Steve CooperTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Steve Cooper. In this episode, we discuss his previous career as a stand up comedian, and how that turned him into an interviewer. We talk a bit about New Jersey, and where the best pizza is. I share my favorite story about Cherry HIl, NJ, and then we get a bit personal with some of Steve's previous health issues. Next we move onto how Steve became involved with the Big Daddy Graham Show, and how this eventually spun him off into his own show. Steve shares some fun and fascinating stories about being in and around Hollywood. Stories of his interactions with Gary Coleman, and even Jonathan Taylor Thomas. From Steve's days working at Planet Hollywood, to writing his own cookbook, and being a hand model for television; we cover all kinds of stuff. Finally, we chit chat about his podcast Cooper Talk. On his show, Steve interviews guests from music, comedy, and the acting industries, and has been doing it for well over a thousand episodes across nearly 15 years. We have a few guests in common, and bring up some specific examples of how interview style matters! In the latest episode of the Sadmen's journey down a rock and roll highway that starts in 1970(ish) and ends in 1995(ish), the lads pull out the corduroys and the paisley shirts and head for the warm bath of psychedelic bewilderment that was 1972. Having encountered Jethro Tull's Aqualung some 68 episodes previously, and hashed out the whole 'is it a concept album, isn't it a concept album' debate, it was time to make the acquaintance of its successor - Thick As A Brick. There were many questions to be answered, but none of them was 'Is this a concept album?' because of that, friends, there is no doubt. The problem with the Enter Sadmen podcast is that when one of the boys goes a bit weird, the other two follow suit. It's like Pavolv's dogs. Or something. Anyway, it doesn't matter. All you need to know is that getting on board with the 'out there' vibe were two more releases that are as curious as they are obscure. From Richard, a trip back to Canada to root out the self-titled debut by A Foot In Cold Water. From Steve, a slightly less arduous journey up the M1 to Northamptonfor Dark Round The Edges, the only release by a band called Dark, and one that will set you back a cool £35,000 to buy on vinyl today. We shit you not.
Collin is joined by special Scooper guest co-host Doug, as we continue the Top 5 series with a SUPER-sized look at the most memorable moments from seasons 1 through 4 of Stranger Things. From Steve's killer bat flip to Max running up that hill to Eddie shredding Metallica, we each reveal our thoughts and then dig into listener emails! Plus, of course, we talk all about that oh-so-awesome Season 5 first-look video!! Grab your alphabet Christmas lights and join us! **Apologies for the lousy audio. Turns out you need to plug your microphone in to have it work. Who knew?**

I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started.Brad Crowell 1:08 Hey everyone, Brad here today. Today we're gonna talk about depression, suicide and mental health. And if that's triggering for you, feel free to skip this episode. If you or anyone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, or are in a mental crisis you can call 988 in the US for the suicide and crisis hotline. And there are there are definitely hotlines in every country around the world I'm sure so take a quick look online. Anyway, onto the episode.Lesley Logan 1:50 Welcome back to the Be It Till You See It interview recap where my co-host in life, Brad, and I are going to dig into the earnest convo I had with Steve Wilson in our last episode, if you haven't yet, listened to the interview, feel free to pause this now, go back and listen to that one and then come back and join us. You might be wondering what the point of this interview is, if you listen to that one, and the whole thing is is like my frickin goodness, we don't talk about mental health enough, enough. And either in your journey, you might personally have some issues with your mental health. Whether it is something that is something that you need to medicate or it's just something of different therapy around or someone in your life is and it can be fucking difficult when someone in your life is going through something you can't fix. And so I really wanted to have this earnest conversation. But before we get into that, today is February 8th 2024. And it's a Laugh and Get Rich Day and you know what? It's a day to laugh and to enjoy the many benefits that laughter brings. The biggest benefit of laughter is it improves our health. Laughing can elevate our mood, lower stress and blood pressure, pressure and strengthen the immune system. Pause. I'm gonna just tell you when I grew up, my parents used to tickle us and go laughter brings healing to the bone. Brad Crowell 2:59 It's the best medicine. Lesley Logan 3:00 Laughter is the best medicine and like we just would laugh, laugh laugh right before bed, which makes zero sense because we couldn't fall asleep afterwards. Brad Crowell 3:07 You get fired up, yeah. Lesley Logan 3:07 But anyway, that's fine. Back to this script of what this day is about. In this way, laughter makes us rich because health is wealth after all. But laughter can also contribute to our financial gains by enriching your professional lives. Those who laugh often tend to be happier. Hello? Happy workers are more productive and are liked by co-workers.Brad Crowell 3:27 So okay, so I looked into this because I was like, laugh and get rich Come on, are you for real? Lesley Logan 3:33 That Think and Grow Rich is that but like Laugh and Get Rich by Napoleon Hill.Brad Crowell 3:38 I was a bit skeptical to say the least. So can laughter actually have an impact on our income? Turns out there is an NIH or a National Institute of Health study that looked into this exact thing. And the results revealed a significant relationship between equivalent income and the frequency of laughter, social relationships and family structures were also associated with the frequency of laughter. So surprise, laughter can actually have an impact on your income and your relationships with other people. So, how about that?Lesley Logan 4:11 (Inaudible) next line? Brad Crowell 4:11 Laugh it up fuzzball.Lesley Logan 4:14 That's a Star Wars reference, by the way. Katie Donnelly, got it. And Rachel Piper and maybe if there's other Star Wars people go for it, let me know. All right, let's go. So February 11th, is when we actually start Agency Mini Number 10.Brad Crowell 4:31 Number ten. Lesley Logan 4:32 So, that's just in three days you can go to OPC, no, that's not it.Brad Crowell 4:35 Nope. You can go to profitablepilates.com/mini Lesley Logan 4:39 Wow, I've never done that profitablepilates (laughs) that's how rich I am, profitablepilates.com/mini. Just sign up because we have yet to pick an Agency Mini Number 11 state and that's not a threat. It's just reality. We are really, really trying to get down to one time a year with this, and we don't know if it's gonna be this year, but it could be. So you want to sign up? Because that's might could be the last time we don't know. Brad Crowell 5:07 Yeah, so we're gonna be helping fitness business owners just like you figure out their messaging, clarify their purpose and how to create a pitch that isn't salesy and feels natural to you, in a week of getting to know Lesley and I and our coaching style, and then afterwards, you can join us in the Agency program. Lesley Logan 5:25 And or just get every question you've ever had answered, like you think you want to start a membership, we'll tell you pros and cons. And we'll tell you if you're ready. And if you are ready, we'll tell you how to keep going. And if you're not, we'll tell you how to get ready. Like, we're not we're not here to shoot anyone's dreams down. We're here to actually make it possible. And we don't want to waste your time doing it. Okay, now OPC. We have summer camp coming up this summer, and we're letting you know that it's coming up, because it's gonna be amazing. And usually throughout the year, we do little workshops. We're not doing that anymore. We're doing a summer camp instead. So you don't want to miss it because it's going to be amazing. And you're going to want to go to opc.me/workshops to get on the waitlist way to go, babe. Added that right in right there live opc.me/workshops that's plural. Okay. Then there's an OPC reformer challenge going on right now.Brad Crowell 6:19 Actually it just wrapped.Lesley Logan 6:20 Just wrapped. But you know what, it didn't wrap for you. Because you can, this is why we're amazing, you can actually sign up for it right now because it starts when you want to start it.Brad Crowell 6:28 You sure can. Lesley Logan 6:28 That's opc.me/challenge. And if you're like, Y'all, I want an accountability challenge. But I don't have reformer. Well keep listening, because in March, we will have a mat version for you. So it's really, really amazing. You can start that anytime if you're like, ah, this week's not great, LL, I'm going to start next week, fine. Write down opc.me/challenge and then sign up next week. Running down this list here. I already mentioned the March Madness Mat Challenge because it's coming up in March, so you know stay tuned. The presale for the barrels flashcard deck. Here's what I can tell you right now because I just placed the order. The spine corrector is finally available from ControlLogix. And if you're like what? Yes, it is. Do you want my discount link? Yes, you do. We'll put it in the show notes, but also Brad Crowell 6:31 Go to opc.me/perks Lesley Logan 6:54 Perks. And if you're like, they want me to call them LL. Well guess what reach out to us. We got an email of the salesperson who will hook you up with my discount link, but you have to email me for that email. So you want to, for the Barrels Deck, the best price is always a presale price. Why? Because we make you wait several months to get them. So your payment for waiting and being patient is 30% off. And the only way to get that is to be on the waitlist for the flashcard which is opc.me/flashcardwaitlist. Do you see how the waitlists are where the epic should happen? Because that's where it happens. Brad Crowell 7:49 That's where it happens. Lesley Logan 7:50 That's where it happens. Amazon podcasts, obviously, so opc.me/flashcardwaitlist, I'm gonna talk over the dog.Brad Crowell 7:58 I couldn't help myself. Every time you touch me it's like static electricity snap on my earballs. Lesley Logan 8:03 For sure. Everyone who's watching on YouTube is watching us like this weird thing with our heads. It's I'm being shocked in my earballs. Okay, so last but not least, the Cambodia early bird has closed. And oh my God, you guys Brad Crowell 8:19 There may still be a few spots left. Lesley Logan 8:21 We don't know because we're recording this in the future in the past for the future. Brad Crowell 8:26 In the past for the future. Lesley Logan 8:27 But if you go to lesleylogan.co/retreat plural or singular? Brad Crowell 8:34 Singular. Lesley Logan 8:34 Singular. You can sign up and see if there and if it says sold out. Well. Brad Crowell 8:40 Lo siento. Lesley Logan 8:41 Yeah, lo siento. I'm sorry. Flash not get on the waitlist.Brad Crowell 8:48 Go to retreats plural and get on the waitlist for next year. Lesley Logan 8:50 Yeah. All right. Before we get into this awesome topic about mental health, do we have an audience question, Brad?Brad Crowell 8:56 We sure did. Thank you, Shawn from Youtube. What are the measurements for the arm and leg springs on the Cadillac if I wanted to make my Cadillac more classical? Lesley Logan 9:08 So, I love this, Shawn. And here's the quick and dirty answer. I have listed the entire measurements for every place where you would want to place a hook on your Cadillac or tower or wall unit on the Cadillac flashcard. So you buy that flashcard deck. It's right there and also in centimeters because I am aware that the rest of the world uses the metric system. Is that correct?Brad Crowell 9:29 Yes, yes it is.Lesley Logan 9:33 Well, what system do we use? Brad Crowell 9:34 Imperial.Lesley Logan 9:35 Imperial. That sounds so tough. Imperial? In this country an imperial system? What? That makes no sense. It makes me