As we enter a season of greater darkness and less light (for those of us in the Northern hemisphere), it is imperative to spend more time within, connect to your heart, inner pilot light, and the all loving Divine Mind. This week's episode is with Lars Muhl, spiritual teacher and author of The God Formula and The Sacred Numbers of Initiation, and Naleea Landmann, healer and author of The Love That You Are. It's all about how to experience divine communion and disappear fear and misconceptions about yourself that are untrue. More about my guests: Lars Muhl is an author, musician, therapist and inspirational speaker who since childhood has been connected to spirituality. In his own words: “Very early I had some powerful out-of-body experiences and glimpses into etheric realms which showed me that there is more to life than most people are aware of.” He studied the Aramaic language, esoteric Christianity and the mystery traditions of the Essenes and the Therapeutae for many years, but it wasn't before he started to work with the seer and healer Calle de Montségur, he realized that studying and reading only make up half of what is needed in order to realize our full potential. Only through genuine spiritual practice and experiences will we be able to fully understand that we are already Enlightened Beings. He has worked together with Naleea Landmann since 2017. She started as a translator of his German workshops. Later she edited, translated and contributed to his books The God Formula, The Light within a Human Heart, and The Sacred Numbers of Initiation. They co-write texts about the work and she filmed and produced many of the recent videos. Today they are doing talks, concerts and workshops together under the umbrella of Sacred Seed. Naleea Landmann is a therapist, musician, author, actor and inspirational speaker. Since early childhood, Naleea had a strong yearning to connect with the Divine and understand the realities of this world and the universe. Her out-of-body experiences lead her to question “reality” already as a young child – her personal experiences as well as our path as humanity. Finding a way to express what she perceived and felt, she first started to use acting as a tool to communicate and reach people, as well as an opportunity to understand the ways of our personality structures. Her vision is to live within a world of heart-centered beings, who listen to their own guidance and share themselves and their gifts in joy, true connection and Divine communion. Her first book, The Love That You Are – Psalm 119 Meditations, is a guide and companion to enter into the I AM Presence through prayer. The paraphrased Psalm can be found as well in the book The Sacred Numbers of Initiation by Lars Muhl. The prayer recited in this episode: Psalm 119:89-96 "Heavenly Source of All Being, I am Light, born within the Light. 89 Your word and wisdom are eternal; their echo fills the spheres of all Heavens. 90 I AM the faith passed on by the Mighty Ones; the ancient glory of the Earth rejoices in all her splendor. 91 Now and forever, Your Light fills all existence, and all things radiate Your Presence. 92 I AM the delight in Your wisdom, it comforts and strengthens me at all times. 93 I AM the remembering of Your love; it is the sacred breath of my life. 94 Your Presence is my belonging and my safety; I AM the enfolding of Your guidance. 95 If I face wickedness or destruction, I open Your shield of peace. 96 I raise my senses into Your vibration; I AM the merging with Your boundless Light.” About Your Host, Julie Reisler Join Julie Reisler weekly, podcast host, intuitive coach, author, and multi-time TEDx speaker, each week to learn how to access your spiritual gifts and inner guidance to be your You-est You® and achieve greater inner peace, spiritual connection, happiness, and abundance. Hi Friends. Matt Whitney here. I thought for the podcast I would do a reading of a reflection I wrote for our SDI Listen publication, which comes out quarterly. It's about something Henri Nouwen wrote in his book The Inner Voice of Love. I hope you enjoy the reading, and the written reflection is below. SDI has thousands of spiritual directors, companions, guides, and teachers who are available to work with you, listen to you, and accompany you on your spiritual journey. Find one to work with today at sdicompanions.org. --- I recently took a short backpacking trip in the North Cascades of Washington State. I like to have an author accompany me while sipping my instant coffee in the morning or curling up in my sleeping bag at night. This trip, I brought with me Henri Nouwen's The Inner Voice of Love, described on the back cover as his “secret journal” – written during a period of intense doubt, low self-esteem, anguish, and despair. Nouwen writes with great clarity and purpose, and I was moved reading his intimate sharing. In one entry, he writes of our need to share our struggles, pain, and anguish