Power utility, Eskom will be implementing stage 6 loadshedding from 12:00 until further notice. Eskom says this is due to a high number of breakdowns since midnight. Meanwhile , Eskom had warned South Africans to brace themselves for prolonged load shedding as the power utility is implementing major capital projects and repairs. According to Eskom this work carries significant risk and will serve to further increase the implementation of load shedding. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha and Lungile Mashele, an independent energy economist
Eskom will implement continuous stage 2 loadshedding until further notice due to the breakdown of six generating units at five power stations, the power utility said on Friday afternoon. There has also been a delay in return to service of "numerous" generating units, spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha added. A generating unit each at Duvha, Grootvlei, Hendrina, Majuba and two units at Arnot Power Station, were taken offline for repairs over the past 24 hours. The delay in returning to service two generating units at Camden and one unit each at Arnot and Duvha power stations contributed to capacity constraints. Eskom is moreover facing a budget crunch for diesel supplies for its open cycle gas turbines. It anticipates increased loadshedding over the next 6 to 12 months, it said. "The imminent refuelling and maintenance outage, as well as the long-term operation project of Unit 1 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, together with the October chimney failure that has forced three generation units offline at Kusile Power Station, will further reduce available generation capacity and significantly increase the occurrence of loadshedding during the next 6 to 12 months." Currently 4 423MW of capacity is out on planned maintenance, while another 16 708MW is unavailable due to breakdowns.
Load shedding will be suspended at 05:00 on Saturday morning due to lower weekend demand and adequate emergency generation reserves, Eskom said in a statement on Friday. The embattled power utility has implemented a record spell of unbroken rolling power cuts as it suffered a series of breakdowns at many of its key power stations in recent weeks. "While the generation capacity constraints persist, the suspension of loadshedding is possible due to the anticipated lower weekend demand, as well as adequate levels of emergency generation reserves. Eskom will publish a further update on Sunday afternoon, or as soon as there are any significant changes. Since yesterday afternoon a generation unit each at Camden, Grootvlei, Hendrina, Kendal, Kriel, Majuba and Tutuka power stations have returned to service," spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said. A generating unit at Duvha Power Station was taken offline to be repaired. Eskom currently has 5 512 MW on planned maintenance, with another 13 484 MW out due to breakdowns.

State-owned Eskom, the South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (Saretec) – based at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) – and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) have signed a partnership agreement for the development of a new training facility to be established at the soon-to-be-decommissioned Komati power station, in Mpumalanga. The training facility is part of Eskom's contribution to a just transition for the local community as the Komati power station is decommissioned. The facility will enable Eskom to reskill, retrain and upskill workers and communities, where needed, with a view to developing skills, among which would be skills aimed at serving in renewable energy generation projects that are planned for the future. “We do not have enough skills in the country to meet the jobs that will be created through the renewables value chain. Launching this skills training facility is part of meeting that need. When this training facility works, we will replicate it at all of our power stations,” Eskom Just Energy Transition GM Mandy Rambharos said at the signing ceremony held at the power station on September 23. In addition to the training facility, which is part of Eskom's Komati Repowering and Repurposing project, Komati, which once had 1 000 MW coal-fired generation capacity, will now be repowered with 150 MW of solar, 70 MW of wind and 150 MW of batteries. Eskom has also established a containerised microgrid assembly factory at the mothballed power plant. The Komati Repowering and Repurposing project is one of the largest coal-fired power plant decommissioning, repowering and repurposing projects globally and it is hoped that it will provide a tangible case study on how to transition fossil fuel assets to cleaner sources of energy. “Mpumalanga is endowed with the best of resources for the just energy transition – wind, solar, skilled people and available grid capacity – and, therefore, has the potential to once again become the thriving energy hub of the country,” Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said at the signing ceremony. The funding for the training facility will be provided by the GEAPP. These funds will be used to establish the training facility and will enable Saretec – the only fully accredited training centre for renewable energy in South Africa recognised by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations – and Eskom to educate, reskill and upskill Eskom Komati power station staff and qualifying beneficiaries from the surrounding communities in the Mpumalanga region. Upon completion, the training centre will be managed by Eskom's Academy of Learning, which will be supported by Saretec to achieve accreditation over time, enabling Eskom to replicate this initiative in other locations. “South Africa can be a lighthouse for emerging markets, demonstrating the way to achieve a truly just, job-creating energy transition. This new training facility will focus on the upskilling of workers before decommissioning has even begun. It can inform reskilling programmes at other power stations and catalyse investment in South Africa's energy transition,” GEAPP executive director Joseph Nganga highlighted. Rambharos said the partnership agreement presented a unique opportunity for the creation and scaling up of new industries across the renewables value chain. Taking full advantage of these opportunities would require the retraining and upskilling of parts of South African workforce. “This will mitigate the risk of job losses related to the decommissioning of coal-fired power stations and create new job opportunities, particularly for unemployed young people. The Komati Training Facility will serve as a blueprint for how these training requirements can be fulfilled,” she said, reiterating Eskom's previously stated vision for Mpumalanga to remain the energy hub of South Africa. “Saretec is very different to other energy centres around the world and I know that we have the req...