think of like, like going to the Great Wall of China. Imperial. Okay. Brad Crowell 9:50 It's because we roll. Lesley Logan 9:51 Wow, you know what, you guys, America makes us really wonder too. Okay, but I do have the metrics system listed, as well as the Imperial. Inches versus centimeters for people who were like, what's the translation there? If you're wanting to make your equipment more classical, if you're an OPC member, we actually help out with this a lot, by the way, because we can look at each particular piece of equipment and give you feedback on yours, also based on your body. But the other thing you want to consider everyone who is retrofitting or not even retrofitting, but just like making modifications to the equipment you have, it's very important, you know this, don't go buy clips at the hardware store, don't like you got to be really, really careful what you're doing, because your equipment that you have, is definitely tested to stand the test of time for the springs that are sold with it. So if you're buying springs, that are not the brand of equipment that you have, here is the deal, should some shit hit the fan. The way the insurance companies work, is your insurance company is going to get sued, don't stress about it, that's why you have one, but then your insurance company's gonna go to the manufacturer, manufacturer will go, nope, we don't use those springs on our equipment. Now, that doesn't mean you're personally responsible. It just means that your insurance company is going to take the fall for it and they don't get to pass the buck off to somebody else. Again, don't stress about it but you need to make sure that if you are making changes to your equipment that the clips that you buy go with the springs because the springs and the clips that they sell those springs have been tested for the torque of the springs. So if you go to the Home Depot, or I don't know what you call it in another country, those clips are not tested for the (inaudible) I don't know Home D. They didn't sponsor this episode. So (inaudible) we keep saying their name, but if you're gonnaBrad Crowell 11:49 I bleed orange.Lesley Logan 11:50 Do you remember that okay, you guys. There's a reel, there's a reel where this girl she's like I have never pronounced an L so hard as when I went into the hardware store and said I need to buy some (inaudible) but anyways, okay, when you you don't want to so the moral the story don't buy your clips at a hardware store. Whatever springs you buy buy clips from that manufacturer because they are tested for the torque and tension of the spring and pressures about to happen keep that in mind. If you're gonna make changes people do this all the time. That doesn't mean it's right it just don't stress about it. Brad Crowell 12:32 It's an FYI. Lesley Logan 12:32 Just an FYI. Brad Crowell 12:33 Shawn, thank you for that question on YouTube. And if you would like to leave a question for us, where should they go? Lesley Logan 12:40 Oh, you can just leave it anywhere. Apparently we just pick them up anywhere. We just pick them up anywhere. So I infusing it into the Be It Pod is much easier. But just like the T the TL didn't listen TL DL. You fast-forward it. Get the flashcards for the Cadillac Deck they are they are they are also labeled for towers and you will have the measurements there. Brad Crowell 13:01 OPC.me/flashcards. Okay, now let's talk about [Steve] Wilson. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1978. After years of misdiagnosis and struggles, including a pivotal stay in a mental institution, he eventually found stability. Beyond writing his book Teetering On a Tightrope: My Bipolar Journey in 2022, [Steve] dedicates his time to facilitating two mental health support groups, providing a hope and understanding to those navigating similar challenges.Lesley Logan 13:37 Yeah, so I have to say like, the more I thought about him, the more I thought about his wife that he's been married to forever. Brad Crowell 13:44 Yeah. She's a rockstar.Lesley Logan 13:45 And when I told my dad about this guy, and my dad was like I said, he has been married for this many years. And he goes, Wow, she's tough. Like, andBrad Crowell 13:53 50-year 50-something years of marriage and for part of it, he was likeLesley Logan 13:58 MisdiagnosedBrad Crowell 13:59 Completely misdiagnosed.Lesley Logan 14:00 Mismedicated. And so I kind of I resonate with that. And I wanted to have him on for some reason. First of all, I fell in love with him in like a pre-interview chat. And he he is, you know, dying as we speak. Like he he didn't tell me why he's dying. But he does. He's dying. So. So I wanted to have him on as quickly as possible because I really love that he is wanting to share and make a mental health something that we're all talking about. And he dedicates his time if you listen to the episode to like helping people talk about their mental health, but also like I just think that it's so it can be so hard and can feel so selfish when you are trying to make your magic happen and someone around you is suffering. And so one of my takeaways is it's very tough job to be a supporter. And you've got to love them. And you know, making sure they have housing and good stuff, but like, you can't, you also can't fix them. And that's the hardest part is that we all want to fix people. You know, I know everyone listening in here, a lot of them are teachers, a lot of them are in the service industry of some kind. And they like, and they're mostly are women and so you're inherently a caregiver who just want to love up and support people. But you, you can support them, but you don't have the answers. Unless you do. Unless you're trained in that. And then you do, like, why I have a client who is a psychologist who totally does, but um, but it can be really difficult, you know, even even her own personal life, she has some family members who have some mental health issues, and she can't (inaudible)Lesley Logan 14:09 You know, like, if it's family, they also know what you do, and it can be resentful, you know, or they can resent it. So yeah, it's tough. I mean, being a supporter.Lesley Logan 15:49 Yeah. And also, like, you know, something that I want to bring up that I think is important we had Lindsay, what's Lindsay's new last name? Lindsay, my old assistant, she did a course for us on Profitable Pilates, about being an advocate. And one of the first things she said, which is she was quoting somebody else, which is like, you can Brad Crowell 16:15 Moore.Lesley Logan 16:16 Lindsey Moore. Lindsey, if you're listening, I'm so sorry, I can't remember your last name. It's not even new anymore. But she, she brought up a person's like, a quote in the industry is like, you could only advocate you can only support someone in the amount that you have energy-wise, like there's a Venn diagram of their needs, and what you have to offer. And it's very, very important that you are acknowledging what you have to offer because if you go beyond that, you now no longer can serve them, or yourself or the people you're responsible for in your life. And I think that can be really difficult when we're watching someone suffer, because we can want a lot of things for them. And he has bipolar disorder. But you know, we know people who have gross narcissism and things like that, like, it's really freaking hard, because you're like, I just want them to take their meds or I just want them to do these things. And you, you can love them, and you can support them, and you can advocate for them in the amount that you actually have. And that's really, really hard for people to live with. Because they want to do more.Brad Crowell 17:20 Yeah, and, you know, I'm sure there's many of you out there who are in a situation right now where you're supporting someone. And you know, what [Steve] was talking about what that was just loving them, you know, he talked about people say, angry things to you. And it's really easy, I guess, easy is the wrong word. But it's, you can get to the point where you just want to snap back and he said, you know, that will never work. It will not work. But yeah, I you know, it just makes me think back through the relationships that I've had in my life and, you know, seeing trying to be there trying to be supportive without also being pulled down yourself. That's really challenging.Lesley Logan 18:10 Yeah. Well, and that's but that's like that whole like, we all ignore. No one listens to security tips anymore on the plane, although we should because the door just blew off. But we like that was Brad Crowell 18:24 Did you hear someone they found somebody's iPhone, it blew out of the plane 16,000 feet it landed, it was still working.Lesley Logan 18:31 What? Yeah, that's crazy. They also found the plug that came out in the first place, which like, yeah, at any rate, listen to the security thing. They say one thing that's very important, put your own air mask on first. And we all tend to give more than we have. And it's just, that's not gonna help anybody. And if you're not an expert in mental health it is okay to seek out an expert. And there's also a lot of groups you know, like in the world of AA and stuff like that. There's Al-Anon there's different, there's different groups for people who have people who suffer from mental health issues so that you can be seen by people who get you because like, you could tell you're, I have friends like you go to tell them a problem and they like just do not they're, it's okay for them to be the wrong person. You know, so, which I think is it's important to acknowledge that sometimes our friends are amazing, our family's amazing, but they're not the right support for us. If you're going with some if you have someone in your life or you yourself have a mental health situation. Brad Crowell 19:33 Well, one thing that I really loved that he said, what that he talked about was after he moved to Arizona, and had the appropriate medical diagnosis and the meds he was on we're actually providing support for him. He really wanted to give back. And so actually, before he even moved, he was starting to do speaking at high schools and stuff. But he said, When he got to Arizona, he was they turned him away. Because he's in his 60s and trying to talk to like 15-year-olds, he wasn't as relatable as they were looking for. So he said, alright, well, I'm gonna go do this anyway. But I'm going to work in support groups. And so he started, he began facilitating two different support groups. And he's been doing that for the last eight years. And you know, his mission. He said, he started that whole thing back in the 90s when he had a clothing store, in Ohio, and two people, two young people, he knew had committed suicide, and that's really took him down the teen route and supporting teens, you know, and then today, you know, he's supporting these groups that are, you know, all ages, but it sounded to me, like his passion is still youth, and really working with youth. Brad Crowell 21:00 And you had a great question for him, you asked him, hey, we got a lot of moms on this program. You know, how do you begin to identify or, you know, what do you do? If your kid is beginning to struggle and they're unwilling to talk to you or they're exhibiting these different signs, and he said, he said, watch your child and notice if there are changes in their moods or actions, and you do not probe that he said, the first telltale sign is that their overall attitude will shift, whether that whether they're playing like, maybe they're escaping into video games, or you notice that their grades are dropping, or they never go outside. You know, these are signs that there's there's very much like something that's mentally, like, they're struggling with something right. And for him, it was abuse or sexual abuse. Right? And his parents he said weren't paying attention, and they wouldn't have known what to do anyway, because nobody was talking about it 50 years ago, (inaudible) more than 50. He was it would have been, he's in the 70s now, he's in his 80's now?Lesley Logan 22:14 I don't know how old he is now. But it was, he was like eight Brad Crowell 22:17 Yeah, he was he was less than 10 years. Lesley Logan 22:19 So young. But you know what's crazy to me is like, we all talk about like, oh, the world was worse now