We thought we'd start sharing the first few minutes of our Patreon episodes here on the main feed to give everyone a taste of what you can expect if you join us at patreon.com/thefrankencast. Inspired by Philip J. Reed's book The Wolf Man, from DieDie Books, we had to check out this strange curiosity from the days of live television "playhouse"-style programs. This live adaptation of Frankenstein starring Lon Chaney Jr. near the end of his life has a bit of a reputation among genre fans. Join us as we discuss this short film, it's reputation, and hopefully adequately honor a man who suffered a lot and still managed to give us monster kids so many brilliant performances.
It's the year 2090. There are signs that a pandemic is coming - a pandemic which will kill millions of innocent people - again. Because it's happened before. But this time, just maybe, we know what - or who - is causing it...and a chance to stop it. That's the setup for "Syndrome Johnny," a lost episode from a nearly-forgotten science-fiction anthology radio drama from 1953 called "Tales of Tomorrow." The television version of "Tales of Tomorrow," which actually came before the radio edition, is considered one of the first serious scifi video series. The TV edition spawned the radio offshoot, which hoped to fill the void of the recently-cancelled and now-classic series "Dimension X," adapting stories from Galaxy Magazine. Failing to find a sponsor, it only lasted a few months. The sound quality of the few recordings that survive is mostly quite poor, and our recreation "Syndrome Johnny" doesn't survive at all.Our transcontinental cast performs in the classic audio drama tradition - live in one uninterrupted take - to recapture the spirit of this pioneering science fiction show for a national audience for the first time in 70 years. In our cast: Trevor Rines, Canada Tim Burns, Kansas Jack Ward, Canada Greg McAfee, California Rhiannon McAfee California Gary Layton, Texas and Larry Groebe, Texas

It's the year 4000, and the colonization of the planet Mars is a fact. The folks up there aren't much different to those on Earth - except maybe a little wiser. Today's tale is the story of Matt Morrow, editor of the successful telepaper The Morrow News, and of what happened after a strange little man walked into his office, wearing a shiny blue suede suit and a straw hat - the kind that went out of fashion on Earth hundreds of years ago. The strange man was little, he was incongruous, and he was frightened. What is the ideal bodyguard? The most ferocious looking, the most efficient killer or the most devoted? On earth you might find a combination of all three but he’d never be as effective in the long run as the curious creature, which came back from mars with Dr Clyde Curtis in the year 2512. We shall very soon sense the unique qualities of this pet, Schaughtowl by name, the inspiration for a story in Galaxy Magazine called Martians Never Die. 'Martians Never Die' is the next in our series of updated radio sci-fi pieces from the forties and fifties. Re-recorded with new actors, modern sound effects and atmospheric music.During these productions we try to stick to the original script as closely as possible; in-turn seeking to create modern, yet strangely old fashioned pieces of radio drama. What is the ideal bodyguard? The most ferocious looking? The most efficient killer? Or the most devoted? On Earth, you might find a combination of all three, but it’d never be as effective as the curious creature which came back from Mars with Dr. Clyde Curtis; the first human to ever step foot on the red planet.
The Texas Radio Theatre Company recreates this lost ABC radio Tales of Tomorrow episode called "Syndrome Johnny" by Charles Dye about the world ravaged by pandemic after pandemic. This radio play was recorded at the Arlington Museum of Art on May 30th 2009 in front of a studio audience and includes the voice talents of Larry Groebe, Gary Layton, Tiffany Lonsdale-Hands, Ken Raney, Kelly Scott and Ric Spiegel.Ken Raney provides the live sound effects and Richard Frohlich directs and engineers. The play runs approximately 30 minutes.
The 1950's saw both the twilight of the Golden Age of Radio and the birth of the science fiction radio series. Science fiction was not new to radio before 1950, but it was either targeted to juvenile audiences or were shows in a broader series, for example, ESCAPE's "The Time Machine". On March 15, 1950, the first show of Mutual's 2000 PLUS aired, becoming the very first true science fiction series in the US. DIMENSION X followed shortly on April 8, 1950 over NBC stations. TALES OF TOMORROW was the third dedicated science fiction series, over the stations of the American Broadcasting Corporation, following DIMENSION X by almost 2 years. The host of the show was Raymond Edward Johnson, of INNER SANCTUM fame. Mr. Johnson handled TALES OF TOMORROW openings in a similar fashion to INNER SANCTUM openings, but with a "science fiction" flavor, instead of a "macabre" sense. The shows of this series were quite good, borrowing ideas from stories in "Galaxy" magazine. Some of the story titles may seem familiar, like "The Stars Are The Styx", "The Girls From Earth" or "The Old Die Rich". These titles would appear later in CBS's X MINUS ONE. "Watch Bird" would later be done in South Africa, in a series entitled SF68. But radio was on the decline. TALES OF TOMORROW lasted only until April of that year, airing only 15 shows.
