How was the Bible interpreted during the first centuries of the Christian faith? In this episode, which is part of our larger series on second-century Christianity, we will briefly outline some of the interpretive strategies used by early marginalized Christian thinkers known as the Gnostics. In this episode, we briefly mention that the Gnostics relied heavily upon the allegory of the cave taken from Plato’s Republic. This metaphor of the cave gave the Gnostic Christians the ability to find in the gospel some of their distinct ideas about the true identity of human beings, the salvation of the soul and the purpose of the creation of the cosmos. Join us this week as we review some of the chief characteristics of biblical interpretation in the Gnostic systems. What are some of the characteristics of Catholic interpretations of the Bible? In this episode we briefly discuss the phenomenon of balancing tensions. One of the hallmark characteristics of Catholic theology is its attempt to balance tensions. This approach can be best summarized in the phrase “both and”. One of the salient characteristics of the ways in which Catholic interpreters have approached the text of Scripture is an attempt to integrate seemingly opposing ideas. Hence, our description of this approach as balancing the tensions. This tension balancing can be seen, for example, in the ways in which Augustine handled the question of salvation by faith and works. Rather than opt for salvation by faith alone or salvation by works alone, Augustine throughout his life tried to balance the tension of affirming salvation by faith and salvation by good works. Join us this week as we discuss the salient characteristic of historic Catholic approaches to the Bible. Who were the apologists of the early church? In this brief episode, we provide an overview as the meaning of the term apologist, noting that it designates someone who makes a defense on behalf of another, usually in a court of law. In the early church, the apostles performed an apologetic role on behalf of Christianity, defending the religion and its central claims about its founder. When historians use the term “apologists” in writing about the history of Christianity, however, they are referring not to the apostles but rather to second-century Christian thinkers such as Justin Martyr, Athenagoras and others. These Christian thinkers defended the faith from attacks and criticisms leveled against the religion by their neighbors, political leaders and pagan intellectuals. Join us this week as we briefly review who the apologists were and what their work accomplished. In this brief episode we talk about the nature of textual criticism. First and foremost, we dispel the notion that textual criticism is equivalent to being hostile toward the text of Scripture. Instead, textual criticism refers to the attempt to reconstruct, to the best of our ability, the text of Scripture according to its earliest form. We note that textual criticism involves numerous trips to foreign libraries, the acquisition of facsimiles and other such measures in order to determine what the text the Bible looked like through the centuries across the Roman world. Textual criticism, moreover, is essential for establishing the wording of the texts not only for the study of the Bible but for any ancient or early modern text for that matter. Join us this week as we briefly review this important area within the academic study of the Bible. Which principles should Catholics use when attempting to understand the meaning of the Bible? In this episode, we talk at length about the analogy of faith, a principle which states that individual statements of Scripture should be understood within the larger structure of Catholic beliefs, which are conveniently synthesized in the Nicean-Constantinopolitan creed. We discuss how this principle has characterized the way that famous Catholic bishops, doctors and saints of the church have understood the Bible’s meaning. For many of these thinkers within the Catholic heritage, the Church’s faith established a continual reference point for understanding the meaning of difficult statements in the Bible. At the heart of this conviction was the belief that the same God who led the authors of Scripture to write the text of the individual books of the Bible was the same God who led the church in defiance faith over the centuries. Join us this week as we discuss the analogy of faith as one of the Catholic approach is to interpreting Scripture. The recent critics of Pope Francis have expanded their criticisms of the pontiff to the entirety of the faithful. They have begun to argue that the Catholic laity en masse has been duped by the clergy from the local parish priest to the pontiff himself. In making this decision, these critics of Pope Francis again reveal that they have far more in common with the early Gnostic critics of the Catholic Church than they with their contemporaries and opponents, the early church Fathers. In this episode, we briefly review some of the more recent assessments on the deception of the faithful, as argued by the English-speaking critics of Pope Francis. All Catholics should be fully aware of certain trends throughout church history. In this regard, the critics of Francis return to a classical line of argumentation leveled by many opponents of the Catholic faith not only from the early church but through the Middle Ages and unto the present day. Paul's words are often used to defend a belief in salvation by faith alone. Protestant Christians have often referred to Paul's statements in Romans 3:28 and Galatians 2:16 as evidence for this teaching? But did Paul really teach salvation by faith alone? In this episode, we continue our discussion of those statements in Paul's Epistles which are often neglected by Protestant Christians. We will be talking about Romans 2:13, a passage which affirms that God will justify Christians by their works of obedience to the moral law. Join us this week as we continue our discussion of those neglected passages in Paul's Epistles. One of the most striking things about