A practical discussion where two former therapists share what they learned professionally and experienced personally about the healing and restoration of our God-given glory
The Restore The Glory Podcast is an incredible resource for anyone who wants to delve deeper into their own healing and spiritual growth. With a focus on the intersection of psychology and spirituality, this podcast offers valuable insights into the human psyche and how it relates to our relationship with God and others. The hosts, Dr. Bob and Jake, bring a wealth of knowledge and experience as Catholic therapists, making them relatable and trustworthy sources of guidance.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is how it addresses the wounds and brokenness that we all carry within us. Through their insights, Dr. Bob and Jake help listeners understand the impact of their own actions on others and provide practical tools for healing these wounds. Their vulnerability in sharing personal stories adds a relatable element to their discussions, creating a safe space for listeners to explore their own deep-seated issues.
Another great aspect of this podcast is its emphasis on collaboration and building better relationships with others. By recognizing the importance of our spiritual connections, Dr. Bob and Jake offer valuable perspectives on how to improve our interactions with others and find true intimacy in our relationships. Their teachings go beyond surface-level advice on personal growth; instead, they dive deep into the core issues that hinder our ability to form genuine connections.
While there are no glaring weaknesses in this podcast, some listeners may find that it leans heavily towards a Catholic perspective. While the content can still be beneficial to individuals from all walks of faith or even those who do not identify with any religious beliefs, it may be more appealing or relatable to those within the Catholic tradition.
In conclusion, The Restore The Glory Podcast is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking healing, growth, or a deeper understanding of themselves. With its unique blend of psychology and spirituality, it offers practical wisdom that can be applied to various aspects of life. Dr. Bob and Jake's expertise as Catholic therapists shines through in every episode as they guide listeners towards greater self-awareness and a closer relationship with God. This podcast is truly a blessing and has the potential to spark transformative change in the lives of its listeners.
This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Teresa Pitt Green, co-founder of Spirit Fire, a ministry dedicated to “facilitating healing dialogue among those wounded by abuse in the Roman Catholic Church.” Teresa shares her own story of healing from abuse, the challenges she experienced, and what she learned along the way. She also shares practical advice to help priests approach conversations with survivors, common mistakes to avoid, and insights into the complexity of what it's like to heal from abuse. Ultimately, it is Jesus who heals, and He can use whatever we have to offer to bring about restoration in the Church and her members. If you are experiencing or have experienced abuse of any kind, we encourage you to reach out to Teresa or check out her resources on Spirit Fire's website. Key Points: Navigating conversations with survivors of abuse requires sensitivity and receptivity For many survivors of clergy abuse, there is little distinction between priests and abusers Healing from abuse is an ongoing journey, it isn't something someone can just “get over” If someone approaches you about abuse, be careful to listen and not judge their experiences Even if we make a mistake in our approach to a conversation, God can still work through that moment. He is the one who is ultimately doing the healing work The journey of healing is complex and nonlinear Resources: Spirit Fire's Website Connect with Restore the Glory: Instagram: @restoretheglorypodcast Twitter: @RestoreGloryPod Facebook: Restore the Glory Podcast Never miss out on an episode by hitting the subscribe button right now! This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Matt Rudolph, co-founder of Chrism which is a ministry for priests. Matt dives into the challenges faced by priests today including a need for community, support in embracing imperfections, and formation that emphasizes personal healing. They also share their visions for a more integrated approach to the priesthood that fosters true spiritual fatherhood. Matt ends the episode by sharing how Chrism supports priests in becoming happy, healthy, and holy in their vocations. Key Points: Many priests experience loneliness and isolation in their ministry Human formation is also relational, not just intellectual Priests need to be known and not just loved by their parishioners Formation needs to continue beyond seminary and into the priest's ministry at a parish A thriving priesthood requires happiness, health, and holiness Personal woundedness can impact how a priest is leading his parish Resources: Chrism Priest Ministries Website Wounds Assessment - send an email to Team@ChrismPriest.com (click here for more information) Freedom Series for priests with the JPII Healing Center