I was so excited to have the opportunity to talk to Risa Bramon Garcia, co-founder and master teacher of The BGB Studio in LA. I wanted to know why it was so important to her to empower the actors in her studio and around the world. "There is a big difference between the actor who takes ownership of their talent and the actor who does not," she says. Risa goes on to explain that when actors do the work for its own sake, then they feel like they belong. We also talked about the importance for actors to write and the need for more varied stories to be told. Risa's passion for all that she does in the industry was clear throughout. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Risa as much as I did. In addition to being co-founder and master teacher at The BGB Studio, Risa has worked consistently as a director, producer, casting director, and writer. She's had the great fortune to have collaborated with some of the most talented, passionate, and groundbreaking artists in the world both in theatre and film/TV. Risa's passion for teaching and coaching has lead to her collaboration with Steve Braun in The BGB Studio, a creative space and community they created as an artistic home for actors, writers, directors, filmmakers, and casting directors. Here she gets to do it all! The February 2017 Mission show was one of our editor's first live Odyssey events, and it was also an early milestone in the storytelling career of Steve Braun, one of Odyssey's most peerless volunteers. Steve told the assembled audience about all the reasons he considers himself mission-driven, not obsessed. Although, sometimes, also obsessed. From Steve's Odyssey bio: A recent graduate of the U of A School of Government and Public Policy with a Masters of Public Administration, Steven Braun works as a 911 Communications Specialist Supervisor for fire and EMS. On his return to school after 30 years, Steven found that most classes required some sort presentation and that he suffered from an extreme fear of public speaking. His solution: standing alone on a stage under a single light, microphone in hand, telling embarrassing stories about himself. Not only did it work for school presentations, Steven found himself hooked on written and oral storytelling, and now volunteers with Odyssey, fumbling his way through website administration. Prior to his career in public safety, Steven worked as a chef for 26 years in New York and Tucson, where he was a partner at the legendary, but sadly defunct, Boccata Bistro Caffe. Steven has been married to Phyllis for 33 years and they have one child, Jax. To date, Steven's published works include two recipes in an out of print cookbook, but he's hoping to change that in the future. Stay tuned for more… This episode was performed and recorded in front of a live audience at The Screening Room in Tucson, AZ, on February 2nd, 2017, and was curated by Molly McCloy. If so, you've touched the realm of the Mythic. If you've watched any iconic film anytime in the last three decades, chances are you've seen the work of Director & Casting Director Risa Bramon Garcia. She's worked with talented actors on dozens of films and TV shows like JFK, Speed, Natural Born Killers and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. I tried to control my fan-girling when I asked her about casting her first feature, Desperately Seeking Susan. For me that movie was just the coolest thing ever because it starred the first lady of pop, Madonna. But don't worry. I played it cool. In fact there was a lot for me to actor geek out over. All of the projects Risa has cast over the years are an actors dream. Born on the 4th of July, Dead Presidents, and Roseanne! She also directed the film 200 Cigarettes with an incredible ensemble cast. I won't go on to list her resume because you can Google it for yourself and see just how many projects she has been involved in. You'll notice, Risa has worked on a lot of Oliver Stone movies. She describes their relationship of that of mentor and mentee. She says she learned from him and grew professionally under his father figure-like guidance. She also talks about a lack of female mentors for directors today in a very male dominant section of the industry. Risa Bramon Garcia and BGB Studios Co-Founder Steve Braun It's clear how much she loves actors and wants to help guide them. So much so she and her partner Steve Braun (former MIH guest!) opened the BGB Acting Studio in North Hollywood. She describes it as a community of actors rather than just a place for classes. I've studied there and I can attest to the familial feeling. I really want to go back too but first I have to figure out this whole mom/podcast/writing/actor schedule that I'm juggling lately. There's one part in particular toward the end of the interview that I want my actor friends to hear. I asked her about knowing when it's time to quit the biz. When do you have to come to terms with the fact that you may never "make it" and figure out how to make a life for yourself outside Hollywood? Whoah. Heavy for MIH! But listen to what she says then let me know what you think. She was surprisingly very open about the challenges she faced when starting a family which I know many people can relate to. She says no matter what odds she faced, not having children was never an option. Many of my mom actor friends wonder how they will be able to juggle having a family and working regularly. Risa was very open about the fact that she had lots of help while she was working from nanny's to family and friends. The takeaway being, you do what you have to do to make it work. And family is at the center of it all. I love that! I soaked up every second I could with Risa. It's not often that someone with her experience and knowledge really takes the time to share what they've learned so that others can be lifted up. I truly hope you find value in this interview. I know I did. For more information on Risa's studio go to www.bramongarciabraun.com You can also follow her on Twitter @Risabg, and on Facebook.
I wish I could be zen. I wish I could find a way to reach deep down inside my soul and find some calm to pull from whenever I need it, especially when it comes to my acting career. LA-based actor and acting coach Steve Braun can do this. BGB Studio co-founder Steve Braun Actually one of the first things I noticed about him when he was my acting teacher was just how calm he was. He embraced the silence, a rare gift that actors too often forget to do. And he gave his students insightful tools to learn more about themselves while discovering their character. It was a really great class where I met some wonderful people and let myself go a little bit. Which if you know me is not an easy thing for me to do. I enjoyed his class so much at Bramon Garcia Braun Studio. So I wanted to see if he'd let me pick his brain about where he gets his zen, how it can be helpful for actors, and why he stopped pursuing his showbiz career and started helping others pursue theirs. He said yes! Steve and June (aka June Bug) Steve has been an actor for a long time (Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, The Immortals, The Trip) before he co-founded the BGB Studio with casting director Risa Bramon Garcia (the BG in BGB!) In this episode he explains why he left the grind behind and found fulfillment in helping actors "do the work." He also talks about how becoming a father has changed his perspective in some ways, and not in others. I got to express my frustration with the Meisner technique (I really don't get it) and sound like a complete jerk while pronouncing the word Buddhist. Steve's wife Amber Borycki and their daughter June But my favorite part was sharing common experiences with another parent. Steve and his wife Amber have an adorable girl name June who he hopes to raise with feminist leanings, but not be a dick about it. I love it when parents are passionate but stay grounded. It keeps the world interesting! For more information on Steve and how you can take classes at BGB Studio, go to their website. And if you just want a little inspiration in your acting career listen to the BGB podcast, and check out their Facebook page.
