How do we EMPOWER our SEN learners?  What if by accomodating for their unique needs, we were able to create a more student-centered environment for ALL learners?  Provided alternative methods of assessment. Allowed for hands-on projects. Built learning around common themes. Emphasized life skills as much as academic ones.  That's exactly what Co-Founders Ali Durban and Tamaryn Yatu have assembled at Gesher School; a through way school for children from ages 4-16 with mild to moderate needs. In this episode, we learn as student-centered practitioners: How to design and build more inclusive environments How to design learning experiences that engage and ignite our diverse learners The science behind neurodiverse learners and their needs How to assess learning that moves beyond paper/pencil tests How to create student-centered environments that create JOY and empowerment Connect with Ali on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ali-durban-6228233/ Connect with Tamaryn on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tamaryn-yartu-b5074751/ Learn more about Gesher: https://gesherschool.com/ Access their database of projects: https://gesherschool.com/school-life/projects/ Pre-Order "Where is the Teacher: The 12 Shifts for Student-Centered Environments." www.transformschool.com/whereistheteacher  Take the 12 shifts Scorecard: www.transformschool.com/12shiftsmastermind  Ali's Bio: Ali Durban is a parent and co-founder of Gesher, an all-through school designed especially for children who are differently able and who learn differently. Gesher School has been awarded Ofsted outstanding twice since it opened in 2017. Ali is also the founder of the Gesher Assessment Centre, which offers a bespoke multi-disciplinary assessment, diagnosis and report service for children and young people who may have ADHD, Autism or a range of varying learning differences. Ali's journey from exhausted SEND parent to co-founder of a thriving school community has transformed her into a ringleader for system-wide transformation. Ali currently chairs a SEND council for the Foundation of Education Development which is creating a 10-year plan and vision for UK education. Ali also sits on the Education Council for the Autism Centre of Excellence. Gesher School welcomes you to register for The Bridge, Gesher's professional journal for the learning and continuous development of schools and staff.  Tamaryn's Bio: Tamaryn is originally from Cape Town, South Africa, where she completed a Bachelor of Education Foundation Stage and worked within a specialist environment catering for children with a range of learning differences and a focus on early intervention. Tamaryn has always had a passion for teaching as inclusively and creatively as possible and therefore moved to London to explore different learning environments within this specialist field. As a SEND specialist, Tamaryn hs honed her skills over the years to support inclusive practice within several schools both locally and internationally. Through a transformative education approach, I have used Project Based Learning and dynamic learning designs to create innovative and purposeful curriculum programmes. Tamaryn has been a part of the Gesher journey since the very beginning, and became Headteacher at Gesher in April 2021.  She planned and oversaw the school's move to a new site alongside the Governors, staff and various external organisations, including 'planning learning spaces' as we evolved into the secondary phase. A big part of this work included the development of our learning spaces to deliver our authentic hands-on curriculum for our students while meeting a range of needs. This year my focus will be to continue to develop the school's provision alongside my new co-head while we work to make a systemic change in the education system through sharing best practices and advocating for our students.

This week, I have with me Tamaryn, musician, witch, perpetual student of the cosmos, and owner of the store 'Major Arcana' in Half Moon Bay, California. This episode is a powerful expression of creativity, passion, and shadow work. As Saturnine witches, we tackle these subjects as they must be truly seen, beyond masks of virtue and bound instead by an intentional acknowledgment of the All-Being as paradoxical in nature. Tamaryn and I discuss all of this and more through a Thelemic, psychoanalytical, and astrological lens. From Jacques Lacan to Kenneth Grant. From Nico symbolically consuming Marc Almond's soul through song, to the groundbreaking work of Amodali. Above all, with a particular reverence for all of the publicly unknown priestesses and magicians on their own personal esoteric path toward embodiment of these currents that collectively act as the rising tide of a new aeon. What does it mean to follow one's True Will? How might we consume our demons to integrate shadow and flesh? How might we best become channels of communion between Heaven and Earth. I adored this conversation with a dear friend, and I hope you all find it as inspiring and enlightening as I did. As a bonus for this episode, and to support the show, Tamaryn personally created a mix of songs meant to carry the emotions of her message, complete with a discussion on why each song was chosen. WRITER SEEKS ASSISTANT TO HELP WITH ARCHIVING/RESEARCH FOR A NEW NOVEL. Don't bother to apply if your name is Shakespearean or classical. PARIS AND SOUTH. PART-TIME. Leah, a young woman who has found herself 'ambitioned' out of London, is now aimlessly adrift in Paris. Tired of odd jobs in cafés and teaching English to unresponsive social media influencers, her heart skips a beat when she spots an advert for a writer seeking an assistant. Michael was once the bright young star of the London literary scene, now a washed-up author with writer's block. He doesn't place much hope in the advert, but after meeting Leah is filled with an inspiration he hasn't felt in years. When Michael offers Leah the opportunity to join him and his family in their rambling but glorious property in the south of France for the summer, she finally feels her luck is turning. But as she begins to transcribe the diaries from his debauched life in 1960s Soho, something begins to nag at Leah's sense of fulfilment; that there might be more to Michael than meets the eye.

