It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on the subpoena of Donald Trump, E. Jean Carroll's new charges against Trump, a vehicular strike on the White House, the slow acceptance of greedflation theory by economic elites, and Ron DeSantis' police, also tackling Kevin McCarthy and Joe Biden agreeing on their desire to potentially agree to negotiate an agreement on the debt ceiling negotiation. Sam and Emma dive a little deeper into the absurd coverage of the greed factor in inflation, the lingering desire to make it seem like a fringe factor, and how to push the Fed to actually tackle this issue. They then parse through Minnesota's incredible progress with a trifecta and a one-seat Senate majority, walking through the history of the DFL, the incredible pro-labor legislation they're passing, and the importance of actually using power when you have it (*cough* national Democrats *cough*). And in the Fun Half: MR has some technical troubles (totally unrelated to the gerontocratic control of the studio), they watch Newsmax talking heads demean Fox for following the same human rights laws that they – as residents of NYC – also must follow, and Ren from Oregon dives into the private debt issue in the US. Mike from Portland solves Sam's computer issues, William from Portland reflects on the legacy of Michael Brooks, and Greg from Beaumont dives into tacit collusion, before Brian from Germany parses through some crazy attacks on mutual aid activism in North Carolina. Mississippi schools crack down on any non-normative gender expression, and Tusli runs to the defense of killer Daniel Penny, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. First, Emma dives into updates on the US job growth, the White House's debt limit concessions, Clarence Thomas' corruption, the continuing banking crisis, Dianne Feinstein's absence, fascist legislation in Florida and Indiana, and Donald Trump's rape case, also diving into the recent revelations about the Federalist Society's backdoor funding of Ginni Thomas. Alex Pareene then joins as he and Emma dive into Clarence Thomas' endless stream of corruption allegations, whether anything will actually be done about it, and how liberal institutions affirm the Court's corruption. They also touch on the disappearance of Dianne Feinstein, the holdup it has created in the judicial confirmation process, and what (if anything) Democrats will do about it, before parsing through Biden's role in the matter, where his 2024 candidacy stands, and his likely matchup with Trump. After tackling the impotence of the “Republican in Blue clothing” tactic of Manchin and Sinema, they wrap up the interview with the devastating story of the killing of Jordan Neely, and the horrors of uplifting right-wing violence fantasies. And in the Fun Half: Emma parses through Steven Crowder's 2015 Op-Ed, “I'm a Guy and I'll Never Badmouth my WIfe,” Caleb from Canton discusses the absurdity of the billionaire genre of Nazi obsession, and Matt dives into the greatness of Chris James. Devon from Alberta asks Emma about the Oilers, the MR Crew parses through Lance from the Serfs' killer appearance on Tim Pool's show, and Michael Knowles and Matt Lech bond over their pro-Hooter stances, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Hump Day! Emma hosts Aris Komporozos-Athanasiou, associate professor of sociology at University College London (UCL), to discuss his recent book Speculative Communities: Living with Uncertainty in a Financialized World. Then, Emma is joined by economist Nathan Tankus, proprietor of the Notes on the Crises newsletter, to discuss recent developments at the Federal Reserve and Silicon Valley Bank. First, Emma runs through updates on an impending recession, Memphis reinstating Justin Pearson to the Tennessee Statehouse, the identity of the Louisville shooter, Dianne Feinstein's retirement, the drying of the Colorado River, and Alvin Bragg's response to the attacks on him from the right, before diving into the recent letter from Rashida Tlaib and other progressive congressional members calling for the release of Julian Assange. Aris Komporozos-Athanasiou then dives right into defining “speculative communities,” as a community defined and united by its uncertain future, resigned to collective contemplation and anxiety with no solid structural support, before stepping back to explore “speculation” as a deterministic economic concept – an individual taking an unwanted risk for future gains – versus looking at it from a community perspective, as an open-ended engagement with our uncertain futures. This brings Professor Komporozos-Athanasiou to the topic of “political speculation,” which he defines as the weaponization of instability to capitalize on the confusion and anxiety it creates, as seen