It was serialized in Shogakukan's manga magazines Monthly Ikki (November 2000 to September 2014), Hibana [ja] (March 2015 to August 2017), and Monthly Shōnen Sunday (November 2017 to September 2018); its chapters were collected in 23 tankōbon volumes. Dorohedoro tells the story of the amnesiac reptilian-headed Caiman, working together with his friend Nikaido to recover his memories and survive in a strange and violent world. In North America, the series has been licensed for English-language release by Viz Media in 2009, which began distributing the manga digitally when it launched SigIKKI, the now defunct online English version of Ikki magazine. The 23 volumes were published from 2010 to 2019. A 12-episode anime television series adaptation produced by MAPPA was broadcast in Japan on Tokyo MX from January to March 2020. It was followed by a worldwide streaming release on Netflix in May 2020. A sequel streaming series has been announced. The series is set in a near post-apocalyptic future,[1] taking place across three realms: Hole, an ungoverned human favela megacity, heavily polluted from magic waste. Sorcerers' world, an ethereal, Gothic class society, controlled by crime boss En. Hell, the afterlife of all sorcerers, ruled by demons presided over by Chidaruma. Despite similar outward appearance, humans and sorcerers are two distinct species; Sorcerers were manufactured by Chidaruma in his realm, whereas humans occurred naturally in another. Sorcerers can also use magic through a circulatory system, which disperses a black smoke that gives them distinct powers. Stronger and rarer powers are highly prized, to the point of directly affecting social status; sorcerers will routinely commit to binding partnerships, resulting in violent competition for the right. Humans are forced to live in the slums of Hole, subject to unprovoked sorcerer violence and overwhelming magical pollution, whereas sorcerers live and travel freely between realms using conjured doorways. Nerd Escape Issue #28 is another MiniMangaManiaMonday!!!! Jublar brings the classic legendary manga title 20th Century Boys to the table, created by one of the most influential manga creators Naoki Urasawa. Cami started reading a new very dark sci fi comedy manga by the wonderful manga writer and artist Q Hayashida. 20th century boys has a Stephen King "It" feel to it with the main characters reflecting on their childhood in order to stop a powerful cult from destroying the world just as they prophesied as kids. And Dai Dark is about a boy named Zaha Sanko who's body has great and terrible powers, and it is rumored that whoever possesses his bones will be granted any wish they desire. SO Sanko pretty much steals everyones bones before they can get his, but in a cute gruesome kind of way. :) NERD ESCAPE! Break out the hippie crack cause this anime is TRIPPY. Seriously, I don't think it would be inappropriate to serve this anime with a helping of psilocybin mushrooms and a side of whip-its... Just make sure you've got a healthy state of mind cause this show is brutal and freaky enough to send you spiraling into a bad trip.Okay, maybe we'll save the psychedelics for the OST.Dorohedoro translates to "mud-sludge" in english and the music unit that composed the score, (K)Now_NAME, did a phenomenal job capturing the setting and emotional feel of "The Hole," the fictional city where most of the Dorohedoro plot takes place. "The Hole" acts as a kind of sewer or gutter where the litter, scum and magical waste of the sorcery world ends up creating chaos for the poor citizens that live there.  Between the industrial percussion, dark yet mystifying music beds, organized noise, and synthesized instrumentation that felt organic, the composers nailed the world building in this score. From Black Sabbath, Deftones and Slipknot to Billie Eilish and classic horror film scores, you can hear all the musical influences from piece to piece yet the music still feels incredibly unique.If you aren't already impressed, (K)Now_NAME also composed and arranged the OP and all 6 ending sequences as well, working hand in hand with the author of the manga, Q Hayashida, who wrote all the lyrics.Dorohedoro is without a doubt interesting and just downright weird. The story hooks you in, the characters are very well written and the music was super fun to analyze. I check out the first two volumes of Q Hayashida's latest manga series Dai Dark. It's a darkly funny romp through space with an eccentric band of characters. I enjoyed the first two volumes, and I'm curious to see if the story picks up and goes places. While I wait for the next volume, I'm going to check out Hayashida's previous series Dorohedoro!