In commemoration of the 43rd anniversary of youth day (16 June, 1976), this week we talk to reigning Miss SA Tamaryn Green about the 2018 Miss SA pageant, which celebrated its Diamond Jubilee (60th anniversary) this year, and the responsibilities and privileges associated with being Miss SA. We discuss some of the women’s empowerment work Tamaryn is involved with, through her sponsors, like Cell C’s Take A Girl Child to Work programme, which has evolved from one day to a more enduring platform that offers information and guidance to young women to transition into capable empowered adults, and her own forthcoming initiative where she plans to combine health and education into a campaign. We talk about some of the factors that have contributed to her success, from support structures, to having a dream, to hard work and being personable. We consider some of the qualities that women bring to leadership including empathy and compassion. We remark on the gains that women have achieved - a win for one of us is a win for all of us. BiH Favoritest Songs of the Year: 2015

2015 was personally a very busy year and I thus made the fewest BiH mixes in my 5+ year tenure as your humble music presenter. I hope to do better in 2016. But as a result there are a handful of songs on this mix that were among my favorites for the year but which never actually made it onto a BiH mix (granted, they are on some unreleased, unfinished mixes). I am not sure at this point if it makes sense to include them in future mixes or not. TBD.2015 was a pretty great year for music. Sadly I still have a boatload of unheard tracks in my iTunes for the year, but that's okay. I'll get to it eventually. I heard plenty of great new stuff this year. I also had the pleasure of seeing some of my favorite new artists at the Treasure Island Music Festival this year (The National, CHVRCHES, Panda Bear, Run the Jewels, many many more). I'll probably make the TIMF an annual thing. The lineup this year was pretty epic, and they have been in year's past as well. I suspect the future will be no different.I know this mix doesn't include as many unknown artists as last year's Favoritest Songs edition; I guess that has to do with me not hearing as much unknown music this year. I really should try to commit to hearing it all in 2016.We recently lost our dog for a few days, but we found her. That explains why I used the same cover for this edition as I did for 2014. I love this picture. We love our dog and it is great to have her back home, to say the least.BiH Favoritest Songs of the Year: 2015 feat. Here is a cool story. A long time ago I encouraged everyone to go and check out this amazing remix of Call Me Maybe by Saint Pepsi. That was maybe the first Saint Pepsi track I had heard (but maybe not; I don't remember).  But I became a fan, for sure. Then I heard this guy Skylar Spence a few weeks ago, and played the song included here (called Affairs) over and over and over and I was totally in love. Because I never read blogs anymore I don't really keep up with music news. But I had to check them out, and it turns out Skylar Spence is the new name for Saint Pepsi, only now the guy sings as well (and it's great).  Given how much new music I hear all the time it fascinates me that even though it's the same guy, it is very different music, and that I just loved the new stuff as soon as I heard it, that is cool. And he has incredible pop sensibilities. And to top it off, NM and I are going to see him play at the Treasure Island music festival this year (we got tickets before I knew the music, to boot). That festival reads like a laundry list of BiH favorites: The National, CHURCHES, Jose Gonzales, Run the Jewels, Panda Bear... plus a bunch of new favorites like Skylar Spence and Viet Cong. Cool story.Still can't get enough of the new Tame Impala and just had to include my favorite song here.  Tough to beat this BiH opening here as well; this Transviolet track is amazing. Kids these days, they can write some great tunes (but hey, so can the Chills still, so...old guys still got it too. And NM and I just saw Echo & The Bunnymen a few weeks ago and they sounded as fresh as ever, even while playing 3 Doors covers. I also recently saw another band included here: Doomsquad. They opened for (and played on stage with) Fucked Up, who just played in Santa Cruz to a small audience and they killed it. Doomsday is a tremendous live band (and are comprised of all siblings. That would not work in my family.)But speaking earlier of great pop sensibilities, the Tamaryn track on here also approaches the sublime. Come to think of it, this mix was hard to make because there is so much great material included on it. Once you raise the bar, you can't just lower it. It only goes in one direction. To raising the bar. Speaking of, props to my friend Nic Courdy for the rad cover image.BiH 50 feat. Tame Impala, Bec Sandridge, Joan Shelly, Doomsquad, Tamaryn, Transviolet, Beat Connection, Skylar Spence, Bob Moses, The Chills, Best Coast
