SummaryIn this engaging conversation, Danielle Strickland and James Scholl discuss with Jared Brock the themes of evil, the nature of Satan, and the insights from his book 'A Devil Named Lucifer'. They explore the misconceptions surrounding the devil, the importance of human agency, and the dynamics of spiritual warfare. The discussion also touches on the relevance of biblical teachings in understanding modern issues of morality and choice. In this conversation, the speakers explore the complex themes of freedom, autonomy, and the influence of the devil in contemporary society. They discuss the paradox of freedom as seen through the lens of Jesus' sacrifice, the misconceptions surrounding demonic influence, and the need for discernment in understanding mental illness versus spiritual oppression. The conversation also delves into the economic injustices that reflect satanic principles, the false gods of modern society, and the importance of recognizing God's sovereignty over evil. Ultimately, they emphasize the Christian mission of liberation and the necessity of right-sizing both God and the devil in our understanding of faith and life.TakeawaysThe devil is not an equal opponent to God.Satan's role is often misunderstood in modern Christianity.Human agency plays a crucial role in resisting evil. The concept of possession is more about individuals holding onto demons.Footholds and strongholds can be identified in our lives.Freedom is about choosing the virtuous, not autonomy. The devil's influence is often through lies and deception.Understanding the historical context of evil can reshape our views.Revelation reflects cycles of rebellion and salvation throughout history. The portrayal of Satan in popular culture is often inaccurate. Freedom is often misunderstood in the context of autonomy.Demonic influence is prevalent in popular culture but often misrepresented.Exorcism is a fundamental aspect of Jesus' ministry.Discernment is crucial in distinguishing between mental illness and demonic influence.Economic systems can reflect satanic principles of greed and injustice.Modern society has diversified its false gods. The devil serves a purpose in God's plan for growth and character development.Deliverance is a universal need for all individuals.Right-sizing God is as important as right-sizing the devil.Liberation is a core mission of the Christian faith.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Powers and Principalities03:09 Jared Brock's Journey and Background06:04 Exploring the Book: A Devil Named Lucifer08:56 Understanding the Nature of Evil11:46 The Misconceptions of Satan14:47 The Devil's Influence and Human Agency18:02 Footholds and Strongholds in Life21:06 Possession and the Nature of Demons23:55 Revelation and the Cycle of History26:58 Freedom vs. Autonomy27:56 The Paradox of Freedom and Autonomy29:15 Understanding the Devil's Influence Today30:13 The Role of Exorcism in Christianity32:39 Discernment Between Mental Illness and Demonic Influence34:55 The Economic and Social Implications of Evil36:28 The False Gods of Modern Society39:16 The Satanic Nature of Economic Systems41:34 Using Adversity for Growth43:55 Right-Sizing God and the Devil48:45 Liberation as a Christian MissionLinks: https://www.jaredbrock.com Get full access to Right Side Up: Danielle Strickland at daniellestrickland.substack.com/subscribe

There's a reason the term industrial-grade is used to express the highest levels of reliability and durability for products. After all, if a material, technology or tool can handle the rigors and demands of manufacturing, chances are it can meet the needs of any other application. We've been through these facts before, but they're worth repeating. IBM has cited manufacturing as the number one target for cyberattacks. The FBI is expecting a 400 percent increase in phishing attacks. The average ransomware attack demand has nearly tripled in the last two years. It's fair to say that these attacks will continue to get more complex and occur even more frequently. So, the strategies and software successfully implemented by manufacturing could serve as a model for countless other industries, institutions and individuals to emulate. One of the companies looking to enhance all these vitally essential cybersecurity protocols for the most important sector of our global economy is Rockwell Automation. And joining us today from Rockwell is Quade Nettles, Cybersecurity Product Manager at Rockwell Automation. For more information on the work Rockwell does, you can go to rockwellautomation.com.To catch up on past episodes, you can go to Manufacturing.net, IEN.com or MBTmag.com. Welcome to Passionate Life Church! Pastor Andrew concludes our series "Foothold". This week we look at the hidden footholds the enemy tries to establish in our lives. Join us as we seek the truth of God's word and allow the Spirit to renew our strength. Welcome Home! ----------------------------------------------------- Ephesians 4:26-28 NIV Topos: a place, region, seat; an opportunity. Four hidden footholds that open doors to the enemy. 