with others, so that need may be affirmed and acknowledged. Indeed, Nouwen continues, our suffering can be of service to others, when shared judiciously, and with caution. Nouwen says, “You will always need people who do not need you but who can receive you and give you back to yourself.” I was struck – what a beautiful description of spiritual companionship, encapsulating the essence, calling, and profound gifts of spiritual companionship! I'm in my sixth year working for SDI. During this time, I've had countless conversations with folks about our work as spiritual directors and companions. Sometimes these discussions are easy, but more often context is necessary for those unfamiliar with our modalities. So, I describe our practices of deep listening, contemplation, and compassionate service, in service to helping others on their own unique spiritual journeys. These approaches help us all to recall and behold our deep, and innate, connection with God, The Divine, The Universe, or however we might each name The Ground of All Being. Let's contemplate this together – how are each of us received by someone “who does not need us,” and who “gives us back to ourselves?” What does it mean that someone needs nothing from us? Let's start with the fact that we have many relationships in life, with varying degrees of responsibilities and obligations. As a partner and a parent, I have a responsibility to be loving and caring to my spouse, and my son. If we are friends, it's important that we find fun things to do together, as well as help each other out in our struggles, or even with more mundane tasks such as moving or working on a house project. Professional colleagues pool their efforts in common causes and purposes. And so on. All of these relationships can blossom as we get to know one another, and become more intimate over time. Perhaps eventually to the point of finding safety and comfort in sharing our spirituality with each other. After all, mutuality and reciprocity are the most precious gifts of our relationships. We give as much as we get. One question I often hear in response to my own descriptions of a spiritual companion is: “why can't that person just be an intimate partner, or a good friend?” To which I respond, “On occasion, they can be!” But what I have found, and I imagine you may have as well, is that our sufferings and longings are too intimate, too delicate, and too easily misunderstood by even our partners and closest friends. Within us may be truths so hidden that we don't know how to properly speak of them. This can become problematic if we are tempted to overshare, as it may confuse or even become a burden to those whom we live and work with. As it turns out, our colleagues, friends, and partners actually need quite a bit from us – as does every good relationship. This includes the inevitable need to be selective, and even guarded, in sharing our most intimate spiritual selves. Conversely, though a partner or friend might mean well, they are likely not attuned to the deep listening that would be most helpful to us. They may want to correct us, solve our problems, and make us feel better. The intentions are good, but these responses can be awkward, even harmful, to understanding our unique journeys. You will always need people who do not need you but who can receive you and give you back to yourself. - Henri Nouwen Illustrated by Matt Whitney This is what Nouwen means by “need.” Our partners need us to be loving, contributing partners. Our colleagues need us to be productive and helpful. Our friends need us to be…friends. They also need us to be complete and caring people in their lives. On the other hand, a spiritual companion doesn't need us at all in these ways. They don't require our service or assistance. When I meet with mine, I don't need to dress nicely, or pretend that I'm in a good mood. I arrive just as I am, with all my “baggage.” This is a great gift and a huge relief! Nouwen adds that a spiritual companion “gives us back to ourselves.” As we all notice the tangles of our busy lives, and the anxieties and fears we carry, we eventually realize there are things deep within us that yearn and long in ways we may not be able to properly name. A spiritual companion can give us uninhibited safe space to untangle and declutter the surface of our lives, such that the depths within us can be excavated. Much like clearing weeds from a garden, these depths are given air to breathe and light to reveal. A spiritual companion can give us uninhibited safe space to untangle and declutter the surface of our lives, such that the depths within us can be excavated. Much like clearing weeds from a garden, these depths are given air to breathe and light to reveal. Many of the world's spiritual traditions speak of the True Self. This True Self is our Spiritual Essence, the Child of God, Transcendent Awareness, the Eternal Self, The Ground of Our Being. This depth is