than it was no, it was terrible then Brad Crowell 22:27 Yeah he was raped as an eight-year-old in a movie theater (inaudible). Lesley Logan 22:32 There was no language around that and no one was taught opening up like my parents were very much like, no one's gonna touch you, these are your private parts. You can only be touched here if you give permission like, but like, that wasn't happening. My dad was never told that. Do you know what I mean? Like I like think about my dad's age when I was thinking about Steven, and I was just like, that wasn't happening. We but we pretend like nothing was happening bad back then. But it was. It's just it wasn't on the news it wasn't getting from this location to another location. Brad Crowell 23:02 And yeah, there wasn't the the Internet to disseminate, you know, that this has happened. happenedLesley Logan 23:06 This has and what are the telltale signs? And you know I Brad Crowell 23:08 You don't hear about it. Lesley Logan 23:09 I happened to, this morning, I happened to, I don't know why my news app came up, but and I also don't know why I clicked on this article. But I'm glad I did because I think it's really fitting for this. So Jessica Alba. I don't even know what she does today, in what, but she was interviewed for a magazine. Real Simple's first health issue, mental health issue, she was interviewed for it. And she was very open and honest that she and her daughters go to therapy together. And I was like, wow, that's so interesting that she would share that. And she actually shared how she got her daughters to go to therapy with her. And by the way, every one of my friends who has a daughter, I'm like, just so you know, they're gonna hate you for 10 years minimum, at least, you gotta let it go. You got to be prepared for that. Like they're just going to hate you. But Jessica Alba, she noticed that her daughters and her were having conflicts. And so she actually signed them up for therapy. And she said, this is your hour to tell me everything that you are upset about with me. And so parents listening, if you're trying to get your kiddos, to talk to you what's going on, what a great way to preface this is your vent hour like you can be up you can say everything you don't like about me in this container. And then there's a therapist there who can help you as a parent, articulate what they need, and also can help this kid that you're raising, you know, share what's going on with them. And like I just think it was I loved it. I was like, if my parents had told me, this is my parent venting hour I'm in therapy every week would have loved it. Mom, if you and dad are listening, just saying, that would have been a better marketing strategy.Brad Crowell 24:53 Yeah, she has a 15 and a 12-year-old daughter and then a younger son. Lesley Logan 24:58 So anyways, I think it's really important that we know the signs when you have kids and also just like how to support people that are going through it. So that doesn't affect you in a way that is beyond what you can handle. It's okay.Brad Crowell 25:13 Yeah. He said if you if you do identify, you know, like a dramatic change like those, those things, he said, you need to connect with your kids. So figure out how to connect with them, how to build a relationship with them. Jessica Alba was give her daughters' venting time. He said, it's important that you don't straight up say that there's something wrong with them, and we need to fix it. So we're gonna go to a psychiatrist like, that is probably terrifying for them. Also mortifying for them, because they're probably feeling embarrassed or guilty.Lesley Logan 25:50 Anything wrong with them in high school and junior high, like everybody, butBrad Crowell 25:53 Also like, you know, like I you know, what did he say? He said he didn't tell anybody about his abuse for 30 years, 30 years before he told him what so he was 38 before he ever talked about it. Right? So it's the, the guilt and the fear associated with it, it makes it easy to hide that kind of a thing. And so he said, be gentle in the approach. Yeah. Lesley Logan 26:27 Yeah. I think that's amazing. Brad Crowell 26:29 All right. Let's talk about those Be It Action Items. What bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted action items can we take away from your convo with [Steve] Wilson? He said that it's a terribly long journey ahead, you know, to stabilize mental health. You know, and he was specifically talking about the two different types of bipolar disorder. And he I want to say he had type two, I think that's what he had. But, you know, you had a really interesting conversation about stability. And, you know, he said, we, he said, so many people in this country who are suffering, he said, 60 million people suffer from some kind of mental health, whether it's depression, or bipolar, or whatever. And he said, we could get start, we could start getting some things done if we, as a community, who maybe we are suffering ourselves, or maybe we know someone who is suffering. But the only reason the only way that change will happen in the in mental health in our country, in our communities, is if we become active in voicing, our desire for change for the need for support in this area is so important. I mean, I think that it's again, because of the Internet, it's so prevalent today, it's so, we can easily find all these instances where mental health is a problem today and it feels like there's nothing being done about it. And he said, actually, that there are less, there are less support groups today. There are less college psychiatrists today. There are less therapists today than there were, I don't actually know when the stats are, but in recent years, he said it's on a decline. Yeah. And, you know, a lot of that has to do with the business behind health care in our country. Right? The fact that the insurance companies make it really challenging to get coverage for these things and Lesley Logan 28:43 They make it so challenging that the therapist can't make a living off of it. They don't take it anymore. So like,Brad Crowell 28:50 Otherwise, you're looking at paying out a couple hundred bucks a session. 300 bucks a session.Lesley Logan 28:54 Oh, my God, it's yeah, no, no, it's it's insane. And I don't fault the therapist for not taking insurance because like, I know how hard, in the United States, I know how difficult it is to get paid from insurance companies. You're waiting months. Yeah. And they bring it down to nothing. And so people have bills to pay. And it just needs to be some. That's a whole other topic. At any rate, I there are, what is amazing is there are look in your community. There are some support groups that are out there, it's, you're to find them. But like, you know, I know in Las Vegas, there's different support groups that are based off for different types of people. And there are charities that want to help you there are so you know if you are the person supporting someone who has is mentally ill, I think you know, use your Internet. Thank God we have it.Brad Crowell 29:46 Yeah, I definitely like completely sidetracked and took over your Be It point.Lesley Logan 29:51 Yeah, it's okay. I'm gonna go into it. Brad Crowell 29:52 Well, well, you know, I think we can just you already talked about find in the Internet. He mentioned a company or an organization called NAMI, N-A-M-I, so, you know, find that website, and they have resources and tools on there for those who are suffering from mental health. And then also, you know, he talked about calling your congressperson. So to be quite honest, I mean, that is the easiest possible thing.Lesley Logan 30:18 Everybody, you know, call your congressman, we have a phone number, because there's a, there's a sweatshirt you can buy off Cricut media called call your congressperson. I think it's 222Brad Crowell 30:29 202-224-3121. And we'll put that in the show notes. 202-224-3121. And you can call them and you can tell them, hey, I live in this state, this is my zip code, and they will connect you with your congressperson. And you can just leave them a voicemail, you'll almost never get someone on the phone, you just leave them a voicemail, and you say, hi, you know, my name is this is my zip code and I really, really, really care about mental health. And I think that you, as my congressperson should be fighting on behalf of mental health. And you just need to tell them that that is literally what all you you need to do is call them and just leave that voicemail.Lesley Logan 31:06 And if you live in a different country, I don't know how to have your person's number for you, but I'm sure that's on the Internet as well. And they work for you. Whether you get to vote for them or not. They're supposed to work for you. So you call them you find a way to email them, things like that. Lastly, I just want to say he mentioned that the stigma against mental health in this world is terrible. Specific, it really frickin is I was so, so so proud of my dad the other day, we're driving the car. And we're talking about homelessness. And he said, well, most of them are mentally ill. And I was like, you're right. Thank you. They are. Like they're not like, you're I think people look at homeless people. And they're just like, they should just pull it up from their bootstraps. They could there's a job, there's jobs out there you should get them. Y'all you have to have a physical address for resume. You do. Period. You have to have physical address to get your money from the VA system, you have to have a physical addresses, PO Boxes don't work. Brad Crowell 31:07 So if just if I'm sure none of you have been following along, but I've been supporting a homeless family now for five years, I think, four, four or five years. Yeah, they just finally got an address. Finally. Lesley Logan 32:18 Yeah, so So can you just when you see people who are talking crazy on the sidewalk, I know it scares you. I know it makes you fearful, I know you want to turn away, we have got to stop. Other-ising people who have mental health issues. Because it is a prevalent problem in this country. It's prevalent in this world, there is help out there for the people, for people who can afford it or have access to it. And if you are at all able to make a phone call to your congressman person, please do. And if you've got someone in your life, who's got issues that need support, do not stop until you find them support, because we have to stop, we have to stop making it like they're weirdos. They're not. They're human beings who have hormone imbalance who have a genetic thing. Brad Crowell 33:12 Chemical imbalance.Lesley Logan 33:13 Like, like it's so easy for this all to happen. And you also know what you might be depressed one day. So at any rate, this whole episode was not supposed to be done on a like a low note, my whole point of doing this is like I have seen what mental health issues in my own family have done to my own family and how they can tear people apart or make or strain relationships I have seen we lived in L.A. and we saw the effects of mental health that was unsupported. And I feel I am very, I'm very grateful for how that well this podcast is doing and I wanted to provide a story from someone who has who has actually suffered is suffering from it, who is actually doing amazing things and he's got a great book to help you. If you don't even understand what it's like to have mental health issues, the empathy that you could have after you read this book could be what you need to help you support other people. Brad Crowell 34:10 Yeah, in fact, I think that's a perfect way to to end this. I'm actually going to read you the just the byline on this book here. From [Steve] the title the book is called teetering on a Tightrope: My Bipolar Journey he wrote in 2022. He said, as an energetic normal boy of nine, Stephen W. Wilson would not have guessed that the most horrifying day of his life was lurking just months ahead. From that terrifying day when he was at the theater to a suicide to his suicidal ideations. His attempt to kill his father and his subsequent hospitalization, Teetering on a Tightrope sweeps the reader headlong into the abyss of bipolar disorder. Wilson propels the reader into his sometimes out-of-control mind, inability to perform sexually and overwhelming anger. Despite