State-owned electricity utility Eskom has confirmed that Unit 2 at the Koeberg nuclear power station was returned to service at 20:24 on Sunday, August 7. “The unit is currently loading and will require about ten days to reach full output,” spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha confirmed in an emailed response to an Engineering News enquiry. The 920-MW unit was shut for refuelling and extended maintenance on January 18 and was initially scheduled to return to service in June. The extended maintenance was also meant to have included the replacement of three steam generators, but the replacement was deferred to August 2023 following an assessment, conducted together with Framatome, which concluded that Eskom was not ready to implement the project. The deferral did not lead to any shortening in the duration of the outage, despite the fact that it accounted for one stage of load-shedding every time the utility has resorted to rotational power cuts since January. The outage coincided with the most intensive period yet for load-shedding, with Eskom having even resorted to Stage 6 cuts during a wildcat strike in late June and early July, which affected a number of its coal stations. Despite the smaller scope of the shutdown, the date for returning Unit 2 to service was initially shifted to mid-July, then the end of July and finally into August. The steam generator replacement (SGR) programme is also key to Eskom securing a Long-Term Operations licence from the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) to extend the life of the plant by a further 20 years. The licence is currently due to expire in July 2024. The application to extend the operational life was submitted by Eskom on May 10, 2021, and accepted by the NNR for further processing on August 17, 2021. On July 26 this year, the NNR confirmed that Eskom had submitted the safety case in support of its application to extend Koeberg's operational life. The replacement of the Unit 1 steam generators, meanwhile, is still planned to take place during the unit's upcoming extended maintenance, scheduled for December. However, concerns have already been raised about Eskom's readiness for that outage. These concerns coincide with major changes to the leadership at Koeberg, with Eskom announcing in early July that Mahesh Valaitham would act as Koeberg power station GM, owing to the fact that the current acting GM, Nomawethu Mtwebana, had been selected to join the World Association of Nuclear Operators, which is based in the US, as a reverse loanee for the next year. In addition, Eskom chief nuclear officer Riedewaan Barkadien departed the organisation at the end of July, with Keith Featherstone acting in the position while a recruitment process was undertaken. COO Jan Oberholzer has stated previously that the deferral of the Unit 2 SGR programme was “not ideal”, as it would not take place close to the expiry of the unit's licence. “[The delays have] unfortunately created a situation that we are cramping what needs to happen for the long-term operation of Koeberg right until the end, and that means that the risk obviously is increased.”

The National Union of Mineworkers, Num, and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa, Numsa say there is no wage agreement with Eskom. Yesterday Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan announced the power utility had reached a wage agreement with striking workers. The two unions say this is false. For more on this, Elvis Presslin spoke to Livhuwani Mammburu, the National spokesperson of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Eskom spokesperson, Sikonathi Mantshantsha...
Eskom sê hy gaan tugstappe doen teen stakende werknemers. Die kragvoorsiener se woordvoerder, Sikonathi Mantshantsha, sê die betogings by Eskom is onwettig omdat elektrisiteit as 'n noodsaaklike diens beskou word.
Load-shedding will be escalated to Stage 4 on Monday afternoon, Eskom announced. This is owing to a unit at Kusile power station tripping earlier on Monday, taking 720MW of generating capacity with it, Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said. "While this unit has since returned to service, it will slowly load up to full capacity during the night." This necessitates Stage 4 load-shedding to be implemented from 17:00 to 22:00, Mantshantsha said. "Eskom will continue to closely monitor the system, adjust and communicate any changes as may be necessary. "This morning a generating unit at Hendrina, Tutuka and Kriel power stations were returned to service while a unit each at Arnot Power Station was taken offline for repairs. We currently have 1 904MW on planned maintenance, while another 17 255MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns." Eskom appealed to all South Africans to help limit the impact of load-shedding by reducing the usage of electricity and to switch off all non-essential items.
