RADIO WARS! Kyle and Kevin lead the show with the lopsided fall ratings between WIP and 97.5. What is the future of Beasley? Can WIP keep the momentum after Angelo retires? How much did the Phillies and Eagles play into it? We're then joined by Dr. Vince Basile, the Mummer who saved the Eagles fan in the 200 level of the Linc. He details the entire situation and we see if we can get him some playoff tix for the Birds run. We finish talking about a good Sixers win, their dominance at home, Carson Wentz's might retire, and Kyle being nominated for the Inquirer's Super Fan contest. In some locales, the period between Christmas and the New Year is known as the Wild Nights, where mischief reigns in the darkest days of the northern hemisphere. We're digging into this theme for our last show of 2022, in a chat with photographer and producer of this very podcast, Jill Waterman, who has been documenting New Year's Eve traditions and exploits around the globe for the past 38 years. We first spoke with Jill about this project in the two-part show Legacy and Commitment in January 2022. Since she's now a full-fledged member of the podcast team, we thought we'd investigate some of her more memorable experiences a bit further. Jill is still shooting this series primarily with film, so our conversation ranges from the whys and wherefores of making that choice, to how the growth of the Internet became an essential research tool in the lead up to the Millennium and beyond. We also shed light on the elusive Austrian Perchten and Bulgarian Kukeri, and discuss parading Philadelphia Mummers, Bahamian Junkanoo figures, and Cape Town, South Africa's legendary Minstrel Parade. To learn about the most rewarding aspect of Jill's project and find out where she'll be ringing in New Year's Eve 2023, pull up a seat, pop some bubbly and listen in! Guest: Jill Waterman Photos © Jill Waterman Episode Timeline 2:35: The beginnings of the New Year's Eve Project 4:28: Evolution of the project and approach over time 5:34: Shooting black and white film instead of monochrome digital captures 8:12: Opportunities of the Millennium 9:04: The growth of the Internet as a research tool and discovering locations for New Year's Eve rituals 10:00: Documenting “Perchtenlaufs” in Austria during the Wild Nights 10:59: Common themes in different cultures: Mummer's Parade in Philadelphia; Junkanoo in Nassau, Bahamas; and the Minstrel Parade in Cape Town, South Africa 14:48: The spread of oral New Year's traditions and rituals: Burning Effigies and New Year's Widows in Quito, Ecuador 16:32: Bulgarian Kukeri and New Year's parade to scare away evil spirits in Razlog 17:28: Advance planning before arrival and proceeding with boots on the ground 18:46: The value of spontaneity and capturing action in the moment 19:58: Working through anxiety, emotional spikes, and physical challenges 21:09: Assessing coverage and reviewing images after the fact 22:12: Underwhelming celebrations, and New Year's Eve during COVID lockdown 25:50: Episode break 26:35: Jill's analog camera kit: Nikon F3 HP, a 35-70 mm f/2.8 zoom and 24 mm f/2.8 prime lenses 27:45: Black and white films used—Ilford HP5, Delta 400, FP4, Delta 100—and diluted development to minimize contrast 29:23: The most rewarding aspect of the New Year's Eve Project 30:41: Working through language differences and being open to communication 32:15: Experiencing the Pied Piper syndrome 32:45: Big crowds and safety issues on New Year's Eve 35:36: This year's destination, recent New York Foundation for the Arts award, and project links Guest Bio: Born and raised in Massachusetts, Jill Waterman has been based in New York since 1985. Her personal work is centered in long-term photo projects, such as the ongoing New Year's Eve Project and other aspects of her focus on night photography. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally and widely featured in press and media. Highlights include a 1997 arts documentary for Deutsche Welle TV in Berlin, Germany; a 2003 Today Show interview with Katie Couric; and a 2015 documentary for the web TV show Culture Connect. Waterman's first book, the technical volume Night and Low Light Photography, was released by Amphoto books in August 2008. It's season finale time and the storm has really picked up now so pull up a seat at the Mummer's Farce's painted table and help us guess what the different props mean. In this episode, we see Rhaenyra's side of things as a companion piece to Alicent's last episode, and how through a series of unhappy accidents, the spark of war is lit. Daemon serenades a gnarly dragon underground, Rhaenyra is crowned high above, and for most of this episode Rhaenys stays someplace in between. Plus, a friendly reminder to keep your pets leashed at all times while flying around Storm's End.

