In the third of our 'Reflection Series', host Matt Phillips is joined by Sarah Jones & Sal Martin of The ST School and Hands On Hub, who reflect on Ep.214 ‘What Values Make A Professional Therapist?' recorded back in September 2024 with guest Martin Christensen.  Martin Christensen, a Norwegian physiotherapist best known for his podcast "Friday Physio Confessions", focuses on the human aspect of healthcare. He emphasizes the importance of building a genuine relationship between patients & healthcare providers, acknowledging that mistakes are a natural part of the human experience. In Ep.214 of the Sports Therapy Association podcast, recorded in September 2024, Martin spoke about the need for open communication, how a strong, authentic rapport can significantly enhance patient care and outcomes. He believes that this rapport can often be hindered by constraints created by the notion of 'being professional', an abstract set of values & principles that take the 'human' out of healthcare.    Sarah and Sal reflect on Martin's past episode, exploring themes of professionalism, authenticity, and communication in the context of soft tissue therapy. Together they delve into the complexities of maintaining a therapeutic alliance while reflecting on client interactions, what it means to be professional, and adapting to individual client needs.  Chapter Markers 00:00:00 - Welcome To the Sports Therapy Association Podcast 00:03:07 - Meet the Guests: Sarah Jones and Sal Martin 00:06:49 - Reflecting on Professional Values 00:10:27 - Navigating Imposter Syndrome 00:18:51 - The Role of Dress in Professionalism 00:22:32 - Language and Therapeutic Alliance 00:27:43 - Humor in Therapy: An Unprofessional Story 00:38:47 - Advice for New Therapists Useful Links Ep.214 ‘What Values Make A Professional Therapist?' with Martin Christensen  Friday Physio Confessions Podcast Website Martin Christensen on Twitter (X): @Martin_Nekkolai Sarah Jones website: affinitybodyworks.co.uk Sal Martin website: massagemotion.co.uk Would YOU like to be a 'Reflection' guest on the podcast? In recent years, as our culture has embraced therapy more widely, depictions of the practice have proliferated on screen. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz trace the archetype from the silent, scribbling analysts of Woody Allen's œuvre and the iconic Dr. Melfi of “The Sopranos” to newer portrayals in shows such as “Shrinking,” on Apple TV+, and Showtime's “Couples Therapy,” now in its fourth season. The star of “Couples Therapy” is Orna Guralnik, whose sessions with real-life couples show how these tools can lead to breakthroughs—or, in some cases, enable bad behavior. Since the series débuted, mental-health awareness has only grown, and the rise of therapists on social media has put psychoanalytic language and constructs into the hands of a much broader audience. Is the therapy boom making us better? “There's a way in which jargon or concepts when boiled down can be used to categorize both ourselves and others,” says Schwartz. “Maybe what I'm asking for is a reinvigoration of the idea of therapy—not to close down meaning, but to open up meaning.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“The Sopranos” (1999-2007)“Couples Therapy” (2019-)“The Therapist Remaking Our Love Lives on TV,” by Alexandra Schwartz (The New Yorker)“The Rise of Therapy-Speak,” by Katy Waldman (The New Yorker)“Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist” (1995-2002)“The Critic” (1994-95)“Annie Hall” (1977)“The Case Against the Trauma Plot,” by Parul Seghal (The New Yorker)“Shrinking” (2023-)“Ted Lasso” (2020-23)The Cut's Overanalyzed series“21 Ways to Break Up with Your Therapist,” by Alyssa Shelasky (The Cut)New episodes drop every Thursday. A much more important demonstration of our principles lies before us in our respective homes, occupations, and affairs.ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 19It's usually pretty easy for me to be pleasant to the people in an A.A. setting. It's often not so hard to spread glad tidings to my old and new friends in the program. At home or at work, though, it can be a different story. It is in situations arising in both of those areas that the little day-to-day frustrations are most evident, and where it can be tough to smile or reach out with a kind word or an attentive ear. We've all had those times when we feel crushed and exhausted by emotionally draining times. And in those times, we might seek professional help from a therapist. But have you ever wondered how therapists process their internal struggles? How do they help solve another person's problems when they're fighting their own battles simultaneously?Dr. Cynthia Chen, my guest for today's episode, comes out openly about dealing with one of the most challenging times of her life: losing her elder brother to lung cancer and how she's chosen to process the various emotions that came with it. She shares how she managed her work – sometimes, taking some time off work and sometimes, immersing herself in it to stop her mind from wandering – to let her mind feel and heal. A loss as significant as that could shake your whole world; Cynthia goes back in time to reveal how she privately processed her feelings. In this episode, Cynthia narrates her journey in life so far: the experience growing up in a Chinese household, pursuing a doctorate in psychology, her approach to the work she does, and dealing with the challenges that have come her way in life. Our discussion gets deep into being comfortable with your emotions – both positive and negative, emotional regulation, resilience, and revival. Listen in!Episode Lessons:Finding a balance between how much to reveal and not reveal about yourself to your clients: While giving away too much could feel like a risk, being extremely private could also be very draining. The