Connect with Restore the Glory: Instagram: @restoretheglorypodcast Twitter: @RestoreGloryPod Facebook: Restore the Glory Podcast Never miss out on an episode by hitting the subscribe button right now! This week, Jake and Bob share ideas on how to foster a healthy parish community. They not only reflect on the challenges of developing true community within a parish but also ponder how healthy parish life revolves around our personal healing and freedom. Through the use of multiple personal examples, Jake and Bob also explore the importance of the Sacraments, the role of forgiveness, and how love and fear bonds affect our relationships with God and those around us. Key Points: Building community in small groups and then coming together for Mass on Sunday is one way to begin fostering community The Pastor of a parish has the important role of spiritual father and can foster community and connection by his example Many people may feel unsafe to build community in their parishes due to past wounds and judgements Fear and love bonds not only affect our relationships with others but also with God Fear bonds are formed from wounds and can lead to anxiety or avoidance in relationships Love bonds are built on trust and intimacy Sin and unresolved issues can affect the health of a parish community Judgement and Rigidity can hinder community growth Healing our own woundedness on an individual level contributes to a more vibrant community on the parish level Connect with Restore the Glory: Instagram: @restoretheglorypodcast Twitter: @RestoreGloryPod Facebook: Restore the Glory Podcast Never miss out on an episode by hitting the subscribe button right now! This week, Jake and Bob discuss intergenerational healing, taking into account recent pastoral advice from Bishops around the world. Intergenerational healing involves understanding how wounds and sins from previous generations can affect individuals in the present. Jake and Bob not only reflect on the Bishops' letters, which express concern regarding the practice of intergenerational healing, but also share personal experiences of miraculous healings that occurred after addressing generational issues in prayer. Key Points: The Church teaches that while individuals are not guilty for the sins of their ancestors, they can still be affected by the consequences of those sins Intergenerational healing involves understanding how the wounds and sins from previous generations can affect individuals in the present A genogram is a tool for mapping family history and identifying patterns of sin and dysfunction Baptism wipes away the guilt of sin but the effects of sin may still remain Healing your wounds and forgiving those who have hurt you can have a profound impact on the lives of your loved ones Resources: Spanish Letter (this letter is in Spanish and you will need to translate it) Please note: In this episode, Jake and Bob mention other letters in addition to the Spanish letter linked above. This week, Jake and Bob welcome back Dr. Christin McIntyre, a Thomistic psychiatrist, to discuss the concept of personality disorders. They begin by defining what a personality disorder is and explore how modern culture and social norms can influence and twist this definition. Then, they discuss the interplay between inherited traits, early life experiences, and individual choices in shaping one's personality. Through the analogy of a sailboat, Dr. Christin also shares how the intellect, will, and emotions are all interconnected and why navigating the waters of healing not only involves the formation of the intellect but also the conforming of our will to God's. Key Points: A personality disorder is identified by a pervasive pattern of experience and behavior that is abnormal with respect to any two of the following: thinking, mood, personal relations, impulse control (from Dr. Cristina Lynch) Individuals with personality disorders have much hope for change Inner healing is an important aspect of addressing personality disorders Inherited traits, early life experiences, and individual choices all contribute to the development of a personality disorder Healing involves the formation of the intellect and conforming of your will to God Healing is a continuous process, not a one-time event Virtue is essential for true healing and involves habitual good choices Resources: Thomistic Institute of Psychology Connect with Restore the Glory: Instagram: @restoretheglorypodcast Twitter: @RestoreGloryPod Facebook: Restore the Glory Podcast Never miss out on an episode by hitting the subscribe button right now! This week, Jake and Bob return to an important topic: the healing power of forgiveness. Both Jake and Bob have encountered forgiveness and mercy in their healing journeys and share personal stories about receiving forgiveness and forgiving others. They also discuss why forgiving and forgetting is not possible, how to know if you've truly forgiven someone, and how our memories are transformed through the process of forgiveness. Key Points: Forgiveness is essential for healing and spiritual growth Trust is often lost in areas where we have been wounded Fear often surrounds these areas where we have lost trust Forgiveness can transform pain into compassion Unforgiveness hardens our hearts