Arya and Gendry are not taken to Riverrun, rather they are escorted south to meet with Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr. En route Arya tries to escape, but Harwin - a Stark bannerman, no less - chases her and captures her. Oh perfidy! Mackelly and Simon discuss the origin story of the Brotherhood Without Banners.Chapter Review:Hot Pie has elected to stay and become head baker at the Inn of the Kneeling Man. Arya Stark and Gendry are headed to Riverrun. Only, they're headed in the wrong direction. Arya is sure. She's accompanied by Harwin, amongst others, so she hears how things have been for him since he left King's Landing. Not all rainbows and unicorns. The Mountain lay in wait for them at the Mummer's Ford and decimated two thirds of Dondarrion's force. Beric himself was gravely wounded but was nursed back to health by Thoros of Myr. The latter is a priest of R'Hellor, and seems to use the power for slightly nicer things than his compadre Melisandre does. The Brotherhood Without Banners, as they term themselves, has decided to stay in the field, not to fight for either side, but to protect the smallfolk from the armies that abuse them. They do this in the name of King Robert. Arya tries to escape, but Harwin's father was the master of horse, so he catches her. His loyalty is to Beric, Thoros, and his new brothers. The Lightning Lord will decide what to do with Arya.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Arya Stark - Younger daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark. Gendry - Friend of Arya. Former armorer's apprentice. Bastard son of King Robert Baratheon.Hot Pie - Friend of Arya. Former recruit to the Night's Watch.Tom Sevenstreams - Singer in the Brotherhood Without Banners.Lem Lemoncloak - Soldier in the Brotherhood Without Banners.Anguy - Archer in the Brotherhood Without Banners.Sharna - Proprietor of the Inn of the Kneeling Man.Harwin: Member of the Stark household guard. At least the new Aemond casting seems fun, even if he seems to be the portrait Criston Cole is keeping in his attic. Also have you heard about this dagger? Hoo boy, what a dagger it is!

Every Album Ever with Mike Mansour & Alex Volz

This week we're discussing every album by XTC. Led by Andy Partridge, few bands have the creative journey that XTC did. They started out as blistering post-punk, grew into an accessible 80s pop act, went on to pioneer modern alternative, only to end up tossing in a bunch of orchestras, wasting all their money in the process. By the end of their journey, the band was whittled down to two members who hated each other. This is a good one, so strap in.Closing track: “I Am the Audience” from Go 2 (1978)Spotify playlist on XTChttps://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincPatreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @motherpuncherMike's Picks:White Music (1978) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteWasp Star: Apple Venus Volume 2 (2000) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Drums and Wires (1979) — Best AlbumWhite Music (1978) — Personal FavoriteThe Big Express (1984) — Worst AlbumWasp Star: Apple Venus Volume 2 (2000) — Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…White Music (1978)Go 2 (1978)Drums and Wires (1979)Black Sea (1980)English Settlement (1982)Mummer (1983)The Big Express (1984)Skylarking (1986)Oranges & Lemons (1989)Nonsuch (1992)Apple Venus Volume 1 (1999)Wasp Star: Apple Venus Volume 2 (2000)

You'll get the pleasure, and quickly, of understanding why my Podcast begins and ends with a legendary Philly voice. John McBride has called a countless array of Sports, Music and Local Events (as well as Radio and Voiceover) throughout the Philadelphia Region. In addition to John's exceptional voice, it's also John's technical expertise (you have to listen to JMcB's classic stories of maximizing opportunity with preparation.) Take nothing for granted and always be prepared to seize the moment. I've had the privilege of having John McBride "call me home" multiple times from premiere Philadelphia running events (Broad Street Run and Philadelphia Marathon just to name two signature Philly events.) Before this