the Council of Trent is how little people know about the council but have strong opinions about it. In this episode, we talk about the fact that most people’s knowledge about the Council of Trent comes through word-of-mouth. In contradistinction to this shallow understanding of Trent’s actual statements, the actual documents produced by the Council of Trent are enormous. In this episode, we encourage our listeners to take the time to read the translated documents of the Council of Trent. Using those translations as a starting point, we argue, is an excellent place to begin one’s study of this extremely important council in the history of the Catholic Church. Join us this week as we talk about the Council of Trent and the importance of studying its decrees in their historical context. What are some of the best tools for figuring out dates and places in Christian history? In this brief episode we talk about an important tool for the study of our Catholic faith, namely, the Atlas of Christian History, which was published by Dr. Tim Dowley. Church history is full of names, dates and places. How does one even begin to undertake this Herculean task? Every craftsman needs tools and some of the best tools for students of church history come in the form of atlases. An atlas is a book containing an entire series of maps about the world, a given region or a particular time in human history. The Atlas of Christian History will help students of church history orient themselves toward the geographic locations were many important events, gatherings and decisions were rendered. This atlas contains scores of maps from nearly 21 centuries of Christian history. Join us in this episode as we briefly discuss some of the benefits of using this resource when studying the history of Christianity. When was the Muratorian Canon written? A good number of scholars posit that this fragmentary list of New Testament books was written either in the second half the second century or sometime in the fourth. In this episode, we take a quick second to briefly review a recent claim made by a popular scholar on the history of the canon of Scripture concerning the dating of the Muratorian Canon. We note that contrary to this scholar’s claim, there exists in the academy fierce debate about the precise dating of this important fragment. In fact, the history of research on the Muratorian Canon is characterized far more by intense debate than anything else. For this reason, I encourage any student of the canon to take much caution before easily accepting any proposed date for its composition. Join us this week as we discuss this important early Christian witness to the New Testament canon. One of the important reasons to study one’s faith for oneself is to overcome the limited presentations of others. In this episode we talk about why it is important to take the time to look into the records of one’s faith so as to verify the claims of others. Oftentimes, opponents of Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular like to offer limited presentations of the evidence so as to bolster their case. In light of this fact, it is critical for Catholics to know their heritage in order to respond appropriately. Join us as we continue to probe the reasons for studying the Catholic faith for yourself. What is an up to date and affordable resource for the study of the Catholic heritage? The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church has been for many years my go to resource when studying the vast history of the Christian tradition. The book is an excellent place to begin one’s investigation into the sources of the Catholic tradition. Catholic readers should note that the volume was assembled by many members of the Church of England. As a result, some of the entries skew toward Protestant perspectives or are oriented toward the larger narratives of the Protestant Reformation. Nevertheless, for the price and for the accessibility to first rate scholarship on many people, movements and doctrines in the history of the Christian tradition, one would be hard pressed to find a better resource. To obtain the most affordable and the most up to date version of this work, please use the following link: https://www.amazon.com/Dictionary-Christian-Church-F-Cross/dp/1598562509/. Note well, that the Catholic Heritage, LLC, makes no money if you purchase from this link. We offer this resource solely for the benefit of our listeners. What did Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli have to say about the Eucharist? In this episode, we discuss some of the major outcomes of the famous debate between Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli held in the city of Marburg (1529). We note that Luther was a fierce proponent of Christ’s real presence in the Eucharistic elements of bread and wine. Zwingli, however, was a staunch supporter of the symbolic nature of the Eucharist. This episode is part of our larger series on Protestant Agreements and Differences. The goal of these episode is to help Catholic Christians better understand what unites and divides Protestant Christians. The larger goal of this series is to help Catholics better understand that the differences between Protestant denominations touch the key beliefs of Protestantism as a whole, namely, salvation by faith alone and the sole authority of Scripture. Join us this week as we discuss how these two major thinkers in the early Reformation viewed the Eucharist and its bearing on salvation. What is the best way to address historical objections to Christianity as a whole and Catholicism in particular? In this episode we talk about the importance of asking important questions of the one posing the objection. We note that any worthwhile historical investigation into any question will take time. Usually, people who raise these types of questions have not taken the time to investigate the matter in the primary sources. Instead, they rely exclusively on secondary sources, that is, popular books, magazines or online videos. Join us this week as we begin this new series of addressing historical objections