Host Doug Stephan and Dr. Ken Kronhaus of Lake Cardiology (352-735-1400) cover a number of topics affecting our health. First up, Doug and Dr. Ken discuss the biggest news stories in the medical world, starting with a focus on handling the excessive summertime heat and how to combat heat exhaustion and heat stroke with prevention — like staying hydrated (which sounds easier than done), wearing a hat, minimize sun exposure during the hottest part of the day (usually around 9/10 AM - 3 PM), and being aware of symptoms of heat-related illness.Summertime heat also brings stronger UV levels, and Dr. Ken shares his thoughts on wearing sunscreen, why it's important to use in order to avoid sunburn — which is what can lead to skin cancer — and a dermatologist-recommended sunscreen is the best kind of sunscreen. Plus, a hot new item that is sun-protective clothing that blocks out harmful UV rays.Next up, a caveat to the health benefits of drinking a cup or two of coffee every day may help you live longer but only if there aren't any creams or sugar added — black coffee is the only way to get the health benefits of coffee.Moving on, new information suggests some risk factors for lower back pain as we get older can be modifiable with fighting obesity, not smoking, getting rid of mental stress, lifting weights properly, and increasing the length of time and intensity of which you walk.We know about the concussion danger of football, but did you know soccer is a sport that can lead to brain injuries as well. A new study looks at the risk of using the head instead of the feet (headers), and that MRI scans found evidence that heading the ball alters chemistry and nerve function in the brain and causes slightly elevated levels of protein that have been associated with brain injury.Plus, Doug and Dr. Ken addresses fighting against muscle loss. Unfortunately, when it comes to weight loss drugs, a good amount of the weight coming off is from muscle, not strictly fat. However, there is an experimental drug to help people taking semaglutide keep their muscle while losing weight.Lastly, Dr. Ken answers listener questions. First one has to do with poop. Does regularity matter, and if it's in the morning, what is happening in your body overnight that causes some to have a bowel movement the first thing in the morning. Dr. Ken shares that while people should pay attention to their habits, he also encourages all of us to not overthink it. Constipation is typically a bigger issue than the time of day someone is having a bowel movement. If you're wondering — once a day is a good daily rate to move your bowels, and make sure you're getting enough water and staying hydrated.Next question is about vitamin D deficiency, asking what symptoms for which to look, and the best ways to get vitamin D. Webstie: GoodDayHealthShow.comSocial Media: @GoodDayNetworks

Samanta Rux from OSF Healthcare joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to talk about skin safety in the summer sun and school physicals. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, common in sunlight and some artificial lights, poses significant health risks. Three types of UV rays—UVA, UVB, and UVC—each affect the body differently. UVA rays penetrate deeply, promoting premature skin aging and increasing cancer risk, while UVB rays are mainly responsible for sunburn and are strongly linked to most skin cancers. Although UVC rays are the most dangerous, our ozone layer shields us from them. Repeated exposure to UV radiation can cause not only skin cancer but also premature aging and eye issues such as cataracts. Experts recommend protective measures like sunscreen, sunglasses, and limiting sun exposure. For more information, visit OSF Healthcare at osfhealthcare.org. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of summer by planning for the next school year. Scheduling a well-child visit with your child's pediatrician can cover both routine check-ups and required school or sports physicals in one appointment. Health experts advise that appointment slots tend to book quickly during the summer months, so it's wise to secure a spot soon. Early planning helps ensure children meet all health requirements before classes resume. For those needing to make an appointment, visit osf.care/gynL50W171Q for more information and to access the scheduling portal. Taking steps now can help ease the back-to-school rush.

With summer fast approaching, it's time to talk sun safety! In Kansas, cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, increased significantly from 2008 to 2017. Protection from the sun's rays could prevent about 90% of all skin cancer cases. Since youth are especially at risk for overexposure to the sun with extended times outdoors, KU Cancer Center's outreach network, the Masonic Cancer Alliance, implemented Pool Cool, a program to educate young people on sun safety behaviors. On this episode of the podcast Ashley Adorante from Pool Cool is taking a break while visiting pools across the state to share her top tips for staying safe in the sun and preventing skin cancer! Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Series - 8We are setting the “Gold Standard” for skin health and advocating for sun safety in this must-listen episode. Get advice from 4-time melanoma survivor and Olympic Gold medalist Summer Sanders.Growing up in California, learning to swim from an early age and eventually training for competition and the Olympics, gave Summer plenty of opportunities to be outside in the sun. Over time, this led to her hearing the words “you have malignant melanoma”. From that moment, Summer realized the deficit that exists when it comes to education and promoting sun protection and skin cancer awareness. She decided it was time to use her experience to bring the spotlight to sun safety and save lives.Today, she shares her experience of her first diagnosis in 2014 to the present day and why she feels so strongly about sun protection and being an advocate.Summer has accomplished so many amazing things in her life, winning not only two gold medals in the 1992 Olympics for swimming, but also being a TV and sports personality, a mom to 2 incredible children and also the wife of an Olympic skier. I wanted to include her in this series because she has also faced melanoma four times and continues to thrive in her life. She shows her determination and resilience in this fight against a frightening diagnosis.Together, let's educate ourselves and others on skin cancer and take action to advocate for our health. About 90% of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with ultraviolet radiation exposure. Sometimes prevention is straight forward: wear sunblock, stay shaded. But still, there are 1 million skin cancer diagnoses in the U.S. every year. Ultraviolet dosimeters are one of several technologies that are showing a lot of promise when it comes to preventing skin cancer. The tools collect personalized data about UV exposure and are linked to an app that allows people to enter information about their sun-protective behaviors like wearing sunscreen.  Psychologist Frank Perna, program director at the National Cancer Institute (NCI)'s Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences, Behavioral Research Program, and Health Behaviors Research Branch, discusses how programs like the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program and the Classification of Laws Associated with School Students (CLASS) are helpful in tracking melanoma as well as capturing data about state policies related to sun safety and sunscreen use in schools.
