Part One: Jailhouse Jannies In this episode, we're diving into the spirit — and  mischief — of Christmas in Newfoundland. First, I've got an old story from Trinity, where one group of mummers wound up in jail… but that was far from the worst thing to happen to them. I call the story Jannies in the Jailhouse. I've come across this tale a number of times in my travels but I based my retelling on a version shared in the Daily News' ‘Trinity Notes' section on January 3, 1955. Part Two: Tyler Humber of Kitchinparti I'm excited to welcome Tyler Humber of Kitchinparti, the ECMA-nominated family trio known for their high-energy performances, harmonies, and dedication to keeping Newfoundland's musical traditions alive. Made up of Tyler (vocals, guitar), his sister Terri Lynn Hickey (vocals, tin whistle), and brother-in-law Justin Hickey (vocals, bass), Kitchinparti embodies the spirit of a true Newfoundland kitchen party—which is to say they bring people atogether with music, laughter, and stories. Since forming about four years ago, Kitchinparti has been adding their own original songs to Newfoundland's musical catalog while reimagining traditional favorites. They're currently working on their third album with producer Matt Dines, set to release in the summer of 2025. This holiday season, the band is celebrating the tradition of mummering with their new single, Plank'er Down. Written by Charlie Payne and made famous by Uncle Harry's Bar Band, the ‘Plank'er Down' captures the fun energy of mummers as they visit homes late into the night. I'm thrilled to chat with Tyler about Plank'er Down, the band's roots, and classic Newfoundland hors d'ouvers. Part Three: Martha's Dance With The Mummer Finally a brand new story; a ghostly tale from Bonavista Bay about a woman's last dance with a mummer. It's a story of love and loss, and maybe even the fulfillment of a Christmas promise from long ago… the whole town wants to get a glimpse behind the mummer's mask, instead the get a glimpse beyond the veil. The Village Voice once described him as "a bizarre cross between Hendrix and La Monte Young." He's performed at most of the avant garde's hallowed halls including The Kitchen, Bang On A Can, Central Park Summerstage, The Knitting Factory, Tonic, the Deep Listening Institute, CBGBʼs as well as De Ijsbreker in Amsterdam and many festivals throughout Europe.  Other projects include working with the sonification of the atmospheric phenomena known as the Schumann Resonances and human brainwaves and other esoteric projects such as The Western Enisphere, a drone and micro-pulse acoustic-electric ensemble. Travis also breaks down the Chiefs electric comeback against the Bengals and we try and decide once and for all just how Isiah Pacheco runs (50:07).  Finally, we get to everything else that happened in Week 17 including Mike Tomlin's new record (01:11:30), coin toss controversy (01:27:32), the confusing ending to the Lions/Cowboys game (01:15:24), and why we'd all rather get punched in the face than have a drink thrown on us (01:24:49).  We will be back Friday with a preview of the final regular season Chiefs and Eagles games, we'll also answer some more not dumb questions, and we have potentially a major change to the bracket challenge that we need your help figuring out.  Make sure you're subscribed to the New Heights YouTube Channel and wherever you get your podcasts so you don't miss out and follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok for all the best moments from the show. . . . XTC Legendary Guitarist Talks Remix Of Classic Album, "The Big Express"#xtc #guitarist #classicalbum #remixalbum #thebigexpress “‘The Big Express' is the closest we ever came to recording a ‘concept' album. It's full of Swindon and deep seams of life there, that run through myself, Colin, and Dave, (Terry too of course). It's populated by members of our families, our hopes and dreams. The things we wished for, or feared, a stew of memories.” – Andy Partridge – excerpted from the book “Popartery”, 2023XTC's seventh album, “The Big Express” was virtually ignored on release, much as its immediate predecessor “Mummer” had been. If “Mummer” was XTC's quiet album, this was its polar opposite: bright, brash, noisy – even cluttered on occasion if the song demanded it – as it became a concept album of sorts, a partly autobiographical reflection on growing up in an industrial town, Swindon, with its history of engineering and railway accomplishments.Perhaps in keeping with that tradition of technical innovation, the album also made extensive use of (at the time) new technology with Linn-Drum programming (alongside drummer Peter Phipps), E-mu Emulator and other synths claiming space among the more traditional guitars, bass and drums mix under-pinning the vocals. This technology was juxtaposed with technology of a slightly earlier pop/rock era as phasing, backwards tapes and the inclusion of a mellotron hinted at a psychedelic influence that would move more center-stage with the band's next project – “The Dukes of Stratosphear”.With XTC no longer touring, the sound radically different to any previous XTC album, in a musical climate where the upper end of the charts reflected national radio, producing the most mainstream result for years: Lionel Richie, Sade, Spandau Ballet, Howard Jones, Tina Turner, Queen – Frank Sinatra's final solo studio album… the space for a metallic, post-punk concept album about growing up amidst the ghosts of Swindon's industrial heritage proved non-existent.Purchase: https://burningshed.com/xtc_the-big-express_cd_blu-rayFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dave.gregory.520/ Thanks for tuning in, please be sure to click that subscribe button and give this a thumbs up!!Email: thevibesbroadcast@gmail.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/listen_to_the_vibes_/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thevibesbroadcastnetworkLinktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeuTVRv2/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheVibesBrdcstTruth: https://truthsocial.com/@KoyoteFor all our social media and other links, go to: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastPlease subscribe, like, and share!