you – the real You that spiritual companionship gives back to us! There is much work we must all do to discover our True Nature: learning to integrate our pain, understanding our suffering, and alchemizing these into the living wisdom that weaves itself through all of us eternally. Though my descriptions of spiritual companionship change depending on the conversation, I always say: “Everyone should work with a spiritual companion.” This includes you! If spiritual companionship is not part of your routine of care, I encourage you to check out our Find a Spiritual Companion Directory. Spend some time researching potential Spiritual Directors, Companions, and Guides to work with, and connect with a few. They are the kindest folks I know and typically offer free introductory sessions if you ask. And may you find a person who needs nothing from you, but can receive you, and give you back to yourself. --- Support for SDI Encounters comes from THE CENTER FOR SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT, WHICH INVITES YOU TO AN ONLINE BIOSPIRITUAL FOCUSING BOOK STUDY. Dawn Lester and David Parker What really makes you ill and the nature of reality Imagine God or the Source of All Being, which will be outside of time and space. It can perceive but can't be perceived. Wants to explore itself, but can never entirely do that because it is limitless. That starts the creation of worlds where we appear to be solid and separate individuals, but we're all part of true nature. We must forget true nature to explore things that are meaningful. In this reality, we've forgotten our true nature of mortal and limitless. We have to forget what we truly are, so we can remember who we are, so we can have more control over our reality. We live our lives based on beliefs. They want to limit our power and nature. We are more than the physical body. Which means you can change your experiences, change the narrative. Don't have to live in fear-based system. Leads to creating new ways of living, without wars, more harmonious, based on our true nature of unconditional love. We are gods in our own way. Christian mystic Clement of Alexandria said to practice being God. We are the One manifested as the many. We appear to be separate, but we're not separate from anything. We each have our own reality, and we decide how we're going to interact. Don't put energy into anything hateful. The evil ones are playing a role, bringing us out of complacency. It's the Great Awakening. We've never had this opportunity before. If you don't believe in a doomsday, it won't happen. But rotten systems will crumble from the inside. Quote from an Indian maharishi about self-realization. Listener asks: What do I do with all the thoughts streaming through my mind? Use meditation/contemplation to still the mind; be in nature. Quieten down the mind. Look at why you're thinking those things. Every thought is a state of consciousness. Move to a state that you want. Past, present, and future exist simultaneously. Quantum physics agrees. We don't have to be afraid of death. We've created reality to experience things. Won't understand swimming until you get in the water and swim. Symptoms represent the body trying to get back into balance. Don't let the label doctors give you be part of your identity. Dying of the diagnosis. What can you do to help your body heal? 4 factors causing all illness: Toxification, poor nutrition, emf exposure, prolonged stress. No need to fear a germ or virus will attack you. We are not a biological accident. No scientific evidence to support Darwinism. Our true nature is soul. We have manifested into a reality. Do you really think and believe millions of souls have come to earth to live in tyranny? We're on the brink of an Eden.

How can we begin to understand what it means to Trust in God? To trust in the One of All Being? We can begin by recognizing the trait of trust that we already experience...every single day. We can cultivate our 'mental muscle' to help us gain an ability to have Trust. With this podcast, you will have the ability to experience the character trait of Trust, of Bitachon (Hebrew). How do we handle emptiness? How do we handle our lives when we walk into a tomb, into a place where emptiness resides? It is a question we can only begin to tackle on this episode of GoodTheology. The scripture used to help tackle this question comes from the Gospel according to John , chapter 20, verses 1-18 and is read from the Common English Bible (CEB). The poem used in this episode of GoodTheology comes from DoctorWho, Season 10, Episode 6: “Goodness is not goodness that seeks advantage. Good is good in the final hour, in the deepest pit without hope, without witness, without reward. Virtue is only virtue in extremis. This is what he believes, and this is the reason above all, I love him. My husband. My madman in a box. My Doctor.” Please remember to rate us 5-stars on your podcast listening service.