State-owned utility Eskom was forced to implement Stage 4 load-shedding on the evening of May 16 after Unit 2 at the Kusile power station tripped, Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said. The tripped Kusile unit removed 720 MW of generating capacity from the already constrained grid. “The major challenge that we have at Kusile is the novel technology of flue gas desulphurisation (FGD), which we have struggled to bed down. “This particular emission control equipment causes us to have a single point of failure on a unit so if the unit doesn't work, there is no way of bypassing the FGD, causing us to have to shut down the entire unit,” Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter said. He said the utility had been having considerable challenges on the FGD unit and had obtained support from the original-equipment manufacturer to assist. “We're struggling to get that under control,” De Ruyter said. While the tripped Kusile unit had since been returned to service, Mantshantsha said it would slowly load up to full capacity during the night. Moreover, he said a generating unit at each of the Hendrina, Tutuka and Kriel power stations had also been returned to service, while a unit at the Arnot power station had been taken offline for repairs. Mantshantsha said the utility had 1 904 MW on planned maintenance, while another 17 255 MW of capacity was unavailable owing to breakdowns. Eskom COO Jan Oberholzer explained that the load forecast for the evening of May 16 was just under 31 000 MW, while the capacity available – excluding gas – was just over 27 000 MW. This meant that there was a shortfall of about 4 000 MW. However, Oberholzer said the forecast demand peak was expected to rise to about 33 000 MW by the end of May, which made it all the more urgent that this capacity be restored urgently. “We do have a significant shortfall for the evening peak because our demand pattern has moved to a typical winter pattern. The peaks during the evening are much more than during the daytime. The system is capable of handling daytime demand,” De Ruyter explained. He said that, while this limited the impact on business, the impact on domestic consumers was “particularly pronounced and highly regrettable”. THE STATE OF ESKOM'S CAPACITY De Ruyter explained that two generating units recently went down at Arnot, while another unit at Duvha had been out for more than six months owing to very poor performance from in-house contractor Eskom Rotek Industries and the power station management team. He said that the Duvha unit was supposed to have come back on May 5 but this date had not been met. He promised that appropriate action would be taken against those responsible for the failure to deliver the Duvha station back to working order. Meanwhile, Koeberg's unit 2 continued to be nonoperational owing to refuelling, De Ruyter said, depriving the grid of a further 900 MW of stable power. Oberholzer confirmed that Koeberg's dormant unit would only return to operation in June as extensive maintenance work continued to be carried out at the plant. Moreover, a hydrogen explosion at Medupi's unit 4 removed another 720 MW last August. The damage caused by the explosion has still not been rectified and the affected unit remains offline. “The combination of these two units in particular really has put us in a position where our capacity is incredibly constrained,” De Ruyter commented. On a more positive note, the Tutuka power station had three units currently operating, which means the power station was operating better than it has historically, De Ruyter pointed out. Meanwhile, two generation units at Matla were also down, adding to the constraints. At Matimba, De Ruyter said, the utility continued to experience challenges with cooling fans, which are causing load losses. “When the station was conceived and built in the 1970s, the station was oriented in the wrong direction relative to the prevailing wind. This has caused us to be very dependent on additional cooling and, ...
Eskom has suspended Stage 2 load shedding as of 5 am this morning. The power utility implemented Stage 2 load shedding just after 6 pm yesterday after Unit 5 of the Medupi Power Station tripped taking some 700Mega Watts capacity with it. For more on this Elvis Presslin spoke to Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha
Eskom might plunge the nation into darkness this festive season over compliance with emissions standards. The power utility may be facing an energy crisis as a result of being forced to take power plants offline. That is after the environment department rejected Eskom's application to allow it to continue with current status quo. Eskom is battling to meet the required Minimum Emission Standards regulations. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Eskom's spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha...
Eskom spokesperson, Sikonathi Mantshantsha says the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) is fully aware and is in support of the work to be done at Koeberg. Mantshantsha says the other unit of the plant will also undergo the same maintenance work, effectively meaning the Koeberg plan may run at half capacity for almost the entire year in 2022. The embattled power utility said the electricity system was “severely constrained” after the failure of five generating units. Five generation units at various power stations had failed throughout yesterday. Load-shedding would be required to be implemented at very short notice, Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said.