Podcast interview, John taught me about preparedness by guiding through my first Public Address Announcer job covering High School Basketball. I'm smart enough to know that (and thanks to John McBride) that you never leave home without "Pen and Paper" and no... having your phone to type may not be good enough (listen to the Mummer's 2022 story, as these practices NEVER go out of style.) Speaking of in- style, John McBride's classic voice, humor, and sense of community make this conversation a blast for me. Today, I get to call home... my friend... John McBride. Here are other ways to find John McBride- as John is definitely worth a read too! https://www.publicaddressannouncer.org/being-prepared-to-be-prepared/ Bird2562@aol.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-mcbridevo/ https://www.instagram.com/jmcbride_225/

Kate is a dress maker in the north of England who always did what was decided for her: serving those who come her way, marrying a man who is considered suitable, and living all her life "over the hills" she wants so desperately to cross. Until she decides her life are not enough for her. The novels she reads give her new ideas that change the course of her life forever. George Moore was an Irish realistic novelist. A Mummer's Wife was his second novel. At the time, the circulating libraries were those who published the mainstream novels. They were charged with publishing moral works. They rejected A Mummer's Wife. This sparked interest among the public and it sold 14 editions by the end of the first year. This was considered so dangerous that the libraries took Moore's publisher to court over what was called The Literary Act which was meant to decide which work was considered moral. LOVE IS LOVE: PHILADELPHIA CELEBRATES PHILLY GAY PRIDE MONTH WITH 45 EVENTS, FUNDRAISERS, DANCE PARTIES, DRAG SHOWS, ART EXHIBITS AND MORE Please find 45 top ways to celebrate gay pride in 30 days of June in Philadelphia. We have broken the list down below by MONTH-LONG activities vs. DATE SPECIFIC activities. A) MONTH-LONG ACTIVITIES - 1) LGBTQ Hall of Flags and Philly Gay Pride Flag Exhibit Sofitel Philadelphia at Rittenhouse Square 120 S. 17th S., Philadelphia 215-569-8300 https://www.sofitel-philadelphia.com Sofitel Philadelphia invites the community to celebrate Philadelphia's Pride rainbow flag on the outside of the building in June. An oversize rainbow flag, with Philly's addition of the brown and black stripes to honor diversity in the community, greets visitors as they enter to the left of the front doors. Inside look for the lobby to be renamed Philadelphia’s LGBTQ Hall of Flags. Look for Philadelphia’s locally designed and newsmaking rainbow flag to also have a center spot in the lobby, showcasing the diversity of our local community. The Philadelphia rainbow flag will be joined by host of LGBTQ flags flying high inside the lobby to celebrate the different facets of the local gay community, including Lesbian Pride Flag, Gender Fluid Pride Flag, Binary Pride Flag, Pan Sexual Pride Flag, Transgender Pride Flag and the Bisexual Pride Flag. 2) Philly Gay Pride Month: Cocktails for a Cause By FCM Hospitality AT EIGHT LOCATIONS! Philadelphia largest and most stunning outdoor and indoor restaurants and concepts will celebrate June as Philly Gay Pride Month with a month-long celebration! FCM Hospitality and owner Avram Hornik announce that Lola’s Garden, Juno, Parks on Tap (two locations), Morgan’s Pier, Harper’s Garden, Craft Hall, The Garden at Cherry Street Pier and Rosy’s Taco Bar will all work in unison to help raise funds for LGBTQ Philadelphia-based charities through Philly Gay Pride Month Cocktails for a Cause. All eight cocktails to match the eight colors in the Philly-specific and inclusive rainbow flag will raise money for four different charities. One dollar from all eight cocktails during the 30 days of June will go to support William Way LGBT Community Center, Attic Youth Center, Philly Asian Queer and Galaei. This stance in social solidarity hopes to shine light to the various communities that the celebration of national Pride month helps represent, being mindful to include all groups that help make Philadelphia the