and reduces our ability to receive the love God desires to pour into us Memories can be purified through the process of forgiveness Sin not only wounds those we hurt but also ourselves It is important to also forgive ourselves Resources: Identity Course by Jake Khym (use this link to get 10% off) Trusting Our Father's Provision by Dr. Bob Schuchts Healing Prayers Booklet Connect with Restore the Glory: Instagram: @restoretheglorypodcast Twitter: @RestoreGloryPod Facebook: Restore the Glory Podcast Never miss out on an episode by hitting the subscribe button right now! This week, Jake and Bob continue their conversation and focus on the primary mechanisms of our human nature when it comes to change. We are a composite of body, soul, and spirit, but many times we isolate change and healing to only one part of our nature. While this can lead to some change, when integrated on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level we can experience greater progress. Jake and Bob discuss incremental vs transformational change, how the Sacraments pour out grace into our lives, and share stories of experiencing change in their lives. Key Points: If you want to take care of yourself, you first have to understand yourself We are a composite of body, soul, and spirit and healing largely occurs when we integrate all three There are two types of change: incremental and transformational Incremental change often precedes transformational change Being in relationship with others is a healing experience The Sacraments pour out grace into our lives that aids us in making a change Connect with Restore the Glory: Instagram: @restoretheglorypodcast Twitter: @RestoreGloryPod Facebook: Restore the Glory Podcast Never miss out on an episode by hitting the subscribe button right now! This week, Jake and Bob explore the complex process of personal change, what change requires, and why change can seem out of reach. In today's culture of near instant gratification, it's easy to think change should and will come about quickly and without much effort. While God can and does work many miracles, the reality is, change takes time, effort, and a lot of grace. Jake and Bob have experienced this in their lives, understand the struggle, and share their GIVE framework as a guide to help you navigate the beautiful and yet painful waters of change. Key Points: Change requires an understanding of the human experience Relationships and community play an important role in personal transformation An open disposition of the heart is key to allowing grace to change us Judgements and beliefs can “block” the grace we receive in the Sacraments from transforming our lives Healing requires personal responsibility, it should not be approached superstitiously God does work miracles and healing can come quickly. But most often healing occurs over time and with consistent engagement GIVE: Grace, Intention, Vision, Equipment Change is often accompanied by suffering and sacrifice Resources: The Huberman Lab Podcast with Jordan Peterson: How to Best Guide Your Life Decisions and Path Diary of a CEO with Jordan Peterson: How to Become the Person You've Always Wanted to Be The Huberman Lab: How to Focus to Change Your Brain Connect with Restore the Glory: Instagram: @restoretheglorypodcast Twitter: @RestoreGloryPod Facebook: Restore the Glory Podcast Never miss out on an episode by hitting the subscribe button right now! Throughout his journey of faith, Fr. Mathias shares stories of physical and emotional healing, explains what charisms are, and why a relationship with God is the most important part of each of our lives. This week, Jake and Bob are joined by psychiatrist Dr. Christin McIntyre to discuss spiritual warfare and mental health. They discuss the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas on human psychology and why learning about how our minds were created to work helps us spiritually and emotionally. Dr. Christin also discusses the importance of hope in prayer, what constrains our ability to love, and the role of repentance in mental health. Key Points: Prayer is transformed when we focus on hope instead of worry When we pray with hopes, we pray for the deep desires of our hearts. Real deep desire is suffering and can feel like Purgatory on earth Fear and anger constrain the heart's ability to love Spiritual warfare principles can provide valuable insights into mental health Both physical surroundings and spiritual beings (whether angelic or demonic) affect mental health Change involves a conscious act of the will and it can take time for our emotions to “feel” the results of these acts Understanding the nature of how our minds were created as human beings helps us navigate emotional challenges and can lead to healing We must cooperate with God's grace to be transformed Resources: Mount Angel Abbey YouTube Channel Dr. Christin's Lectures on Thomistic Psychology (Part 1) (Part 2) Introduction to the Science of Mental Health by Fr. This week, Jake and Bob continue their conversation on redemptive suffering. They reflect on the Song of the Suffering Servant from Isaiah 53 and how Jesus redeems suffering itself. Jake and Bob also discuss how Jesus experienced all seven deadly wounds, challenged each identity lie, and how this in