AI Job Loss Is Real. The Catastrophe Is Optional (with Kathryn Edwards)

AI doomsdayers want us to believe mass job loss would be unprecedented. But Kathryn Anne Edwards has a sharp reminder: In the first five weeks of the pandemic, the U.S. economy shed 22.5 million jobs—larger than any single AI job-loss estimate she has seen. The difference was policy. Unemployment support, direct cash to families, and a strong public response helped workers survive the shock and helped the labor market recover. This week, Nick and Paul talk with Edwards about what the pandemic recovery can teach us about AI, automation, unemployment, and the future of work. Why do AI debates so often treat workers as passive victims and government as irrelevant? What would a serious policy response to technological disruption look like? And why should we be skeptical of billionaires and tech leaders who insist that this time, unlike every other economic transition, they are uniquely important and special? Kathryn Anne Edwards is a labor economist, independent policy consultant, Bloomberg Opinion columnist, economics influencer, and co-host of the Optimist Economy podcast.  Social Media: Instagram Threads TikTok  Bluesky  Twitter Further reading:  Optimist Economy Podcast Bloomberg Opinion - AI Can Lead to a Fix of This Broken Government Program Bloomberg Opinion - Is AI Coming for Your Job? In this episode of Merryn Talks Money, Merryn Somerset Webb speaks to Tom Slater, manager of Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust and partner at Baillie Gifford about his provocative paper, “AI Isn’t Coming for Your Job. It’s Coming for Your Mind,” and why the real risk may be a world that looks more productive while quietly losing the judgement, learning and expertise that make progress possible. Most of us have gotten up on a Monday morning and thought: I simply cannot do this today. Our job is grinding us down in that slow, invisible way that work does when we're not managing it well. Psychotherapist, author, and podcast host Guy Winch has spent his career sitting with people who have experienced this for a passel of reasons from sabotaging coworkers to unrealistic goals. His new book Mind Over Grind is a practical, science-backed guide to surviving your job—even when it really, truly sucks. In this episode, Caitlin and Guy dig into why so many of us experience our jobs as far more stressful than they objectively need to be, what the Goldilocks zone of stress actually looks like, and how to catch yourself before you blow past it. Guy also speaks candidly about his own early burnout and the slow, identity-shifting work it took to come back from it—including why your Netflix queue might not be doing what you think it's doing when it comes to real recovery. David Hughes, the Global People Leader for Costa Coffee (now at HSBC), discusses the company's innovative approach to hiring using AI. Costa Coffee, a global brand with over 2,000 stores in the UK, faces significant hiring challenges due to high turnover rates and the need to hire thousands of baristas annually. David explains how Costa has shifted its focus from hiring the “best” talent to finding the “best fit” talent that aligns with the company's values and culture. Using Sapia's AI chat-based assessment, Costa has built a simple 5-question open chat survey that lets Costa identify the culture, behavioral, and work skills for best fit. This process not only scales to 350,000+ candidates, it also gives each candidate a personalized assessment and is rated 9 out of 10 on netpromoter score. In other words, candidates love it! Why Does Success Feel So Hard (When You're Good at Your Job)? You're successful. You're respected. So why does work feel heavier, more exhausting, and less fulfilling than it should? Burnout in capable professionals rarely comes from failure. It comes from years of being the person who steps in, figures it out, and carries more than their share. In this episode, Blake explores why high performers feel exhausted even when they're doing everything "right". You'll hear why common fixes like rest, boundaries, or a new role rarely create lasting change, and you'll learn what actually does.   Episode Highlights When Success Starts Feeling Heavy [01:00] - A client who did everything right but felt exhausted [02:15] - "I keep over-giving and I don't know how to stop" [03:20] - When caring deeply still leaves you drained How Being Capable Becomes Costly [04:10] - The ability that made you successful started costing you [05:30] - When success strategies quietly turn into stress patterns Why Change Doesn't Stick [06:45] - Changing environments but finding the same cycles [08:20] - Root patterns driven by the subconscious What Actually Creates Sustainable Success [09:45] - How to change the patterns keeping you stuck [10:50] - Success doesn't have to require self-sacrifice Powerful Quotes "This isn't the kind of burnout where you hate your job. It's the kind where you care deeply and you're still drained." -Blake Schofield "Over-responsibility and hyper-performance aren't personality traits. They're actually ways of living that you learned how to do in order to adapt." -Blake Schofield "This is not a willpower problem. It's not a discipline problem. And it's not a capability problem. It's a root pattern problem." -Blake Schofield "Success does not have to feel this hard. And nothing's wrong with you. You're not lazy or ungrateful and you're not failing. You're just operating from a pattern that's outlived its usefulness." -Blake Schofield   Resources Mentioned   Drained at the end of the day & want more presence in your life? Dan talks about some of the world famous fixtures that they do, such as the one at Saks 5th Ave, Radio City Musica Hall and all over 5th and 6th ave in midtown.  Dan talks a bit about the other work that they do all over the country. He tells us which state has the biggest market for christmas in the country, and what the second biggest city that they decorate is.  Jae asks about some more details regarding the creation process, and Dan talks about the two different ways that they work on projects: Clients come to them with the idea that they have to execute, or their prefered way which is doing all of the creating and designing themselves. He talks about what that process is like too. Finally, Kelly asks him what his favorite christmas decoration is in New York and Dan surprises us and says that it's one that he doesn't do!  But above all else; Dan Casterella is a New Yorker.  Kelly Kopp's Social Media:@NewYorkCityKopp American Christmas on Social Media: @AmericanChristmas Jae's Social Media: Studiojae170@gmail.com Chapters (00:00:00) - The New Yorkers: Dan Castorella(00:02:10) - American Christmas: Celebrating the Holidays(00:05:24) - How to Win at Your Job(00:09:21) - How to Create a Holiday Installation in New York(00:14:30) - Santa Claus and the Mount Vernon Christmas(00:15:57) - Christmas decorations on display in New York(00:17:33) - Tree Lighting in New York(00:19:57) - American Christmas Expands(00:21:28) - Christmas in America: Dan Lowe(00:25:08) - How To Put Up a Christmas Tree!(00:28:24) - What is the biggest project that you do?(00:29:41) - Favorite Decorations in New York(00:31:53) - Do You Design Christmas Decorations?(00:34:07) - An Installation With a Proposal(00:36:21) - Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday Display(00:40:34) - The New York City Holiday Decorations(00:42:19) - Favorite Subway Line in New York(00:44:17) - Christmas in New York

