You can spend your whole life fighting to be the next big star and still end up with nothing. Or you can double down on whatever makes you weirdly uniquely yourself, like comedian, musician and co-creator of Adult Swim's Metalocalypse and Home Movies Brendon Small did, and there's a decent chance it might resonate enough with people that you build a dedicated following around the world. Brian Smith of Dynamite In The Brain is on the couch to make sense of this melange of stand-up comedy and rudimentary animation, conceived of a meeting between educational software developer Tom Snyder and the comedian's comedian Jonathan Katz. Assembled in a charmingly rough & ready manner it gave an auspicious start to such comedy & cartoon greats as H. Jon Benjamin and Loren Bouchard, but are we still crazy about its unique style 25 years later? Recording studio secrets, the wonders of Squigglevision and the elegant parallels with modern comedy podcasting get the full diagnosis, for which we prescribe a hearty Post-Podcast Repaste!Listen up!
One Saturday Morning was known for Doug, Pepper Ann, and Recess, but Science Court is a forgotten gem with humor straight from Dr. Katz. Here the story of how it got to Disney in the 90s through the eyes of creator Tom Snyder.

Today's Guest: Jonathan Katz, comedian, "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist" Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of long-suffering psychotherapy patients who really need to switch to doctors whose lobbies are not in Squigglevision… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Order from Amazon.com by clicking the DVD above! Jonathan Katz is neither a doctor nor a cartoon. But he has been known to be one entertaining funnyman. His old show on Comedy Central, “Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist,” was perhaps best known for two elements during its six-year run: its squiggly animation and the remarkable list of guests who sat on Dr. Katz’s couch, including Ray Romano, Conan O’Brien, Jon Stewart and Louis C.K. Now Katz is back with a new animated show, “Explosion Bus.” Like “Dr. Katz,” “Explosion Bus” was created by Tom Snyder. The new show co-stars comedian Tom Leopold, whose writing credits including “Seinfeld” and “Cheers.” JONATHAN KATZ audio excerpt: "Louis C.K.'s act has changed so much. He got older; he got bolder. Some of my favorite stuff he does is about the Catholic church, which a young kid wouldn't do." Order 'Caffeinated' by Jonathan Katz, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the CD cover above! So what is “Explosion Bus”? I have to admit I’m having a hard time figuring that out myself. I’ve watched several first season episodes and had a sneak peak at excerpts from season two. Like “Dr. Katz,” it is a model of subtlety and irony. “Explosion Bus” seems to satirizes the reality TV conceit of the moment found in “America’s Got Talent,” “The Voice” and “American Idol” that everyone has talent and could potentially be famous. But it goes in a lot of different directions from there, including being a reality show within a reality show—and one with real viewer submissions. And fans from season one will notice a change in animation style in season two. Check him out in animated form at ExplosionBus.com or on YouTube. Meanwhile, the doctor is in and I’m hoping he can make sense of it all for me. We're talkin' about Bob's Burgers on Jingle Friends! What will they do when a man turns out to be CRAZY?! Will WE go crazy?!?!?!! Topics this week include: Bart Simpson the little Dennis the Menace-like boy, butt-pinching kids, snappin’ bra straps, How Naked Can I Get in Public, the fun of dry erase boards, kids with jobs, Squigglevision, bad Netflix summaries, quirky vibrators, and sex with robots. We. Love. YOU.
On today's episode I talk to Peabody-award winning writer and animator Tom Snyder. Tom is a writer and director well known in the world of animation for creating the animation technique known as Squigglevision. His first Squigglevision success came with the Emmy winning show, Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, which aired on Comedy Central. Tom later founded Soup 2 Nuts, an award-winning animation studio that produced a series of critically acclaimed shows, including Home Movies and Science Court. Tom continued his collaboration with Jonathan Katz with their show Explosion Bus, and currently, Tom has written the book, music and lyrics for an audio musical called Is Anyone All Right?, which was released by Audible. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
We are joined by a pioneer of animation this week as we welcome Tom Snyder, co-creator of the hit Comedy Central cartoon 'Dr. Katz Professional Therapist', to the show. Tom also created the very first 'Adult Swim' cartoon 'Home Movies', and the ABC edjucational cartoon 'Science Court'. Each show was animated using SquiggleVision, an animation style Tom himself invented. He tells us about how he got his start in writing and animation, his day making educational software, and even how he influenced some of the lyrics to The Beatles 'Come Together'. We had an amazing time talking with Tom and you'll have an amazing time listening to us as we do. So pour a glass or two of wine, settle into the couch and get ready for a great episode! @ThomasFFSnyder @CannedAirPod ExplosionBus.com CannedAirPodcast.com
Steve Cooper talks with writer/musician/producer Tom Snyder. Tom is the creator of Squigglevision, the animation style made famous by Comedy Central's cult classic series Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist, which he created with Jonathan Katz. He was the executive producer of Home Movies, the first program to air on Adult Swim and one of IGN's Top 100 Animated Series, BET's Hey Monie! and ABC's Saturday morning entertainment cartoon Science Court. He has won Peabody, PGA and Cable Ace Awards for his animated programs. He also composed the music for many of these projects. Currently he just released an audio book Is Anyone All Right? which defies categorization a bit. It's the studio recording of a musical stage comedy written and scored by him and narrated and performed by multiple voice actors. It's very sweet and well-written. Much of its charm comes from big-hearted characters and the overly detailed/subtle stage direction he takes comedic advantage of in this format.

Join Lily, Shawn, and Scott as they break down the first episode of the wonderfully great FOX animated series: Bob's Burgers! Listen as they trace back the history of Loren Bouchard's work in animation with Jon Benjamin, going all the way back to the hilarity of Home Movies, and the delightful "Squigglevision" classic: Dr. Katz. They'll also discuss the lost character of Dan and how the now beloved Belchers were originally intended to be a family of cannibals! (Yes, really!) Also, they'll attempt to come up with some puntastic burger recipes of their own. Don't taste me, bro!
