bto#309 REFRESH – Nichts ist so wichtig für die Identität der GRÜNEN wie ihr letztlich hoch erfolgreicher Kampf gegen die Kernenergie. Deutschland ist als einziges Industrieland aus der Atomenergie ausgestiegen und versucht seither vergeblich, die entstandene Lücke durch Erneuerbare Energien zu ersetzen. Dennoch bleibt der Strom in Deutschland trotz der Ausgabe von mehreren hundert Milliarden Euro – wie viele es genau sind, lässt sich wegen fehlender Transparenz nicht genau beziffern – überdurchschnittlich dreckig und teuer. Ein in doppeltem Sinne zu teuer erkaufter Sieg. In den letzten 30 Jahren nahm die erzeugte Strommenge in Deutschland stetig zu und Strom konnte exportiert werden. In den Jahren 2023 und 2024 kehrte sich das Verhältnis um und Deutschland musste Strom importieren. Vor allem aus Frankreich wurde viel Strom bezogen – dem Atomstromland par excellence. Gleichzeitig blieben Braun- und Steinkohle mit zusammen 22 Prozent und Erdgas mit 16 Prozent Anteil am Energieträgermix unverzichtbare fossile Kohlendioxid-Emittenten.Nicht nur, dass der Energieverbrauch ein Wohlstandsindikator ist, die Verfügbarkeit von günstiger Energie ist vielmehr ein Standortfaktor für die Wirtschaft. Künftige Industrien werden durch KI und Automatisierung gekennzeichnet sein und mehr statt weniger Strom benötigen. Erneuerbare Energien allein werden diese Energiemengen niemals bereitstellen können – allein schon wegen ihrer fehlenden durchgängigen Verfügbarkeit und der auf absehbare Zeit nicht vorhandenen ausreichenden Speicherkapazitäten. Wenn Sonne und Wind abwesend sind, müssen Alternativen einspringen. Deshalb ist klar: Der Verzicht auf Kernenergie bedingt den Einsatz fossiler Brennstoffe wie Kohle, russischem Gas oder LNG aus dem ungeliebten Fracking. Damit haben die GRÜNEN letztlich dem Klima und der hiesigen Wirtschaft gleichermaßen massiv geschadet. In Wetzlar hat ein Blitzeinschlag einen Feuerwehreinsatz ausgelöst. Rund 30 Einsatzkräfte haben einen Kellerbrand gelöscht. In Ehringshausen sind in einem Gehege acht von zehn Damhirsche von einem Raubtier getötet worden. Das Wolfszentrum wertet jetzt DNA-Spuren und Fell-Proben aus, um zu gucken, ob es ein Wolfsangriff war. Mehr als 3.500 Menschen sind im Geburtshaus in Marburg zur Welt gekommen. Nach 30 Jahren sollen die Räume saniert werden, dafür hoffen die Hebammen auf Unterstützung.

Beth Cameron, Senior Advisor and Professor of the Practice at the Brown University Pandemic Center and a Senior Adviser and non-resident fellow at CSIS, hosts this inspiring July 14 conversation with Richard Hatchett, the CEO of CEPI, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations. Richard first came to Washington DC in the aftermath of 9/11 to create the U.S. Medical Reserve Corps. There was no looking back. He served in several administrations as a leading expert in bio preparedness and left government to lead CEPI at its creation in 2017, its mission to support the accelerated development of vaccines and other countermeasures against future biothreats. With the Covid-19 pandemic, health security has become an enduring global concern, with now a fierce focus on access to new technology, and regional manufacturing capabilities. “You have to design your programs with your access goal in mind from the very beginning,”  Preparedness is “not a static achievement.” It is “a dynamic state of readiness” that evolves through practice – “train, train, train.”  CEPI's signature big idea is the 100 Day Mission, in which vaccine designs and delivery platforms are ready to spring into action when new biothreats appear.  Cuts in finances and programs by the Trump administration and others will compromise disease surveillance, detection and containment measures, increasing the risks to Americans and beyond.  Cuts are also forcing reflection, the setting of priorities, and finding ways to finance and achieve better and more efficient outcomes. The remarkable speed in which a vaccine was introduced during the Marburg outbreak in Rwanda in September 2024 rested not on luck. It built on CEPI's pre-existing partnerships with the Rwanda government and several other institutions, including WHO and key US agencies.  CEPI has invested since 2017 in over $1 billion in the US biotech sector, and has just concluded an agreement to work with DOD.

