In today's episode, Christina interviews Stewart Roberts, owner of Maia Kai, on the importance of understanding finances in business. Stewart shares his extensive experience in the back office accounts and funding side of recruitment for over 24 years. He highlights the value of non-exec finance advisory services for recruitment agencies and emphasizes the need for directors to have a solid grasp of their financials. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's crucial for businesses to prioritize understanding their finances from the very beginning. Hiring a non-executive financial director can provide valuable insights and guidance, even for smaller businesses. Monthly management accounts can help businesses stay on top of their numbers and make informed decisions. Outsourcing tasks like bookkeeping, accounting, and IT can be cost-effective and efficient for businesses of all sizes. Accountants should not only provide financial services but also actively help businesses succeed and grow. BEST MOMENTS "I think people think if they get these softwares it's going to actually eliminate the need of their accountant." "I always say to get monthly management accounts. I know a lot of people would say quarterly. I think monthly, really, you've got to know what your numbers are on a month by month basis." "I think that accountability piece is really important, especially in those smaller organisations, when there's no one to have those hard conversations with." "People don't understand things like VAT, corporation tax and things like that, so what they will quite often do is they'll look at their bank account and use that as a judgment on how successful their business is." "I've had some bad luck with accountants, right? And a big part of that was over-reliance on automation by the accountant without something strong enough on my part, as well as theirs, to make sure that where we were relying on automation, that things were getting picked up, checked." Stewart Roberts, MBE, has worked in the Hair industry for most of his life. With 18 years of sobriety under his belt, Haircuts4Homeless started by accident in November 2014, after Stewart was volunteering at a Salvation Army in Essex. "I had recently seen a guy on Facebook doing makeovers on homeless people on the street so thought I'll bring my scissors to the next session and give some haircuts." Little did he know it would change his life. Now they have 68 projects across the UK & Ireland, 600 volunteers and have given over 60,000 haircuts. "I soon realised that it was much more than a haircut that we were giving. It's about respect, connection, touch and communication." Stewart Roberts: Father, husband, entrepreneur, angel investor, author, guest lecturer, board member and volunteer. Stewart worked for Morgan Stanley in NYC; co-founded TIX CHINA, a Shanghai-based trading company; studied at Harvard and served as the OC President of Tech Coast Angels, the largest angel investment group in the country. He has guest lectured at both UCLA's Anderson School and USC's Marshall School of Business. For eight years he served as a CASA mentor. Today, he leads men through life's transitions with retreats, online courses and books. He is the author of VISIBILITY: PLAYING TO WIN THE GAME OF LIFE. A few years ago, he found his dream life was falling apart. He was failing on multiple fronts — as a HUSBAND, a FATHER, with his HEALTH. He was angry. His wife was filing for divorce and he felt helpless. He had problems in his business that could not be solved. Do you know anyone like this? Can you relate? There was nowhere to go. No one had the answers for businessmen and fathers. What did he do? He stopped everything. He quit work. He studied, took classes, read countless books on everything from Self-development, Health, Exercise Marriage, Parenting and spent thousands on courses to get answers to his questions. It took a lot of time and several years to turn his life around. - His marriage saved! - His health restored! - His anger was gone! - His energy was back! After he had been through it, he wanted to store it away in his mind, not talk about it, never making the same mistakes again. Dad Up! Click here!! My phone lit up with everyone saying, "Are you okay, are you okay," at five o'clock to then eight o'clock at night, "My God, I've just seen you on The X Factor adverts." I had to turn it off. I couldn't cope with it for about 24 hours.Stewart Roberts has had quite a journey in his life. A journey which has led him to become a founder of a community-based charity where hairdressers donate their support to the homeless. They have 600 volunteers, near to 68 projects on the go and have delivered around 40k pockets of joy in the form of haircuts for homeless souls since they started back in 2014. Their sponsors include the National Lottery Community Fund, affiliates include the British Beauty Council and L'Oreal and this year the charity won the Marie Claire UK Hair Awards 2021 Special Jury Prize which is a special recognition for helping others. Their Global ambassador is none other than the Game of Thrones star Lena