Here are key takeaways: [03:43] Businesses want to partner because their customers require it. Consumer demand is driving businesses to engage more with nonprofits, with 94% of consumers wanting to know how companies are improving their communities. Frame your conversation with this perk in mind. [09:51] Bring businesses alongside you to deepen your connection. Creating a corporate industry council can be an effective way to engage business leaders and deepen their commitment to your cause. When they feel part of what you're doing the relationship is likely to continue longer term. [17:10] Encourage them to create their own event that benefits you. Empowering passionate supporters to organize their own events can lead to significant fundraising success, as demonstrated by Brandon's $1.2 million event. [24:02] Employees want to work for businesses that give back to the community. Corporate involvement in charitable causes can significantly boost employee commitment and emotional connection to the company. Get creative with them on how they can showcase and feature your relationship with their team. [29:14] Give them more visibility. Ask major donors to create quick video testimonials about your organization's impact – it's a win-win for both parties and adds value to your marketing efforts. We are launching Season 3 with a very special episode. In this interview with Kim Campbell, I embark on a journey to understand how academia is preparing the next generation of technical communicators. My aim is to spotlight how the Department of Technical Communication at the University of North Texas, in particular, is collaborating with the practitioners of the profession to bring a hands-on experience to the students and prepare them for the real world. Kim touches upon the disconnect that exists sometimes between academia and the industry, and how a collaboration between the two is the need of the hour for the betterment of the profession and the community at large.  Some questions we touch upon:What are the drawbacks of having tech comm housed in a humanities department? What's the objective of an academic partnership with the corporate world? One of the biggest challenges that academics face is studying what's happening at organizations in our field. Why is this access critical and what can be done about it?What does success look like in academia?Guest BioKim Sydow Campbell, Ph.D., is a linguist who has been studying workplace language for more than 30 years. She joined the Department of Technical Communication at the University of North Texas in 2016, where she now serves as Director of Corporate Relations, promoting constructive interactions among industry professionals, students, and faculty. When she isn't doing research or teaching, you'll find her cooking, watching movies, swimming, or just hanging with her family and fur babies. Unlike traditional sports, where there are systems, adult supervision, structured training, and competition to test participants' skills and growth, gaming and esports are free spaces where new members have to figure out how everything works. A kid that starts playing Fortnite, for instance, must figure out how to play, the best strategies and, after dying a bunch of times, will eventually get better. But as he plays in a space with no restrictions of any kind, he might be exposed to inappropriate language, degrading remarks, or even bullying. These are a few of Luke Zelon's major concerns and some of the many things he's working on changing in the esports and gaming space.Luke Zelon is the Founder of NXT UP Esports, a space where kids can get better at the games they love to play, improve their confidence, social development, and other life skills playing with other kids and campers in a regulated, controlled, and toxicity-free environment. Luke has an extensive background in traditional sports; he worked as Director of Business Development at Catalyst Sports & Media and in Corporate Partnership and Business Development at The Los Angeles Football Club. In this episode, our conversation revolves around the strategies and practices that worked perfectly on traditional sports that can be adapted to gaming and esports. Luke shared details of his past as a casual gamer, his first contact with competitive gaming, and what made him decided to participate and add value to the gaming industry. He also offered the perfect analogy of what represents esports in the gaming industry; we talked about his favorite games, future projects at NXT UP Esports, and more. Tune in to Episode 12 of A Gamer's Story and have a different look at what esports and gaming can offer to the youth. Some Questions I Ask:What made you want to stick around in the gaming community? Product integration into movies and video games was also a highlight of her time there. After her six-year stint in Atlanta, Brette joined UFC in 2011 and led Global Marketing Partnership Activation. A few of the strategic partners on the UFC roster included: A-B, Harley-Davidson, Dodge, AirAsia, Modelo, Monster Energy, BodyArmor and MetroPCS. Brette joined MGM Resorts International as Global Head of Corporate Partnership in October 2019. Her team manages partnership sales and activation for the MGM enterprise, the WNBA Las Vegas Aces, as well as, beverage partnerships. Their partnership roster includes Coke, PepsiCo, Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors, Avis, Panama Jack, American Express, MasterCard, just to name a few. VIP and Group Ticketing for all live events (9,000+) across 37 venues, fall under her purview. Brette is a graduate of University of Miami and holds a BS in PR, Psychology and Minor in Sports Management. She is also the Founder and President of the WISE (Women in Sports and Events) Las Vegas Chapter. Brette's Top 4: When you head in for an interview, do all the research on the company that you can and be prepared to articulate where YOUR strengths fit in. Create two metaphorical boxes, one for people who support you and one for people who don't. When you feel the naysayers creep in, just put them in the “Don't Support Me” box. Don't be afraid to make a change. For Brette, changes can be made for two main reasons, first, sometimes you have to move on to move up. Meaning, getting the experience you need to grow sometimes does not come from your current employer so keep your eyes open and your mind open to expansion and change, and second, if you no longer align with your company, meaning that you can no longer be “True to YOUR Brand” it's time to go. Don't ever sacrifice what you stand for for your job. Some things don't change. Come in early and stay late. Check with your boss before you leave work. These behaviors will help you to stand out and show your organization you are willing to go the extra mile.