1. Anger We can have anger and not sin. Unresolved anger and frustration that we sit in that is the problem. Stop making emotional decisions and saying things while you are angry. James 1:19-20 NLT 2. Participating in occultic activities. Deuteronomy 18:9-12 NLT 3. Entertainment Horror movies, pornography, movies that normalize witchcraft, horrific violence and just plain evil movies. Psalm 101:3 NLT Pornography takes our strength and vision. 4. Yoga and Eastern Meditation Hindu American Foundation Today, yoga is largely misunderstood to be and is practiced primarily as asana, or physical posture. And while practicing asana for improved health is perfectly acceptable, it is not the goal or purpose of yoga. “But using it [yoga] for physical practice is no good, of no use – just a lot of sweating, pushing, and heavy breathing for nothing. The spiritual aspect, which is beyond the physical is the purpose of yoga. When the nervous system is purified, when your mind rests in the atman [the Self], then you can experience the true greatness of yoga.” – Jois Eastern Meditation vs Biblical meditation Eastern meditation empties the mind. Biblical meditation fills the mind and spirit with God's Word. Eastern meditation focuses on self not on Jesus. Eastern meditation is only escapism. We don't need to escape our troubles; by faith, we walk through them, counting it all joy, “knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.” ------------------------------------------------------ Thanks for listening! Spiritual warfare is something we all experience – and it happens more often than we think. The battle can involve the world, the flesh, and even the devil himself (see Ephesians 2:1-3). But the struggle doesn't always happen out in the mysterious spiritual realm, somewhere far away and hard to see. In fact, when it comes to battling with the world, spiritual warfare is more ordinary than you might have realized. What Is “The World”? When we talk about “the world” in the context of warfare, we're not talking about the earth or even the people who inhabit it. The world, aka “the world system,” is an organized system in opposition and rebellion against God. Ephesians 2 warns about “the course of this world.” Think of the world system as a current that carries you away from God's will. From the time Adam and Eve first sinned, the world has been working against God's purposes for humanity. Satan himself is behind the world system, as Paul points out: 2 Corinthians 4:4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don't believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don't understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God. Most people are oblivious to the spiritual side of this world and the dangers thereof. If you want to win at spiritual warfare, you need to be aware of the dangerous pull of the world in all of its varied forms. Footholds and Strongholds The world establishes a foothold by putting ideas in your head that go against God's Word. Over time, the more you buy into it, it becomes a stronghold – a place from which the enemy can set up a defensive position. Paul warns us to guard against this: Colossians 2:8 (NLT) Don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. Worldly thinking dominates secular institutions and even infiltrates the church. Here are a few examples of bad ideas that are introduced to us through the world: Social Media: Your value is directly proportional to your number of likes or followers. Commercialism: You can only be happy if you buy this product we're selling right now. (See 1 John 2:16) News & Politics: Unborn children do not have a right to life. False Religions: Follow our rules to earn yourself a place in heaven. Progressivism in the church: The Bible is old-fashioned and talks too much about sin. Relativism: Everyone gets to choose what's right in their own eyes. This list is just scratching the surface. Add to this list or create your own. There are countless examples of bad ideas planted in our head from the world around us. And this isn't just high-sounding nonsense, it's actually spiritual warfare! James gave this warning: James 4:4 You adulterers! Don't you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. Winning the War The Bible teaches that the battle against the world is already won in Christ (Colossians 2:14-15). But how do we appropriate the victory for our lives? How do we tap into the victory when the world comes at us hard? We win the war with the world by exercising spiritual discernment in our everyday lives. Paul said it this way: Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pursuegod/support
Ever get an email from the prince of an African country who needed money? Not everything is true you read on the Internet. In this episode we conclude our mini-series on screens. How is it possible that we are the most “connected” generation yet the most “lonely” generation? We have some ideas. We're going to talk about social media, online scams, and the top 3 things people Google after midnight.