to Christianity. What are the Vatican II documents? In this episode, we briefly discuss the major translation of the Vatican II documents made by Austin Flannery OP in the years following the conclusion of the council (1962-1965). We note that this translation is not only affordable but also contains the most easily accessible collection of texts issued by the council. Join us this week as we discuss a very important resource for the study of the Catholic Heritage. How did Thomas Aquinas (ca. 1224-1275) study the Bible? In this episode, we provide a brief overview of the salient characteristics of Thomas Aquinas’ approach to the study of the biblical text. We note, among other things, that Aquinas read the Bible by adopting a distinctively Catholic approach, namely, a conversation with the long standing Eastern and Western tradition of biblical commentary and theological discussion. Thomas was never afraid to pursue answers to the Life Questions by engaging all the available resources at his disposal. Join us this week as we discuss how Aquinas studied the Bible and what contemporary students of the Catholic heritage can garner from his approach to the biblical text. Down through the centuries, Catholic authors have engaged in a long conversation over the Life Questions. An integral aspect to the ways Catholics have answered these questions was to tap into the efforts of previous generations of Catholic Christians who likewise engaged the Life Questions. Early catholic authors such as Origen, Augustine and Jerome made extensive use of earlier Catholic authors in their efforts to engage the records of the Christian tradition. They believed that the answers to the Life Questions were to be found in the Christian tradition and not apart from it. To determine the answers to these questions, they believed, the Catholic would do well to consult the labors of earlier Catholic thinkers. By building upon their efforts, correcting their mistakes and preserving their contributions, they maintained, the Catholic intellectual could come to a more precise understanding of the Christian faith. Join us this week as we discuss how Catholic authors drew upon earlier contributions. If God is omniscient and immutable (unchangeable), what then is the purpose of prayer? It would seem as if prayer would be rendered of little value, given that God knows everything and is incapable of changing in response to our prayers. In his lectures on Matthew 6:9-11, Thomas Aquinas discussed the question of God’s omniscience and immutability and the purpose of one’s prayer. Although prayer may seem to be rendered of little use in light of these two divine traits, Aquinas identifies five reasons why prayer is vital to the Catholic’s spiritual life. Join us this week as we discuss Aquinas’ thoughts on the purpose of prayer in light of God’s nature. How did Thomas Aquinas investigate the Life Questions? In this episode, we discuss Thomas’ approach to the study of God, formally known as theology. Aquinas was committed to the Anselmian method of fides quaerens intellectum (“faith seeking understanding”). Throughout his writings and his teaching, he used reason as a tool to better understand Christian revelation, expressed most notably in the pages of Scripture. Because of his use of faith and reason, Aquinas provides Catholic Christians a perennial model for engaging the Life Questions. Whether using the writings of his contemporary Scholastic colleagues or drawing upon the philosophical treatises of non-Christians such as Avicenna or Maimonides, Aquinas was committed to pursuing truth through faith and reason. Join us this week as discuss Aquinas’ approach and why his example continues to provide a model for engaging any and all truth claims. Monetary wealth, argued Bellarmine, can be a great temptation in the Christian life. In chapter 5 of his treatise The Art of Dying Well, Cardinal Robert Bellarmine maintains that the Christian should be especially vigilant in the use of their financial assets. The proper disposition toward wealth, he argues, is that of an administrator / steward and not master / owner. One of the great pitfalls in the spiritual life is to think that financial assets ultimately belong to oneself. For Bellarmine, this a great fallacy. One should perceive one’s assets, argued Bellarmine, as ultimately belonging to God. With this critical consideration, the cardinal argues that reason and Scripture teach that the Christian is first and foremost a steward of their financial assets. Because of this fact, the Christian must be responsible in the use of their financial assets. As stewards, they will one day render an account to the true owner of those assets, namely, God. Join us this week as we discuss in detail Cardinal Bellarmine’s understanding of the proper Christian disposition toward one’s financial resources. Recent English-speaking Catholic critics have adopted Gnostic approaches when evaluating the words and actions of Pope Francis and the bishops of the Catholic Church. In this episode, we talk about the use of radical skepticism and even hostility used by certain Catholic critics in their efforts to discredit the papacy of Pope Francis. Instead of finding truth within the episcopate, these critics point to themselves as the repositories of truth. They also assume that their understanding of the Catholic faith is indeed correct. Join us this week as we explain how this style of criticism resemble ancient Gnostic approaches toward the bishops of the Catholic Church. One of the important things Catholic Christians must understand is the differences of religious beliefs held among Protestant Christians. All too often and in various ways, Catholics are mistakenly led to think that Protestant Christians are united in their two core Reformation convictions concerning salvation by faith alone and the authority of Scripture alone. To gain a better understanding of Protestantism, however, it is imperative for Catholics to recognize the important differences between the various founders of the various Protestant Christian denominations and their