in the rise of right-wing populism in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Wrapping up, he and Emma tackle the role of enclosure in cutting off other community outlets for anxiety and structures for stability. Nathan Tankus and Emma then walk through what's wrong with the Federal Reserve, from the absurdity of putting one agency in charge of the economy, to its obvious obsession with one side of its dual mandate. They conclude the interview by addressing the Fed's response to the recent Silicon Valley bank run, and why the legislative deregulation of banking encourages administrative inaction. And in the Fun Half: Hua from Raleigh dives into the role of gentrification in community displacement, Emma addresses yesterday's Twitter drama, and the failures of popularism (especially in an electoral sense). Mitch from Glendale discusses Marianne Williamson's candidacy, Emma and Bradley tackle the disappearance of Dianne Feinstein, watch Tucker Carlson quiver at the feet of his forgiving lord (Donald Trump), Elon Musk argues that he HAD to fire most of Twitter's staff in order to waste money losing advertisers, and Jordan Peterson's guest offers some of the most disgusting anti-trans arguments yet, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Walt Bogdanich and Michael Forsythe, investigative reporters with the New York Times, to discuss their recent book When McKinsey Comes to Town: The Hidden Influence of the World's Most Powerful Consulting Firm. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Democrats retaining the Senate (and potentially expanding on it with Georgia), the GOP winning what could be the slimmest House majority ever, and the University of California graduate workers strike, before diving into why Sen. Bill Cassidy's “We're not a Cult” shirt raises a lot of questions already answered by the shirt. Then, Walt Bogdanich and Michael Forsythe join as they dive right into their investigative reporting on the massive global management and consulting firm McKinsey & Company, advisors to Fortune 500s, Governments, Dictators, and those all the way down the global power structure with little to no public knowledge of their work. Then, they unpack the “values” of McKinsey, ranging from their primary concern of putting their client's interests above those of the firm, to the more obscure values of “act with integrity” and “an obligation to dissent,” and how their reporting seemingly undermined these elements. Next, Walt and Michael walk through the greater history of consulting work, with McKinsey's work with GM beginning in the 1950s and instigating the shift of capitalism towards ephemeral and hyper-financialized practices, bolstering the income of the C-Suite while workers became forced to rely on safety nets, all while the firm acted as a cover for any bad decisions or accountability coming back to hurt the upper echelon of the company. Wrapping up, they unpack the myriad conflicts of interest in McKinsey's work, including advising Big Pharma, every element of the insurance and medical industry, tobacco companies, and then also the FDA that supposedly regulates them, and explores how anti-trust and other regulation can begin to reign in these monopolists of power. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma cover the mass layoffs coming from two of the richest men on earth (Musk and Bezos), and the greater failures of the existence of Billionaires, Mike from Santa Barbara dives into the future of DACA and immigration, and Joe Rogan says that “everybody knows” that being trans is just a weird fetish – all while the conservative push for abusive transphobic policies likely led to their collapse last Tuesday. Matthew from Philly dives into contract law and the rights of ride-share drivers, and John from San Antonio reflects on the 2022 midterms, and how the remaining votes might get counted, plus, your calls and IMs! Sometimes you have to preach truth to yourself when the days are long and you feel inadequate. And oftentimes we need a friend or two to point out the truth. Jamie Ivey is on the podcast today to be that friend for us. She brings us into her personal struggles as a mom and reminds us that we aren't alone in the struggle. “It brings me so much comfort that God is not surprised by our diagnoses. He is not surprised by our families. He's not surprised by our struggles. He's not surprised by our insecurities, but he is a God who's willing and ready to be with us in the midst of those.” If you need a reminder that God made you to have your kids. He made your kids to be who they are with all their abilities and challenges. And he didn't just create us and stand away distanced as we struggle in life. This episode is for you.  