Send us a textMary Jennings Hegar is the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor, the Purple Heart, and five Air Medals for her service as an Air National Guard HH-60 Pave Hawk Combat Search and Rescue Pilot on three deployments in Afghanistan and many domestic civil humanitarian missions. When her aircraft was shot down in Afghanistan, she sustained back injuries that prevented her continued service as a pilot. The existing Ground Combat Exclusion Policy that prohibited women from serving in ground combat roles meant she could not apply for re-designation as a special tactics officer where her skills and experience could best support the mission. In 2012, she was the lead plaintiff against the Secretary of Defense in a case to abolish the Ground Combat Exclusion Policy and enhance military effectiveness. The policy was repealed in 2013. MJ's journey began in Air Force ROTC with a follow-on Air Force commission. After she was sexually assaulted by her Flight Surgeon during a qualifying flight physical, and witnessed his subsequent impunity, she made the difficult decision to leave active duty and pursue her dream of ‘becoming Han Solo' through the Air National Guard. In this interview we talk about why she felt it was important to share her story to educate the public, politicians, and policy makers on both the achievements and contributions of women in combat operations, and the challenges they face in navigating military careers from negative individual and institutional biases. Max talks with John Kinard of AeroLuxe Aviation, based in Nashville, which operates a fleet of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, including R44 and R22 helicopters. Following Hurricane Helene, the company became involved in relief efforts after seeing the devastation in North Carolina. John contacted the Ashville, NC EOC, and was told that help wasn't needed. Nonetheless, AeroLux decided to fly three R44 helicopters to the disaster area to see how them might assist. The helicopters operated out of a base at a Harley-Davidson dealership in Asheville, which had been converted into a command center. Immediately after arriving, the team began delivering supplies to isolated communities cut off by flooding and landslides. They navigated challenging mountainous terrain, landing directly in confined areas to deliver food, water, and medical supplies. The team also saw firsthand the extensive damage, including multimillion-dollar homes washed away by floods. Despite hot, difficult conditions, AeroLuxe flew daily missions, carrying food and supplies. The company spent five days flying relief missions, and John emphasized the satisfaction of helping people in need. AeroLuxe is already looking at ways they may help this week with Hurricane Milton in Florida. If you're getting value from this show, please support the show via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or Patreon. We're back in the studio again with some more of the TFB staff talking about their top picks for guns. Last week we kept things pretty restrictive, with only three guns. However, given that we also restricted people to "just those three guns for the rest of your life" it felt a little bit too predictable because most people in that type of situation would almost always default to "AR, Semi-Auto Pistol, Shotgun." With our two new guests TFB writers Doug E and Patrik O, this week, we're giving them two extra guns they can add to their forever collection, which should spice things up a bit. Today we'll hear the differing opinions on what 5 guns they'd buy if money wasn't an issue, and those 5 guns were the only ones they could have in their collection for the rest of their lives. It's a ridiculous question, yes, but also a fun one at that. So sit back, relax, and enjoy as Patrik O and Doug E discuss their "minimalist" 5 gun collection they'd own for the rest of their lives if money wasn't an issue.

Mike tried to escape Scientology's undue influence when he was 15. As punishment for trying to escape, he was isolated, sleep-deprived, and forced to do hard labor for over a year and a half. Mike reflects that he felt like a prisoner during this time. Mike finally escaped Scientology at age 27 and joined the military. He had little education and no credit history. Despite these odds, he was inspired by his family's previous military service and flourished in the Army. Mike became a helicopter pilot and instructor. Mike served five combat tours between Iraq and Afghanistan in his nearly 20 years of service. Mike's parents joined Scientology when he was seven. Later he says he was made to join the Sea Organization or “Sea Org,” a paramilitary section of Scientology. Mike's mom, Rosemary, worked directly for one of Scientology's top executives, Ronnie Miscavige Jr., older brother of the organization's leader, David Miscavige. Mike reflects that the military was less controlling than Scientology for him. Later, Mike rescued his mother from the cult. An utterly fascinating story. In Walt's own words:Since I was five, I wanted to fly helicopters. So I did. I was in the U.S. Navy for 23 years as a designated helicopter pilot. Before I retired from the Navy, I had assumed that I would fly for the rest of my life (helicopters or other) - it was my passion and it was what I was trained to do. But I felt a nudge from the universe; a new calling. It happens that in my last four years in the Navy, I was assigned as a professor teaching leadership at the University of Colorado. I became fascinated with leadership and learned how much I had to learn. Through that work, I realized that I felt called to serve others in their personal leadership journeys. So when I retired, I decided to leave aviation in my past, and work in leadership development. First, in the corporate setting as an in-house facilitator, and then as an independent coach. For me, the journey since retirement has been characterized by powerful emotional, spiritual, somatic and cognitive growth. I feel so fortunate to be able to serve others in their personal leadership journeys!Learn more at:https://tliftcoaching.com/ Please leave a review or send us a Voice note letting us know what you enjoyed at:Back2Basics reconnecting to the essence of YOU (podpage.com)Follow us on IG and FB @Back2BasicsPodcast
Ryan Fugit is pretty good at seeing the bigger picture. Nowadays, he's a podcast host - hosting 'Combat Stories,' a weekly interview series dedicated to sharing war stories from some truly incredible veteran warriors - but before podcasting, he was a veteran himself, having served over seven years as an Army AH-64 Apache Helicopter pilot in Afghanistan in the post-9/11 era. After that, he spent eight years at the CIA (or 'The Agency', as it's known internally), supporting warfighters indirectly from a different kind of foxhole. When it comes to providing additional support, whether it's in the air above a battlefield or inside the very technology that keeps us safe, it's safe to say that Ryan knows just how valuable those moment-to-moment decisions can be. The smallest move, the slightest tilt, and suddenly, everything could come tumbling down.