Former journalist and current Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha has launched a crowdfunding appeal for around R1-million to cover the costs of fighting a defamation suit filed against him by Matshela Koko. In an opinion piece in the Daily Maverick on Tuesday, Mantshantsha writes that one year ago he received a summons to answer a defamation charge from Koko, which includes a R600 000 damages claim. "The lawsuit followed a series of news articles I published in the pursuit of my chosen career as a financial journalist in the seven years to June 2019 in the financial publications of Times Media Group, now Arena Holdings," said Mantshantsha. After leaving Times Media, where he worked at Business Day and the Financial Mail, Mantshantsha joined Daily Maverick before being appointed Eskom spokesperson in January 2020. In the article, Mantshantsha appeals for financial help to fight the case. He says that although Arena Holdings has already settled about a third of the legal cost, a shortfall of around R1-million remains. "Needless to say, most journalists such as I am have never seen such a sum of money," he said. Koko, who briefly served as Eskom's acting CEO during his more than two decades at the power utility, told Fin24 on Tuesday that his defamation suit was directed against "false and defamatory" statements allegedly made by Mantshantsha when he was still a journalist. "He must be held to account. You can't lie and claim the lie is in the public interest. That's rubbish," he said via WhatsApp. Koko resigned from Eskom in February 2018 without admitting to wrongdoing.
Eskom has refuted a statement issued by the African National Congress's (ANC's) Greater Johannesburg Region branch over an apparent power-purchase agreement between the city and the state-owned power utility. In Friday's statement, the ANC said Mayor Mpho Moerane had signed an agreement that will allow the city to take over power supply to areas such as Soweto, Orange Farm and Ivory Park. However, Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha dismissed the claim as "totally untrue". The ANC said in the statement that those specific areas "have long been at the receiving end of unreliable electricity supply", and this this ultimately had "a negative impact on the delivery of services in the City of Johannesburg". "The signed agreement ensures that the electricity bought in bulk from Eskom allows the city's electricity distributor, City Power, safe and reliable distribution of electricity to the residents of Johannesburg," the ANC branch said. Mantshantsha, however, explained that Eskom had merely signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the development of a business case for the possible transfer to the city. "The municipality must still do the due [diligence] on their part to confirm that what we have proposed to them is acceptable. They are in the process of appointing transaction advisors to assist them in the development of the business case," Mantshantsha said. He added that any possible transaction is years away - if it happens at all. "There is debt that must be paid by the customers to Eskom, there is infrastructure COJ [City of Johannesburg] would have to buy from Eskom. "There is infrastructure that still needs to be implemented by whoever distributes the electricity. On top of all of that, Treasury, DOE (Department of Energy), DMRE (Department of Mineral Resources and Energy), Nersa (National Energy Regulator of South Africa), Cogta (Cooperate Governance and Traditional Affairs) would all have to still approve," he said. He concluded that by law, the public would need to have a say in the process.
Eskom has announced that Unit 4 at the Medupi powerstation in Lephalale, Limpopo exploded last night. The power utility says no injuries have been reported and all employees at the plant have been accounted for, however emergency services have attended to seven employees for shock. In a statement, Eskom says Unit 4 has been on a short term outage when the incident occurred and all the work on the unit has been suspended with immediate effect. The incident has also caused Unit 5 to trip, and work to return the unit to service is underway. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha...

Power utility Eskom is urgently seeking new providers of technical support after Oracle Corp.'s South African unit withdrew its services over a payment dispute. The state power utility has been in a disagreement with Oracle, which initially claimed Eskom underpaid it by about R7.3 billion, before reducing the amount to R380 million. Eskom is only prepared to pay R166 million. Eskom earlier this month lost a court bid to compel Oracle to continue providing services until April 2022. We spoke to Eskom's spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha.
A forensic investigation by legal firm Bowman has found that an oil blending and storage company, Econ Oil & Energy allegedly secured deals to supply Eskom with fuel oil worth more than R15 billion at inflated prices by paying inducements, including donations to the ANC. Bloomberg reports that according to the forensic report, Econ Oil & Energy allegedly won the contracts with the help of Thandi Marah, then senior manager of business enablement at Eskom, who allegedly interfered in the tender processes. We spoke to Eskom's spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha.
Eskom is in a contractual dispute with its technical services provider Oracle, which claims that the power utility has underpaid it and owes it over R7 billion. Eskom disputes this figure but acknowledges that losing Oracle will have catastrophic consequences. Business Day TV's Alishia Seckam spoke to Sikonathi Mantshantsha, Spokesperson for Eskom for more detail.

Eskom says it will be restricting electricity supply on a rotational basis in high density areas of the Gauteng province. The power utility says it will target areas, which are overloading and damaging infrastructure through illegal connections. The power utility says it has continued to record a "substantially high" trend of energy demand during peak periods in the mornings and evenings in certain areas of the province. Speaking to my colleage Francis Herd Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha insists that their decision to restrict electricity supply does not amount to load shedding.