amazing, diverse community it is. FCM Hospitality will compile donations from all venues and equally divide them between the organizations which were selected for their dedicated work and ongoing efforts to focus on intersectional populations. Their annual festival was  set  to kick-off on March 22, 2020, but was postponed to the fall due to the global pandemic. Philadelphia  Pride was subsequently postponed, and out of that, PrideFLIX was born. Rooted in its 26-year history,  qFLIX proudly continues its tradition of sharing the stories of LGBTQ+ people. The virtual film festival will launch on Monday, June 1 2020, and promises a stellar line up of LGBTQ+ documentaries, feature films, short films, and web series. One of the highlights will be a screening is that of gay writer/director Mike Mosallam’s rom-com, “Breaking Fast.” The film stars out actor Haaz Sleiman as  Mo,  a heartbroken gay Muslim who meets — and eats with — Kal (Michael Cassidy) during Ramadan. Because the Holy Month forbids impure thoughts and activities, Mo is forced to practice self-control. Mosallam’s clever conceit allows Mo and Kal to fall in love as their relationship develops over numerous romantic meals and dates. Sleiman and Mosallam, who were to be honored for their work at the fest in March, have been invited to participate in a post-screening talkback via zoom on June 29 along with Seth Hauer, the film’s producer. Several of the films will include talkbacks with filmmakers and/or talent. In addition, PrideFLIX is planning a weekly moderated discussion of specific titles on Sunday nights in June to help foster a sense of community during this period of social distancing. Ticket prices will range from $7-$10 per viewing, with $1 of each viewing going towards local LGBTQ+ non-profits. There will also be an option to purchase a festival badge to view all the films. The pain of suffering through the pandemic, the shifts in our relationship with technology, the immense amount of loss, the calls to action, and our strength to carry on as a community are all themes explored by artists of this show. During this long period of uncertainty, there were times we found comfort in the care of others, through loved ones, and through members of our communities. We’ve seen the artistic landscape change completely, with in-person shows adjusting, shifting to online formats, and many artists spending more time at home, embracing new mediums. There is no singular way to describe this past year’s traumatic experience just as there is no singular way to depict or process such events. It is together as a community that we can begin to rebuild and maintain a renewed sense of hope. This exhibition features works by Allis Chang, Charlie Welch, Chloe Luisa Piñero, Christine Jung, Cheyanne Kemp, Coco Spencer, Daisy Diamond, Emilia Onthank, Erin Moore, Frankie Modesto, Harry Hoy, JaySquids, Kara Mshinda, Lawrence Ade Scales, Logan JM, Lucia Garzón, M. Keeping with the tradition of highlighting the diverse groups that make up our fabulous community, this year we are proud to celebrate our Non-Binary and Gender Non-conforming community members! Last year’s message of inclusion still resonates loudly with our core belief that sports have a significant role in our lives.  Sports build confidence, create communities, promote healthier lives and much more! Lez Run founder, C.C. Tellez says “We believe it is essential for  LGBTQ+ athletes to be unapologetically visible in sports at every level.  Representation means everything, especially to historically  marginalized people.” There is still much progress to be made when it comes to the full inclusion of all LGBTQ+ athletes in the world of sports; which is why it’s essential that we show up and that our diversity be counted. We are grateful for the paths forged by the courageous athletes and allies who have shown up and worked to advance equality for LGBTQ+ athletes. There is still a lot of work to be done to ensure full inclusion of LGBTQ+ athletes in all sports. Philly Pride  Run invites you to come out — join the celebration and movement to advance equality! Be an Out and Proud Athlete at the 2021 Virtual Philly Pride 5K and Fun Run events!
