Featuring my lovely partner, Layne, we take a look at one of the founders of the Walking Sim genre and give Dear Esther a try!Note: We only have 1 mic, and recording this was not the easiest task sadly, so if things sound a bit fuzzy, its largely due to how the mic handles gain. Music is undeniably a huge part of what makes video games special, both individually and on an industry-wide level. Not only is no gaming award show complete without a gong for the year's best soundtrack, but even the Proms have started acknowledging that video game scores have come a long way since the 8-bit days (without throwing any shade on chiptune, a legitimate genre in and of itself with some stone-cold classics). That's probably why, from huge AAAs to smaller indies, music can account for a significant chunk of any game's budget — and it's definitely worth the investment. For this episode, the Indieventure trio have pooled our vinyl collection to talk about some of our personal favourite indie game music highlights. I know you guys say you love long show notes but there's seriously no way I'm going to be able to list every track we talk about here — which is why we've put together [a YouTube playlist] that should cover everything instead! A quick overview, though, sees us talking about the music from games including Balatro, Bombrush Cyberfunk, Braid, Celeste, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Dear Esther, Death's Door, Dicey Dungeons, Disco Elysium, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Fields of Mistria, Firewatch, Hades, Hades II, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, Hollow Knight, Hotline Miami, Hypnospace Outlaw, Journey, Kentucky Route Zero, Monster Prom 2: Monster Camp, Minecraft, No Straight Roads, Paradise Killer, Pizza Tower, Pyre, Return of the Obra Dinn, Stardew Valley, A Tower Full of Cats, Trombone Champ, Undertale, Unravel, and We Happy Few. If you'd like to hear every track we discuss in this episode in its entirety, we've added them all to a convenient YouTube playlist that you can find here. During the course of this chat we also promise you a couple of specific links, so go here for Bombrush Cyberfunk soundtrack memes, and here for one of the Ace Attorney x Danganronpa musical mashup channels on YouTube that Rebecca (and now Rachel too) is so very fond of. Finally, as ever, are our current hyperfixations! Rebecca has discovered an accidentally awesome double-bill of horror novels with a timely social message in Chuck Tingle's Bury Your Gays and Grady Hendrix's The Final Girl Support Group; Liam's been having a whimsical time in recently-released indie platformer The Plucky Squire; and Rachel is having a moment with girly pop in general, and Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter in particular, thanks to the recent VMAs award show. Our music, meanwhile, was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic. Meanwhile, you can find us at indieventurepodcast.co.uk or wherever you listen to podcasts.
Developer: The Chinese Room Publisher: Secret Mode Director: Dan Pinchbeck, John McCormack Game Designer: Rob McLachlan Compositore: Jason Graves Motore di gioco: Unreal Engine 5 Piattaforme: PC, Xbox (Game Pass), PS5 Giocato su: Series S Status Titolo: Titolo Completato Ore di gioco: 4 ore
Er Still Wakes the Deep et gyserspil, du bør spille? Still Wakes the Deep er et første-persons gyserspil udviklet af engelske The Chinese Room og udgivet af Sumo Group Limited. The Chinese Room har tidligere skabt de roste spil Dear Esther, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs og Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.
The podcast today starts with a conundrum: What podcast to Re-Release this week between Control and Dear Esther? Starting off you get a reflective contemplative editor McCoy trying to solve that problem live on air. He comes in a little "I got this" and ends "Ok, I got a bit humbled and I totally didn't have this". It's a nice journey that ends up delivering some presence, some value, some stories, and overall just proves Editor McCoy deserves his own podcast. Also, forgive the audio quality, you have no idea the production setup required to make this episode work back in the day, and also... I was young and didn't know what I was doing back then. I still don't know what I'm doing now, but I'm not young anymore.

Moinsen!

The first chapter of the groundbreaking walking simulator by THE CHINESE ROOM, "Dear Esther" tells a haunting tale of solitude, isolation, and a descent into madness on a lonely Scottish island...
In this episode we are tackling a (slightly) old walking/talking simulator called Dear Esther. This game has gotten much praise over the years as a deep and meditative study in what video games can do. But does it do its job all that well?Follow your hosts! In episode twenty-four of Attack the Backlog, Marc walks through the hills and caves of a small Scottish island in Dear Esther, the walking simulator that popularized the genre. And Dear Esther is a walking simulator in its truest form because walking is pretty much all you do and, surprisingly, it's not too bad. Dear Esther originally came out on February 14th, 2012 and is currently available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Anyway, something-something with a lot of walking and not enough Walken, cheers and enjoy the show. Anyway, that's it and that's all folks. If you're feeling extra generous, you can become a patron, donate a little something-something, or subscribe to show your support for the site, the plentiful podcasts, the various videos, the absurd art, and all of the other nonsense we make over here at Pixelated Sausage. This week we play some really exciting and unique new and returning games. First up, we visit the days of old with the Super Nintendo Classic Edition and talk about our hands-on experience with the new console. We also talk about the Switch-exclusive title Golf Story. It's an RPG/sports game where you improve your golf swing and your story overall with the people you meet. Austin plays Kingdom: New Lands, a tower defense game where you play as a king in a "new land" and hire your people to build and defend your bases for you. Finally we get our hands on the Call of Duty WWII Public Beta and talk about the pros and cons of the highly anticipated new game from Activision and Sledgehammer Games. In our news segment, we talk about Star Wars Battlefront 2 and the Red Dead Redemption 2 trailers, discuss the new Ataribox and touch on the creators of Dear Esther going dark for a bit. We also revisit Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds with different, but related stories this week on the success of both games. Don't miss our upcoming video game releases and free games of the month at the end! It's a killer line up for October and you won't want to miss it. "Walking simulators" or "first-person feels" are kind of a new development in gaming, but are they games at all? Today, Tim, Clayton, Kellen, and guest Alex Wayman discuss titles like Dear Esther and Gone Home debating THAT VERY QUESTION! Once again, Forbes http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2015/08/26/everybodys-gone-to-the-rapture-why-do-people-hate-walking-simulators/provides some nice background for this topic.