This week, I have with me Tamaryn, musician, witch, perpetual student of the cosmos, and owner of the store 'Major Arcana' in Half Moon Bay, California. This episode is a powerful expression of creativity, passion, and shadow work. As Saturnine witches, we tackle these subjects as they must be truly seen, beyond masks of virtue and bound instead by an intentional acknowledgment of the All-Being as paradoxical in nature. Tamaryn and I discuss all of this and more through a Thelemic, psychoanalytical, and astrological lens. From Jacques Lacan to Kenneth Grant. From Nico symbolically consuming Marc Almond's soul through song, to the groundbreaking work of Amodali. Above all, with a particular reverence for all of the publicly unknown priestesses and magicians on their own personal esoteric path toward embodiment of these currents that collectively act as the rising tide of a new aeon. What does it mean to follow one's True Will? How might we consume our demons to integrate shadow and flesh? How might we best become channels of communion between Heaven and Earth. I adored this conversation with a dear friend, and I hope you all find it as inspiring and enlightening as I did. As a bonus for this episode, and to support the show, Tamaryn personally created a mix of songs meant to carry the emotions of her message, complete with a discussion on why each song was chosen. can we can we begin to agree, that means not you and me, but You with You agree that you're here for your highest potentiality, for your deeper realisation, even if that rocks the boat of your human structure body-mind identity. You're here to live that fully and absolutely for You and for all beings to realise their own inherent freedom. The Room If you jumped into a cat you'd have a different perspective of this room, if you jumped into a friend you'd have a different perspective of this room, if you jumped into an alien you'd have a different perspective of this room. What is this room? Life without the furniture. That's What I Am, this 'I' that's listening to these words now. Life without the furniture. What does that mean? It means Pure-Awareness is not furniture or content, it's more than space, indescribable Awareness that is the Ground of All Being before the room starts to apparently fill with life, being and form. To return now to the room is You being true as the space from which even the Cosmos and the deeper Divine Realms come out of. And somehow however you've done this, your body describes the whole inner, outer journey and return. That's what your body describes. The moment nothing became everything is what your body describes and you'll return into the room without identifying with the furniture. It's called Love. You're not here to stay small, you're here to be the glory of Love Itself. S4 NY Retreat 21 To 22 1
Rev. Celeste's guest is Dr. Amit Goswami (https://www.amitgoswami.org), quantum physicist. He was featured in "What the Bleep Do We Know", "The Dalai Lama Renaissance", "Bigger Questions" and other films. Rev. Celeste studied with him as part of her training at Holmes Institute. He is a scholar in high demand. His primary point is that consciousness is the ground of all being. The current view of many scientists is that matter makes up everything and humans are material and mechanical. Consciousness is not about the brain. The brain is an object. Consciousness means we are experiencing ourselves as separate from material. Quantum physics shows us that objects are not objects until we observe them. They are waves of possibility. Dr. Goswami was dissatisfied with the way we did science. Science cannot be devoid of our experiences of love, beauty and justice. Life is more than what can be predicted or controlled. Science can help create technology, but we don't live in technology. Physics is the fundamental science of everything. Since consciousness is the ground of both science and religion, people from all religions say that consciousness is where we must begin. Quantum science must support this because there are unsolved paradoxes and measurement paradoxes that do not occur in the brain. Science has lost credibility because of this material dogma. We as observers have an impact on everything (the observer effect).Consciousness exists in both the head and heart. Due to the non-locality of consciousness, people can directly connect with each other without a signal because of feelings. Reincarnation is an important phenomenon in our development. It is important for older people to know they need not be afraid because a part of them will survive. They will be reborn. Death is not the end. Reincarnation happens because of a modification of the quantum mechanics of the person. It is not part of the brain memory. What we learn is not in the brain. Learning is non-local memory. We don't forget how to ride a bicycle because our capacity to learn is not part of the brain. The innate parts of us will survive. This reincarnation theory has been verified. Dr. Goswami and his colleague are holding an event this month to review death and reincarnation.Death can be very peaceful and joyful. In dying, one can pray and intend to be conscious at the moment of death and peacefully participate in the quantum non-locality. Dr. Goswami wrote many books. His more recent books include "Quantum Economics" and "Quantum Spirituality". His book: "Quantum Integrative Medicine" will change the healing profession forever. They have proven integrative medicine can be used to stay healthy. One can have an ageless body. We have to renew the software as we live. Cells die but you can be fully active until you die.Dr. Goswami has had four moments of mystic magic. One of them was in 1973 at a conference when he was a nuclear physicist. He was a speaker and he was not happy with his speech. He became jealous of the other speakers. Others got the attention and he did not. It did him good because at 1 am he asked himself why do I live this way? I can change. I can make my life congruent. He worked many hours. He desired to find happy physics that took him years to find.Meditation led him to samadhi. He felt oneness. His view of spirituality underwent a radical change. This led to other discoveries. You can have the experience of a quantum leap of insight, but you have to implement the insight into your life. This was the most fruitful insight he ever had. Listen to Rev. Celeste's poem: "The Ground of All Being".Support the show (http://paypal.me/rev107)

Glory be to you God, Source of All Being, Incarnate Word, and Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Scripture for this Episode: Mark, chapter 13, verses 28 to 32. Using the Common English Bible translation, Jesus said, “Learn this parable from the fig tree. After its branch becomes tender and it sprouts new leaves, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see these things happening, you know that he's near, at the door. I assure you that this generation won't pass away until all these things happen. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will certainly not pass away. “But nobody knows when that day or hour will come, not the angels in heaven and not the Son. Only the Father knows."

