Exciting times for Port Adelaide Football Club fans! Young draftee, Tom Anastasopoulos, has played some great footy in the SANFL in his first season at the Magpies and shown he has a bright future. Living with fellow draftee and good mate Lachie Charleson, Tom is embracing the challenges and joys of his new journey. Their friendship is a testament to the strong team culture at Port Adelaide. We can't wait to see these two young guns grow and thrive together! Tom told some hilarious stories about Lachie, shared the joy of living a childhood dream by getting drafted by Port Adelaide at the 2023 National Draft, his footy journey and influences throughout his career so far. Thanks so much to Southern Slugs Football Club for their continued support and to the team at PodBooth for putting this great video together.
Just remember, you asked for it! Moments of uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity are the uncomfortable leadership moments, and what you signed up for.The discomfort of not knowing. These are the times when leadership is most needed, your leadership, and in fact, if not for these conditions, you may well be doing someone else's job for them. Learning how to be comfortable with the discomfort of the role. “You can't stop the waves, but you can learn how to surf', said Jon Kabat Zinn, perhaps my favourite ever leadership quote. Our first guest ‘In the Arena' is Michael Voss, three-time AFL Premiership Captain of the Brisbane Lions and the Senior Coach of the historic Carlton Football Club. As a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame, Michael Voss would feature near the top of most football pundits' ‘greatest ever' lists, elevated not only for his sublime talent but also for his capacity to exert his will on the game and the teams he led. A career in coaching beckoned, and so it was, stepping up as Senior Coach of his beloved Brisbane Lions, forgoing the assistant coaching ‘apprenticeship' that has become the practice over the past few decades. But it did not play to script, and five years later, he was dismissed from the role. But this setback was merely a lesson and one of the many for a leader who is determined to be the best he can be for the people he gets to influence on their own journeys. It was seven years as an Assistant Coach at the Port Adelaide Football Club before he would get the opportunity to once again be ‘In the Arena' as the Senior Coach of Carlton, now into his third season, taking them deep into the 2023 final series (after a rocky period of six straight losses) in just his second season, their first finals appearance in a decade. One thing that separates the most impressive and influential leaders I have worked with is their willingness to embrace reflective learning and generously share their lessons and insights. This makes Michael Voss a great football coach, leader, and super podcast guest, hence our decision to lead off the first episode of ‘In the Arena'. The conversation also benefits from our personal relationship. A couple of years ago, Michael sought support in his role, and I have been his coach, focusing on leadership, the mechanics and dynamics of a layered and complex role, all playing out in the public eye as coach of one of the biggest clubs in the country. I must say, he is highly coachable, as you will experience listening to this podcast. There are many layers to this conversation. Yes, the insights are invaluable, but you will also sense the principles he leads, be it his generosity, humility, and a sense of purpose, while acknowledging his role's impact on the players he coaches and the club he leads. He genuinely embraces his old coach Leigh Matthews' mantra of: - Know your role- Accept your role- Play your role He will have you reaching for a pen and paper, jotting down the ideas and thoughts of a leader and teacher who has ‘done the work', and challenging you to do likewise.Episode #001 is a leadership masterclass, and we are so grateful to have the opportunity to share it with you. You're going to love this. Play On! Cameron Schwab

There's been lots of study on how to give feedback effectively but very little on how people receive it. That's a pretty important piece of that puzzle. In the realm of Australian Rules Football, few names shine as brightly as Shaun Burgoyne. A four-time premiership star, Burgoyne has etched his name into AFL history with a career marked by skill, resilience, and an unyielding commitment to success. Shaun Burgoyne, affectionately known as "Silk" for his smooth style of play he hailed from a footballing family and played a pivotal role in the Port Adelaide Football Club first ever AFL Premiership in 2004 alongside his brother Peter. Over his nine seasons with Port Adelaide, Shaun solidified his reputation as a dependable and versatile player. His ability to impact the game both in midfield and across half-back earned him accolades, and he played a pivotal role in Port Adelaide's 2004 Premiership triumph. In 2009, he made a high-profile move to the Hawthorn Football Club, a decision that would prove instrumental in his pursuit of further premiership glory. Host one of Craig's talks at your club or schoolSign-up to receive Craig's free newsletterThe traditional definition of a coach is someone who gives instruction to help an athlete or direct team strategy. The problem with this definition, however, is that it can result in a one-way flow of information - from coach to athlete - which