turn helps us challenge our own identity lies so that we too can love through sorrow. This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Fr. Mark-Mary Ames, CFR to discuss the anatomy of freedom. Fr. Mark-Mary talks about the three pillars of freedom, the components of being loved, and how these concepts have helped bring about healing within his ministry work. They also discuss the importance of naming our needs, surrendering them to God, and why this act of surrender helps us love and be loved more authentically. Key Points: The three pillars of authentic freedom are being seen and known, loved, and safe. The components of being loved include being heard, understood, chosen, and receiving personal treatment. Being loved authentically also involves being celebrated, sacrificially served, offered forgiveness, and pursued. Having clear rules, consistency, and sufficient resources contribute to our sense of safety. We should surrender our needs to the Father so that we can then be more open and able to receive healing from those around us. This week, Jake and Bob go back to the basics of healing. They reflect on the idea that it is not what happens to us that harms our souls, but rather our response. Jake and Bob also discuss the problem of evil done to another, the challenges that come with accepting the reality of what happened, and the role of pain in the healing process. Key Points: There is a difference between blame and responsibility. It is important to hold abusers accountable while also recognizing our personal role in the healing process Our souls are harmed in our response to a trauma but that does not mean we are responsible for the trauma itself Grace and divine assistance are necessary for acknowledging the reality of what happened and experiencing healing Healing is the process of being restored to our original God-given glory. It involves encountering God as the source of our healing and developing a right relationship with Him Healing is not just the removal of pain, but the freedom to will the good and the capacity to live in accordance with our true nature Connect with Restore the Glory: Instagram: @restoretheglorypodcast Twitter: @RestoreGloryPod Facebook: Restore the Glory Podcast Never miss out on an episode by hitting the subscribe button right now! This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Fr. John Burns and Sr. Miriam James Heidland to talk about their ministry called Friends of the Bridegroom. Their ministry seeks to renew the Church through the healing, renewal, and expansion of women's religious life in America. They also discuss the nuptial meaning of every vocation, the unique beauty women bring to the Church, and how in every state of life, we are all called to live for another. Key Points: Priests and religious play a vital and unique role in the health and healing of the Church A Church without religious sisters is like a family without a mother No matter our state of life, we are not meant to be living for ourselves. Our hearts are made to be lived for another Friends of the Bridegroom seeks to bring God's glory forth by awakening a movement in the Church for the restoration of the Bride. When the Bride radiates, everyone understands their place within it. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are three ways we can offer a penitential sacrifice for the renewal of the Church. This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Lance and Nicole Rodriguez to discuss spiritual parenting and the profound impact it has had on their lives. Lance and Nichole share their story of loss and restoration from learning they could not have biological children, to experiencing spiritual parenting, and from there, recognizing how God created an opportunity within this sorrow to cultivate a spiritual family. They touch on the challenges that arise in spiritual parenting, the importance of receiving love before offering it to others, but most of all, the fruits that have grown out of this place of surrender. Key Points: Receiving love and healing is essential before offering it to others as a spiritual parent. Loss and suffering can lead to unexpected blessings. Spiritual parenting can be messy and challenging, but is also transformational and fulfilling. Building a spiritual family requires openness, vulnerability, and a willingness to enter into the pain and joy of others. It also means creating a safe and loving space for young people to grow and discover their identity in Christ. Spiritual parenting is a ministry that evolves and requires ongoing prayer, discernment, and reliance on God's grace. This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Duane and Carrie Daunt to discuss what living out our identity of father or mother can look like as a biological parent. Duane and Carrie share the challenges and joys of parenting a large family and the role sacrifice plays in creating a strong and loving home. They also talk about how their own woundedness has impacted their parenting journey, the role of community, and what to do when spouses disagree. Key Points: Duane's sacrifice and willingness to put the needs of his family above his own is an essential aspect of creating a loving home. Community and mentorship play a crucial role in raising