It can be one of the most frustrating things in the world. That discontent and confusion about your professional life and where it's headed. The feeling that keeps you up at night, scrolling job postings, revisiting all the “what if's” from your past, and daydreaming about a complete 180 you've always thought about, but never acted on. Staying in this mental space doesn't just drain your energy, it leaves you lost, confused about your future and what a step forward even looks like. Whether you're burnt out, fed up with the bureaucracy, or simply craving a new challenge— you need definitive clarity about what you want, along with an honest map of the current landscape so you can make the next right move. This episode will cut through the worry and wishful thinking as Brett lays out: How to identify which passion is worth acting on, even when your head is spinning with options A framework to pressure-test a career move—so you can dip a toe or get your foot in the door without blowing up your life The role of bridge jobs and the realistic steps needed to work your way toward that bigger goal (even if it feels far off right now) Ways to break out of the psychological paralysis that keeps people stuck in neutral How to bucket your tradeoffs so you don't let fear creep in, remembering nothing is final

Transcript Welcome to another episode of Bella in Your Business. My name is Bella Vasta, and today I want to show you what's possible. This episode isn't a “5 tips” kind of teaching session. It's meant to expand your mind and help you realize, “Oh my gosh, this is doable—and not just for Bella, but for me too.” Everything I'm going to talk about has been incorporated into my business and into many of my clients' businesses. Today is about planting a seed. I won't go into every “how-to,” but I'll explain what's possible and how it came to be. For some quick context, I ran my own pet sitting company from 2002 to 2016. When I sold it, I was heartbroken that I couldn't do the marketing for it anymore. So, as I always do, I innovated. At that time, no one was doing marketing specifically for pet businesses. That's how Better Marketing with Bella started. I wanted to help as many people as I could, but I was just one person. So we started small with 5 or 6 people, and over the years the program grew to over 40 clients. Back then, video content wasn't a priority—reels didn't even exist. Carousels weren't a thing. But as trends evolved, so did we. We created marketing content using client photos, fonts, colors, and logos. It wasn't fully custom, but we made it feel personal. The goal was always to meet clients halfway. I couldn't be you. I couldn't post your exact beachside summer photos if you lived in the mountains. But I always longed to create custom marketing—unique content based on someone's real needs, real brand, and real goals. Eventually, I ended the old program. Our last delivery was May 15, 2025. The first delivery of the new program was just two days ago. That's where this story really begins.

Gone are the days when O'Doul's was the only alcohol-free option around.  Paul says his favorite was Hiyo.   Better Rhodes – code RECOVERYELEVATOR15   [04:05] More thoughts from Paul:   Paul shares an article called Benefits of Play for Adults that shares the importance of being playful as adults. Remember that as a child, you were naturally playful without alcohol. Somewhere along the way we forget how to be playful and then we link alcohol with having fun.   This is great news for healing. Just like some of us have goals to hit a certain amount of steps in our day, you should aim to have at least a certain amount of laughs. Laughter is the best medicine and some of the side effects may be a boost to your immune system, release of endorphins, reduction of stress and anxiety and improvement of mood.   Your job, listeners, is to have fun. The healing pathway will contain challenges, but overall, it cannot be more stressful or boring than when you were drinking. You need to have fun and please don't take yourself too seriously at any moment on this journey.   [09:48] Paul introduces Fanny:   Fanny has lived in NC most of her life and recently proposed to her fiancé who she plans to marry in March. For her profession, she says it's all things food. Recipe developer, food writer and content creator. For fun, Fanny enjoys outside activities such as biking, hiking and walking her dogs.   During high school and college, Fanny says she drank like any other college kid and always enjoyed a party. Over time, Fanny found herself using alcohol to push down negativity and some lingering questions about her sexuality.   When Fanny moved to California for a while, she said drinking was fun again. She says she learned a lot about herself there including that she didn't want to be an actress, her real passion was food, and she found herself wanting to return to North Carolina.   After moving back, Fanny met someone, and they eventually married. Drinking was a big part of their lifestyle. They moved to Illinois for his job right before the pandemic and found themselves isolated without family and friends. Fanny says the drinking ramped up and there were some incidents that gave her a lot of guilt and shame. They eventually divorced and Fanny moved back to NC.   Fanny started a relationship with a friend from college who expressed their concerns over drinking because their ex had an issue. Fanny assured her that she was not like she was in college. After a two-day bender, it was Fanny's girlfriend that helped her call her parents and get some help. Fanny was able to find a rehab in Western NC with the help of her therapist.   Fanny says the first few days were tough, but eventually she settled in and became a sponge trying to learn everything about the addiction. Through her rehab she was exposed to several different recovery modalities and found she enjoys Recovery Dharma the most. She really identifies and enjoys the Buddhist perspective on recovery.   Recovery Elevator We took the elevator down; we got to take the stairs back up.
