Vanessa was fortunate to have experienced working with a doula for her second birth. What a difference she made. We talked to the thoughtful, lovely and elegant Jeanne-Marie to explore why one of these professionals might be a great option for your birth, no matter where you plan on having your baby – at a hospital, a birth center, or at home. We like to think of a doula as your birth experience's COO, the homie that will always have your back, and your bedside therapist. We talk about the role of the doula (they are not just for mom!) and how to find one that works for you. According to Dona international, a doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to their client before, during and shortly after childbirth to help them achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible. When you think about preparing your home for the arrival of your new baby your mind might go to a place of baby-proofing and purchasing toys and gear like cribs and high chairs. However, what if you home didn't need more stuff? Today we're looking at how to create an environment that encourages your baby's growth and honors their developmental stages through the Montessori lens To have this conversation, I invited Jeanne-Marie Paynel onto Yoga | Birth | Babies. Jeanne-Marie is a parenting mentor, Montessori home consultant, a doula, host of The Art of Parenting podcast and founder of Your Parenting Mentor. We have a fantastic conversation and in full disclosure I drink the Montessori punch. Both my kids went to Montessori preschools. We took a lot of their offerings and brought them home, so this topic and approach really resonated with me. I deeply value what is being discussed about the idea that we need to get more and more and more to better support our child's growth but often it's actually about being more simplistic. I love this approach to encourage kids to discover on their own, allow them to be who they really are, and see things from their point of view, (and I mean literally getting down on the ground to do this). I'm really excited for you to listen to this conversation. Do you ever wonder what is meant “to be a scientific observer”? Listen in to find out why observation is so important in nurturing our child's potential. Click here to get your free guide and journal plus the Show Notes. I've often been asked to explain the significance of being a 'scientific observer'. Today I'm answering this important question. What I Talked About: What is observation How to be a scientific observer What to Observe Observing ourselves, the environment, and our children Things to Remember: “Observation is a perpetual mindfulness practice using all of our senses.” - Jeanne-Marie Paynel “Do less, observe more, enjoy most.” - Magda Gerber “The most important is to respect all reasonable forms of activity in which the child engages and try to understand them.” “An observer obviously needs something to observe and he must be trained in order to be able to see and recognize objective truth, he must also have at his disposal children placed in such an environment that they can manifest their natural traits.” “There is in the child a special kind of sensitivity which leads him to absorb everything about him, and it is this work of observing and absorbing that alone enables him to adapt himself to life. He does it in virtue of an unconscious power that exists in childhood…” “When dealing with children there is greater need for observing than of probing” "Even when helping and serving the children, she (the teacher) must not cease to observe them, because the birth of concentration in a child is as delicate a phenomenon as the bursting of a bud into bloom." - Dr. Maria Montessori “Observe first. Wait a second. Then act only if you have to.” - Dr. Silvia Dubovoy Click here for Show Notes and more from Jeanne-Marie, Your Parenting Mentor

I understand. I see why you feel this way. This kind of empathy disarms us.” – Daniel J. She offers essential tools to help parents follow our intuition, trust ourselves and trust our children. Parenting Mentor and Montessori Educator Jeanne-Marie Paynel, M.Ed, is a Parenting Mentor and Home Consultant dedicated to helping parents let go of the overwhelm so they can enjoy raising self-sufficient and resilient children with ease. Host of The Art of Parenting podcast and Founder of Your Parenting Mentor (formerly Voila Montessori) Jeanne Marie guides expectant parents, caregivers and parents of young children on how to better prepare their homes and themselves for their children to thrive during the first years of life. She believes that a supportive and peaceful atmosphere at home will allow every child to grow up as an independent, confident and capable learner. She combines her three passions: Montessori, Conscious Parenting and Positive Discipline. Her mission is to help parents appreciate the true importance of their role - not as servants or teachers, but as supporters and guides of their children's natural development. In This Episode In this episode we delve into the importance of trust in learning. Trust in our children and what they want to learn and trust in ourselves. Jeanne Marie explains how this is a fundamental part of Montessori and homeschooling. We discuss; Maria Montessori and the Montessori Method The start of the first Montessori school in 1907- The Children's House Understanding human development and why that is a foundational piece of Montessori What sets Montessori apart from traditional school A prepared environment for our children- supporting the curiosity to learn Mixed Ages, freedom of movement, freedom within limits and following the child The differences between Montessori and other child led methods The 4 Planes of a Child's Development in Montessori Montessori in Homeschooling Mindful Parenting and ways we can practice being more present Jeanne Marie's thoughts on Screen time and the influence on children's development My biggest takeaway from my interview with Jeanne Marie is that whether we are using the Montessori method at a school or in homeschooling, the foundation always remains the same. The key values in the Montessori method are actually the same key values in self directed learning. That is trust in your children, be their advocate in curiosity and support life long learning. Everyday Rockstar (0:00:00) Lisa and Richie talk with this week's featured Everyday Rockstar. You can nominate