Today's Two Words: FUNNY BUSINESS In this episode, I'm joined by Janet McLeod, the Fairy Godmother of Melbourne Comedy. Janet runs Local Laughs, which at 20 years, is the longest running comedy room in Australia with a sole operator/programmer...and one of my fave spots to perform. We discuss comedy in all its glory — what is comedy, really? What makes a great comedian? How do you filter out the a**holes to make comedy rooms safe workplaces? Janet shares all her magical insights and wisdom, much to our audience's delight. A special note: this episode was recorded a week before beautiful and kind Cal Wilson suddenly passed away. Cal is one of my comedy heroines and she introduced me to Janet after we met through The Moth storytelling community in Melbourne. One of my favourite Cal memories is performing with her at Local Laughs in 2018 and she gave me the biggest hug after I got off the stage. So special! In this episode, Janet and I speak of Cal's kindness. I'm grateful to have met and worked with her and she'll always be one of my faves. ABOUT JANET MCLEOD With over 25 years' experience producing and programming live shows, Janet's curatorial skills are frequently called upon by organisations and arts festivals across Australia and in the UK including Edinburgh Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Glen Eira Storytelling Festival, Soho Theatre, Melbourne Fringe, and Fringe World in Perth. She has managed over 60 separate projects in her professional career, including long-standing weekly comedy events Planet Comedy and Local Laughs. (Image credit: Alan Moyle — Local Laugh's 20th birthday celebration, June 2023) An active champion of women in comedy, Janet was one of the originators of Upfront Comedy - now a hallmark event at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival - and has since produced all-women comedy show like Miss (you) and Frockin' Hilarious in Melbourne. Andy Goodone has been a comedian here in Melbourne, and Sydney, since 1981. 40 years!! Amazing hey? It was fascinating hearing about how comedy, as we know it, was just starting come onto the Australian entertainment scene in the early 80s. He tells us how it all started, what it was like here in Melbourne back then, how the first Melbourne Comedy Festival started, who won the first Moosehead award, what the comedians and audiences were like back then and what it's like being back on the open mic. comedy circuit after all these years. This episode really is a treasure. Andy opens up and tells us the stories behind how comedy started here, who was involved, and what has evolved to bring us to where we are now, in 2021. He's like the Grand Daddy of Melbourne comedy, the man with The Voice, the comedian who has us crying with laughter, he's Andy Goodone. This episode was cut off prematurely, so there is no proper ending of the episode. But we certainly recorded a very decent podcast with heaps Melbourne comedy history, and now we can listen and learn about how it all happened, whenever we like. He is a wealth of comedy knowledge, having worked in Australian comedy for so long. If you haven't seen Andy perform, I can't recommend him highly enough! He's hilarious and definitely has his own unique style. I play you out with a track called Cigarette by the Emotional People. Emotional People are the band that won the Moosehead Award at the MCIF back in 1998, and Andy directed and acted in their show, Phenomenomenon! Thank you for listening to Uncomfortable Truths. Janet A McLeod is a Melbourne-based performer/producer/broadcaster/writer with over 25 years of experience is the field of live comedy. As a performer, Janet hosts countless trivia nights and events both live and online, and is co-host of cult-favourite movie comedy commentary show Cinema Fiasco (in which Janet and her double-act partner Geoff Wallis show B grade movies in cinemas and provide a running commentary as the movie plays - yes, this is as much fun as it sounds). As a producer, Janet's adaptability and attention to detail - coupled with a genuine love and understanding of comedy - has made her long-running comedy room Local Laughs (17 years) a favourite for established artists as well as an incubator for promising emerging talent. Fun fact: during lockdown, Local Laughs became the first regularly operating comedy room in Australia to do weekly shows live via Zoom. Janet's active championing of - and collaboration with - a large numbers of comedy practitioners has seen her dubbed "The Fairy Godmother of Melbourne Comedy". In this episode: We talk about comedy history in Melbourne, when you feel comfortable about calling yourself a producer, clarifying your role as a producer, working out what part of the role you will do, and more importantly, what you won’t do, and discuss the links between producers and lava lamps! Yes, you read that correctly.

Paco can't quite get into Bob Dylan although our guest has tried to turn him on to the canon. Comedian Tony Camin joins the Sup Doc gang to provide a Dylan fan's insight into the obtuse Netflix concoction Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese (2019).Netflix describes it as “part concert film, part fever dream” and an “alchemic mix of fact and fantasy.”“Rolling Thunder Revue” is an engaging but disorganized and long-winded account of the time in 1975 that Bob Dylan convened a vagabond caravan of musicians, poets, reporters, photographers, money men, and hangers-on to tour the United States in the lead-up to the country’s Bicentennial celebration. The tour was a bust financially and in terms of cultural impact. Nevertheless, the Rolling Thunder Revue rejuvenated Dylan as a musician, in the manner of Elvis Presley’s 1968 “comeback” special. And it generated enormous amounts of tour footage, some of which is reproduced here, within a highly conceptual framework, by Scorsese. Our guest Tony Camin has appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Real Time with Bill Maher, and lots of others that have been cancelled. He’s has performed at The Just For Laughs festival in Montreal as well as The HBO US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, as well as the Melbourne Comedy festival in Australia. Tony has written for programs on NBC, VH1, and Comedy Central. In addition to being co-creator/ performer of “The Marijuana-Logues”, he can also be seen as a correspondent for “The Media Project”, on IFC, and was a recent contestant on NBC’s Last Comic Standing.Follow Tony:Twitter: @tonycaminFollow Sup Doc on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.
