Sie machen Fortschritt. Bislang geht es dabei allerdings in der Regel um das sogenannte automatisierte Fahren, um Assistenzsysteme, um das Fahren auf Autobahnen oder das Einparken. Warum gibt es nicht schon längst richtige Roboterautos? Warum ist der öffentliche Straßenverkehr für Computer derzeit (noch) nicht alleine befahrbar? Und wird er das überhaupt jemals sein? It's not often that you get to chat with a neuroscientist. Still less often to chat with a neuroscientist that is also a doctor. Still less often to chat with a neuroscientist that is a doctor and also autistic. And less often still to chat with a neuroscientist who is also a doctor and also autistic and also a horseman. Finally, it's about a chance in a million, maybe more, to chat with a neuroscientist that is a doctor, is autistic, is a horseman and who is also a renowned horse trainer and published author on horse training and behaviour. Dr Stephen Peters is that man. His book, Evidence Based Horsemanship, is rapidly becoming something of a bible among those who would understand how their horse's brain and their human brain could best come together in working harmony. Of course, for those of us in the Equine Assisted World, whether we are practitioners, clients, or simply curious onlookers – or whether we are the horses upon whom the entire process depends – knowledge of the brain is key. If we are dealing with a physical issue, we first have to reach the person's brain before we can start that therapizing stuff. If we are working with neuro cognitive conditions, a basic working knowledge of the neuroscience of learning and cognition would seem essential – yet very few programs outside of Horse Boy Method offer this. If you are training and maintaining the therapy horse, understanding your own brain as well as, to some extent, that of your four-legged colleague would also seem to be an advantage. One day, the therapeutic approaches will hopefully begin to put neuroscience front and centre of their professional trainings. Axons, dendrites, myelination, BDNF and other neurotrophins, cerebral spinal fluid, the amygdala, cortisol, oxytocin and serotonin, the dance between the re frontal cortex and the rough emotional seas of the limbic system: it's a lot to navigate. In this moment, the psychiatrist and author of ‘The Chimp Paradox', Professor Steve Peters, discusses how there are some early childhood traumas that simply can't be erased. It is a commonly held belief that with enough therapy and time all traumas can be eventually be eradicated. However Professor Peters believes that it is critical we divide traumas between those you can tackle and others that you have to learn to live and deal with. If we don't accept that there are some problems that can't be solved it can actually cause more distress, not only to the people suffering the trauma but even to their therapists and partners. It’s Thanksgiving on 26 November, so this week, we look at the myths behind this American holiday, and particularly the story of the Mayflower, the ship that landed in Plymouth Bay, Massachusetts, 400 years ago. We talk to Jo Loosemore, the curator of the exhibition Mayflower 400: Legend and Legacy at The Box in Plymouth, about the voyage, the settlement and decolonising the story. And then we get the in-depth perspective of Steven Peters, the co-founder of the creative agency Smoke Sygnals and a member of the Wompanoag nation, the native inhabitants of the region around Plymouth Colony, who along with other tribes, had lived there for 10,000 years before the Europeans arrived. Steven Peters, co-author of Evidence Based Horsemanship and Wendy Murdoch continue the discussion from Equine Brain 101 for a deeper understanding of how horses learn and what's best for training. The question "am I safe?" is the key question the horse asked and we need to answer in the affirmative.

James Elliott joined the British Army in 2006, going to 7 Para, Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) into a Fire Support Team to the 3 Para battle group. During his time there he deployed around the world, including to Afghanistan. It would be these experiences that would create a pathway to mental resilience coaching. After his own issues with mental health, James began strength and conditioning coaching at a national league rugby team, where he learned the power of mentoring and development. From this, James was asked to help establish the first ever British Army Parachute Jumping Instructors (APJI) Platoon at RAF Brize Norton. A task in which he relished, being able to apply the same mentoring techniques he had learned within a high performing rugby club, to the young parachute students. It would be at RAF Brize Norton that James also attended several courses in mental health, becoming an instructor, and would also break 2 Guinness world records in feats of endurance in rugby. From this position as an Army Parachute Jumping Instructor, James wrote to the Army HQ, explaining the need for mentorship from credible and experienced soldiers in mental resilience and well being. The email was well received and in early 2018 James was moved from the parachute training school and was placed into Army health, whereby he would help the development and delivery of all mental resilience training, including to special forces and deploying to Estonia to deliver to the soldier's posted there. James developed a very good understanding of how to effectively deliver what is a complicated subject to a wide range of different audiences and contexts. In 2020, James formally terminated his contract with the British Army, now taking his brand of mental resilience and well being training, to a much wider audience, including the Paralympic Rowing Team and a number of other high performing individual's and environments, developing his knowledge of psychology through both academic studies and the practical application of resilience.