If you do, they will invite you in return and that will be your reward. 13 Instead, when you give a banquet, invite the poor, crippled, lame, and blind. 14 And you will be blessed because they can't repay you. Instead, you will be repaid when the just are resurrected.” 15 When one of the dinner guests heard Jesus' remarks, he said to Jesus, “Happy are those who will feast in God's kingdom.” 16 Jesus replied, “A certain man hosted a large dinner and invited many people. 17 When it was time for the dinner to begin, he sent his servant to tell the invited guests, ‘Come! The dinner is now ready.' 18 One by one, they all began to make excuses. The first one told him, ‘I bought a farm and must go and see it. Please excuse me.' 19 Another said, ‘I bought five teams of oxen, and I'm going to check on them. Please excuse me.' 20 Another said, ‘I just got married, so I can't come.' 21 When he returned, the servant reported these excuses to his master. The master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go quickly to the city's streets, the busy ones and the side streets, and bring the poor, crippled, blind, and lame.' 22 The servant said, ‘Master, your instructions have been followed and there is still room.' 23 The master said to the servant, ‘Go to the highways and back alleys and urge people to come in so that my house will be filled. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will taste my dinner.'”

Scripture for this Episode: Wisdom 3:1-9; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; John 5:24-27 (Common English Bible) [from Biblegateway.com] [Wis] 3 The souls of those who do what is right are in God's hand. They won't feel the pain of torment. 2 To those who don't know any better, it seems as if they have died. Their departure from this life was considered their misfortune. 3 Their leaving us seemed to be their destruction, but in reality they are at peace. 4 It may look to others as if they have been punished, but they have the hope of living forever.5 They were disciplined a little, but they will be rewarded with abundant good things, because God tested them and found that they deserve to be with him. 6 He tested them like gold in the furnace; he accepted them like an entirely burned offering. 7 Then, when the time comes for judgment, the godly will burst forth and run about like fiery sparks among dry straw. 8 The godly will judge nations and hold power over peoples, even as the Lord will rule over them forever.9 Those who trust in the Lord will know the truth. Those who are faithful will always be with him in love. Favor and mercy belong to the holy ones. God watches over God's chosen ones. [1 Thes] 13 Brothers and sisters, we want you to know about people who have died so that you won't mourn like others who don't have any hope.14 Since we believe that Jesus died and rose, so we also believe that God will bring with him those who have died in Jesus. 15 What we are saying is a message from the Lord: we who are alive and still around at the Lord's coming definitely won't go ahead of those who have died. 16 This is because the Lord himself will come down from heaven with the signal of a shout by the head angel and a blast on God's trumpet. First, those who are dead in Christ will rise. 17 Then, we who are living and still around will be taken up together with them in the clouds to meet with the Lord in the air. That way we will always be with the Lord. 18 So encourage each other with these words. [John] 24 “I assure you that whoever hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and won't come under judgment but has passed from death into life. 25 “I assure you that the time is coming—and is here!—when the dead will hear the voice of God's Son, and those who hear it will live.26 Just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. 27 He gives the Son authority to judge, because he is the Human One.