children and passing on the faith. Parenting a large family comes with unique challenges but also brings great joy and fulfillment. Our own woundedness and past experiences can impact our parenting journeys. It is important to seek healing and restoration in those areas. We are human and will make mistakes. Seeking to reconcile with your children afterwards is important for healing and repair. This week, Jake and Bob are once again joined by Heather Khym to conclude their four part series on the four identities of a human. In this episode, they focus on the identity of father/mother, discuss maturation versus healing, and explore how unresolved wounds in the other three identities surface in the identity of mother/father. They also discuss the unique yet complementary qualities of a good mother or father and how they represent different traits of God's character. Whether you have biological or spiritual children, remember the key to experiencing the fullness of our role as mother/father is becoming little and allowing God to love and heal us. Key Points: Mothers and fathers have unique giftings that can bless their children in different ways. Mothers and fathers cannot be replaced by each other and represent different aspects of God's character. Corresponding words and deeds are important in embodying the roles of mother and father. Becoming little and allowing God to love and heal us is key to experiencing the fullness of our roles as mothers and fathers. This week, Jake and Bob are once again joined by Heather Khym to continue with part three of their four part series on the four identities of a human. In this episode, they focus on the identity of bride/bridegroom and delve into the interconnectedness of each identity and why healing is essential to living them out fully. They discuss self-giving vs. self-seeking love, the role of bride/bridegroom in every vocation, and how learning to love others well is an important aspect of our healing journeys. Key Points: The four identities of a person (son/daughter, brother/sister, bride/bridegroom, mother/father) are interconnected and require healing and integration to be lived out fully. The healing process involves both receiving love and learning to love well through practice and maturation. They end the episode by sharing personal stories of healing and restoration within their identity as a beloved son/daughter. Key Points: Identity is bestowed by God and is a gift to be received. A solid foundation in sonship and daughtership is essential for all other identities to flourish. Trust and receptivity are key elements of a secure identity. Wounds and brokenness can disrupt and distort our understanding of our identity. Healing and restoration are necessary to fully embrace our true identity as beloved children of God. Healing comes through receiving love and being rooted in God's love. This week, Jake and Bob discuss the current state of therapy and its increasing popularity in society. They explore the factors contributing to the rise of interest in therapy, highlight the importance of philosophy and theology in therapy training, and reflect on the importance of objective truth in the healing process. Key Points: Therapy has become increasingly popular in society, with more people seeking it out and discussing it openly. The breakdown of trust in various institutions, including the church, has contributed to the rise in therapy as a means of finding support and guidance. A solid foundation in philosophy, anthropology, and theology is essential in therapy training to provide a proper understanding of the human person and their needs. Subjective experiences without objective truth and care can be dangerous, and therapy should aim to integrate both subjective and objective realities. Resilience and the ability to repair are part of human nature and therefore are important aspects of therapy and personal growth. The sacraments provide structure and guidance in relationships and can contribute to healing and growth. Therapy should be situated within the context of faith and community, and not isolated from them. Discernment is crucial when considering a career in therapy, and motivations should be rooted in a genuine call rather than popularity or personal dysfunction. Healthy Christian communities have the potential to provide healing and support, and may reduce the need for therapy. Jesus should be the centerpiece of the healing journey. This week, Jake and Bob discuss their journeys away from being therapists and the reasons behind their decisions. They reflect on their experiences, share how they outgrew their roles as therapists, and how they found other outlets to use their charisms and gifts. Jake and Bob also share the burdens they felt before and after making the change and how surrendering their work to the Holy Spirit has helped bear more fruit than ever before. Key Points: Therapy can be a demanding profession that requires selflessness and a high level of holiness. Outgrowing the role of a therapist can be a natural part of personal growth and development. It could be a difficult but necessary step in answering God's call to a larger audience. Supernatural opposition can occur when bringing the Kingdom of God into the world. The Holy Spirit