later followers. In this episode, views concerning baptismal justification set forth by John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. Methodism was originally a seventeenth-century parachurch movement in the Church of England, which after Wesley’s death became a distinct Christian denomination in England. In this show, we discuss how John Wesley understood the relationship between baptism and the Christian’s right standing before God, a concept which falls under the category of justification. Join us this week as we draw critical distinctions between John Wesley and leaders of other Protestant denominations. Spiritual vigilance is one of the most important considerations for the Catholic Christian. Bellarmine seeks to equip Catholic Christians with an acute sense of the need for spiritual vigilance throughout the Christian life. Working from the text of Luke 12:35-37, Bellarmine seizes upon Jesus’ parable of staying spiritually alert for judgement day. At the core of Bellarmine’s spirituality is his belief that everyone being will render an account for their thoughts and deeds before God’s judgement. In light of this momentous reckoning which will befall every human being either at the moment of death or for those living near the end of human history, at Christ’s Second Coming, Bellarmine urges Catholic Christians to take seriously the need to make an examination of conscience, confess their sins and to make amends for the wrongs done. They need to be spiritually prepared to meet Christ the Judge. Join us this week as we discuss Bellarmine’s perspective on the importance of spiritual vigilance for the Christian life. Send them into thefeed(at)libsyn(dot)com! Some Elsie feedback about sending in your promos Leave your podcast name and URL when sending in your promos…or any communication for that matter! Make sure when you send in your show promo, your name and your show are prominently shown in the email, as well as a link back to your website or any other social media properties that you'd like to share with us. This makes it super easy for me to connect with you and PROMOTE you. I do my best to link back to you in as many I've been getting people that have been sending me promos that have no URL anywhere, no email signature and the email address that it comes from doesn't help PLUS the name they've named the promo in no way helps to tell me what the podcast is either. It would make my life easier if you could simply offer that information Libsyn Power Tips How to get two different Media players from your one libsyn account Rob has 2 media players on Podcast411 and today in iOS. If you go to Podcast411.com right now you will see a big player top center - with the artwork for Rich Eisens Podcast (at the time of this writing) - that is his show level player - it has in the artwork and it keeps up to date whenever he publishes a new episode. He doesn't do anything to update it. If you scroll down you will see the episode level players - those stay fixed per the episode they are assigned. How you get both is the following. First you set up the player you want for the episode level. You do that by checking out this support article. Get the size and type you want - then copy the embed code and paste to your site. Next - Set up the player you want for the per episode posts. And leave it set there. Then when you publish your next episode at the end after you hit publish you will get the embed code for just that episode - per the size / type you set up. But wherever you previously embedded the Show level player - it will continue to update to show the most recent episode. URL's To Use when Direct Linking Sometime on websites or twitter we will see people linking to their files but with the wrong URL. They will be using the URL - where their file redirects to. For example it may be - http://ec.libsyn.com/…. or http://hwcdn.libsyn.com…. Those are the wrong URL's to use - they are temp URL's - and can and WILL break in the future. The URL you want to use for direct links to your media files is http://traffic.libsyn.com/YOURSLUG/FILENAME If you check your links and it is not traffic after the http:// - you are doing it wrong. It also can effect your stats - as in not getting counted. The real issue is anything other than the traffic link is a temp URL - and will in the future break - not that it may break - it WILL BREAK. Will using your city's name in your podcast episode get you in trouble? Per Rob's email below: “Hi Rob, this evening I went to a community meeting in Inglewood I go to every month. They love the concept of my radio show. But the block club president suggests I should call the councilman in the city or speak to the city legal lawyer to find out if it's OK to use Inglewood in my title. Only word I know is registered is Realtor(r) what do you suggest I do to verify its OK. thank you for your time” Read this article. The second letter in the article sums it up nicely. In other words - just use Inglewood in your show's name. And if anyone gives you grief - send them the link above. Feed not updating in iTunes This next one is an issue regarding those using Feedburner and a problem with the Podcasts App. A Libsyn user was having problems when listeners tapped to download an episode in the Podcasts App - It streamed fine - but it would not download into the app. It would give an error and time out. We figured out it was not the Libsyn feed - as putting that in direct to the Podcasts App worked fine. It wound up being the person was using Smartcast and Stats for Feedburner. When they turned those items off - Then the downloads started up fine. So if you are using Feedburner - check your show in the Podcasts App and see if you can get it to download, if not make sure to deselect all the smartcast and stats options in Feedburner - which you really don't need anyway if you have Libsyn as your source feed. That issue would be for anyone using Feedburner regardless of where you host or what your source feed is - there is something going on with the Podcasts App - that does not like smartcast and stats options in Feedburner.