Wie passiert Veränderung in Kirche und was hat Verlernendamit zu tun? In dieser Sonderfolge beschäftigen sich Katharina Haubold und Daniel Wegner mit dem Thema „Verlernen, um zu lernen“. Die Podcast-Folge ist im Rahmen des EKM-Gemeindekongresses in Erfurt entstanden und diskutiert daher auch, Erfahrungen aus den Erprobungsräumen in Kirche. For one, Ebola is typically deadlier (especially Zaire Ebola Virus). We are going through the short history of the disease (compared to say, Smallpox) and the first few cases seen in humans. Marburg is relatively new as a virus among humans (compared to others like smallpox or rabies), but it is a monster. It is believed to have originated in Uganda in Africa, perhaps originally transmitted via fruit bats. The world came to know about it, however, during a 1967 outbreak in Germany, brought there by infected monkeys being used at a vaccine company there. It typically starts with a throbbing headache and muscle pains, then soon causes massive clotting then hemorrhaging throughout the body. Obviously the symptoms of such are horrid, and death typically occurs within a few weeks. With an average death rate at 25% (higher in some outbreaks), it has been devastating when outbreaks occur. In this new episode of the mini-series on documentation, we continue the conversation on documentation and archiving practices together with Eva Willems and Mina Ibrahim. Eva Willems is a post-doctoral researcher at the History Department and the Department of Conflict and Development Studies of Ghent University. She examines how peasant militias in Peru use archives to organize life amid conflict. Mina Ibrahim is a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Conflict Studies at the University of Marburg and a visiting professor at the Department of Languages and Cultures at Ghent University. He builds archives to hold on to family memories and cope with ongoing displacement. In the conversation with Kim Baudewijns, Eva and Mina reflect on how the distinction between documentationand archiving practices is informed by shifting temporalities. Documentation, as Eva demonstrates, “has a very pragmatic aspect of organizing the war, of organizing military actions, of organizing social cohesion. But archiving has this aspect of organizing the documentation in a way that it can be preserved for the future.”Another key issue emerging from the conversation is the importance of considering a more encompassing view onarchiving practices that goes beyond conceiving archives as collection linked to a state. As Mina emphasises, all types of archiving or archival practices – such as family photos, community collections, personal archives – “can intersect with the state, but they should not always be subject to state institutions.”  Moving beyond the archives, we also need to think of justice as broader than judicial or state-led initiatives and consider shifting meanings of justice. In the context of Peru, Eva reflects on the difficulty actors such as armed groups face in imagining a post-conflict period in which legal justice or accountability can be pursued. Mina then foregrounds how in the Syrian context universal jurisdiction cases in Europe oninternational crimes have highlighted the shifting meanings of justice and the continued importance of archives. He explains how the same activists who compiled evidence for criminal justice were often also critical of the legalprocess, which led them to develop new ideas about why archiving is important.