all that Steven Wilson gushes about the monumental times when he was in a state of normalcy and could enjoy life's golden moments, all centered around his family and his friends. Teetering On a Tightrope shows that those who suffer from bipolar disorder can experience a full and productive life. So there is hope.Lesley Logan 35:17 I'm Lesley Logan. Quote: “Do what helps you to think straight, then you can start taking action.” Steve Judge How are you when something traumatic happens? Do you sit and wallow in self-pity? Do you spring into action right away? Or do you take some time, figure out how to proceed and move ahead carefully? On this episode of Authentic Living with Roxanne, we're privileged to welcome Resilience Expert Steve Judge to share the journey that took him from sitting in a wheelchair to standing on the stage as a keynote speaker and resilience coach. At the age of 28, a devastating car accident left Steve fighting to stay alive and, following life-saving operations, was subsequently told that he may never walk again. However, following a multitude of operations and intensive care from the NHS, he was able to progress forward. Not leaning on his excuses, he set goals, turning his excuses into challenges; he eventually learned to stand and walk again. Steve continued his journey, which took him from wheelchair to world champion in the sport of para-triathlon. Joined today by MLB All-Star and veteran Steve Trachsel. Steve and I chat about growing up in California, why he chose Long Beach State and then going to the college World Series with Jason Giambi. We touch on where he was when he got the call from the Cubbies that he goes drafted, rocketing through the minors and walking into a locker room with Grace, Dunston and Ryno. We talk about playing in the friendly confines, leaving as a free agent and why he always wanted to play in New York. Steve tells us the difficulties of playing in NYC with the media, his September 11th story and his emotions when Piazza hit that iconic HR against the Braves. We reminisce about his first big injury and how he dealt with that mentally, geeking out with some of the All-Stars in ‘96 when he made the team, and when he knew it was time to call it quits. From Steve's dream destination to his return to NYC this year for old timers day, Steve shows why he was always considered one of baseballs good guys! The accelerated pace of innovation in digital health, record-breaking investments in the sector and even some of the technology developed to navigate the pandemic wouldn't have been possible without groundwork laid by The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC). And there's probably no one who understands ONC's past, present and future role better than Steve Posnack.Steve is a fixture at ONC, joining a year after it was formed in 2004 and serving for the past 16 years in various capacities through four administrations. Since 2019, Steve has served as Deputy National Coordinator, playing an integral role in policy development, technology initiatives and investments, budget prioritization and industry-wide coordination. In this episode of Healthcare is Hard, Steve gives a background and history of ONC, explaining how it fits into the Department of Health and Human Services and the overall role it plays in the federal government. He shares insights that anyone in the healthcare innovation ecosystem should understand and his conversation with Keith Figlioli covers a number of topics including:Wins and regrets of ONC. As someone who has been at ONC for nearly its entire history, Steve has a rare vantagepoint to reflect on initiatives that have gone smoothly and lessons-learned for those that haven't. For example, he discusses successes and challenges of Meaningful Use, recognizing its imperfections, but all the innovation that it made possible as well.Cybersecurity in healthcare. Steve entered ONC after earning a dual master's degree in cybersecurity and health policy from Johns Hopkins University, giving him a unique skillset to address the security issues with healthcare IT that are becoming increasingly more critical. He talks about the need for better cyber hygiene industry-wide and shares thoughts about meeting that goal. But he doesn't predict any federal mandates for security in the near future.Improving data quality. According to Steve, poor data quality is a sore point for public health professionals and an area where the private sector can help in order to benefit everyone. He says the people tasked with tracking and consolidating data spend precious time doing “data detective work,” and it's been especially challenging through the pandemic. This requires looking upstream to know where data is coming from and where it's going to figure out how gaps occur and how to address them. The future role for ONC. Taking all of ONC's accomplishments into account, Keith and Steve discuss if there's more work to be done, or if the public sector should start taking over. From Steve's perspective, there's a lot for the private sector to build on, but he also says there's a lot the industry is still asking ONC to push forward. As just two examples, he talks about how work around the social determinants of health and the convergence of clinical and research operations still need broader coordination. To hear Steve and Keith talk about these topics and more, listen to this episode of Healthcare is Hard.

Welcome to the security box, podcast 29. On this episode of the podcast, what seems to be the problem with messaging applications such as Whatsapp, Signal and others when it comes to their security? What do you think of for cloud security for 2021 as the pandemic continues? We'll have news, notes, questions, comments and more including bits from Sans News bites, Trend Micro and more. Topics Security Now episode 802 was released and broadcasted the week of January 19, 2020. On this podcast, are we really concerned about what application we choose to use to message? Steve says that it doesn't honestly matter, as metadata isn't all that big of a deal. Who really cares if phone numbers, time of messages, and even how long audio messages may be? There are apps discussed for more private communication, but metadata doesn't cover the content of the message itself. From Steve's introduction taken from his security now page he writes in part: Then we wrap up by looking at various aspects of the frenzy caused by WhatsApp's quite predictable move to incorporate its users' conversation metadata into Facebook's monetization ecosystem. This segment lasts roughly 20 minutes as I play the segment for all to hear. What do you think about this? What about cloud security for 2021? The Top Worry In Cloud Security for 2021 is the Trend Micro article, and I found a video on their youtube page that seems to voice the article. We'll play this video and we'll discuss. Cloud Dynamics: Top Cloud Security Challenges for 2021 is the video. Your thoughts are welcome. For complete news notes, please see the tech blog for details. Thanks so much for listening!

Welcome to the first episode in a series where we reflect on the lessons given to us by our previous guests. This episode is a deep focus on security champions — developers with extra training who provide input from the security side of things. Our first perspective comes from episode 59 featuring Steve White, Field CISO of Pivotal, now a part of VMware. Steve shares his enthusiasm for security champion programs and speaks about their role in helping their teams make incremental security changes. After talking about why we should be moving security into the early development cycle, Steve gives advice on giving developers one security problem to focus on at a time. From Steve, we dive into episode 42 where we spoke to Kate Whalen from The Guardian. She highlights the value of organizing meetings for developers who are interested in security. These spaces, she explains, are for engineers to ask questions and come to an understanding that security is a shared responsibility. Next, we listen to Omer Levi Hevroni from episode 24, who was a maven for Asurion — their version of a security champion. He talks about the productivity challenges of being a security champion and needing to complete your tasks. Mirroring Kate's points, Omer emphasizes the importance of having a community to share your experiences with and how conferences and online channels like Slack can serve this need. Our last perspective is provided by Yashvier Kosaraju from episode 66. Yashvier discusses having a security partner on a security team to complement having a security champion on the development team. We talk about the advantages of this system as it allows you to perform a security review on a project as it's being created, ensuring that timelines aren't affected. Our guest's experiences are filled with insight and wisdom. Tune in for more on how you can develop your own security champion program.
Are scientists born or made? In Episode 1 we hear about the early years of Professors Steve Simpson and David Raubenheimer, and their childhood investigations into the natural world. From Steve's high school reconstructions of a cow skeleton to David's childhood hypothesis about the harmfulness of bees, we see how two schoolboys grew into two world-renowned scientists. We learn of their meeting at Oxford University and the early experiments with locusts that led to their groundbreaking findings about human nutrition. Along the way we discuss how curiosity makes room for the tenacity to go your own way as a scientist and challenge long-held 'truths' about the world. The Ferment Podcast - Conversations About Worship And Transformation
Steve Cuss is the author of the influential book, "Managing Leadership Anxiety: Yours and Theirs” (published by NEXT Leadership Network), and serves as lead pastor at Discover Christian Church in Broomfield, CO. On today's episode, Steve and Adam discuss chronic anxiety and its effect on our personal lives, our teams, and the society in which we live. This is an important conversation, especially in the current global pandemic. From Steve's website: I love leaders, and I see how much pressure they carry. My particular concern is to bring relief by equipping them with tools for individual and team health. I especially enjoy helping leaders break long stuck patterns in themselves and their organizations. I cut my teeth on leadership anxiety when I served as a chaplain at a level one trauma hospital. The hospital sent us into every conceivable human experience and we had nothing but our wits and the presence of God to get us through. In that baptism of fire, I learned how to pay attention to what was going on under the surface of my own life, and also the dynamics between family members. One of the supervisors was Murray Bowen's student, so I was steeped in family systems theory and then later studied it and cybernetics more formally in graduate school. My unique experience and training deepened my leadership capacity to manage anxiety and notice it in groups. I have sixteen hundred hours of supervised ministry in Clinical Pastoral Education. I hold a Master of Divinity from Emmanuel Christian Seminary where I focused on Hebrew Scriptures and Family Systems. My thesis was based on the Hebrew Scriptures' dignity laws in Leviticus and Exodus and how a suburban church can engage local and global poverty through the lens of reciprocity and dignity rather than charity. Since 2005, I have served as Lead Pastor of Discovery Christian Church in Broomfield, Colorado, an innovative and entrepreneurial church that has grown from 150 to more than 1000 in weekly attendance. The church intentionally welcomes spiritual seekers and skeptics and is passionate about partnerships that break the local and global poverty cycle. I have also served at a mega church in Las Vegas, on a ranch for struggling teens, and as a youth minister in the Appalachian region. I was privileged to grow up in Perth, Western Australia, in an adventurous family of origin. After moving to the United States for theological study, I married Lisa and together we have two sons and a daughter, in whom I take great delight. When I am not working, you can find me laughing with my family, knee-deep in a trout stream, or trying a guitar I cannot afford at a local music store.
