In this episode, I'm joined by a fellow stepmom to dive deep into the rollercoaster of emotions and challenges we face. We get real about some of the biggest hurdles that can make us question our sanity... and maybe why we didn't just sign up for yoga instead of a blended family. Here's what we covered:Losing Yourself: That feeling when you wake up and realize you've put yourself last for way too long. We talk about how easy it is to get caught up in being everything to everyone—your stepkids, your partner, their ex, and even the dog. (but seriously) We get into how to reclaim your identity without guilt. The Rabbit Hole of the Kids' Past: Admit it. You've gone down the rabbit hole of comparing yourself to your partner's past life. Whether it's obsessing over family vacations you weren't part of or analyzing photos on Facebook, we've all been there. We unpack the emotional exhaustion of living in the past and how to refocus on your present.Your Partner's Past: Speaking of rabbit holes... let's talk about thinking too much about your partner's previous relationship(s). It's a slippery slope to resentment. We chat about how to move forward with confidence instead of constantly comparing yourself to someone who's not in the picture (but somehow feels like they still are).Adding an 'Ours Baby': How adding a baby together changes the dynamics of the family. Spoiler: It's not always as cute as the Instagram photos make it seem. We share tips on how to balance the excitement with the inevitable complexities it brings, from your stepkids' reactions to how your relationship with your partner shifts.Setting Boundaries with the Ex: This one's a doozy. How do you set healthy boundaries with the ex without coming off like the wicked stepmom? We share personal stories and actionable tips on maintaining your peace and ensuring your relationship with your partner stays strong, even when the ex is… well, challenging. And More!: We also touch on some of those random stepmom moments that make you go, “Is it just me, or…?” Spoiler alert: It's not just you. We cover everything from stepmom guilt to maintaining friendships outside of the family unit.Tune in for a real, raw, and relatable conversation that will remind you—you're not in this alone.Want a specific topic covered? Murder by poison is a rare method used by criminals. It is used in just under one-half of one percent of cases. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss three very different cases where people were intentionally poisoned, in an attempt to kill. Indiana man Alfred Ruf has just been jailed for drugging his wife Lisa multiple times. When Lisa was unconscious, Alfred would sleep with her daughter. Alfred told police that the end goal had been for Lisa to die. Texas attorney Mason Herring and his wife Catherine were having marital issues and decided to separate. Soon after, Catherine found out she was pregnant with their third child, so the couple decided to try to make things work. Mason decided to put an abortion drug into Catherine's beverages, on repeated occasions. Catherine installed cameras in their home when she became suspicious after falling ill. Mason was eventually sentenced to a measly 180 days in jail after pleading guilty to charges of injury to a child and assault of a pregnant person. The couple's daughter was born 10 weeks premature and now attends therapy 8 times per week and she has developmental delays. Lana Clayton was millionaire Steven Clayton's 7th wife. In 2018, Lana apparently found Steven laying at the bottom of a staircase. She ran outside and flagged down a motorist to ask for help. Lana initially refused an autopsy for Steven and also told his family that he had no will, which not surprisingly, made them suspicious. An autopsy was eventually carried out and it was discovered that Lana had poisoned Steven by putting eye drops into his coffee. She is also said to have thrown his phone into a lake so that he could not call for help following the poisoning. Lana pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and tampering with a food or a drug causing death. She was sentenced to 25 years in prison without parole. A 60-year-old former Virginia police officer has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murders of his wife and stepdaughter. On Friday, Henrico County Circuit Court Judge sentenced Richard C. Crowder to 100 years in prison for the 2022 killings of 53-year-old Diane Crowder and 35-year-old Carrie Szaksz . Crowder had pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder earlier this year. The judge handed Crowder 50-year sentences for each murder, to be served consecutively. Additionally, Crowder received another 50 years for two counts of attempted aggravated murder of law enforcement officers, making his total sentence 150 years. These additional charges stem from an hours-long standoff during which Crowder fired at his former colleagues who responded to the scene. The incident occurred in July 2022 when Diane Crowder was moving out of the home she shared with Richard Crowder, located about 11 miles southeast of Richmond, Virginia. As Diane and her daughter Carrie were outside, supervising the move, Richard Crowder arrived armed with a handgun and opened fire, killing both women. Henrico County Commonwealth Attorney Shannon Taylor detailed the harrowing events, explaining that Diane Crowder had been in the process of leaving her husband and had hired movers to assist. The situation escalated when Richard Crowder, described as drunk and agitated by the movers, began shooting. During the sentencing, the presiding judge remarked that Crowder's actions represented a profound betrayal of his oaths as a former police officer, emphasizing the gravity of the case. The judge's words echoed the sentiment of many, noting that this case was unforgettable due to its sheer brutality. Witnesses from the moving company described a tense atmosphere before the shooting. They reported hearing screaming, yelling, and gunshots, prompting them to escape by leaping from a second-story window. One mover sustained injuries during the escape. Crowder then barricaded himself inside the home, leading to a nine-hour standoff with police, during which he fired multiple shots at responding officers. One of the movers expressed relief at having escaped, acknowledging the peril they faced had they remained inside. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? I have been getting messages lately from stepmoms asking how they can better support their stepdaughter during different seasons of life. Ironically Ryleigh (my stepdaughter) wrote a song about our stepmother/stepdaughter journey. I immediately asked her if we could discuss it on a podcast and if she would sing the song for you. In this episode we discuss her feelings when her dad told her he was going to ask me to marry him, the dark season of her teen years, and our reconciliation period. She also shared what she wished we would have done differently. Follow Ryleigh and her musical journey on youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTU0-Nd7DQXh_Bp4VEDEQXQ Her newest album is filled with stories about growing up in a blended family. When my stepdaughter asked to call me "Mom," feelings of validation, warmth, and love overcame me. They were immediately followed by alarm bells. I refused to allow it. It felt disrespectful to the irreplaceable relationship she shares with her mom and the relationship I'd share with my future child. In today's episode, I share the heartwarming solution we came up with, and when I think it's okay for stepchildren to call a stepmom "Mom!" As I always say, no two stepfamilies are alike!Ready to create a stepmom life you love? You have evidence that your 17-year-old girlfriend's stepfather sent himself copies of her nude photos when he confiscated her phone. Knowing this, now she's got to spend time alone with him when her mother goes out of town. What should she do? We'll try to find answers to this and more here on Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Hey! Where the heck has David C. Smalley been? An underage girl discovered her stepfather sent himself copies of her nude photos when he confiscated her phone, and now she's got to spend time alone with him when her mother goes out of town for a few weeks. What should she do? Marrying into a family and its business — which you've been told your spouse will eventually take over — has you wondering how to ensure your own financial security if it turns out other relatives want a piece of the business somewhere down the line. After suffering a brain injury in a terrible car accident, many aspects of your personality have changed — including a fresh perspective about how your dysfunctional family and the religious cult in which you were raised have been neglectful and abusive. How should the "new" you face the future? You've been waiting for nearly a decade to exit an unhappy marriage until your youngest kid turns 18, which will happen soon. Unfortunately, you and your spouse work in a full-time religious ministry, and divorce will mean dismissal, loss of income, disappointing the family and community, and surfacing of past transgressions you'd rather not revisit. What's your least disastrous path forward? How do you effectively network without feeling like some kind of manipulative phony? Have any questions, comments, or stories you'd like to share with us?