yourself or someone you know by sending us an email at thelisashow@byu.edu. Work/Play Balance for Kids (0:08:18) Finding the balance between work and play seems to be one of the everlasting struggles as an adult. But have you ever thought of it as a problem for children too? We send them to school to learn from teachers and books, but the skills they develop during playtime can be just as important to their development in other ways. So how do you find that sweet spot between work and play? Joining us on the show today is Jeanne-Marie Paynel, a parenting mentor and home consultant, here with us to discuss helping your child balance their work time and play time. Servicing Refugee and Immigrant Students (0:23:37) The early years of our schooling experiences are hard. We try to add our letters and read our numbers and it seems impossible that we'll ever get them straight. But eventually things fall into place and we get the hang of school. However, this experience is not shared by all school kids. There are many students who have experienced interrupted schooling and for whom English is likely not their mother tongue. These students typically come from immigrant and refugee populations and have very different educational needs than those who don't face these barriers. Here to discuss what the educational needs are of these immigrant and refugee students and how to meet these needs is Dr. Lisa Auslander, Principal Investigator and Project Director for New York City's Bridges to Academic Success. Shiners (0:36:20) What image comes to mind when you think of shoe shining? Maybe a busy train station or a stand at an international airport. Probably tall, high-backed chairs occupied by people reading a newspaper. But what about the people in front of the stand, the shoe shiners themselves? What's their story and what led them to shoe shining? Maybe they see it as an art form, or maybe it's just a job that pays the bills. Well, Stacey Tenenbaum asked these same questions, so she set out to find answers. Here to discuss the stories of those in this underappreciated industry is the director of the documentary series "Shiners", Stacey Tenenbaum herself. Your Mental Health Alarm (1:01:20) Over the last few years there has been a lot of focus on spreading awareness of the importance of mental health. Awareness is a fantastic first step, but how do we take care of our mental health? How do we even recognize that we NEED to focus on our mental health? It doesn't always come naturally to take a step back and really think about your headspace. Are we having healthy thought patterns? Are we handling our stressors well? There's so much to keep track of! Luckily for us, there are oftentimes “mental health alarms” that can alert us to the fact that we may need to pay some attention to our mental health. Joining us today to teach us about tuning in to our mental health alarms is Stacy Penright. Between her busy job as a business initiatives consultant with Wells Fargo and her work with her nonprofit “Respect My Voice,” Stacy has had plenty of practice learning to pay attention to her mental health alarms. Keeping Your Dog Healthy (1:19:30) Germany's parliament has recently proposed a law that orders all dog owners to walk their dogs for at least two hours a day. While keeping our most loyal companions physically active is extremely important, is the law reasonable? Life can be busy and two hours can be a huge chunk of our day, and some dogs may not even need two whole hours. So how do we know what's best for our own dog? Joining us today is veterinarian and host of the podcast Vet School Unleashed, Dr. Seth Williams who is here to answer all our questions on how we can keep our dogs physically healthy. ALS Legislation (1:30:51) On The Lisa Show, we are privileged to discuss and learn about a variety of topics. Some are random and silly, and others are deeply meaningful. Today, we are covering one of those personal and important topics. We are discussing ALS. This morning, we feel very honored to speak with Rachel and Ryan May, a couple personally affected by ALS, as they share specific ways in which each one of us can help fight the disease through supporting new legislation.

Are you wondering what to do about the injustice that has been plaguing us for centuries? Listen in as I share my personal thoughts and invite you to join me on this important fight we must take on. This past week was a rude awakening and to be honest an embarrassment to how little awareness I have of the deep-rooted racial injustices that have been and are still perpetrated in the US, where I reside. Having been raised bi-culturally by open-minded liberal parents does not exempt me from ignorance. I realize I have a lot to learn, as I listen to stories and scholars to be able to do better by you, by me and all the children who deserve better from us. We must work together in creating a world where the treatment of people is never based on bias, whether it be the color of our skin, our sexual identity, our spiritual identity, our mental or physical differences. I hope and encourage you to join me in doing this important work of listening, learning, and doing better together. What we talked about: Sharing my personal thoughts and experience on the racial injustices that still exist today How my privilege is being able to learn about these injustices and not have experienced them first hand. Milk Trails: A Journey In The Out-Of-Hospital Birth Experience
In this special episode, we have Jeanne-Marie Paynel, a mother of two as well as a parenting guide and mentor. Jeanne-Marie has a Masters in Montessori education and over 15 years of experience guiding and mentoring parents and children. She is the founder of Voila Montessori – a parenting school and mentoring community based in San Diego, California. Jeanne-Marie and I talk about about her passions of the Montessori philosophy as well as ways to improve your relationship with your child (through what’s known as) Conscious Parenting and Positive Discipline. Also, (what was most intriguing to me) as a home consultant, Jeanne-Marie guides families on how best to prepare their home from birth onward to promote a peaceful environment for both parent and child. She is a beautiful inspiration and reminder of the true importance of our role as caregivers – not as servants of children but supporters of their natural curiosity, wonder and development.