Headey. We chat about what triggered Stewart to create his charity, losing his hairdressing business and the grief with it, the challenges of the pandemic on the charity and also the homeless, the serendipity of life as his business went into insolvency and what happened the same day to open a huge door, how he has attracted his sponsors, affiliates and ambassadors, why he contemplated 10 ways of killing himself at a dark stage in his life, why the Gideon bible is by his bedside and much more. HOMELESS PEOPLE HAVE MANY CHALLENGES TO FACE, ONE OF THEM OFTEN BEING A LOW SELF-ESTEEM. Haircuts4Homeless is a registered charity set up by veteran hairdresser Stewart Roberts. Inspired by the actions of hairdressers in various parts of the world cutting hair for the homeless, Stewart set out not only to do this his self but to build a whole community of skilled hairdresser volunteers who give their time free of charge to give haircuts for homeless people.Homeless people have many challenges to face, one of them often being a low self-esteem. A haircut can have a great effect on someone, giving them a real boost. It's often way down on a homeless persons priorities with what lack of money so the service proves to be very popular. One of people's basic rights is for them to feel good about themselves and this service can give that to people.Hairdressers have a known empathy and are great communicators. The industry is known for its generosity and willingness to help people therefore there are many that would willingly give some of their time and expertise. We started the project in Havering and, with the right amount of support, plan to roll it out across the UK & beyond. There is something very personal about cutting someone's hair that can be both enjoyable and therapeutic which is something that many homeless people rarely get.It may be "just a haircut", but it's the kindness shown that makes a homeless person know that people really care.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/civewodeja)
Stewart Roberts is a one man marvel. He set up Haircuts 4 Homeless, where he and a number of volunteers in numerous locations across the UK, cut homeless peoples hair. Offering them a chance to feel good about themselves, but also offering them compassion, an ear to listen and no judgement! we talk about this amazing charity and how Stewart came to set up this initiative. We also talk about Stewarts own battles with depression and his recovery. This is a really open and honest conversation between Nick and Stewart, where we really get into mental health, recovery and how to move forward. Expect loads of penny drop moments and some real wisdom you can carry with you. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

My guest on this episode is a born and raised Essex geyser, who began hairdressing in 1978 after falling for a girl who worked in a local salon. Luckily he fell in love with hairdressing too and he went on to open his own salon 10 years later. Stewart came to visit me in London where we talked about him being 13 years sober from alcohol, setting up The Sober Living Action Group in 2013, a programme with holistic treatments for alcoholics, and also in Nov 2014 creating the award winning Haircuts for Homeless. He also discusses the struggles homeless people go through and about his new haircutting training scheme for the homeless to join and help give them a career and hopefully a new start in life. To donate or check out Haircuts for Homelesss go to www.haircuts4homless.com with the word four like the actual number 4, you can also check out the Sober Living Action Group on facebook.

This week's special edition of Fintech Insider Insights was recorded live at Xerocon 2017 from London's Excel Centre. David hosts a panel on Frictionless Finance, discussing how technology is lowering barriers to entry and we hear how the panelists are tackling friction in finance. David talks to Caroline about Fluidly's intelligent cashflow technology and her experience at Xerocon, plus we hear from Shachar about the problem that Curve is trying to solve, connecting all cards and accounts in one app, using one card. Next up, Colin talks to us about iwoca, an online lender specialising in small businesses, and about his background in Strategy. Plus, how a partnership with Xero has fueled iwoca's growth and why Xerocon is so important to them. Stewart Roberts explains how iZettle is changing the way small businesses take payments, as well as all the things they can do after that point. Back on the panel, how does a big bank keep up with its customers' needs and why is it all about connecting people? David also asks about the big pain points for small businesses and some of the solutions, including the importance of saving time, how automation can provide that all-important peace of mind and why it's all about discovery and accessibility. And there's more - the challenges and opportunities created by open banking; how data will be used in the future; Brexit (you knew it would crop up...);the responsibility of running a marketplace; and where will SME banking be in ten years' time?
