The ‘mock' battle of Manila took place on 13th August, 1898, when the Spanish Army attempted to save face by staging a low-impact fight with the Americans, handing over the territory of the Philippines without seeming weak. The pseudo engagement aimed for a bloodless resolution, but unintentional shots fired from both sides disrupted the facade. However, the stratagem effectively terminated the Spanish-American war, 106 days after its commencement - and (temporarily) prevented Filipinos from regaining control of their nation. In this episode, The Retrospectors expose the racism underpinning both side's thinking; reveal what Mark Twain thought of U.S. expansionism; and explain why, due to events in Washington, the battle turned out to be entirely unnecessary… Further Reading: • ‘The Spanish-American War in the Philippines and the Battle for Manila' (PBS American Experience): https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/macarthur-spanish-american-war-philippines-and-battle-for-manila/ • ‘Struggle for Freedom - By Cecilio D. José de San Martín gained his military experience serving Spain and fighting the French, sometimes with the British, meeting Wellington, Beresford, and Napoleon. Having served for 22 years in the Spanish Army, Jose de San Martin brilliantly led the armies that overthrew the Spanish to liberate the southern countries of South America. With naval experience, in coordination with former British naval officer Thomas, Lord Cochrane, he worked out how maritime and land forces could support each other, catching the Spanish colonial forces between simulated naval attacks on the one hand and land attacks on the other, forcing them to divide their forces. With technology no different from that available to Hannibal, San Martín crossed the Andes, a mountain range far higher than the Alps (admittedly with horses and mules, not elephants!). Joining us to talk about this national hero of Argentina, Chile and Peru is Lt Gen Diego Luis Suñer, Chief of the Argentine Army from 2016-2018. General Suñer joined the Army in 1979 and retired after 40 years' service in which he commanded multinational troops in Ecuador and Peru, attended the United States Army Command and Staff Course and was a professor at the Argentine Army's Higher School of War.

On Nov. 30, 1895, after joining the Spanish Army's fight against the Cuban rebels, 21-year-old Winston Churchill finally got his wish. He was in the jungle gnawing on a skinny chicken leg for breakfast when a volley of gunfire rang out from the edge of the forest. A bullet passed by his head, killing a soldier's horse. Watching the horse slowly bleed led him to write, “I began to take a more thoughtful view of our enterprise.” Host Dennis Leap finishes his discussion of Chapter 6 with more anecdotes from young Winston.
Serafin de Cuba might be a newcomer to the 2023 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show, but the company has a long history in the tobacco business. The company is run by Arnold Serafin, along with his son Brandon. Arnold's great-grandfather Don Antonio Serafin arrived in Cuba as a soldier in the Spanish Army and would eventually start working in tobacco farming and rolling cigars. Don Antonio's son, Don Ramon Serafin Sr., would found Tabacos Serafin, and his son Don Ramon Jr. later entered the business. When the Cuban Revolution nationalized the cigar business in 1967, Don Ramon left for the United States and settled in the Tampa Bay Area. In 2007 Don Ramon Jr. and his son Arnold would resurrect the family legacy by opening Serafin de Cuba, a tobacco factory located in Tarpon Springs. They would create a couple of brands to honor Don Ramon Sr. and Don Ramon Jr. and have also worked to resurrect some of Tampa's classic cigar brands. Now Serafin de Cuba is eyeing the future, hoping to take their brand national. The PCA 2023 Trade Show provided an excellent stage to introduce people to the brands and the Serafin family's rich history. For the Cigar Coop Coalition Team, this was one of the revelations of the Trade Show. Full PCA Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-qan