The February 2017 Mission show was one of our editor's first live Odyssey events, and it was also an early milestone in the storytelling career of Steve Braun, one of Odyssey's most peerless volunteers. Steve told the assembled audience about all the reasons he considers himself mission-driven, not obsessed. Although, sometimes, also obsessed. From Steve's Odyssey bio: A recent graduate of the U of A School of Government and Public Policy with a Masters of Public Administration, Steven Braun works as a 911 Communications Specialist Supervisor for fire and EMS. On his return to school after 30 years, Steven found that most classes required some sort presentation and that he suffered from an extreme fear of public speaking. His solution: standing alone on a stage under a single light, microphone in hand, telling embarrassing stories about himself. Not only did it work for school presentations, Steven found himself hooked on written and oral storytelling, and now volunteers with Odyssey, fumbling his way through website administration. Prior to his career in public safety, Steven worked as a chef for 26 years in New York and Tucson, where he was a partner at the legendary, but sadly defunct, Boccata Bistro Caffe. Steven has been married to Phyllis for 33 years and they have one child, Jax. To date, Steven's published works include two recipes in an out of print cookbook, but he's hoping to change that in the future. Stay tuned for more… This episode was performed and recorded in front of a live audience at The Screening Room in Tucson, AZ, on February 2nd, 2017, and was curated by Molly McCloy. I sat down with good friend and artist Steve Loya for this week's podcast, and had a good conversation about making art, being kind, and not seeing life and art as a competition. I have known Steve for nearly 30 years having met as freshmen at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 1991. It has be great being an eye witness to Steve's journey as an artist and an educator. A Bachelor of Science in Art Education major from Edinboro University of PA, Steve's work is motivated by a strong desire to communicate and express visually something beyond words or spoken language, however serious or playful his approach and subject matter may be. His work has been exhibited in solo exhibits, juried and group shows, galleries and small businesses throughout the Northern Virginia region, DC, NV, PA, MD, NY as well as in Japan, Greece, and the UK. As a medical person. I can tell you that incorrectly diagnosing a disease or condition very often results in bigger issues that you started with! We talked last week about how the writing is in the wall for our nation if we do not change, and how we as the people of God have failed to make the stand we should have against evils we see around us! We talked about how we as Christians have been lulled into submission, like fallow ground we have hardened our hearts to what God calls sin. Hosea 10:12 (ESV Strong's) Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you. In this series I want to resensitise what has for many years become desensitised. We are so desensitised that we often do not even recognise sin, let alone stand against it. I believe that it is time we break up the crusty, hard shell of our lives, recognise sin for what it is and see again through God’s eyes. In this message I’m going to attack the whole political correctness movement, because I believe that our society has lost the plot when it comes to what you can and cannot say. If you are a fan of PC, I apologise in advance for offending you, but I for one am over it! I fully expect to face some sort of attack, but somebody has to stand and speak out! Let me ask the question… WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO SIN? Part of the problem our society faces is that we don’t call sin “sin” these days, because sin gives rise to guilt, and our culture has declared war in guilt! What used to be called homosexuality is now called an alternative lifestyle. What used to be called fornication is now called a meaningful relationship, What used to be called adultery is now called having an affair, What used to be called a tomboy is now called a transgender, What used to be called abortion is now called family planning……. David wrote, Psalms 38:17-18 (ESV Strong's) For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me. I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin. The Hebrew word for iniquity is AWVONE which means sin, perversity or guilt. But our society has endeavoured to remove guilt as an emotion from the dictionary. Psychologist Dr Dwayne Dyer describes guilt as “the most useless of all behaviours,” and “nothing but a neurosis.” In our modern world, apparently no one is supposed to feel guilty. Guilt is not conducive to dignity and healthy self-esteem. So while our society encourages sin, it will not tolerate the guilt sin produces! Guilt, they tell us, takes all the fun out of life, and columnist Ann Landers even said, “The most painful, self-mutilating, time- and energy-consuming exercises in the human experience is guilt.” THE WRONG PRESCRIPTION If you stand back and look at society, you will recognise certain tactics that the enemy has employed to remove feelings of guilt for what we do and the way we behave. We’re told that if we take away guilt, everyone’s self esteem will improve and we will all be better. Trouble is, it’s the wrong prescription, and what society prescribes is actually making the moral problems more entrenched. What society is doing is not healing people, and it’s not solving the problem! We have sinners who feel no guilt but feel good about themselves, they have replaced self examination with self esteem. So what exactly are the experts prescribing for our society’s ills? 1. LEGALISATION Psalms 94:20 (ESV Strong's) Can wicked rulers be allied with you, those who frame injustice by statute? A classic way of removing guilt is simply to legalise something. This is what we saw last year, with changes to the definition of marriage, and for many western government, it is a common tool to remove feelings of guilt from the populace. Take marijuana for example. It is now a legal drug in many states of the US, and sadly states like Oregon and Colorado have found that hen legal younger and younger children are smoking dope, and that it damages young brains more and is affecting their psyche drastically. Prostitution is now legal here, and the main argument is the health of sex workers. The real argument is the increased tax revenue, but that’s another story. Hard core porn is now legal and readily available. Heroin is not legal, but the government provides needles and safe places to shoot up. The thing is, if you legalises or legitimise these destructive behaviours, more people do them more often because they are more available! You cannot legislate heart changes. I appreciate the fact that we have a Christian Prime Minister, but he cannot legislate life changing commitments or changes of lifestyle, addictions or behaviour. Only Jesus can transform your life, and only the Holy Spirit can empower you to live the life you want! 2. TERMINOLOGY Isaiah 5:20 (ESV Strong's) Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! We are skilled at renaming things so as to remove guilt. A few decades ago if I said I was gay you’d think I was happy… not so today! Living together when you are not married is now officially called a common law marriage. I noticed that instead of calling gay marriage what it is, they used the inoffensive term “marriage equality,” because after all, who doesn’t want equality in our society? No greater example exists of using terminology to counteract the guilt produced by sin than in the abortion industry. It should be called abortion, or better still baby murdering, but it is sanitised by using terms like termination, pro choice and family planning. We do not call the victim of abortion a baby, we use the term foetus, and what terms like this do is desensitise the incredible guilt of taking a life. 3. VICTIMISATION Probably the greatest tool to remove guilt from our society is by making sinners into victims. Psychologists are inventing new diagnoses every day and handing out labels like lollies, but the underlying message of this is this… “It’s not your fault, it’s a disease or psychological syndrome.” Now I am not saying that diseases or mental illness doesn’t exist, I’m just suggesting that many who get such labels aren’t actually diseased but they use the diagnosis as a way to justify their actions and excuse the guilt they feel over their sin. If I can blame a disease, my parents, my upbringing, my friends, my school, my job, my partner or anyone or anything else, then I am personally absolved of blame or guilt. It’s not my fault you see… it’s always someone else’s! Listen, God hasn’t called us to be victims, He’s called us to be Victors! Romans 8:37 (ESV Strong's) No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. Conquerors don’t shift blame, or put their head in the sand, they face their opposition and they win! 4. REDUCING CONSEQUENCES This inevitably happens when every sin is described in terms of a disease, and treated as such. We don’t blame cancer patients for their disease, and using the same logic we absolve sinners from the guilt associated with their sin. So thieves have kleptomania, gamblers have an addiction, adulterers are sex addicts and rebelling teenagers have Oppositional Defiance Disorder! Since everybody is a victim, not a sinner, from children to adults, it seems logical that we reduce or even do away with any punishment… here’s some real life examples... A man who was shot and paralyzed while committing a burglary in New York recovered damages from the store owner who shot him, the jury being told he was a victim of society, driven to crime by economic disadvantages. Because of the storeowner’s callous disregard of the thief’s plight as a victim, the poor criminal will be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. A large settlement was paid, and several months later, the same man, still in his wheelchair, was arrested while committing another armed robbery. Bernard McCummings mugged and brutally beat an elderly New York man in the subway, McCummings was shot while fleeing the scene. Permanently paralysed, he sued and won $4.8 million in compensation from the New York Transit Authority. The man he mugged, a cancer patient, is still paying doctor