Chances are you started with 5e, the latest version of D&D. It's a fine game. You probably watched YouTube videos from Matt Colville or the Dungeon Dudes and learned more about the game you love. But now you're going through your first edition change. You may be looking to try something new. You may have heard of the OSR, or the Old School Renaissance, and wondered what it is, and how to get into it. This video is here to help you out. First thing you'll notice is that its long. I'm writing this before I record it, but I estimate it's going to be at least three hours. You may be asking “OMG! How can you expect us to watch that long?” First, you don't need to watch. Unless you want to see all the great old school B&W art that is. I won't be showing anything. Just talking, like a podcast. Everything I talk about I will have a link to, so you don't need to worry about remembering anything or taking notes. There are hundreds of links. So just sit back and enjoy. Second, I'll break it up into chapters, so you can digest it one chunk at a time, in the shower, in the car ride to and from work, wherever. Take your time. Dive in. The water's fine, and the OSR is a damn friendly place, despite what you may have heard. Plus, if Joe Rogan, Lex Fridman, and Chris Williamson can do long form shows, why can't someone in the D&D community? Seems there may be a need for something like this. The average D&D player is pretty damn smart, and if we can play a game we love for four hours, I figure we can listen to an old dude talk about the game we love for a couple hours. And I'm anything but boring.
Saul read an article about a couple of RPGs that had elimnated the Iconic Mechanic of Rolling to Hit. Saul mentioned the idea to Jolene. Jolene had a lot of questions about the whole idea and how it would work. Jolene's questions were why, how and would it be fun? One of the beauties of TTRPGs is the ability to not just watch or read an amazing story, but to experience it… to create it. The mystery, the action, the climactic battle between good and evil; D&D gives us the ability to create our favorite stories.One of the most important aspects of that, as the DM, is creating a level of mystery to the story that the players get the chance to uncover as they delve deeper into the adventure. Whether you have an epic story to tell or just hope your new RPG campaign survives week-to-week, mastering long-form storytelling is an essential part of being a Dungeon Master or game master in any game system. And it's not easy. As the person running the show, you experience the story in a way that's completely different than the players. It may be a big picture in your head with tendrils in everything the party does, but for them it's a series of immersive, detailed episodes that may or may not feel like they're building a story. If you want your players to remember why they did it as much as what they did, you need to learn how to plant those story hooks deep and keep the party on them.