Bád ó Armáid na Spáinne á chomóradh i nDoire. Multimedia Journalist An online virtual exhibition is to be launched at the Tower Museum in Derry as part of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of a Spanish Army wreck on the north coast. Iriseoir Ilmheán Tá taispeántas fíorúil ar líne le seoladh ag Músaem an Túir i nDoire mar chuid de chomóradh 50 bliain ó aimsíodh bád raice ó Armáid na Spáinne ar chósta an tuaiscirt. The exact location of the La Trinidad Valencera boat in Blacksmith's Bay was not known for almost 400 years. Ní raibh a fhios go baileach ar feadh nach mór 400 bliain cá raibh an bád La Trinidad Valencera ina luí i mBá Chionn an Ghabha. La Trinidad Valencera went down in 1582 and on February 20, 1971, the fiftieth and tomorrow, the City of Derry Divers Association reunited. Sa bhliain 1582 a chuaigh La Trinidad Valencera síos agus ar an 20 Feabhra 1971, leathchéad bliain is an lá amárach, tháinig Cumann Thumadóirí Chathair Dhoire uirthi arís. The divers managed to take a bronze cannon, textile items and weapons from her. Déirigh leis na tumadóirí canóin chré-umha, earraí teicstíle agus airm a thógáil uaithi. "It was clear from the outset that they were doing this for their preservation rather than personal enrichment, which was extremely important at the time," says Micheál Ó Domhnaill of the Spanish Army Committee, Ireland. "Ba léir ón tús go rabhadar á dhéanamh seo ar mhaithe lena caomhnú seachas saibhriú pearsanta, rud a bhí thar a bheith tábhachtach ag an am," a deir Micheál Ó Domhnaill ó Choiste Armáid na Spáinne, Éireann. David Atherton, a former diver who was instrumental in the construction of the goods from the seabed in the 1970s and 1980s, has fond memories of the work: "It was fantastic. Tá cuimhní ceanúla ag David Atherton, iarthumadóir a raibh lámh mhór aige i dtógáil na n-earraí ó ghrinneall na farraige sna 1970í agus sna 1980í ar an obair: "Bhí sé iontach ar fad. We put a lot of work into it. Chuireamar an-obair isteach ann. We had a very strong team working on it. " Bhí meitheal an-láidir againn ag oibriú air." Local historian Dr Seán Ó Biataigh says that "locals were very proud that the Trinidad Valencera was found so close to the pier in Blacksmith." Deir an staraí áitiúil an Dr Seán Ó Biataigh go raibh "daoine áitiúla an-bhródúil go bhfuarthas an Trinidad Valencera chomh cóngarach don ché i gCionn an Ghabha." To commemorate the divers' achievements and the story of the ship, Derry City and Strabane District Council has put together a virtual online exhibition. Le gaiscí na dtumadóirí agus scéal na loinge a chomóradh, tá taispeántas fíorúil ar líne réitithe ag Comhairle Chathair Dhoire agus Cheantar an tSratha Báin. "People will be able to view the exhibition around the world. "Beidh daoine in ann amharc ar an taispeántas ar fud an domhain. We have a wealth of new digital resources available - including letters, divers' essays and photographs. Tá cuid mhór acmhainní nua digiteacha ar fáil againn - litreacha, aistí na dtumadóirí agus grianghraif ina measc. In addition, we have prepared an online digital tour, "says SDLP Councilor Mary Durkan. Lena chois sin, tá camchuairt dhigiteach ullmhaithe againn ar líne," a deir an Comhairleoir Mary Durkan ón SDLP. It is estimated that about two dozen people were killed when La Trinidad Valencera went down. Meastar gur cailleadh timpeall dhá scór duine nuair a chuaigh La Trinidad Valencera síos. “All the remains are important, not just the cannons but other objects found aboard the Trinidad Valencera and which give personality to those who were lost,” says Micheál Ó Domhnaill. "Tá na hiarsmaí go léir tábhachtach, ní hamháin na gunnaí móra ach rudaí eile a aimsíodh ar bord an Trinidad Valencera agus a thugann pearsantacht dóibh siúd a cailleadh,

The Two Gay Geeks have a chat with Ross Ozarka, filmmaker, all the way from New Zealand. Ross has a very unique way of making films that he will share in the interview. Have a listen to this fascinating story. BTW- even though he is in New Zealand you wouldn't know it. About Ross Ozarka Ross Ozarka is a maker of films using popsicle stick animation. He has created all of the artwork himself for this unique way of making a film Twitter: @PHUG_Media About the Film "Oops, I Murdered the Person the Person I Like Likes" is about Horatio, a servant who loves Princess Bellimperia. The feeling's not mutual: she's involved with a soldier, Andrea, and on top of that, her father has betrothed her to Don Lorenzo, leader of the Spanish Army. So she's got enough on her plate. When Bellimperia sends Horatio to the front lines to deliver a letter, he learns his crush has a secret plan: to have Andrea kill Lorenzo! Horatio warns Lorenzo of this treachery. As a reward, Lorenzo offers to make Horatio a noble... if he takes care of Andrea. When the Spanish Army falls into an ambush, Horatio gets the opportunity to murder the person the person he likes likes. And from there, things just go so wrong. WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS MOVIE: This unique way of making movies will change your perceptions of filmmaking. The tragicomic story provides wry humor and a cathartic exploration of forbidden emotions: greed, anger, ruthlessness, and grief. Plus, you will be introduced to a beautiful yet overlooked classic of Western Literature, "The Spanish Tragedy," by Thomas Kyd. This is the play Shakespeare ripped off to write Hamlet! Today the war comes home to Cap‑Français. What was left of the French buccaneers on Saint-Domingue face off against a well armed, well organized Spanish Army.
The Pilgrims Thanksgiving Holiday was inspired by events in the middle ages and location of their cultural origins. The 3 October Festival in the Netherlands commemorates the anniversary of the 1573–1574 Siege of Leiden, during the Eighty Years' War, when the Spanish Army attempted to capture the city. The first siege was from October 1573 to March by the Spanish returned in May 1574 for the second siege. The city had neglected, in the interim, to pull down the Spanish fortifications and to lay in provisions, though they were warned; with the citizens in despair, the mayor offered his own body for food in an attempt to keep morale up. Provisions had run out after two months, and the Spanish were not ousted until the night of 2/3 October 1574; by that time thousands of Leidenaren had starved. The army of Watergeuzen ("Sea Beggars") led by William the Silent, Prince of Orange, entered the next morning and fed the citizens herring and white bread (haring en wittebrood), and Hutspot later that day.