bills, while McCummings, the mugger—whom the courts deemed the greater victim—is now a multimillionaire. Look at the kinds of sentences dished out by our courts and many would agree that the consequences for crime have definitely been reduced in many areas. However, God says the wages of sin is death, and Galatians 6:7-8 (ESV Strong's) Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. THE DEATH OF COMMON SENSE Somewhere in the middle of all this political correctness common sense has died! Romans 1:22 (ESV Strong's) Claiming to be wise, they became fools, Listen to this poem I found by Anna Russell… I went to my psychiatrist to be psychoanalyzed to find out why I killed the cat and blacked my husband’s eyes. He laid me on a downy couch to see what he could find; so this is what he dredged up from my subconscious mind. When I was one, my mommy hid my dolly in a trunk; and so it follows naturally that I am always drunk. When I was two, I saw my father kiss the maid one day, and that is why I suffer now from klep-to-men-I-A”. At three I had the feeling of ambivalence towards my brothers, and so it follows naturally I poisoned all my lovers. But I am happy; now I’ve learned the lesson this has taught; THAT EVERYTHING I DO THAT’S WRONG – IS SOMEONE ELSE’S FAULT. Our society is pervaded by the victim mentality, which has overcome our common sense! We are told by the media and the government that if you feel a certain inclination, no need to control it, you have the right to express it, however you feel, whenever you like. You are the victim of your genes (even though science can not confirm this), or your upbringing, or your diagnosed condition. So if you have the genes of a homosexual you are free to express it. If you have the genes of a woman, even though you are clearly a man, feel free to express it. If you have the genes of a serial killer… better not express that! These days everything wrong with humanity is likely to be explained as an illness. What we used to call sin is more easily diagnosed as a whole array of psychological disabilities, and we dare not call it sin, because then it might make you feel guilty! Now I know this is not very PC correct, but I was talking with Fiona, a trained psychotherapist about this recently. While there certainly are genuine mental disorders, at what point does ADD, ADHD and ODD become bad parenting, or at what point does IED, Intermittent explosive disorder become a badly behaved jerk with a bad temper? Proverbs 28:13 (ESV Strong's) Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. The therapy industry diagnoses sin as sickness, telling people they are desperately sick and therefore not really responsible for their wrong behaviour. This has led to the so called wise in our society believing foolishness, and us foolish Christians seeing the truth, but being afraid to say it! IS OUR SOCIETY WEARING NEW CLOTHES? Hans Christian Anderson wrote of two swindlers who promise an emperor a new suit of clothes that they say is invisible to those who are unfit for their positions, stupid, or incompetent – while in reality, they made no clothes at all. They made everyone believe the emperor’s clothes were wonderful, just invisible to them. When the emperor parades before his subjects in his new "clothes", no one dares to point out that they do not see any suit of clothes on him for fear that they will be seen as unfit or stupid. Finally, a child cries out, "But he isn't wearing anything at all!" This is exactly what is happening right here in our society today! We are told to be open minded, but we are so open minded our brains fall out. We are told to be politically correct, but the things we have to agree to as correct make no sense. Last week on 60 Minutes they reported on a transgender AFL player. Starting as a man and playing for the Australian men’s handball team, he/she wants to now play women’s AFL. This athlete stands 6 foot 3, and weighs 100 kg or nearly 16 stone. Bigger, stronger, faster than most women This is the obvious result of the current attitude towards PC! Isn’t it time someone stood up and said, “But you’re not wearing any clothes!” Isn’t it time someone broke ranks and said, “You can add bits or remove bits, you can wear a dress or a pair of stubbies, you can change your name From Steve to Eve, but according to science you are still XX or XY, right? And this applies to so many areas of modern life, not just gender or sexuality. It applies to the victim mentality, promoted by professionals and swallowed by everybody else, and no one is courageous enough to say, “But this doesn’t make sense!” Behaviour unacceptable by society for centuries is now tolerated or even promoted, even things we all agree are wrong, like stealing, embezzlement, murder, slander, and so on, are downgraded or explained away because apparently no one is guilty any more! VICTIMS BECOME A SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY The Disease-model therapy doesn’t cure these victim conditions, it compounds them, and no one has the courage to point out how ridiculous this is, for fear of being attacked and called stupid or narrow minded. By removing any sense of guilt, and making people feel they are the victims, they become helplessly bound for life to their affliction, and their diagnosis often becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy? And we are the narrow minded fools! Charles J Sykes said, “This is a formula for social gridlock: the irresistible search for someone or something to blame colliding with the unmovable unwillingness to accept responsibility.” Once upon a time, when society affirmed the concept of personal responsibility, citizens were expected to contribute to society. They were encouraged to ask not what their country could do for them but what they could do for their country. Now that everyone is a victim, however, people think they have every right to demand society’s benevolence without giving anything in return. I don’t want to ever work, but I demand that you give me income, rent help, free medical and so on! Psalms 32:5 (ESV Strong's) I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Here’s the thing… while ever you are trying to shift the responsibility for your sin you will always be a victim! You cannot receive forgiveness for, something you don’t even recognise! Our nation needs honesty and integrity, not more and more victims dependent on drugs and therapy with recently made up diagnoses! I believe that we, followers of Jesus, can bring a voice of integrity and courage to the twisted, politically correct but morally bereft landscape, but we must do this in love, not as self righteous, legalistic Pharisees! HOW CAN WE START TO BRING CHANGE IN OUR SOCIETY? I said right at the beginning, you cannot change people’s hearts by passing legislation. Equating their sin with a disease will also not solve the problem, just entrench the issue in their lives! So how can we start to see change in our nation, and how can we dislodge the victim mentality? 1. RECOGNISE IT STARTS WITH US Like it or not, we have to lead the way here. If we swallow the whole disease diagnosis, if we constantly shift the blame and see ourselves as victims, we will be part of the problem, and we cannot lead our nation towards the solution… which is Jesus Christ! 1 Peter 4:17 (ESV Strong's) For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 2. EXAMINE YOURSELF One of the greatest impedances you face to growing in Christ is failing to carefully and properly examine yourself. That’s why David wrote, Psalms 139:23-24 (ESV Strong's) Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! Until we stop glossing over or dressing up our sin, we will never be forgiven. The first step to any truly effective remedy for all mental and emotional afflictions is an honest assessment of one’s own sin and the acceptance of complete responsibility for one’s own moral failings. 3. ACKNOWLEDGE GUILT AND STOP SHIFTING THE BLAME We as the people of God need to shine our light throughout our society, and if we are to shine we need to stop shifting the blame, and not be afraid of guilt.. John MacArthur said, “Guilt functions in the spiritual realm like pain in the material realm. Pain tells us there is a physical problem that must be dealt with or the body will suffer harm. Guilt is a spiritual pain in the soul that tells us something is evil and needs to be confronted and cleansed.” I understand, guilt is not fun and it does hurt and it does produce grief, but for the believer it goes on to produce repentance and salvation and leaves no regret 2 Corinthians 7:10 (ESV Strong's) For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. So don’t be afraid to look at yourself properly and actually acknowledge that you’ve sinned. 4. CONFESS YOUR SIN Proverbs 28:13 (ESV Strong's) Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. Let me say it again, until you recognise sin as sin, as that which separates you from God, you cannot be forgiven. Don’t cover up your sin… confess it, and let the blood of Jesus cover it over! You and I sin, it’s a fact, and until we see that as an affront to a holy God, it will bring us death. 1 John 1:8-9 (ESV Strong's) If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. So we, the people of God, need to lead the way for our nation and our people. Let’s not deceive ourselves and put our actions and thoughts down to upbringing, down to some kind of mental illness or some kind or cultural influence. I’m calling the church to lead the way and just call sin sin! Now please understand, I am not saying that mental illness doesn’t exist! It certainly does exist, and our counsellors and psychologists care for those people well. There are some people I know who have a mental illness for sure, and I believe that Jesus can heal mental illness just like He can heal physical illness! We need to pray for those with genuine mental illness and believe for healing. But today I want us as a Church to pray for forgiveness of our sins, great and small. I’m asking you to commit yourself to honest, open, even painful examination of your life, and heartfelt confession of your sin. You may or may not have some kind of diagnosis, but I’m asking you to examine yourself. It’s time we as the people of God to call sin what it is… it’s sin! As Christians, we cannot be salt and light in the world if we cherish our own sin, so today I want to challenge all of us to repent of our sin, whatever it is, and get right with God.