doesn't necessarily line up with how young people learn. On the show today, I chat with coach developer and researcher, Rob Mason (@rob_mason12). Rob holds a PhD in Education and a Masters of Teaching from the University of Melbourne. He currently works as the Coach Development Manager at Port Adelaide Football Club in Australia. Rob frequently presents to organisations on game day communication, feedback and coaching science and writes about his work here. In this conversation, Rob shares how a coach can deliver feedback in ways that best support the learning and all-round development of their athletes. We also discuss:The huge influence Rob's dad has had on his coaching;Rob's love for books;Being a career procrastinator; The importance of earning credibility from your athletes and how to do it;Using an action research approach to improve your coaching; Why what you say in your feedback is not always the same as what is heard; andMore.I love Rob's reflective nature and clarity of thought, as well as how willing he is to really assess the impact of his work. Please enjoy the show. Kia ora!Connect with Craig:Instagram: instagram.com/drcraigharrison/Facebook: facebook.com/drcraigharrisonTwitter: twitter.com/drcraigharrison

Shaun's career in the AFL speaks for itself, playing 407 games of professional football, the 5th most ever in the history of the AFL and the 1st indigenous player to have ever played over 400 games. He is a x4 premierships player, winning 3 with Hawthorn Football Club and 1 with Port Adelaide Football Club.Since retiring at the end of 2021, he has transitioned into media where he now finds himself on Channel 7 and triple M commentating the AFL matches, as well as working in multiple positions at Port Adelaide such as Indigenous Liaison officer, Football Service officer, and Community Ambassador. On today's show, whilst we speak a lot about football in this podcast, this chat is more about the inner mindset of a football player and the inner workings of an elite football club. Shaun was recruited in 2009 to the Hawthorn Football Club, and the club under the leadership of Alistair Clarkson, built a dynasty, winning 4 premierships over 8 years. We talked about the high-performing culture the club created, the meaning of living and breathing the values within a football club context, and the absolute obsession with giving and receiving feedback. We also deep-dived into Shaun's own mindset, and how he grew from a pretty easy-going teenager who had just been drafted to becoming elite with his habits and behaviors, his application, his mental state, and how he managed through the ups and downs of injury, how he kept himself in the best possible position they play week in and week out, and finally how he managed to be a husband and father of 4 whilst playing at the highest level for 20+ years. Shaun also shared with us :His journey and the importance of his family in his career - Wife and 4 kidsHis learnings as a player and the influence of his coaches in his lifeHow was the process of Changing club and the importance of the values and culture of the clubImportance of Leadership, Diversity, and InclusionReconciliation PathCulture change in the club - Women can now playHow he learned to trust othersBooks mentioned in this episode:Silk Football, Family, Respect By: Shaun Burgoyne, Martin Blake Where to find Shaun Burgoyne:LinkedInInstagramTwitterJoin the conversation on Synergy IQ on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram (@synergyiq), and please support other leaders by liking, subscribing, and sharing this podcast. I was very lucky to interview the Hartlett brothers Adam and Hamish just before this year's SANFL season kicked off, we had some technical issues which delayed posting up the video but thankfully we got it sorted in the end. We spoke about the ups and downs of Hamish's 193 game AFL career at Port Adelaide Football Club and what it's like to be back where it all started at the West Adelaide Football Club again. We also had a bit of banter between the brothers, discussed Adam's footy career as well and found out some of the funny team mates that the boys have played with throughout their footy careers. Thanks so much to the Hartlett boys for their time, for Jeff Richardson for helping with editing the video, Matt Pill for filming and our partner Anytime Fitness Glenelg for their continued support.
With the final INXS track in Song Week upon us, we culminate with Never Tear Us Apart, a track that has grown from a beautiful ballad to truly iconic status. Ensuring a fourth consecutive top 10 from album KICK, Never Tear Us Apart is an alternative sounding Fats Domino-inspired waltz transformed into a beautiful, lush orchestral masterpiece. Soaring the charts globally, this ballad never wastes a note, lyric, or moment, and still, 35 years later produces spine tingles and heart flutters. Whether it's Michael's evocative lyrics and vocals or the sublime instrumentation by the band, this song truly comes to life in the city of Prague with Richard Lowenstein's award-winning video. Covered by numerous artists since its release including Joe Cocker, Tom Jones, Natalie Imbruglia, and The Teskey Brothers, N.T.U.A. has transcended its origins with it now being the match day theme song for Port Adelaide Football Club, Michael's funeral song, and the titular name of the band's award-winning miniseries in 2014. So sit back, grab a Kleenex and open your heart to this beautiful song.