processing of grief looks different for everyone. It all comes down to being comfortable around even your most negative emotions.Emotional regulation isn't about regulating your emotions as much as it is about regulating your reaction to those emotions.ABOUT DR. CYNTHIA CHENDr. Chen's experience in education, pediatric hospitals, and mental health settings spans over 20 years. The real challenge comes when we face the challenges of daily life. BEGIN WHERE YOU AREWe feel that the elimination of our drinking is but a beginning. Welcome to Episode 1 of Season 5 of the The PCOS Revolution podcast: Easing Stress & Anxiety With Mindfulness Hi everyone and welcome back to the first episode of Season 5 today! I've invited two very special guests on our show today to speak about how you can take control of your stress using a few simple techniques. Mindfulness and hypnosis have been successfully used to help reduce anxiety when faced with infertility, PCOS and endometriosis. I wanted to give you a few tips since this is something we ask our patients at Florida Complete Wellness to try both during their acupuncture treatments and at home when preparing for an upcoming medicated cycle or just trying to get their stress levels under control. Some of you might know Sara Clark who's a guest we've had on my podcast twice already and along with hosting her own podcast Get Pregnant Naturally, She is the author of Fabulously Fertile – Supercharge your Fertility Naturally, The Fabulously Fertile Cookbook and Fertility Preparation Program. She is also the founder of her Signature Fertility Coaching Program, which includes functional lab testing and supports couples to make diet and lifestyle changes that dramatically improve the chances of a healthy pregnancy and baby! Amira Posner is a Professional Therapist who developed and now facilitates the Mind-Body Fertility Group and Fab Fertile Mindfulness Fertility Series. Now just a warning if you're listening to this podcast in your car: Amira walks us through a special guided hypnosis session which you don't want to do while driving or operating heavy machinery! I would suggest placing the podcast on hold towards the end and pressing play when you're in a quiet spot you can really sink into for the next few minutes. So I really hope this episode leaves you more centered and grounded and if you'd like to explore Sarah and Amira's Mindfulness Fertility Series, I would encourage you to connect with them in the links I've provided above. Thanks for Tuning In! Thanks so much for being with us this week. Have some feedback you'd like to share? You may be surprised to know that approximately 1 million expectant mothers suffer a pregnancy loss every year just in the United States alone. 1 out of 4 pregnancies end prematurely in miscarriage, stillbirth or tubal pregnancy. Why do some people bounce back after a tragic loss when others don't? What is it that empowers the to keep moving forward through grief with a sense of hope? Pam Vredevelt, Love and Loss Expert, Professional Therapist, and best selling author, wrestled with these questions after losing her first baby half way to term, and years later, her sixteen year old son following a car accident. This is something that touches close to home for me. We lost two babies in between our daughter and son. I never realized how common miscarriages are until we went through that. It is a devastating loss. Both for a mother and a father. So my hope for today's show is to give hope and comfort to those of you that have experienced a loss like this and also to give wisdom and understanding to those who haven't in case someone you love goes through this. Pam and I discuss: * Our personal stories of loss. * The importance of sharing our pain with others that we trust. * Why mothers feel shame when they lose a baby during pregnancy. * The role that facing our loss plays in healing our heart. * What we can do to work through our grief. * The moment when I told my children they have siblings in Heaven. ------------ Love the show? Tom is a writer and director well known in the world of animation for creating the animation technique known as Squigglevision. His first Squigglevision success came with the Emmy winning show, Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, which aired on Comedy Central. Tom later founded Soup 2 Nuts, an award-winning animation studio that produced a series of critically acclaimed shows, including Home Movies and Science Court. Tom continued his collaboration with Jonathan Katz with their show Explosion Bus, and currently, Tom has written the book, music and lyrics for an audio musical called Is Anyone All Right?, which was released by Audible. A divorced psychologist tries to help his patients, some of them famous, cope with their life traumas while sharing his home with aimless adult son Ben, who only lives to make passes at Dr. Katz's sarcastic receptionist, Laura. The show was animated in a style, called Squigglevision, invented by the show's co-creator, Tom Snyder. This animated TV uses contemporary stand up comedians to appear as the patients of Dr. Katz, professional therapist. There are a few well known actors thrown in too. With apologies to Bob Newhart and others, my favorite TV shrink will always be Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. A lot of the best comics of our era tried out their routines—and worked out their issues—on Dr. Katz's couch, and the effect was certainly therapeutic for viewers like me. The animated series ran from 1995-1999 and marks its 20th birthday this year with a live performance at SF Sketchfest. I spoke with co-creator and star Jonathan Katz about the show, his life and career. Including: improv with H. Jon Benjamin and Laura Silverman; hustling ping-pong with David Mamet; how not to pitch a project; ripping it up on a mobility scooter.