James Inman is a son, a brother, a boyfriend, a formerish standup comedian, a computer whiz, and a collector of both vintage speakers and sundry Elvis Costello albums. He's a hoot, and a trip, and a man that's wise beyond his years (Note: Shouts out to the local public library.), and he did -- for the record -- say (once we'd wrapped) that it was cool to leave everything in.As usual I was part of the conversation when we taped and a different part of it during edits, and normally I'm ready to move on once I've played both roles. This time, though, I think maybe I'm still processing everything that I learned. In fact, I'm not sure of all that I didn't know before we had our conversation. And trust me -- it was a good one.Among many other topics, we touched on a few of James's favorite records, and they were these:Imperial Bedroom, Elvis Costello & The Attractions (1982)The Clash's London Calling (1979)Mummer, XTC (1983)Quite the collection.I hadn't seen James in the better part of 10 years before we sat down together, so I'm pleased that he agreed to come by for the hang. James is a poster child for the just-be-yourself campaign, and I hope -- be it one day in the cards -- that I can at some point watch him turn out a live set in the comedy scene.Anyway, check out his book and his two albums and his movie over at jamesinman.com.Thank you, James, for being an amazing part of Episode #53.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio. They are samples from a tune called, "Inversion Layer" by Robert Walter's 20th Congress. They put out a record called Get Thy Bearings (c/o Royal Potato Family) in 2013, and that track is from this album. I've used it before. On Episode #1. In some locales, the period between Christmas and the New Year is known as the Wild Nights, where mischief reigns in the darkest days of the northern hemisphere. We're digging into this theme for our last show of 2022, in a chat with photographer and producer of this very podcast, Jill Waterman, who has been documenting New Year's Eve traditions and exploits around the globe for the past 38 years. We first spoke with Jill about this project in the two-part show Legacy and Commitment in January 2022. Since she's now a full-fledged member of the podcast team, we thought we'd investigate some of her more memorable experiences a bit further. Jill is still shooting this series primarily with film, so our conversation ranges from the whys and wherefores of making that choice, to how the growth of the Internet became an essential research tool in the lead up to the Millennium and beyond. Arya and Gendry are not taken to Riverrun, rather they are escorted south to meet with Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr. En route Arya tries to escape, but Harwin - a Stark bannerman, no less - chases her and captures her. Oh perfidy! Mackelly and Simon discuss the origin story of the Brotherhood Without Banners.Chapter Review:Hot Pie has elected to stay and become head baker at the Inn of the Kneeling Man. Arya Stark and Gendry are headed to Riverrun. Only, they're headed in the wrong direction. Arya is sure. She's accompanied by Harwin, amongst others, so she hears how things have been for him since he left King's Landing. Not all rainbows and unicorns. The Mountain lay in wait for them at the Mummer's Ford and decimated two thirds of Dondarrion's force. Beric himself was gravely wounded but was nursed back to health by Thoros of Myr. The latter is a priest of R'Hellor, and seems to use the power for slightly nicer things than his compadre Melisandre does. The Brotherhood Without Banners, as they term themselves, has decided to stay in the field, not to fight for either side, but to protect the smallfolk from the armies that abuse them. They do this in the name of King Robert. Arya tries to escape, but Harwin's father was the master of horse, so he catches her. His loyalty is to Beric, Thoros, and his new brothers. The Lightning Lord will decide what to do with Arya.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Arya Stark - Younger daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark. Gendry - Friend of Arya. Former armorer's apprentice. Bastard son of King Robert Baratheon.Hot Pie - Friend of Arya. Former recruit to the Night's Watch.Tom Sevenstreams - Singer in the Brotherhood Without Banners.Lem Lemoncloak - Soldier in the Brotherhood Without Banners.Anguy - Archer in the Brotherhood Without Banners.Sharna - Proprietor of the Inn of the Kneeling Man.Harwin: Member of the Stark household guard. In this month's episode of What Do You Call That Noise? The XTC Podcast, we reassess XTC's most frequently neglected album in the company of some of its biggest fans. Mummer is the eleventh in a series of XTC classics to be issued on 200g vinyl. Joining in the celebrations are sound engineer Crawford Blair, who was briefly a member of the XTC cover band X-sTatiC, Sean McGhee, who is a singer, songwriter and Alison Moyet's musical director and Tim Bowness, who as well as being a musician, is co-host of The Album Years podcast with Steven Wilson and co-founder of Burning Shed, the online record shop.  All this, plus new music from Chris Badley and Dave Marson aka Foolish Men. Order the re-release of Mummer on 200g vinyl Order Butterfly Mind by Tim Bowness Listen to Round and Around by Foolish Men What Do You Call That Noise?
