This Is Not Happening - An Album Of The Month Podcast

Welcome to Episode 43 of This is Not Happening. An Album of the Month Podcast where in Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'.  This is where we pick a theme and each select a song that represents that theme. We judge each others selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'?This month, in Part 1, we embrace the truly beautiful, hynotic new album by Helado Negro, called 'Phasor'.  Joey (that's me) is running 'tings this month, at least one of the crew loves this album but the other two ... I'm not so sure.  In Part 2, the Spin it or Bin it theme is 'New Music' where we all chose a track from the last 2 months and ask the others 'Spin It or Bin It'?Part 1 | Helado Negro | PhasorThis is right up my street. It's calming, beautiful, intriguing little gem of an album. It's instantly accessible and a rewarding listen but it is also a gift that keeps on giving. There is a surprsing complexity to the album if you want there to be. But the big questions is 'what on earth do we call it?' Guy suggests 'Cosmic Pop' and I think he's right. Listen to the album here.Watch some videos here.Buy some stuff here.Follow him on Instagram here.Part 2 | Spin It or Bin It | 'New Music (Jan, Feb, March '24)The theme is nice and simple and always a fun one - new music. Pick a track, any track from the past 2-3 months. Our chosen 4 tracks can be found on a play list here. In order to chose a track we each shortlist 4 tracks each, a combined 16 track playlist can be found here.David chose -  'AA Bouquet for your 180 Face' by Saya GreyGuy chose -'Spare me the decision'   Nation of Language / CutoutsJoey chose - 'Right Back At It' by Waxahatchee / MJ LendermanNolan chose - 'Invulnerable'  by K-OSWe've been writing the blog for years come and have a look - https://thisisnothappening.net/

Why do some of our identity-defining commitments resist reason and critical reflection, and why do we persist in them even when they threaten our happiness, safety, and comfort? Paul Katsafanas argues in his book Philosophy of Devotion:The Longing for Invulnerable Ideals (Oxford UP, 2023) that these commitments involve an ethical stance that he calls devotion to sacred ideas.  A sacred value is one that we cannot trade with ordinary values, or even consider trading off. When a value is sacred, no rational considerations will disrupt commitment to it. Philosophy of Devotion offers a detailed philosophical account and defense of these features both reasonable and unreasonable, beneficial and detrimental. Katsafanas explains that a life with meaningful commitments is richer and more meaningful than a life without deep, sustained commitments.  At the same time, that same devotion can deform into forms of individual and group fanaticism that can be alienating, extremist, and violent. This fanaticism is driven by feelings of persecution and threat to a fragile self, and exacerbated by feelings of ressentiment, a growing anger and resentment of opposition that becomes self-perpetuating.    In this book Katsafanas also provides an alternative to fanaticism, a way to express non-pathological forms of devotion. With this approach, individuals can avoid the dangers of fanaticism on the one hand and an empty lack of meaning on the other. This perpetual quest requires maintaining a form of existential flexibility, which may include oscillation between affirming these sacred values and deepening understanding through consideration of challenging questions.  Recommended reading: The True Believer by Eric Hoffer Meghan Cochran studies belief and action as a technologist working in customer experience and as a student of religion, business, and literature. He works on ethics, moral psychology, and nineteenth-century philosophy. His latest book is Philosophy of Devotion: The Longing for Invulnerable Ideals. In this episode, we focus on Philosophy of Devotion. We start by discussing what devotion is. We talk about the psychological features of sacred values; psychological strategies for treating commitments and fixed and immutable; and the connection between sacred values and devotion. We discuss a connection between devotion and nihilism, and we get into different accounts of fanaticism. Finally, we talk about how we can hold sacred values and avoid fanaticism, through irony, affirmation, and the “deepening move”. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, OLAF ALEX, JONATHAN VISSER, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, SIMON COLUMBUS, PHIL KAVANAGH, MIKKEL STORMYR, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, ALEXANDER DANNBAUER, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, NICK GOLDEN, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, MORTEN EIKELAND, DR BYRD, DANIEL FRIEDMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, ROOFTOWEL, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, CHARLES MOREY, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, PEDRO BONILLA, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Text us at (615) 861-9503 and join the conversation. Notes from today's conversation: 10 Principles of Talking to Friends, Family Members, Other Christians 1. Be clear about your goal - and decide whether it is noble and achievable. Is it to change a mind? Express your anger? Help the oppressed? Go on record? Some goals are better than others. State your goal clearly and in words in your mind before you decide to engage. 2. It's okay not to talk - sometimes this is the wise decision. The idea that it is cowardly not to always engage is false and unwise. 