is the primary therapist and therapists should surrender to His guidance. This week, Jake and Bob discuss their recent ministry experiences at Franciscan University, Assisi, and various JPII Healing Center events. They explore the transformative power of healing ministry, why they prefer ministering to groups instead of individuals, and the significance of holy sites. Jake and Bob also share insights into why we need so much healing in today's culture. Key Points: Team ministry is powerful and allows for mutual submission and a greater impact. Holy sites have an accumulation of grace and can facilitate powerful encounters with God. Blessing spaces is important to invoke God's presence and protect against spiritual contamination. Blessing places and spaces is critical for inviting the presence of God and experiencing His grace. The desecration of authority and the degradation of holy spaces contribute to the loss of worship, healing, and the culture's current state. Therapists and pastors have distinct roles, and it is important to recognize the limitations of therapy and the need for spiritual authority. Prayer has a powerful impact and can bring about healing and transformation in the lives of others. Resources: Fr. This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Bishop Andrew Miller, the founder of HeartSync Ministries and a priest in the Orthodox Evangelical Episcopal Church to conclude their series on Parts Work. Bishop Andrew discusses the four core parts of HeartSync, the importance of placing God in the center of our hearts, and his process for helping others heal from brokenheartedness. He also discusses the ultimate goal of healing as bringing the whole heart into a loving relationship with God and how giving thanks to God can help bring us into deeper relationship and healing. For more information about HeartSync or Bishop Andrew, visit his website here. Key Points: Heart Sync is a therapeutic approach that focuses on healing brokenheartedness and integrating the core components of the heart. The four core components of the heart are function, guardian, emotion, and true self. Many people have parts of their heart that are not in relationship with God, and healing involves bringing these parts into communion with Him. Healing also involves making relational connections with God through memories and experiences as well as expressing thanksgiving to deepen the bond with God. It is important to recognize union with God as the ultimate goal of inner healing and deliverance. This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Gerry Crete, a marriage and family counselor to discuss his work on internal family systems, or parts work. Parts work is a therapeutic approach that involves exploring and understanding the different “parts” of our personality and how they can influence the decisions we make in life. Jake, Bob, and Gerry explore the transformative applications of parts work in therapy, distinguish the differences between desires and wounds, and discuss the role of love and compassion in the healing journey. For more information check out Gerry's book Litanies of the Heart. Key Points: Parts work, or internal family systems, can lead to remarkable breakthroughs in therapy by helping individuals connect with and understand their different parts. Harmony and unity within oneself can be achieved through the integration of different parts, allowing for a more balanced and authentic experience of self. Understanding the distinction between desires and parts can help individuals navigate conflicting motivations and make choices that align with their true selves. Practical applications of parts work include using analogies and visualization techniques to help individuals relate to and understand their parts. This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Joey Pontarelli, the founder and president of the ministry “Restored”. After finding a lack of help after his parents' divorce, Joey decided to begin ministry with “Restored” to offer practical guidance and support for teens and young adults from broken families. Jake, Bob, and Joey discuss the wounds that come from divorce, their personal experiences, and practical advice on how to respond to this woundedness. Key Points If there isn't any transformation in the wounds, then the sins we fall into, as a remedy, make sense. They don't work, but they make sense. We often don't want to face these wounds, so we try to outrun them. But we can't outrun our wounds. We're made for more than that. The Lord understands why you struggle with each particular sin. It doesn't surprise or scandalize Him. And He loves you where you are. Divorce is a wound of broken love. So the medicine can only work when you reach the wound. Love is what heals. Relationship with God is the primary healing element and agent. Give God your attention, quality time, and trust Him. Consume great content that involves trauma and healing. Seek out coaching - a therapist, spiritual director, or mentor. Have a good community and deep relationships. For a healthy marriage - spend time with a couple who has a healthy marriage. The temptation in marriage is to harden your heart and to close yourself off. But instead, we are called to tenderness and vulnerability.