Transformation 101: The Two TruthsAired Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at 10:00 AM PST / 1:00 PM ESTThose familiar with Eastern philosophy will recognize the concept of the Two Truths: Absolute and Relative. These ideas can help us tremendously to understand our experience, and to make better decisions every day to grow spiritually and further Massive Transformation in our lives. They feature this week in our series Transformation 101.Here is the fundamental difference between the Absolute and the Relative: Absolute Truth refers to what is, Relative Truth to what appears to be. If you’re reading into this that one is real and one is not, you would be right. Exactly right.Eastern philosophy refers to Absolute Truth as the Nature of Mind or the Ground of All Being. In Western terms, we might call it God, Spirit, Source, the Universe, etc. It simply is. In Relative Truth, the world plays out with all its myriad experiences. In the world with all its variance, it can be a challenge to see another’s needs as our own. Yet this remains our task if we would grow and transform our experience. When our apparent differences seem so pronounced, how can we see past the differences for greater communication and understanding? The answer lies in Absolute Truth; we seek answers from spiritual practice. The only way to escape an unhappy situation is to seek solutions from outside the confines of that situation. We break out of a psychological prison by coming to realize that there are no walls.Join me this week for a spotlight on the importance of spirituality and its prominence in our lives. Experience a guided meditation and entertain the idea—call it the truth—that everything and everyone is spiritual. “I can live with doubt and uncertainty and not knowing. I think it is much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers that might be wrong. If we will only allow that, as we progress, we remain unsure, we will leave opportunities for alternatives. We will not become enthusiastic for the fact, the knowledge, the absolute truth of the day, but remain always uncertain … In order to make progress, one must leave the door to the unknown ajar.” —Richard P. Feyman “Let go of certainty. The opposite isn't uncertainty. It's openness, curiosity and a willingness to embrace paradox, rather than choose up sides. The ultimate challenge is to accept ourselves exactly as we are, but never stop trying to learn and grow.” —Tony Schwartz “We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!” —Douglas Adams Human beings abhor uncertainty. Ego and civilization are both built upon the illusion of certainty, cushioned by pleasure and comfort and designed to reduce uncertainty wherever possible. We try to rationalize uncertainty, placing ambiguity into discrete mental categories like “worst case scenarios”. Our society has become so addicted to predictability that, when predictably unpredictable events shake the foundations of our reality, we suddenly feel like we no longer have any place to stand. And when that happens, our ego’s first reaction is usually something like panic, fear, and self-preservation. Sound familiar? Have you had any trouble finding toilet paper recently? But there is another way to manage uncertainty — to surrender to it, to fully inhabit it, to embrace ambiguity and discover the incredible source of wisdom, curiosity, and anti-fragility that can only be found in the heart of the unknown. Because when the ground opens beneath our feet, there’s an opportunity to make contact with a far deeper and more enduring ground — the Ground of All Being, the unmovable mountain at the very center of you. Watch as Ryan and Corey invite us to deepen our practice in the face of uncertainty, finding strategies in all four quadrants to help us better acclimate ourselves to the massive pressures, social responsibilities, and societal realignments that are coming to the surface as we plunge into the opening act of the Transformation Age.

In this week’s podcast, SDI Executive Director Reverend Seifu interviews Reverend Felicia Parazaidar. Reverend Felicia is an ordained interfaith minister and a radical sacred activist, rooted in nonviolence philosophy. She founded a ministry called the Revolution of Love. Based on the Vision Statement – Revolution of Love is a “bold ministry of spiritual renewal and outreach dedicated to peace, transformation, and love.” Please note that the interview was recorded over web conferencing software, and the audio can be a little squeaky at times. Hopefully it’s not too distracting. One of the questions we’ve been receiving from people lately, is just what does InterFaith dialog look like. And we’ve found that the simplest way to describe this, is that those who engage in spiritual practices acknowledge that these are “forms” – holy words and names, rituals, sacred texts, and that these diverse and beautiful forms point us toward awareness and communion with a deeper Essence – which some call Love, God, Spirit, The Universe, Beyond the Beyond, or The Ground of All Being. However it is named, this Essence gives our lives meaning, and purpose, and dignity. How do you know and understand that Essence. How do you “come home to God?” as Reverend Felicia puts it? SDI deeply appreciates and respects the various and diverse “forms” that each of us brings to our Public Square of