3. Choose relationship over “rightness” - 80% of Americans say they have “very few or no friends" who are different from them politically. We will only get more polarized and divided if we allow ourselves to cut off those who think differently than we do. 4. Don't make it personal - if you decide to engage, use "I" statements more than "You" statements. ("I was wondering about...," "I was concerned about...," or "Help me understand...," not "You are racist," "You hate this country," etc.) 5. Talk in person, not over social media - social media debates go nowhere good. Don't use your platforms to engage in angry or contentious debates. 6. Speak to the deeper issue - usually fear and safety (STUDY: Genie study (300 adults) - imagine: 1/2 group genie - able to fly; 1/2 group genie - completely safe, invulnerable to harm. "Fly" group - no change in conservative/liberal divide; conservatives endorsed more conservative issues, resistant to social change; "Invulnerable" group - social attitudes (toward women, gays, minorities, immigrants) shifted, became more open to social change); however, sometimes it can be uglier - collective narcissism 7. Think win/win - what do they want, what do you want? Is there common ground to be found? Can the discussion be framed in a way that looks at the good things each party wants? This doesn't mean you have to agree that all attitudes or positions are the same or equally right, but it can mean that there might be underlying desires that are good and noble and can be spoken to in the interaction. 8. Be genuinely curious about the other person - listen well, have empathy; what led them here? (their context, their echo chamber, their own psychology) 9. Realize people can be biased without knowing it - Implicit Association Test, Dunning-Kruger effect, Broken Patterns research. Because of this, they may be truly upset and angry at the suggestion they hold biased attitudes because this is not how they view themselves. 10. Stick up for the oppressed - if you need criteria about when you should speak or act, this is it, but do it strategically (don't just be the person who posts the angry screed on social media or angrily cuts off disagreeing family members, and so on). Use the other principles to enter into conversation or engagement if their attitudes or actions can have a harmful effect on the powerless. Recommended Books: White Too Long - Robert P. Jones - a must-read for all Christians about the church's long history of complicity in racism in the U.S. The Color of Compromise & How to Fight Racism - both books by Jemar Tisby are vital reading. How to Win Friends and Influence People - Dale Carnegie - a timeless book on the strategy and skill of truly engaging people and building relationships. Don't Label Me: An Incredible Conversation for Divided Times - Irshad Manji - lays out a mindset about how to enter into these relationships and interactions. Tao Te Ching Verse 67translated by Ellen Marie ChenAll under heaven say that my Tao is great,That it seems useless (pu hsiao).Because it is great,Therefore it seems useless. If it were useful,It would have long been small.I have three treasures (pao),To hold and to keep:The first is motherly love (tz'u),The second is frugality (chien),The third is daring not to be at the world's front. With motherly love one can be courageous,With frugality one can be wide reaching,Daring not be at the world's front,One can grow to a full vessel (ch'i).Now to discard motherly love, yet to be courageous,To discard frugality, yet to be wide reaching,To discard staying behind, yet to be at the front,One dies! One with motherly love is victorious in battle,Invulnerable in defense. When Heaven wills to save a people,It guards them with motherly love.Photo by N. on UnsplashThe CycleNot gonna lie, I’ve done this whole verse backwards for most of my life. Which I guess is OK, given that the nature of the Universe is cyclical! Here’s what I mean: Lao Tzu says that there is a divine order to things. It starts with compassion, then leads to contentment, then continues with humility. If one lives life in placing these virtues second, one courts disaster. When things are confusing, he says, remember to just start with compassion.Right now, in where I’m at, If I were to sum up the Tao Te Ching, I’d use this verse as the cover page. Of course, I love how it is ensconced about 80% of the way through, mostly because of the reason Lao Tzu cites in the very first part - that it’s great and all but doesn't seem to have anything to do with real life. So in my pain, I became receptive to the first 80% of this teaching and practiced it as best I could along the way. This has made me even more receptive to what is for me in this moment the crux of the Tao Te Ching. I mean we’ve talked about the different ways and aspects of compassion. We’ve talked about not judging, we’ve talked about fighting and then mourning the fight, we’ve talked a bout that do-nothing thing. We’ve talked about contentment. Becoming aware of desires and abandoning them, attending to no-affairs, and non-competition.We’ve talked about humility, too. Abandoning identity, service others and giving, and being vulnerable.I feel like Lao Tzu sums up all these things for us in this verse. And not only does he say that these are the main things we’ve been discussing, he also presents the cycle, so if people like me have done it backwards, I can use the light to guide me back home. It starts with compassion, he says. Practicing that will lead me to contentment and practicing contentment will lead me to humility. When I am close and connected with these three things, I then discover that life seems to be worth living. I find limitless opportunities to take advantage of being in human form. Once I am connected - and I can reconnect any time by practicing - I move back into Harmony and can really begin consciously participating in the Divine Infinite.
