Sail 250 will celebrate America's sestercentennial with the largest-ever flotilla of tall ships from around the world. We'll get the details from Mark Romig, a senior advisor for New Orleans & Company and the lead for Sail 250.
Will Sofrin is a lifelong sailor and the author of the book "USCGC Eagle: The Legacy of America's Tall Ship." The book tells the story of a German naval training ship seized at the end of World War II and transformed into the U.S. Coast Guard's flagship, training generations of officers. Rather than a conventional history, it is told through firsthand accounts from those who sailed her, with each chapter capturing a different decade of the ship's life, from her dramatic 1946 delivery to America, to Cold War voyages behind the Iron Curtain, to surviving a near-loss in a hurricane. He is also the author of the book "All Hands on Deck," a memoir about sailing the tall ship Rose 5,000 miles from Rhode Island to California so she could become HMS Surprise in the feature film Master and Commander. We talk about sailing a J-70, his book all hands on deck, sailing a tall ship, what all the crew did, maneuvering a tall ship, sails on a tall ship, climbing the mast of a tall ship, tall-ship sailors of old, the book "Two Years Before the Mast," sailing the tall ship Rose from Rhode Island to California for the movie Master and Commander, chain of command on a tall ship, a force 12 storm, going aloft in the storm, freeclimbing rigs, crew dynamics on Rose, sailing upwind in a tall ship, the motion of the boat, ballast on a tall ship, the ship's carpenter, the daily routine, tools, varnishing exterior teak on a sailboat - tips and best practice, his new book "USCG Eagle: The Legacy of America's Tall Ship," Will's dream boat, and more. Barefoot cruising is returning, and it challenges almost everything modern cruising has become. In this episode of Yachting USA, host Rick Thomas sits down with Charles J. Kropke, CEO of The Windjammer Way, to explore the revival of tall-ship sailing and the return of barefoot cruising built on freedom, flexibility, and authentic connection at sea.Charles shares how Windjammer is rebuilding an iconic model rooted in small-ship exploration, captain-led itineraries, and deep respect for Caribbean culture and marine environments. Central to this story is the Mandalay, a 1923 sailing vessel with a remarkable history spanning luxury yachting and some of the most significant scientific research ever conducted at sea. This conversation goes beyond nostalgia and into the realities of scale, examining how mass cruising has reshaped the guest experience, why smaller sailing ships can reach places others cannot, and how crew culture, community, and purpose play a defining role in meaningful travel on the ocean.Listeners will gain insight into how Windjammer sits between luxury yacht charter and boutique cruising, why flexible itineraries matter, and how partnerships with research institutions and ocean science organizations are shaping the future of experiential sailing.Episode Topics Include What barefoot cruising really means in today's market Why tall ships offer access and authenticity big vessels cannot The Mandalay's legacy as both a luxury yacht and research vessel Captain-led itineraries versus fixed cruise schedules Crew culture, community, and the human side of life at sea Ocean science, research partnerships, and stewardship Where boutique cruising fits into the future of yachting Guest Charles J. I've always been a boat nerd, even as a kid, but I never really understood how our port and port authority works. In the news are always the major ones on the ocean coasts, but what about what happens here? Mark Schrupp of the Detroit Wayne County Port Authority breaks it all down - the history, the cargo, and its importance to our region. Plus, we get into some exciting stuff, like the upcoming Tall Ships event hitting Detroit for the first time many years! Mark gives us the details on these majestic sailing vessels coming to our waterfront and how you can see them up close. Good news: Real ID not required for Eagle tours in AstoriaThe Rose Festival Fleet ships passed Astoria yesterday and headed out to sea.One of them will return to us at the end of the week for tours in Astoria and that's the USCG Barque Eagle, America's Tall Ship. She will be at the Port of Astoria for tours beginning on Friday. And before I talk about that more, some really good news that I have been getting a lot of questions about.OK, good news. I just verified with the Port of Astoria that when the Eagle is at the Port this coming weekend, you can board her for a tour with government issued ID, like your driver's license. It does NOT have to be Real ID.Sincere apologies for any confusion about this issue. Sources I consulted earlier said we did need Real ID, but that turned out to be incorrect. But the good news is you can (according to the Port) just show up with your regular ID to board the ship. Whew. I've been stressing over this one. I want everyone to be able to get on board. She's a beautiful ship.Current info about tours (from the Eagle's Facebook page):Come see us at Pier 1 in Astoria where we'll be offering free public tours during the following dates and times:• Friday, June 13: TBD• Saturday, June 14: 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.• Sunday, June 15: 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.No tickets are required, and tours are free of charge. See you then!-----------------------------------------I'll share any updates about Friday tour hours when/if I learn more.