Do you stress when it comes to mealtime with your little ones? Listen to get some helpful strategies. Mealtime can bring up a sense of dread and stress for some, but it doesn't have to. In this episode, I share simple strategies and shifts that will help you create a peaceful and positive ritual around nourishing your bodies together as a family. What I talked about: What is your relationship with food? Children are very aware of what their body needs. The child's nutritional plate is per week, not per day, nor each meal. The foundation: feeding from infancy and the loving connection you build with your child. When you notice their interest in what you're eating, provide options for them to put in their mouths. Involving children in cooking and allowing them to try what you are eating. Using utensils from an early age. Invite them to the dining room table with the proper chair. Put everything on the table before sitting down together to minimize getting up. Phones/screens are not invited to the table. Offer a variety of healthy options and let them choose. Set boundaries around mealtime and snacks. Take them to the market and the farm to involve them in the ritual of food. Children are very capable and eager to help you in the kitchen. Be open to inviting them. Things to Remember: “Children are more in tune with what their body needs than we typically give them credit for.” -Jeanne-Marie Paynel “The process is what is important, not the end result.” -Jeanne-Marie Paynel “You don't have to repeat what was done to you. It's up to you to reinvent it.” -Jeanne-Marie Paynel Click here for show notes and more from Jeanne-Marie, Your parenting Mentor.

Let me ask you a personal question...do you have trouble parenting on the same page as some of your parenting partners? If so, listen in for some guidance and strategies on this very subject. A few years back I had the opportunity to interview Patty Wipfler for the first interview series called Be the Best Parent You Can Be. Today, I wanted to share this gem, for it is timeless in its advice and wisdom. What we talked about: Why setting limits and building cooperation with respect is a colossal part of our role as parents How children's behavior is linked to whether they feel connected or not How when a child feels threatened their brain is no longer accessible Whether or not children successfully learn to cooperate without rewards and punishments Things to Remember: Like breakfast, children need a good warm hearty sense of connection in order to make it out into the world. - Patty Wipfler Parenting is emotional work. - Patty Wipfler Click here for Show Notes and more from Jeanne-Marie Paynel, Your Parenting Mentor.

The question and answer episodes are for you and created to answer your most pressing parenting questions. This is the place for you to ask and get my no-nonsense direct answers. What we talked about: Today, I will be answering a common question I get, "What is Positive Discipline?" I also talk about how I personally discovered Positive Discipline and got to work directly with Jane Nelsen, plus I let you in on exactly what Postive Discipline is and how can you benefit from it. The five criteria to Positive Discipline: Does it help the child to have a sense of connection, belonging and significance? Is it kind and firm at the same time? Is it effective long term? Does it teach life skills? Does it invite the child to discover what they are capable of? In addition to raising two beautiful children, Jeanne-Marie holds a Masters in Education, is the founder and CEO of Voila Montessori and is a Positive Discipline trainer. After reading Dr. Montessori's work “The Secret of Childhood” she discovered a passion for guiding children and families in healthy parenting approaches. She wanted parents to appreciate the true importance of their role – not as servants or teachers, but as supporters and guides of their children's natural development. This need in the global community prompted her to launch Voila Montessori, an accessible resources to guide parents in the Montesorri tradition and the Positive Discipline approach. What you'll hear in this episode: It's important to empower our children not enable them Setting up a prepared environment for your children's learning The Montessori philosophy and how it helps children and families today Ways Positive Discipline and the Montessori method merge to provide support The benefits of a child's freedom of movement and choice in their own environment Tools to help families nurture their child's potential How to access Montessori methods and find an appropriate educational environment for your child. What does Joyful Courage mean to you? Joyful Courage – to me for one what comes to mind is being aware of how lucky we are – the practice of gratitude is what brings me great joy. In the context of Montessori, being in awe of what your children are going through, their evolution, their adaptation to the world. Courage is speaking up for what is, and accepting at times that we might be wrong. That we might of not interacted with our child the way that would've felt better and to be okay with going to your child and saying “I didn't like the way I did that” “I'm going to better next time”- It's courageous for adults to say to a child that “I did something wrong”. Being aware that we are not perfect and we are learning next to them. Quotes: “We are not our children's servants. We are here to empower them to do things for themselves”. “My child was going to be my guide in my parenting journey”. (a realization) “A child is an adult in the making”. Have you heard the buzz about “Montessori” but aren't really sure what that means? Is it a parenting style? A type of school? Sunit interviews the founder and CEO of “Voila Montessori” and they discuss how to prepare your home and adapt your child's environment for optimal success and growing great humans. Montessori is an educational method that is based in the understanding that we all have an innate need to learn, and that children are capable of knowing what they need to learn and learning it. The Montessori method allows children to learn on their own. Jeanne Marie thinks Montessori starts with conception…the womb, birth environment, and growing environment are all contributing to a child's development. Join Sunit and Jeanne Marie as they discuss: -preparing and adapting your home for a new child and the four areas of your home you should focus on -the importance of trusting that your child has their own timeline, and not comparing them to other children's timelines -how parents can be guides to their kids and not servants -how to lessen your feelings of “so much to do” by encouraging and involving kids at every stage -unschooling vs Montessori -Montessori “approved” toys through all stages of early life -what advantages the Montessori method provides for children Learn more about Montessori, get resources and find out more about what Jeanne Marie does at: www.voilamontessori.com Join the private fb community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/modernmommyprepschool/