Mai 1925 nun auch die Errichtung eines Nationaldenkmals, das im ostpreußischen Tannenberg an die dortige, mit Hindenburgs Name verbundene siegreiche Schlacht vom August 1914 gegen die russischen Truppen erinnern sollte. Tatsächlich sollte der hier besprochene Entwurf in ähnlicher Form bis 1927 realisiert und zu einem Monument deutschen Größenwahns werden. Um das Denkmal nicht in die Hände der Roten Armee fallen zu lassen, ließ Hitler die gigantomane Anlage samt der dort 1934 angelegten Hindenburg-Gruft im Januar 1945 sprengen. Während die Gebeine des Generalfeldmarschalls und seiner Frau ins hessische Marburg überführt werden konnten, gelangten die baulichen Überreste nach Warschau und fanden dort Eingang in das Gebäude des Zentralkomitees der Vereinigten Polnischen Arbeiterpartei. Brigitte Franzen studierte Kunstgeschichte, Europäische Ethnologie, Germanistik und Soziologie an den Universitäten in Karlsruhe, Wien und Marburg an der Lahn und promovierte im Jahr 2000 über das Verhältnis von Natur und Kunst am Beispiel von Künstlergärten. Ihr erstes Buch veröffentlichte sie 1993. Es thematisierte die Architekturausstellungen des Neuen Bauens der 1920er Jahre. Das Buch »Die vierte Natur« erschien im Jahr 2000 im Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König und war schnell vergriffen. Die Themen Landschaftstheorie, öffentlicher Raum, Architektur und Ideengeschichte der Natur tauchen immer wieder in ihrem wissenschaftlichen und kuratorischen Wirken auf. Neben zahlreichen Lehrtätigkeiten betreute Brigitte Franzen seit 1993 rund 100 Ausstellungsprojekte. Von 2004 bis 2008 arbeitete sie als Kuratorin für Gegenwartskunst am Westfälischen Landesmuseum in Münster und kuratierte von 2004 bis 2007 die skulptur projekte münster 07. Von 2009 bis 2015 war Brigitte Franzen Direktorin des Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst in Aachen. 2015 wurde sie Alleinvorstand und Geschäftsführerin der Peter und Irene Ludwig Stiftung mit weltweit 28 Partnermuseen zu denen beispielsweise das Museum Ludwig, das Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum und die Museen für asiatische und für angewandte Kunst in Köln gehören, ebenso wie das mumok in Wien, das Ludwig Muzéum in Budapest und das museum für Islamische Kunst in Berlin. Ihre kuratorische Arbeit begreift sie als »forschendes Kuratieren«: 2019 hatte sie als Kuratorin der Triennale in Fellbach ihr Augenmerk auf die anthropologische Dimension der Kunst und ihrer Entstehung gelegt – in ihrem dort geschaffenen »Museum der Neugier« wurden zahlreiche zeitgenössische Positionen in Beziehung zu 40.000 Jahre alten frühzeitlichen Skulpturenfunden gesetzt. 2021/22 kuratierte sie im Gropius Bau Berlin die Ausstellung »The Cool and the Cold«, eine erstmalige Gegenüberstellung US-amerikanischer und sowjetischer Malerei zur Zeit des Kalten Krieges. Seit Oktober 2020 verantwortete Franzen für vier Jahre das Senckenberg Naturmuseum Frankfurt. Unter Ihrer Ägide wurden 19 Ausstellungen durchgeführt. Die Besuchszahlen wurden im Vergleich zur Vor-Corona-Zeit um 13 % auf 460.000 gesteigert. Das Museum konnte sich durch kooperative Projekte, wie »Wälder. Von der Romantik bis in die Zukunft« und partizipative Formate wie die »AHA?! Forschungswerkstatt« neue Besucherschichten erschließen. Franzen legte außerdem ihr Augenmerk auf die strukturelle Entwicklung des Hauses, vom neuen Shop, über die Renovierung wichtiger Museumsareale und Bestände (z.B. die berühmte Anakonda) bis hin zur Einführung sogenannter »Freiräume«, neuer Aufenthaltszonen im Museum. This was a period of transition for Britain, as royal authority gave way to cabinet government, and as the country began to exercise increased influence upon the world stage. It was a reign that witnessed the trauma of the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion, saw Britain fighting Spain as part of the Quadruple Alliance, and in which Britain confronted the rise of Russia under Peter the Great.  There has been relatively little new detailed work on this subject since Hatton's biography of George I appeared in 1978, and that book, while impressive, devoted relatively little attention to the domestic political dimension of foreign policy. In contrast, Black links diplomacy to domestic politics to show that foreign policy was a key aspect of government as well as the leading battleground both for domestic politics and for ministerial rivalries. As a result he demonstrates how party identities in foreign policy were not marginal, to either policy or party, but, instead, central to both. The research is based upon a wealth of both British and foreign archive material, including State Papers Domestic, Scotland, Ireland and Regencies, as well as Foreign. Extensive use is also made of parliamentary and ministerial papers, as well as the private papers of numerous diplomats. Foreign archives consulted include papers from Hanover, Osnabruck, Darmstadt, Marburg, Munich, Paris, The Hague, Vienna and Turin.