Have you ever engaged in spiritual warfare? If your answer is a hard “no,” you might need to think again. The truth is, spiritual warfare is something we all experience – and it happens more often than you think. Spiritual warfare involves both everyday life and otherworldly battles. Theologians have historically described it in terms of three arenas: the world, the flesh, the devil. We'll use this framework throughout this series, but for this first lesson we simply want to outline three principles that are true of all spiritual warfare. Footholds and Strongholds Spiritual warfare uses footholds to establish strongholds. According to the Oxford dictionary, a foothold is “a secure position from which further progress may be made.” Satan and his demons do everything they can to establish these footholds, and they're more patient than you think. They know that small victories can lead to major destruction. Paul gives an example: Ephesians 4:26-27 (NLT) And “don't sin by letting anger control you.” Don't let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil. The devil knows that a foothold of anger can turn into a stronghold of bitterness and resentment. Oxford defines a stronghold as “a place that has been fortified so as to protect it against attack.” Footholds are about gaining ground, and they're used when we're on the offensive. Strongholds are about protecting ground already taken - a defensive position. If you're not alert to the footholds that the enemy wants to establish, you'll be prone to allowing him to establish strongholds that are much harder to tear down. [Related Series: Breakthrough Disciplines] But what do these footholds look like? How can we stay on the lookout? A Battle in the Mind While the heavenly realm exists – a place with angels and demons and even Satan himself – it's a mistake to think that spiritual battles are exclusively fought there. A close reading of the Bible tells a different story: that spiritual warfare is waged in the thought realm more than anywhere else. Paul explained it like this to the church in Corinth: 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (NLT) We are human, but we don't wage war as humans do. We use God's mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. “Human reasoning,” “false arguments,” and “rebellious thoughts” – these are all weapons that are used against our minds. Spiritual warfare is a battle for our beliefs, memories, insecurities, fears, and fantasies. Satan uses bad ideas to establish a foothold in our lives, and he's been doing it since the beginning of time (Genesis 3:1-6). The War Is Already Won Now some of you are going to start looking for demons behind every bush. Don't do it. Others are going to struggle falling asleep tonight. Have no fear. Though spiritual warfare is more common than you once thought, there's good news for every Christian: the battle has already been won. Jesus dealt Satan the decisive blow at the cross: Colossians 2:14-15 (NLT) He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross. Satan has already lost, but he still has the ability to establish footholds in our lives. The question is not IF we have victory in Christ, it's WHETHER we will access the victory that has already been won. Our task is to come under the authority of Jesus, who is more powerful than Satan and all of his demons combined. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pursuegod/support

Hey everyone, this is Garrett Glaus. I wanted to give some context for this interview: As I'm currently going through an unexpected health crisis, I wanted to share what's been helping me get through this year and what this has been teaching me (please forgive how messy I am writing this as I'm going through this). Through 2021, I've been going through late stage Lyme Disease and a Progressive Autoimmune Disease and, while I'm currently going through treatment, it has been a rollercoaster to say the least- even two days after Nathan Dowdy recorded this I was back in the emergency room. But, there's been some concepts that have been sustaining through the hardest moments and I couldn't keep them to myself if they had to potential to be as helpful to anyone else. So, incase my story could give you any footholds for you in your own situation, my good friend Nathan Dowdy put a lot of care and heart into making this interview happen. Hoping to be in a manageable place soon and we would appreciate all the prayers you have. In the meantime, I hope this is helpful in anyway it can be. Thanks and love, Garrett Glaus