Spirituality. Really gettin' DOGEN'S WILD SOUND is a lot like gettin' THIS WILD SOUND ... (Please give a listen, and keep it playing while you read the rest of this post) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ds-sc_PJck&feature=player_embedded I've described Dogen as a JHANA JAZZ MAN-POET, riffing and free expressing-reexpressing-bending-straightening-unbinding-releasing the 'standard tunes' of the Sutras and Koans. The untrained ear can't make head or tail of it, complex rhythms, notes flying, wild tempo ... Above is what John Coltrane did-undid-diddled-redid, for example, with "MY FAVORITE THINGS", that really "squaresville" (though lovely in its own way) tune that you may recall being chirped by Julie Andrews in THE SOUND OF MUSIC (a great story)! For that reason, a familiarity with the original 'standards' of the American songbook helps a lot in getting where Coltrane was coming from and going to here. Likewise, a good grounding in traditional Buddhist, Mahayana and Zen philosophy and perspectives is vital to getting what Dogen is up to. But Dogen, Master of the WordJazz expression of the Wordless, then takes off bending and re-enlivening those "standard tunes" in ways felt in the skin, flesh, bones, and marrow. Dogen, for example, frequently re-wild-ed and bent up passages from the already wild and bent Lotus Sutra into something even more bent-iferous and wild-acios! Sometimes with Dogen, one can make out clearly the "original melody" he is working with ... a Sutra passage, a Poem, an Old Koan ... and sometimes barely so, for it is not always the "point" he is trying to make through reasoned words, but "the sound, man, the feeling of the music". Dogen and Coltrane make their own musical expression the same but different from the 'standards' that the playful playing is playing upon ... expressing Timeless Old Truths in ways never expressed before ... making Timeless New Truths in the process ... but one also should not forget that that "standard" tune is in there too, and keeps popping up as the theme The Shobogenzo, for example, is a rather thick and thorny maze to most readers. But once Dogen's basic ways of expression are understood, one can read the entirety with a bit more ease ... though never easy, mind you, as Dogen (like Coltrane) may often have sometimes let the notes and feeling lead him where they would, and may not have been always himself quite sure where the music was taking him -- or what he himself "meant"! Nonetheless, each certainly knew what he "meant" cause of the meaning of the feelings felt! Below is a passage I read in today's talk from Shobogenzo Bussho, where Dogen is jumping off from some basic Buddhist and Mahayana Teachings and standard Phrases to express the nature of Buddha nature. As part of the Soto Zen Text Project, Prof. Carl Bielefeldt offers some background on a few of these old phrases: “Sentient beings” (ujō 有情); “the multitude of beings” (gunjō 群生); “multitude of types” (gunrui 群類) [are each terms in Mahayana Buddhism] regularly used as synonyms for “living beings.” “Initial being” (shi’u 始有); “original being” (hon’u 本有); “marvelous being” (myō’u 妙有); “conditioned being” (en’u 縁有); “deluded being” (mō’u 妄有) [are a] series of terms expressing modes of existence discussed in Buddhist thought. The first, “initial being,” while not itself particularly common, is here contrasted with the familiar “original being,” a term used to express the fundamental reality from which the phenomenal world emerges. The expression “marvelous being” is probably best known in the phrase “true emptiness and marvelous being” (shinkū myō’u 眞空妙有), where it expresses the ultimate emptiness of phenomena. The term “conditioned being” suggests that which exists as a result of conditions — i.e., the conditioned dharmas of dependent origination (engi 縁起; pratīya-samutpāda); “deluded being” suggests that which exists as a result of deluded thoughts — i.e., the false objects of our misguided discrimination (funbetsu 分別; vikalpa). “Mind and object, nature and attribute” (shin kyō shō sō 心境性相): Two standard pairs in Buddhist thought: the mind, or thought (citta), and the objects of thought or of the senses (viṣaya, ālambana); and the nature, or essence (svabhāva), of a thing, and its attributes, or characteristics (lakṣana). “A hundred pieces” (hyaku zassui 百雜碎): A common [Zen] idiom for the multiplicity of phenomena. “One strip of iron” (ichijō tetsu 一條鐵): A common [Zen] idiom for the unity of phenomena, as in the saying, “one strip of iron for ten thousand li (wanli yitiao tie 萬里一條鐵). “Raising a fist” (nen kentō 拈拳頭): The raising of the fist is a common [Zen] gesture expressing what is beyond language and discrimination. And here is how Dogen plays jumping off from such a foundation ... expressing the profound unity and intimacy of we individual, sometimes deluded Being(s) and All Being and Buddha nature ... The Buddha Śākyamuni said [in the Mahā-parinirvāṇa-sūtra], “All living beings in their entirety have the buddha nature. The tathāgata always abides, without any change.” ... What is the essential point of the World Honored One’s [the Buddha's] saying, “All living beings in their entirety have the buddha nature”? ... One speaks of “living beings,” or “sentient beings,” or “the multitude of beings,” or “the multitude of types.” The phrase “entirety of being” refers to “living beings,” “the