Episode #102 - On this Wonderful Women Wednesday we celebrate Stacey Cunningham, who made history on May 22, 2018 as the first female president of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in its 226-year history. Cunningham was named the 67th president of the NYSE.   In 1994, while still a university student, Cunningham completed a summer internship at the NYSE.  Two years later, she began working there as a trading floor clerk. At the time, Cunningham was one of the few dozen female employees on the trading floor – compared to over a thousand male employees.  CNBC does a live interview with her from the floor of the NYSE, (which is the background noise you hear) and talks about how technology and algorithms play a key role in the industry. The crypto currency is also discussed as it relates to stock, and this interview is over two years old.  Crypto is now taking over the stock market in 2021.  Dark pools are discussed, which is a private forum for trading securities, derivatives, and other financial instruments.  She encourages the everyday person to learn more about investing.  You do not need to be rich to invest in the stock market.  There are stocks with shares under $5.00 if you want to try it.  Companies like E-Trade, Robinhood and others are easy to understand and will help the beginning investor.  Three days from today, she celebrates her three year anniversary in this role. We’ve covered a lot of the strategic financing milestones for startups seeking to build a sustainable and enduring business -- from mindsets for startup fundraising to when and how to build a finance functionwith a CFO to what it takes to do an initial public offering (IPO) and stories from the inside out. There’s also a lot that goes on behind the scenes en route to IPO, including how they’re priced and what the "pop" means.Yet another route to the public markets is the direct listing, recently reinvented for tech companies (with Spotify and Slack so far). We explained the process and tradeoffs in this early primer by Jamie McGurk, so this episode of the a16z Podcast brings together two experts from the frontlines: the architect of the direct listings in their current form, Barry McCarthy, current CFO of Spotify (and former CFO of Netflix); and Stacey Cunningham, president of the NYSE where they were listed -- in conversation with Sonal Chokshi to share more about the what, the how, and the why from an insider perspective. What's the bigger picture here, including secular shifts in the public and private markets? Zooming in closer, what are all the details and nuances involved in true pricing, investor days, forward guidance, and other market mechanisms for "radical transparency"? What did it take behind the scenes to make this all happen, and what's still happening? And finally, what are some of the common myths and misconceptions around direct listings (and IPOs) as methods for going public? Turns out, there's a lot that goes into making markets... and market making.---The views expressed here are those of the individual AH Capital Management, L.L.C.

Our new episode of A Call to Lead is my interview with Stacey Cunningham. Stacey started at the New York Stock Exchange as an intern, quit to go to culinary school, did a stint at rival NASDAQ, returned—and rose through the ranks to become the NYSE's first-ever female president. That's an unconventional path to the top job (yes, “president” is the top position at the NYSE), and Stacey is leading the 227-year-old company in unconventional and new ways. She's full of career advice and leadership wisdom. Here are five things that Stacey said and my team and I found particularly valuable: Leadership and management are not the same thing. So being able to contribute to the path forward doesn't mean I have to have X number of people reporting in to me, so my organization is bigger. 16:43   Be yourself. If I can do my job in my own skin, that's much easier. I think society is becoming a little more welcoming to that. 20:20   Never waste a hire. Always hire the best player you can get—and someone better than you. 21:21   When I think about the skills you have to have as a leader, you don't have to have them all within yourself. You have to have them within your team. 20:52   Make sure that you're not such a key critical person that I can't give you an opportunity to go do something new because I can't take you out of the job you're in. 21:55 Make sure you tune into the NYSE's very own podcast, Inside the Ice House! It's full of great conversations with inspiring leaders and I know you'll love it: https://www.theice.com/insights/conversations/inside-the-ice-house You can learn more by visiting: www.sap.com/acalltolead.