This episode: Some fungi only form fruiting bodies after forest fires; where do they hide the rest of the time? At least for some of them, the answer is: inside mosses! Thanks to Daniel Raudabaugh for his contribution! Download Episode (6.2 MB, 9.0 minutes) Show notes: Microbe of the episode: Nocardia brevicatena News item Takeaways Forest fires can do a lot of damage, but life grows back quickly. Certain kinds of plant seed actually only germinate after a fire, and a similar thing is true of certain kinds of fungi: they only form fruiting bodies (like mushrooms, for spreading spores) after a fire. For plants, the advantage may come from increased access to light with some or all of the canopy burned away, and fungi may benefit from less competition on the ground. But in between burn events, these fire-loving (pyrophilous) fungi seem to disappear. Where do they go? The study here sought an answer, suspecting an association with some mosses that reappeared soon after a forest fire in North Carolina in 2016. They looked for fungi lurking as endophytes inside moss and other samples, both by growing them on agar and by DNA sequencing, and they found a number of different known pyrophilous fungi. Some of these were in soil, or samples from outside the burned area, but the majority were inside mosses growing in the recently burned zone. But notice here that all of this happened as mankind slipped from seeking God and in the end, they end up seeking demons. Footholds of Satan can become strongholds. What do I mean by foothold? A foothold is giving the devil a place to work and room to operate. When does a foothold become a stronghold? A stronghold is a mindset of hopelessness that causes me to see something that is contrary to God’s Word as unchangeable. It may sound complex, but it is simple. It is the attitude that says with a certain sinful behavior, “This is simply who I am. I cannot change.” We see that in the degradation of society today. Satan is still at work trying to destroy God's plan for marriage between ONE MAN and ONE WOMAN. The homosexual revolution, transgenderism and all of that depravity is just the plan of Satan being forced into an "acceptance" by society. Is it any wonder the world is being turned on its head? Try and stand against the depravity being forced on society today and you will find yourself in the cross-hairs of demon possessed politicians, activists, media, etc. who consider you a threat! A threat to what? Their demonic lifestyle. This is the reason the FLOOD came. God had seen enough. When God said, "Mans days would be 120 years" in verse 3, He was not stipulating how long we should live. He was saying they would have 120 years to repent and turn back to Him. Remember Jonah preaching to Nineveh? The city repented and God relented. He was offering the same type of thing to the world in Noah's day, but they refused to listen. The result: JUDGEMENT. According the Bible, the same thing is happening right now (as spelled out in the end days scenario). The Cross helps us to understand Genesis 6:7. Sin MUST be paid for and God MUST judge sin. There is no "half measure" when God deals with sin. It cost Jesus, the Son of God, His life! Do you really think we will somehow have our sin "winked at" if we do not repent and ask Jesus to forgive us? "He who knew no sin but became sin" (and thus was judged for sin) would somehow make it possible for us to live the way "we want" and never have to answer for it? In one word: NO. In verse 8, notice Noah finds favor. It was not earned. It was given, but Noah had to FIND it. God was "giving Grace" to everyone. Only Noah FOUND IT. Are you looking for God's Grace? We already saw Satan entering the realm of animals and showing up indwelling a snake in the Garden. Now, Satan plans to move in to the bodies of males and then to marry beautiful women and to produce children. This would be a demon-dominated union, and a demon-dominated family. Notice the word usage in Genesis 6:2. "he sons of God “saw” the daughters to be “attractive” (or good) and they “took.” Does that sound familiar? This parallels what happened in the Garden. In Genesis 3:5. Eve “saw that the fruit was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and she took and ate. We can see that the demons and Satan are sticking to a playbook that has been proven to work. They simply run the same play from the fall! The lust this time is not fruit, but the bodies of beautiful women that the sons of God “saw” and took for themselves. The picture is one of unmitigated lust. The word “took” does not suggest forced marriage or rape. This is a word that means a regular marriage union. One commentator observes that the “silence on the part of the ‘daughters’ may well reflected a willing complicity." Notice that God’s response is toward man and not to the demons. God has a judgment for the demons, but man is accountable for allowing themselves to get this far. We will come back to the 120 years part here, but notice that God does not allow sin to go unchecked forever. But notice here that all of this happened as mankind slipped from seeking God and in the end, they end up seeking demons. Footholds of Satan can become strongholds. A foothold is simply giving Satan "space" to work in your life. Be sure to subscribe to this series so you can be notified when a new episode is published as we go "verse by verse" through the Bible! From the series, "Fighting the World, the Flesh, and the Devil" as part of Practicing the Way. The Devil doesn't overpower or coerce us with his lies, instead he utilizes the seductive allure of influence. The authors of the Scriptures call this "giving the Devil a foothold." As apprentices of Jesus, how should we navigate our life and relationships without opening ourselves to the pull of the enemy?