From Daniel in Brasil Also, can you suggest any free or inexpensive one-time cost replacement software for iPhoto? From Steve in Pennsylvania I am trying to understand why so many cameras come with high-quality video. I think that it makes sense to shoot video on a dedicated video camera and stills on a dedicated stills camera. Am I crazy? From Ted in Seattle, WA With the advent of such high-quality image stabilization on some cameras and lenses, are tripods as valuable or as necessary as they used to be? From Helen in San Rafael, CA I would like to photograph race cars at an Indycar event. What shutter speed should I use to freeze the action? From Theron in Washington, D.C. I hear Scott say you sometimes need to “bump the focus” when photographing birds in flight and trying to get the most out of the autofocus. I think I understand but could you please explain? From Jay in Anchorage, AK I want to save my photos for uploading to portfolio web sites but all my images are too big and get rejected or take too long to upload. I am new to photography and want to find out what the best practice is for Web image optimization. From Jarred in Ocean Shores, WA I know that Rick Sammon travels all over the world and I love his portraits of people in their native lands. My question is how do you approach people from other cultures to get permission to make their portrait? I am always too shy to do that. From Jessica in Center Valley, PA I am photographing by a lake near my home and there are lots of commercial buildings that I do not want to reflect in the lake. Short of learning how to remove these reflections in post, is there something I can do to remove the reflections in-camera? Is that what an ND filter does? From Cathy in Inver Grove Heights, MN I’ve seen people on camera forums talking about super fast lenses - in the f/1.2 to f/1.8 range. Is it possible to use lenses like this wide open? Wouldn’t the depth-of-field be too narrow to accomplish much? From Butch in Nashville, TN I want to photograph planes taking off and landing at my local airport. Do I need special permission from anyone to do that? Welcome, Medicare Nation! I’ve had a busy two weeks and have just returned from a conference in Miami for the National Osteoporosis Foundation. I have been flooded with emails, so today’s episode will be a Q&A session in which I address as many of those questions as possible. Join me! From Steve in Texas: “I’m turning 65 in July and your program has been helpful to me. Can I change Part D prescription options over time without having to pass insurability determinations?” The options can be confusing. You can change Part D plans during the annual enrollment period, from October 15-December 7. You can change plans every year, if needed. You should review your plans yearly, based on your prescription needs and usage. From Dottie: “I have a Medicare Advantage Plan with Blue Cross. When I get the benefits summary, do the fees reflect those set by Medicare or do the doctors make these up?” Every Medicare insurance carrier negotiates with each doctor and facility so they have a contract for how much the doctor gets paid for services. The summary shows what the doctor usually charges, what your plan covers, and what your co-pay amount is. What you see is what the doctor normally charges, but NOT what you will pay. The negotiated rate will be applied by your plan and you pay your co-pay or co-insurance. From Dottie, the 2nd part of her question: “If I want to change to another Medicare Advantage Plan, can I keep my same doctor even if he isn’t in the network?” Remember, Medicare Advantage is all about being in a network. It’s a “pay as you go” plan because you only pay for what you need. If your doctor is not in network, you have to decide what’s more important. Do you have to stay with that doctor or do you value the plan’s benefits more? You may need to change plans or pay out of pocket. This depends upon if your plan is an HMO or a PPO. A PPO has an out of network option but you will pay a higher co-pay. An HMO in Medicare Advantage doesn’t allow any out of network options. I hope these questions and answers have been helpful to you. If need be, we’ll add another show each week just to cover your questions. So, keep those coming! Email me: support@themedicarenation.com. Remember, you can visit www.medicare.gov for more information. Do you have questions or feedback? I’d love to hear it! My name is Steve Weeks, and a few years back, I released a CD of Geocaching music called ”Found It!” by the Travel Bugs.I just wanted to let you know that I’m about to launch a Kickstarter campaign to see if I can fund another CD of Geocaching music. The campaign will launch on 10/15/2014 and will last 30 days. Since the campaign duration is so short, the real trick is trying to reach the Geocaching community in time, so I’d greatly appreciate any help getting the word out on 10/15. Despite the seemingly risqué title, the music, like the last CD, will be family friendly. Thanks a million and happy geocaching! The Genealogy Gems Podcast with Lisa Louise Cooke - Your Family History Show
I've been enjoying time at home getting the new house decorated. I have a wonderful sort of wall niche area in the living room that is perfect for a family history display, so the wheels are turning on what I want to do there. I've been pinning lots of ideas on Pinterest for that. And of course I'm getting in my time with my grandsons Davy and Joey. Now that Joey is a year and a half and running all over the place, it's just playtime bedlam at Sha Sha's house. I'll be speaking in Round Rock, TX at the How to Reopen and Work a Genealogical Cold Case But soon May will be here and that means I'll be heading to the National Genealogical Society Conference in Richmond Virginia. And we are going to do something very unique at NGS this year. In addition to my three scheduled presentations, we've got ourselves some extra booth space this year, and I'll be giving what we are calling Outside the Box Sessions. You know how it is, you head to a big conference, and you're running for one 1 hour session to the next. And they are usually pretty big classrooms. Well, we are going to getting outside of that box, and holding 30 minute sessions in our booth area on the topics you've told me you want most. As presenters we don't get to have the final say on which of our presentations is selected for the main conference, so it's really exciting to have this unique way of offering the topics you ask us for. It's a smaller intimate setting, the sessions will be packed with tips you can start using right away, all participants will get a free ebook of the handouts for those quickie sessions, we'll have prizes and you'll even have some treats to nibble on. I am really excited about doing this, and I think you'll find it refreshing, fun and informative. I'll doing four sessions – one each day of the conference Ancestral Time Travel with Google Earth Evernote Quick Tips for Genealogists Tablet Tips and Tricks for Genealogists Google Search Strategies And, I've invited two of my dearest friends, Janet Hovorka of Family Chartmasters, and The Photo Detective Maureen Taylor to join me and present some of their most popular topics! So in all, you'll have a dozen ½ hour sessions to choose from to reinvigorate your genealogy research. If you want to get outside the box, come hand out with us, get the ebook, nibble on some treats and get away from the huge crowds. New Videos at the Genealogy Gems YouTube Channel: with Drew Smith with Brian Edwards With Michael Cassara A conversation with long time Genealogy Gems listener Michael Cassara who presented a session at RootsTech this year and I thought it was so interesting I asked him to sit down with me to talk more about it. Michael shares one of the ways that he likes to give back to the genealogy community. He buys old inexpensive photographs and does his best to track down family members today and get those ancestors back in to the hands of their families. And he shares some of techniques he uses to do that which you could certainly use in your own family history research. MJ watched the video and left this comment: “I sooo agree with the karma of sharing our genealogy and our photos. I love the Find a Grave / BillionGrave photo idea. And I know myself about good karma. I found some studio photos of a distant relative, contacted a direct descendant and sent the photos to him. He wrote back and said "my Dad looks just like his grandmother, and never knew it before! And what a gift for my son." A few weeks later a postcard collector wrote me and asked if I wanted postcards sent by my grandfather. You bet! She sent 3 envelopes full with photos of my grandparents, my great grandparents and possibly my great great grandmother as well as aunts, uncles and cousins. I had never seen most of them before. What a gift.” Go to and watch the video and leave your comment about your experiences. Not all Family History is Happy Memories In what seems to be the exact opposite of the usual obituary you come across as you are searching through newspapers, The Blaze reported that a Reno newspaper has removed an obituary supposedly submitted by children glad their mother was dead. The obituary was published in the Reno Gazette-Journal last September in acknowledgement of the death of Marianne Theresa-Johnson Reddick. “Marianne Theresa Johnson- Reddick born Jan 4, 1935 and died alone on Sept. 30, 2013. She is survived by her 6 of 8 children whom she spent her lifetime torturing in every way possible. While she neglected and abused her small children, she refused to allow anyone else to care or show compassion towards them. When they became adults she stalked and tortured anyone they dared to love. Everyone she met, adult or child was tortured by her cruelty and exposure to violence, criminal activity, vulgarity, and hatred of the gentle or kind human spirit…” Read more: Nobody's family is perfect. Certainly mine isn't. But I do think that one of the incredible things that Family history can do is shed light on the truth, and provide the power to change things for the next generation and make a difference. I'll never forget back in probably about 2008, early on when I first started speaking at conferences regularly, I was at a Family History expo in the exhibit hall, and a local man, who appeared to be homeless, came in to the public hall, and he was absolutely distraught and angry about the pain he endured at the hands of his family, and he was hurt and deeply angry to see the family history expo being held there. In the end security guards helped lead him away, and I felt so sad for him because he was obviously in incredible pain, and he most likely didn't have the ability or resources to actually reap some of the benefits that come from learning about your history, your whole family's history. Not just the line of people who got way off track and caused pain, but as we know there are infinite lines out there, and there's a lot to learn from all of them, so that history does not repeat itself. And just as importantly, that we have the opportunity to discover the gems in our tree, the unsung heroes, people who did do a good job and contributed to society. In the end, we get to pick who we admire, and we get to decide those areas that we will not perpetuate. After all, if our history stays in the dark, it is apt to look and feel even larger and scarier, but it is also apt to repeat itself. I'd love to hear from you on this subject. You don't to share specifics. But how has learning more about your family history empowered you. And if you think it has caused harm, I'd like to know more about that too. Finally, to wrap up this segment before we get to the mailbox, I just want to send out a big thank you to some very nice folks out there in the genealogy community. Evernote for Genealogists Thanks Yous As you probably know by now we published our Evernote for Genealogists quick reference guides, and I just want to take a moment to thank the wonderful bloggers out there who helped spread the word about these 4 page cheat sheets. A big thank you to: Thomas MacEntee: “You know what I love about these guides on Evernote? They are easy-to-use, the information is laid out in a format that makes it easy to find what you need, and it truly is something you can keep referring to as you work your way through Evernote and its features.” Randy Seaver, Amy Coffin of the “I hate to sound like a salesperson, but I found this quick guide to be helpful and extremely easy to read. The tables are concise and the lists of quick keys are impressive. This guide is a keeper.” Renee Zamora of Sue Maxwell, James Tanner, “I had been using extensively for quite some time. But was faced with dilemma when the program began to evolve rapidly. I simply lost touch with all the features being added and did not understand why I ran out of storage space and was shut down when I didn't purchase some upgrade. So, I transferred what I was doing on Evernote and used alternative products. So, solely because of this handy guide, I now understood the product. I already had the program on all my devices so transitioning back is as simple as clicking. What I needed clarified was how the program functioned vis a vis the difference between the "free" version and the "paid" version. With that out of the way, I am back in the Evernote use realm. Now, I probably could have figured out all the