a big fan of trying things out so he never has any regrets or what-ifs What the tattoo industry is like and his experiences as a tattoo apprentice Working for an agency called Irish Media and how he was introduced to the design world The problem with creatives today who think that there's a shortcut to creative freedom His advice for creatives to gain experience working with an agency in order to learn how to market, price, and pitch to clients Why he's grateful that he grew up as a creative without social media The beginnings of BabyGiant Design Co. and how grit, determination, and the right timing played into its success Introducing his brand on social media and the content marketing best practices he lives by Humanizing his brand through the way he shows up on social media How he separates his YouTube marketing from Instagram and what he means when he says every single thing he does follows a plan he designed Building a career collateral of trust and how he stays true to his brand ethos by only promoting tools and products he genuinely believes in Being a one-man content marketing team How he developed his email list and what his newsletter looked like at the start His Rapid Fire 10 answers including a secret talent that surprises people Why he lives his life by the mantra “Effort is free” Mentioned in this episode:Show Your Work by Austin Kleon: https://www.amazon.com/Show-Your-Work-Austin-Kleon/dp/076117897X For more of James' work, head on over to his channels:Book: https://www.amazon.com/Made-James-Honest-Creativity-Design/dp/0760371490Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/made.by.james/?hl=en Newsletter: https://themadebyjames.com/the-logo-designers-black-book Website: https://themadebyjames.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/madebyjames Thanks for listening! In any solo episode, I love to be transparent in sharing the behind-the-scenes processes in the entrepreneurial journey. On social media, we see highlights and the finished product, but we rarely see the struggle and obstacles in getting there. Today's focus is on confronting and overcoming fear as I go through the process of building a new product. My hope is that this episode will give you encouragement and inspiration to keep going in whatever new endeavors you undertake. You'll Learn ● Three ways to combat the voices of doubt and fear: ○ Work on showing the imperfect side of building something vs. just the finished product ■ Learning and growing “in the open” helps others learn from both your failures and successes. (From Show Your Work, see Resources) ■ Bringing what you fear will be judged by others can help dissipate the fear and bring encouragement and support. ○ Realize that the first version of anything will not be the final version. ■ Putting out beta versions during the development process reduces the pressure to “get it perfect.” ■ Getting feedback on beta versions is not an indictment of my expertise. (Use Survey Monkey, see Resources) ○ Create an emotional and brainstorming safety net. ■ Using layers of family, friends, and colleagues will create a support circle for you. ■ Getting emotional, practical, and technical support will vary according to the stages in which you find yourself. Show Your Work - by Austin Kleon '10 ways to share your creativity and get discovered' After the runaway success of 'Steal Like an Artist', Kleon was always asked the same questions: how do I actually get my stuff out there? how do i get found? how do i get an audience for my work? This book begins to answer some of those questions. It stresses the importance of maintain the mindset of an 'amateur', thinking about the process (not just the products), telling good stories, and building a regular process of 'sharing' into your creativity routine. This week Ben & I discuss the power of just starting, even if it's messy, even if it "fails", just starting is powerful! We sometimes get paralyzed in preparation, trying to make it perfect, but miss out on all we learn from taking the risk, being vulnerable and putting yourself out there. This is an important and core topic for creatives of all disciplines and we're excited to hopefully shed some light on this fascinating subject! There's a difference between an entrance criteria and an excellence criteria. If you don't deal with the under-performers in the room, you'll lose the room. Why would anyone want to be led by you? Joining me today is Adam Quiney. Adam is an obsessive perfectionist, a high-performer, a former lawyer, and a current life coach. After four years of self-discovery and coaching, he has learned that he has a pretty big heart. He always resisted this fact, because having a big heart means you can get hurt. Instead he learned to filter everything through his brain, perform to receive love, and created a career out of doing so. Here are some other interesting facts about Adam: before coaching and law, he was a software developer and project manager; he used to teach popping and locking (and have trained with the founders of both dance styles); he has a boston terrier named Grimby that he loves more than life itself; he can’t watch cheesy movies without crying; and even after all of the work he’s done, he still struggles to let go of his constant nature to strive. Key Points From Today’s Episode: Adam tells us how he got started on his journey to coaching, marking a big turning point in his life. We talk about finding a niche in your business (Adam brakes down the way he has found his) and growing a service based business by good word of mouth (by invitation and referral only). Discover the book Adam thinks every man must read. Find out why the advice that Adam would give his 20 year-old self is the same advice he would give his 38 year-old self. Adam shares the projects that currently excite him! And so much more!