We talk about Jamie's new children's book God Made You to Be You, but dive much deeper into what that message can mean to us as moms and how we can encourage our kids as they relate to others who are different than them.  Connect with Jamie:  Website:  jamieivey.com  Facebook: facebook.com/TheJamieIvey  Instagram:  @jamieivey Links Mentioned:   Book: God Made You to Be You More at jamieivey.com/kids  [Ep 191] A Safe Place to Share Messy Stories :: Jamie Ivey  Featured Sponsors:  Mathnasium — Whether you are looking to get your kids back on track or want to ensure they're staying ahead with their math studies, find a center near you at mathnasium.com and contact them for a free in center or online consultation.  StoryWorth — StoryWorth is a meaningful gift you and your family can treasure forever. A favorite gem for sure." From Greg in New Zealand: "I'm loving the new narrative/profile episodes and had noticed the evolving voice and style in GGP 223. You and your team are wonderful writers...David Haas' story reminded me of my good friend Mark Holtze. An editor in Toronto, Mark has digitised all of his grandfathers' They are brilliantly presented. Mark is very talented. I think they're worth sharing with your listeners. I don't know Mark's connection to specifically but it's an amazing one on his playlist." I couldn't agree more! Here's the description of the video: A number of 8mm film reels were purchased at a Flea Market in New York City for $10. They ended up being home movies taken in the late 40's and 50's. How they ended up at a Flea Market in Manhattan all those years later is one thing, but most importantly was getting the films reconnected with the family. ...60 years later....   Thank you to our sponsor: I've used for years and love it. You will too!   Organizing the videos you find online After listening to episode 223, Kate was inspired to head to YouTube in search of videos that illustrate her memories. She writes: “I've been trying to set up a collection of my memories on you tube. Do you have any thoughts on to put this together? Is it possible to add clips and not full videos?” My suggestions: YouTube: Organize with playlists You can use Playlists to group the videos you find by topic. You could create playlists for locations, timeframes, people and so on. Sign in with your free Google account which will give you access to your YouTube “channel.” When you find a video, under the title of the video click the plus sign that says “Add to”. Select a playlist from the playlists listed in the dropdown menu. These are playlists you have already created in your account. If it's a long list, use the search box to search for a playlist title. Or create a new Playlist by clicking “Create New Playlist” at the bottom of the menu. Unfortunately, YouTube doesn't give you a way to add your own notes. And you can't create clips of videos (at least not as of this writing), but I do know that when you share a video you can mark that it start at a point in the video that you select. Which brings me to my next suggestion… Pinterest: Organize Videos into boards on Pinterest If you would like to have even more control over organizing the videos that you find, and you want to be able to add your own notes and memories, consider using Pinterest. In your free Pinterest account you can create as many boards as you want. Create a board for each topic (much like with the Playlists I suggested previously) and save YouTube videos to them. And of course, you can save any other online content "memories" that you find along with them if you want. The beauty of pinning is that you can add your own notes and memories, plus you can set the video to begin at any point within the video that you want. Simply click “Share” under the video in YouTube, and click to check the box for “Start at.” Next, click on the player timeline that runs across the bottom of the video on the spot where you want the video to begin playing. Finally, click the Pinterest icon in the Share area to pin it to your Pinterest board of choice.   Profile America: TV Tech Thursday, December 13th. The important holiday business of viewing such classics as “It's A Wonderful Life” and “A Christmas Story” on home TVs owes much to a technological advance this month 80 years ago. In December 1938, Russian-American engineer Vladimir Zworykin was awarded two patents for cathode ray tubes. One was for the iconoscope to capture video images. The other was for the kinescope, which displayed television and computer monitor images for decades until the advent of flat panel screens. Whatever the ills of TV programming, obviously the American people consider it an appliance for a wonderful life. More than 98 percent of American households own at least one set, a percentage that has held steady for years and across all age groups.