stuff from the Evernote website, but this made it easier for me to get going and actually do something.” Thanks again to all the bloggers who took the time to give the guides a test run. They are available in our store both for Windows and for Mac. New RootsMagic Video Our long time podcast sponsor RootsMagic just published a new video I think you'll be very interested in. It's called Importing an Ancestry Family Tree into RootsMagic. Have you been wondering how to do this? Well, now they have a short video that will show you how. Currently this is limited to trees that you are the owner / manager, since Ancestry doesn't appear to allow downloading a tree belonging to someone else. You'll find the MAILBOX: From Jane in Edmonton, Alberta: “Need your advice (as I am sure do thousands of others!!) First of all, let me take time to let you know how much I am enjoying my subscriptions to your Genealogy Gems and your podcasts. I purchased subscriptions at the Alberta Genealogy Conference in Edmonton last year, and have been thoroughly enjoying them. I am still very much a genealogy novice. I have dabbled on Ancestry for a number of years, but have never really had time to devote properly. Last year I decided to try to get a little more serious, and joined the local Genealogy Society, and having retired in December, I finally feel like I should be back on this in earnest, and am wondering if you could give me some needed advice. I love Ancestry.ca, and have also dabbled in Scotland's People, the free BMD Index out of England, and of course, Family Search with the LDS. I am finding, however, that I often end up wandering around in circles and mazes as one thing leads to another, and another, and ... I am sure you know what I am talking about. I'm now wondering if I would be best to take it one person at a time - to find out as much as I can about that person in that point of time, before going on to another. I seem to be jumping back and forth between my Dad's family, my Mom's family, their families, etc. until there are times that I find myself at a certain point, only to wonder "Where was I going with this?" I have started trying to make notes about facts as I spot them, but setting them aside to continue on the current charted course, but find that I end up hopelessly out of order and just as lost. Any advice as to how to attack this would be appreciated more than you can imagine! I am afraid that, sadly, I am one of those individuals who is now wishing I had asked more questions when I was younger, as I am now the "older" generation, and so am relying on my own memories of stories told by my parents and grandparents back when I was young enough that I'm not sure I paid attention. I do have four siblings, but when I speak to them, I often wonder if we all grew up in the same family, as their remembered timelines differ greatly on some events than my own.” You are not along in this genealogical dilemma! It's easy to let the records start to take over and lead you around. One way to combat that is to set a genealogical goal - define what it is you want to know. It might be something very specific about a particular ancestor, or it might just be to fill in the blanks on one particular family. Early in my research focused on one grandparent, and working backwards, I would strive to fill in all the blanks on that person, then their parents, then their siblings. I wouldn't "leave" that family until I felt that I had filled in as much of the family group sheet as possible. In fact, we have sort of lost track of the "family group sheet" in this technological age. But it is an excellent tool for keeping you on track and focused on the blanks that need to be filled. An additional strategy is to have a process for dealing with information that comes your way that is a bit off track. Often we feel like we have to pursue it or we'll lose it. I like to use Evernote (free at ) to capture data that I'm not ready to deal with right now, but definitely want to pursue later. I create an Evernote "notebook" for that family surname, and a note book called "future research". Drag and drop "Future Research" onto the family surname notebook which will create a "stack." Now you can create notes and drop them into the "Future Research" notebook which is inside the applicable family. Add tags to your note like "newspaper," "death record," etc. and some good searchable keywords so that the note will be easy to find when you need it. Now you can capture the item, file it away, and stay focused on the task at hand. If you would like to learn more about how to use Evernote for genealogy I have a quick reference guide (PDF) in my store that will work wonders in keeping you organized. From Mary Jane in KY “Thank you Lisa, I received your ebook fine, and now have it installed on my desktop. I've been watching a lot of your videos, have watched the ones where you had interviews at Rootstech. Each day I watched on my computer, the selected Rootstech programs as they were presented. Last week our Kentucky Genealogical Society and Kentucky Historical Society had an all day Saturday viewing of 10 of the programs given out there. It was a special program that the Kentucky Historical Society and Kentucky Genealogical Society were chosen to participate in viewing - called a Family History Fair. Your program was one of them - How to Use YouTube for Family History: Setting Up Your Own YouTube Channel. And all those syllabi were available for us to print in advance. We had 135 people to attend. We were very privileged and it was much appreciated by a large crowd of people. You are such a pretty gal, with a bubbly personality. Kiss those babies for me. I've just become a great grandmother. I really enjoy your Genealogy Gems, have received your newsletters for several years, but I don't use anything but the computer. It's something about the older generation not being able to learn all these other gadgets.” You can watch free videos from the RootsTech 2014 genealogy conference at From Steve in Cedar Falls, Iowa This is all your fault :) Yes, this is your fault! That sounds ominous, but this is a good thing! I say your fault because you are the one who encouraged me, on your blog, to start blogging about family history. I started two blogs- one for the paternal side and one for the maternal side. The paternal blog is and the maternal blog is . My intent was to create a place where family could see the family history that I had found. But something else happened in addition to this intent. A guy in New York came across my maternal blog and emailed me that he had something I might be interested in. It was about my third great grandfather who was born in Germany. Before he came to America, he was a part of a German colony in Guatemala. I knew that, but had no proof of when and where he married or even where in Germany he was from. This gentleman from New York is originally from Guatemala and is connected to my third great grandmother who was also part of this colony. He sent me a copy of an original church record from Guatemala giving the date they were married in Guatemala AND the name of the town in Germany that he was from and his date of birth. It gets better! The German town was named Rellinghausen. When I put Rellinghausen in Google Earth, it kept taking me to Recklinghausen. Now this Recklinghausen is just north of Essen which is the place that I thought the family was from, so it seemed reasonable to assume this was the place and it had been misspelled in the Guatemala document. I order LDS microfilms from Recklinhausen and found not even one instance of the name from 1816 to the 1840s! So, I ruled out Recklinghausen. Next I entered" Rellinghausen” into Wikipedia and found that Rellinghausen had been a separate town before 1910. In 1910, it was annexed by Essen! That's why it was not showing up on Google Earth! Next step was to contact the diocese in Essen about possible records for this ancestor. With the help of Google Translate, I wrote to the diocese office (found with a Google search) and gave the name and date of birth for this third great grandfather. I received an email back from a church secretary who said she was sending it on to someone who might help. About two weeks later, I received an email from the parish priest from the church in what was once Rellinghausen. Attached was all of the birth information including parents. I probably would have never found this otherwise! So, yes, this is all your fault and I'm VERY happy to blame you! Thanks so very much for the encouragement!” Lisa's Answer: What an incredible story! I will happily take the blame for any part of it. :-) Google Books Tip: Be sure to search Google Books specifically for "Rellinghausen" "happekotte". A few interesting things in there. Google Translate Tip: And remember that using Google Translate will change "happekotte" as well as prevent you from seeing some snippets on books not fully available. So you'll want to search both in German and English. Steve's Reply: “Thank you for the additional ideas for searching. The ideas that you put out there on your podcasts, the contacts someone makes through a blog, looking at possible clues in other public trees on Ancestry ALL go to show you that genealogy is much more fun and much more successful when it involves collaboration. Thanks again.” - Steve From Carol: “I'm new into genealogy. I've worked on my maternal grandfather's side of the tree and had some success. Yay! Now I'm trying to work on my maternal grandmother's side and it is more difficult. I seem to be generating a lot more paper and search theories this time. Is there anything out there that is a digital basic checklist. Something that you can check off - like census, birth record, death record, etc. Love all your Evernote tips!” Free Records Checklists and Forms: Family Tree Magazine Ancestry.com From Kris: “The last few months, I've begun packing up our house in Santa Clara, CA for a major life change. This requires dividing up our 'worldly possessions' into 2 parts (one for France and one for our US home, which will be in Florida). I spent whole days listening to your pod casts (via the app which I love on my iPhone 4s) and made it back to 2011. Your pod casts are wonderful and as the family genealogist (for mine and my husband's family), listening to you gave me renewed energy during the long, tedious days of packing. It occurred to me that after all this effort, I will have much more time to work on my family histories and pursue the huge file I have titled "needs further research." My favorite podcast moments thus far are: listening to your moving challenges as you relocated to Texas (misery loves company : ), the guest who stated that it is 'not advised' to shred original documents after digitizing them, the 'Flip Pal' interview, the daunting task of catching up on technology and the learning curve that comes with that, and your suggestions for all of us to make the family names and dates more interesting, in order to get other family members excited about our family history. Thank you for all you do for genealogists! I met you once at our local library where you gave your Google class, and hope we cross paths again. In the meantime, be kind to yourself. Get well soon! WEDDING IDEAS From Kirsty: “I have some very happy news. I got engaged last week, a very happy time for us. I remember you had talked about a family reunion sometime in the past , and I wonder if you had any tips of getting family history information out of my family while there are all at the wedding.” Lisa's Answer: Congratulations on your engagement! How exciting. I've been busy planning my youngest daughter's wedding. She's getting married in May. I would suggest searching family reunion websites for ideas you can convert to a wedding reception. A search of Google and Pinterest.com should help you locate them. If you have your guests seated at tables, that's a great opportunity to provide an icebreaker that can double as a family history gathering opportunity. You could have a form at each place setting for them to fill out. If you are having a videographer, you could have a short list of questions at each table, and when he comes to their table he records them answering the questions. (What's your earliest child hood memory? Who's the earliest ancestor you have a photograph of? What are three things you remember about Great Grandmother? Etc.) If you they won't be at tables, you could have a family history table (next to another table they are likely to visit such as guest book table) and have your activity there. Let them know that this is their gift to you. You could even have some sort of treat or little sticker they can wear that says "I shared the family history, have you?" (In the U.S. when you vote they often give you a little lapel sticker that says "I voted.") Or you could create the "Sweet Memories Candy Bars" that feature family history that I write about in my book

Dave went back to colllege this week (but is still completely available to help new podcasters). He had a very difficult time getting bookmarks for his books. When he found one, he was amazed at how many times a day he viewed this bookmark. He did some research and found that you can have full color bookmarks create 500 bookmarks for 60.00 (see psprint.com ) or 1000 bookmarks for 94.00 (see brochures.com ) and if your target audience is college students - then I feel this is a decent form of promotion.