multitude of beings.” That is, the “entirety of being” is the buddha nature; “one entirety” of the “entirety of being” is called “living beings.” At this very moment, the interior and exterior of living beings is the “entirety of being” of the buddha nature. ... We should realize that the “being” that is here made the “entirety of being” by the buddha nature is not the being of being and non-being. The “entirety of being” is the word of the buddha, the tongue of the buddha, the eyes of the buddhas and ancestors, the nose of the patch-robed monk. Furthermore, the term “entirety of being” is not initial being, not original being, not marvelous being; how much less is it conditioned being or deluded being. ... ... The buddha nature is always the “entirety of being”; for the “entirety of being” is the buddha nature. The “entirety of being” is not “a hundred pieces”; the “entirety of being” is not “one strip of iron.” Since it is “raising a fist,” it is not large or small. Given that we are calling it “buddha nature,” it should not be of equal stature with the nobles; it should not be made of equal stature with the buddha nature. A Love Supreme! We have followed the star to the new born Christ, and behold the one in whom God is made manifest to the world. We stand by the river Jordan and watch the skies open as the dove descends upon our Lord. We drink the wine at the wedding at Cana and marvel at the one who produced it. We celebrate the revelation of the Lord. This is the day when we remember the revelation of God to humankind, but how can we celebrate the revelation the one who:Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne (PS 97:2).This is the God of whom Solomon says:It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honor of kings is to search out a matter (Pr 25:2).While I do not believe that anyone can every describe or define God in any great detail, I believe that God can be found by those who seek him out. All religion is an attempt for us to put these experiences in words. God is hidden from us by the minutia of our lives. Anyone can find God by relaxing, and coming to the present moment fully aware. This is the glory of mindfulness.Creation Spirituality talks about the four paths to encountering God. As Matthew Fox answers the question, "Where can God be found?" In the Via Positiva. In awe, wonder, and mystery of nature and all beings, each of whom is a ‘word of God,' a ‘mirror of God that glistens and glitters,' as Hildegard of Bingen put it. This is Path One (Creation Spirituality 18)This is the path most people find to God. Sitting in the awe of nature, we feel our interconnectedness with all things. This interbeing is the purest connection we have with the Divine. We can find God in music, art, or anything that instills within us a deep sense of Awe.Where else can God be found?“In the Via Negativa. In darkness and nothingness, in the silence and emptying, in the letting go and letting be, and in the pain and suffering that constitute an equally real part of our spiritual journey. This is Path Two (Creation Spirituality 18).”This is the path of the Buddha- the path of silence meditation. Most of us want to reject this aspect of life, but it is an equal part of existence, and the most universal. The Buddha himself reminds us of the only things we can ever know for sure, that we exist and that we are interconnected with all things. There is not an atom in our body that did not come from another creature, plant, or long lost star. It is in this lack of separate self that we find the Ground of All Being.Where else can God be found?“In the Via Creativa. In our generativity we co-create with God; in our imaginative output, we trust our images enough to birth them and ride them into existence. This is Path Three (Creation Spirituality 18).”This is the path of Rumi- the path of art and co-creation. The Via Creativa is the very beating heart of the sacrament of Art as Meditation. In trusting our own creativity, we come closer to God. We learn how to be bearers of Christ into the world like those who came before us."My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you (Gal 4:19)," as the apostle said, we find God through trusting our generatively.Where else can God be found?“In the Via Transformativa. In the relief of suffering, in the combating of injustice, in the struggle for homeostasis, for balance in society and history, and in the celebration that happens when persons struggling for justice and trying to live in mutuality come together to praise and give thanks for the gift of being and being together. This is Path Four (Creation Spirituality 18).”This is the path of Gandhi and Dr King, the path of satyagraha. In community and common cause, we find God. As David prayed, “Yours, O LORD is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is yours; yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all (1Chr 29:11).” Wherever we see greatness, we see God. Wherever we see glory, power, victory, or majesty, we see God. When ever we see love, charity, grace, mercy or any of the Divine attributes, we see God.These are the paths to God we have learned, the paths that we walk every day. They are as natural as breathing. There is nothing more simple than our experiences of God and learning to trust them. Get full access to Creation's Paths at www.creationspaths.com/subscribe
